Moving Target

Moving Target – Daryl Janmaat

Watford’s busy summer of transfer activity continued on Wednesday with the signing of Newcastle defender Daryl Janmaat for a reported £7.5 million.

The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Hornets, and speaking to the club’s official website about the move, expressed his delight at being able to ply his trade in England’s top-flight once again:

“I’m really happy to be here, it’s a new adventure for me. I was really pleased that Watford showed interest in me because I wanted to play in the Premier League… They had a good season and I hope we can do the same again this year.”

The History

The defender started out at Feyenoord, joining the club’s youth set-up at the age of six. He left the Dutch giants in 2007, though, linking up with second tier club ADO Den Haag.

It was there where Janmaat made his professional debut, and he would rack up 27 league appearances during the 2007/08 campaign, scoring twice and adding three assists, before joining Eredivisie side Heerenveen in the summer of 2008.

Janmaat spent four seasons with Heerenveen, where he established himself as a regular starter, totalling 100 appearances for the club, which yielded eight goals and six assists.

In the summer of 2012, Janmaat moved back to Feyenoord as a free agent after his contract expired. Over the next two seasons he would cement his standing of one of the leading right-backs in the country, playing 74 matches in all competitions, registering an impressive five goals and 11 assists.

The full-back then moved to Newcastle ahead of the 2014/15 campaign for a reported fee of £5 million, and enjoyed a strong first season on Tyneside, chalking up a goal and six assists across 37 league matches.

His performances, as did those of many Newcastle players, dipped last season, though, leading to the club’s relegation to the Championship. He still offered a decent attacking threat, though, managing two goals and four assists in 32 league outings.

Capped 16 times at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, Janmaat was handed a senior debut in a 2-0 win over Turkey in September 2012. He featured heavily as Holland finished third in the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 27 caps for his country, managing six assists, although he as yet to score at international level.

The Prospects

Considering the outlay on the former Magpie, it seems likely that Janmaat will take over from Nordin Amrabat as the right wing-back in Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri’s favoured 3-5-2 formation.

Fellow summer signing Brice Dja Djedje can also play in this position, as can Allan Nyom, Juan Zuniga, Ikechi Anya and Juan Carlos Paredes, so Mazzarri certainly has a number of options at his disposal.

Janmaat’s pedigree as a Fantasy asset certainly can’t be doubted. Since he made his Premier League debut in August 2014, no defender has assisted more goals (10) than the Dutchman.

Given Janmaat spent most of his Newcastle career as a right-back, and not a more attack-minded wing-back, the potential for the 27-year-old looks encouraging. It’s likely to see him priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), more than fellow first choice defenders Jose Holebas, Craig Cathcart, Sebastian Prodl and Miguel Britos (all 4.5).

With Holebas operating at left wing-back for the Hornets, it’s worth noting the Greek international has registered three shots and two key passes in the opening pair of matches, so should the former Roma defender remain nailed on, he may provide the better value.

Janmaat’s main strength is his crossing – he has finished among the top eight defenders for successful crosses in both of his Premier League seasons. He created 54 chances over that period, more than Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand (48), for example, who is priced at 5.5 in FPL.

Bearing in mind he managed to post those impressive numbers in a struggling Newcastle side, there’s no doubt that Janmaat looks an interesting Fantasy prospect.

What perhaps counts against him is the fact that Watford have looked less than impressive as a defensive unit in the early stages of Mazzarri’s reign at Vicarage Road, conceding an attempt every 5.2 minutes, the third worst record of any side thus far.

While tough matches against Southampton and Chelsea mean those statistics may be slightly skewed, as of yet the Hornets haven’t illustrated the defensive solidity which saw them rack up a very reasonable 11 clean sheets under Quique Sanchez Flores last term.

With further tricky fixtures to come in the short-term (ARS, whm, MUN), it’s unlikely we’ll see much of a defensive improvement until the schedule eases from Gameweek 6 onwards.

Janmaat’s time at Newcastle also saw him register 11 yellow cards and two red cards, which is a concern. Nonetheless, when Watford do have favourable runs in their schedule, his ability to pick up returns at either end of the pitch will likely bring him onto our radars, and make him one to watch.

On WC this week thinking of keeping Mahrez this week and then shipping him during IT break for either Ozil/Payet. Right way to go?
Ozil & Payet both need some mins. (Have 2 FTs saved)

    Please help appreciate your thoughts.

Many years ago, someone called Wayne posted on here that they'd discovered an amazing bug where he could make as many free transfers as he wanted.

We pointed out that he'd probably activated his wildcard.

No, he said, he definitely hadn't.

Yes, we said, you definitely have activated your only precious wildcard.

No, he said, and I can prove it. This is the text which pops up when I make a transfer!

The text says that your wildcard is active, we pointed out.

            No it doesn't.

            Yes it does.

            .......

            ........repeat for a while.......

            ..........

            Oh yeah, it does.

RIP Wayne, he was never seen again.

        Mids: Ozil, Payet

I'm not personally but advice would be to make as much money as you can, even on players that you don't want - get them in for the double rise but have your 'ideal team' in mind so you can aim towards that.

...also don't take out players you've made money on already unless you 100% don't want them back in.

I was planning from day 1 to play WC over this international break. Double United defence, Target, Amat, Firmino, Tadić and Redmond double up for this gw and Gray will be those who i need to transfer out. Will probably keep one of United defenders but have no idea who and maybe Redmond/Tadić
Arsenal, Everton and West Ham have really nice fixtures after break, so will be looking to include some of their players for sure.

If you had a mare picking your original squad it's a good opportunity to get that right.

If not (most on here) I think it's a few weeks too early to know who to pick. You want the line ups to settle down post the the end of the transfer window

it would need a true disaster this weekend for me to wildcard

my overall rank of 150k is better than I've started in about four years and most of those around me seem to the same key assets

I think I'll wait until clearer pictures emerge at the likes of Arsenal and Spurs

also - Mkhi at united is absolute class and will be fantasy gold as soon as he's embedded into that team. I do wonder, perversely, if Jose is playing Mata so he won't leave in the window and then will let him warm the bench most of the season...

Not so much the players but the re-allocation of funds to create a 2nd premium (9.5) position in midfield. So a major paring down in def/gk and 3rd striker is needed over the break.

My initial plan was to WC after GW3 but I'm not so sure now. Not had a great start but can only realistically see me wanting to make 2 or 3 changes to this team (in midfield). It's when it needs 4, 5 or 6 changes that the WC needs applying.

        Schmeichel / Jaku
        Stones Valencia Terry Amat Love
        Hazard Tadic Redmond Townsend Routledge
        Aguero Ibra Benteke

Have double Saints and double Palace attack which is overkill but nothing a -4 cannot solve.

I have Tadic, Kone and Friend, but I also have 2FTs to avoid any price drops. No WC for me.

No need for me to wildcard over the break. I will have 2 FT and I could take one more hit if it is really necesary. I'm so glad I went for Zlatan from GW1, otherwise I would be in big problems by now without him in my team. Could sell Townsend and one player from my defence just to shake things up a little bit.

I believe there is another international break in gw 6 or something? The fixtures take a turn for some teams at that point, think that looks like an ideal time to play it

wildcarded last year GW3 as had 50 odd points and ranked around 2.6m. Was loaded with non-performing high priced mids.

this year ranked around 750k and with so much tied up in Kun and Ibra don´t see much scope for change.

Waiting to see how teams settle before looking for value in defence and midfielders.

Thinking for now it˙s best to build value before WCarding.
Got 2 Fts to use for now anyway.

It depends. If Payet or Özil gets a good gameweek, I need to use my wildcard to get them into my team, especially taking their popularity and upcoming fixtures into account. It does not seem unlikely that both of them will be above 10.0 within a few gameweeks, at which point they will be hard to acquire. Williams is another player I might want to have in my team after this gameweek. At the same I need to get Hazard on board, and Koné needs to go.

Would you wildcard this team, Jonty?

        Forster, Foster
        Azpilicueta, Shaw, Stones, Friend, Koné
        Martial, Oscar, Redmond, Ramirez, Capoue
        Agüero, Ibrahimovic, Gray

        ... for instance into this:

        HEATON, Foster
        WILLIAMS, Shaw, Stones, MCAULEY, AMAT
        HAZARD, ÖZIL, Redmond, Ramirez, Capoue
        Agüero, Ibrahimovic, NEGREDO

      Same question - less choice

      A) Williams

      B) Stones

Lots of love for Stones but with Williams' better fixtures and 90mins on Tuesday surly he'll start.

So after more tinkering it comes down to this on WC.

        1) Stuani - Snodgrass (another 5.5) - 4.0 def (already have Amat)
        2) Stuani - Capoue - Stones/Willams (another 5.4 or less)
        3) Diamonde - Ramirez (another 5.5) - 4.4 def or less
        4) Diamonde - Capoue - Stones/Willams (another 5.4 or less)

If I get stuani I want a decent 5th mid or a decent defender in case he misses a game. I prefer Stuani over Diamonde purely for fixtures but once Hulls pick up I can drop him for Diamonde.

        Thinking 2 for now.

Is Holding really Worth it over a nailed on 4.5 defender without the threat of dropping like a stone in price - for a team that maybe will get 2-3 less clean sheets than Arsenal over the season?

Is Mirallas the most likely to make way for Bolasie?

Based on the sub last week seems like Deulofeu atm (encouraging!). Would be a shame to see him dropped again great differential (3.2%) 1 Goal 1 Assist for 6.5 isnt bad at all so far.

What do you all think of Michail Antonio ?
He had a decent last season and looks like a cheap way into a WH team that has great fixtures, especially since lanzini is injured.

Last year when WH had injury crises they went on a run of 0-0, 1-0, 0-1 scores IIRC.

So i don't see him getting mega hauls

Got him in for Carrol, big risk but it can also be a big reward if he scores and he does have the best fixture to do so.

Had to get rid of Carrol and my thinking was that any of the other 7.4 or lower forwards are as likely to blank as Tekkers so why not take a punt.
