Scout Notes – Europa League

A happy night at Old Trafford and desperation for Southampton mark an interesting set of Europa League ties. Here’s the notes from Thursday’s events…

Inter Milan 1 Southampton 0

Southampton came, saw and were conquered – for reasons that will have eluded them all the way back home from Italy.

The Saints dominated much of the match at the San Siro, enjoying 55% possession and having 13 shots to Inter’s eight, four of which were on target. Unfortunately, they then succumbed to the single shot on target their listless hosts managed all evening.

After insult came injury, Shane Long (6.1) going off with a hamstring issue that manager Claude Puel later confirmed will keep him out of Sunday’s trip to Man City.

“It was an injury for Long with his hamstring. It seems it will not be possible for him to play on Sunday.”

Puel had to bring on Charlie Austin (6.5), having said he wanted to rest his star striker. At least the 7.9%-owned Fantasy Premier League asset survived unscathed; his fellow goalscorer against Burnley, Nathan Redmond (5.9), didn’t even travel after picking up a knock at the weekend.

Puel does have other options up front. Jay Rodriguez (6.3) was one of six changes made to Sunday’s starting XI and record signing Sofiane Boufal (6.8) made his Saints debut as a second-half substitute.

Sam McQueen (4.5) continued for Matt Targett (4.4) at left back and impressed on his first start, but his FPL status as a midfielder hugely reduces his attractiveness. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (4.4), in for Jordy Clasie (4.7), also caught the eye.

The buzzword among both manager and players post-match was ‘frustrating’, although Puel managed to put a positive spin on things.

“I enjoyed the work of my players, because they played a fantastic first half, with quality and control of the game and many chances, without getting the goal. It is hard to accept the result of this game, with all the good things we did on the pitch. But it’s football and it’s important to learn to be clinical.”

The one concern for Puel is that despite making plenty of changes overall, his key attacking figures either played substantial parts in Thursday night’s proceedings or were injured – hardly ideal preparation for a trip to face the league leaders.

Southammpton XI: Forster, Martina, Yoshida, van Dijk, McQueen, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Tadic (Boufal 73), Rodriguez (Davis 78), Long (Austin 48).
Subs not used: McCarthy, Clasie, Fonte, Stephens.

Manchester United 4 Fenerbahce 1

Paul Pogba (8.3) shone, United hit four and returning hero Robin Van Persie scored a late consolation goal – all was well at Old Trafford.

The match was settled in two short bursts of action. First-half fouls on Juan Mata (7.4) and Anthony Martial (9.3) led to two penalties in as many minutes, with Pogba and Martial slotting home the resultant spot kicks. Pogba scored again, from a Jesse Lingard (5.7) assist, right on half-time and then Lingard made it four when the returning Wayne Rooney (8.7) set him up three minutes after the interval.

Jose Mourinho enjoyed the luxury of the 3-0 lead at the break by giving Chris Smalling (5.9) a long rest, with Marcos Rojo (5.2) replacing him, and he made further key substitutions – Memphis Depay (7.2) for Lingard and Fosu-Mensah (4.3) for Pogba – as the match wound down.

One key sub-plot developed on the night – who is United’s designated penalty taker?

Pogba explained his take on it post-match.

“It’s Wazza or myself [to take the penalties] but I told him I wanted to take it and he let me take it. So I’m very happy to score that penalty and from a player like him, the captain Wayne Rooney, to let me take the penalty is a big respect.”

Rooney’s place is not exactly nailed-down at the moment, so two goals and the chance of penalties is good news for Pogba’s 9.4% ownership base.

Mourinho made seven changes to the team that shut down Liverpool, with only David DeGea (5.5), Eric Bailly (5.5), Smalling and Pogba retained.

Luke Shaw (5.5) returned, but United’s most popular defender among FPL defenders, with 14.7% ownership, was solid rather than spectacular and it would be a surprise if Daley Blind (5.7) is not back in at left back for the weekend trip to Chelsea.

The United boss did, however, reveal that Smalling was withdrawn at half-time with a “minor injury” and that could possibly pave the way for Blind to slot into central defence, with Shaw retaining his role on the left.

However, if Smalling is fit, it will be a major surprise if the same team and tactics on show at Anfield aren’t wheeled out again.

Manchester United XI: De Gea; Darmian, Bailly, Smalling (Rojo 45), Shaw; Carrick, Mata, Pogba (Fosu-Mensah 75), Lingard (Depay 66), Rooney, Martial.
Subs not used: Romero, Fellaini, Ibrahimovic, Rashford.

A lot of managers go to a team and find a scapegoat to blame the team's issues on. Pep did it in Barca, Bayern and now City.

    Final repost
    Hi lads, long time.
The season has been a decent one for me with things looking up currently.
However, I have noticed something very different about this season. This is the first time I have actually tried up on doubling up on mids and it has worked. Fimino and Coutinho for gw6-7, Walcott and Sanchez for gw 8. Is this unique to this season or have I been missing out on this in the past?
Also, I do think this is one of the most open fpl season with most of the big price names performing well and you gotta think about the opportunity cost of leaving one out. There haven't yet been the Vardys, Mahrezs or Allis up until now..

I don't this season has been particularly different from previous for doubling up kingozil though fewer clean sheets means there is more points up for grabs .. few out of position players / false 9 type formations helps attacking returns too ..

It's more a matter of formation here, Firmino is stationed as a striker as is Sanchez so doubling up makes sense if the team are attacking well. In the same sense having Ali and Kane last year at points was a no brainer or if you wanted to have Costa and Hazard this season it's basically the same thing 🙂

    Hi folks

    Heaton Pickford
    Valencia Williams Evans Friend Amat
    Sanchez Firmino Son Antonio Capoue
    Aguero Costa Rashford

    1 FT, 0.2 itb

I've decided I can't go without Walcott any longer, so Antonio has to make way. I have to raise 0.7 to fund it though. I can't see any way apart from selling Valencia to Pieters. Should I go through with these moves for a hit?

    Thanks.

Driving me nuts not having him too. I think that's your best option to raise the funds, but it's probably not worth the hit.

I missed my opportunity to do Sterling + Antonio > Walcott + Alli. Now resigned myself to having to watch Antonio play right back for another week.

    3. C0YS
      • 8 Years

Generally, I think bringing in Walcott is worth the hit. Too bad Friend to Browning would only give you 0.6...letting Valencia go isn't ideal. Would letting Capoue go for a non-playing 4.3 mid give you enough? His days seem to be over, and I can't foresee a situation where you'd play Capoue ahead of them.

If not, I'd advise you make 3 changes over this current GW and next GW - get in Walcott for a hit while downgrading Friend & Capoue next week. The week after that you can upgrade one of Valencia/Williams/Evans...probably Evans to a 5.0/5.1.

      Good luck.

I wouldn't do it for a hit, i'd bring in Arnie or siggy for Antonio, both have plum fixtures, doubling up on Arsenal is not essential

Just think Sanchez will do better. Higher points potential for Alexis playing as a striker and Theo has been known to be quite wasteful whereas Sanchez is a more clinical finisher. I think they'll both do well though.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Fantasy Football's forgotten men.

Which forgotten men could be good assets to bring in as we head into winter.

Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba offered a reminder of their potential last night.

I've another name to throw into the mix too - Andre Ayew....who is now priced at a very friendly 7.1.

Which forgotten players do you think may shine as the winter nights draw in?

Word of caution with Ayew though - fixtures turn nasty in a while.

With mannone and but land both seemingly returning is the dream budget keeper combo of grant and pickford nearing the end? Or does it still have legs?

Worrying signs for myself and fellow Pickford - Grant/Jaku owners.

Moyes mentioned mannone this morning saying he is still out but is doing handling work. I initially though Pickford would keep his place but unless they start getting a few clean sheets I don't think he will.

Then, Hughes said Butland has been back out on the pitch this week and they expect him to progress quickly. I brought in Grant when I had 2Ft and nothing pressing hoping to get 4 games out of him (inc last week) may not get the 4th one now?

Exactly the same dilemma (see above). I'm on a wildcard at the moment and grant and pickford allow me so much strength elsewhere. Frustrating.

        Il be honest with you.

If I was WC'ing now I would be getting a permanent GK and a cheapie.

        Not two cheapies.

Don't go near Grant on WC. Pickford as back-up is fine. I'd be buying Cech, Heaton or Karius.

I guess he's already earned his transfer anyway, getting 4 pts more than Pickford last week.

Yeah. Tbh when i went with Pickford/Jaku on WC I thought that even if it would take a -4 to fix it down the line, the upgrades I could make elsewhere would've paid for it. And they have to be fair.

Aguero rested 1 game after a long international break, benched against Barcelona for tactical reasons & now the media is reporting Pep is going to sell Aguero. Must be a slow news week.

Just read an article about it, no facts apart from that he's just missed 2 games and Pep likes to sell strikers. Selling Eto'o in a swap for Ibra is not the messing about with strikers, it's trying to improve your squad.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

          Sold Eto'o after one season (he had scored 37 in 53);
          Sold Zlatan after 1 season (21 in 45);
          Played Villa wide and reduced his goals output;
          Sold Mandzukic after 1 season;
Played Lewandowski wide for much of his first season and reduced his goals output.

I'd call that messing about with strikers myself. 😕

Pep doesn't like out-and-out strikers. He doesn't like out-and-out defenders either. He doesn't even like specialist GKs. He only likes midfielders really.

    Captain choice !!!

    A. Lukaku
    B. Firmino
    C. Walcott
    D. Kun
    E. Costa

    What would you do ??

I have the same issue or rather worse as I have Sanchez over walcott.
So far I have nailed it down to Sanchez or Lukaku, but Ars seem to be more attacking

Still in two minds to hold Antonio or swap for Coutinho or Sterling...? If I hold I can do three trades then for -4 next week which appeals.

Depends on what you plan on doing with your three trades next week. If it involves getting Cout or Sterling then will it make a difference doing the trade this GW?

Still got Ibra so long term prob downgrade him to Wilson then get Sterling in for Capoue. Think I'll give Ibra the Burnley match though.

    C-Antonio

Think as you have Allen as a 4th mid you should be able to get a decent 3rd mid so I'd be investing some more money into the midfield so it's not too weak.

Well my front three is Aguero, Lukaku and Costa so funds are short for midfield as I have sanchez as well

    Who's captaining Walcott over Sanchez?

I have both and am leaning toward Walcott.

Their last 4 games tell the story.

But of course, as soon as I captain Walcott, Sanchez will get a hattrick.

    Grant (Jaku)
    Walker Blind Koscielny
    Walcott Son Allen Sanchez
    Aguero Deeney Costa

    Subs: Hojbjerg Amat Wilson

I think sanchez is bound to explode he was not overly impressive over the last few games, so it is due time for an impressive performance from him.
