Hall of Fame Analysis – Part One

The break from Premier League action has handed us the opportunity to take a look at the latest standings in our Live Hall of Fame.

This ranking system is applied to everyone who takes part in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues – both the free and members league. Managers’ performances over the seasons are then traced to give a Hall of Fame rating.

This first article in a two-part analysis will take a close look at the histories and strategies deployed by those leading the current live HoF rankings. This has been updated to take into account Gameweek 11 and can be viewed by Members via this link.

The second part will focus in more detail on the players they have drafted and reveal the HoF leaders’ template.

If you would like to know more about the Hall of Fame we have included a quick guide in this article. Alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson talk you through it.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of each season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab on the home page.

Live Hall of Fame Top 10

There is no shifting long time leader Ville Ronka from the HoF summit.

The Finnish manager is ranked 64,886 this season but his FPL history suggests he will be climbing far higher by Gameweek 38 to once again top the ratings. His lowest finish was 4,668th in 2012/13 and highest 90th in the following campaign, across a nine-season career that has included four top 1,000 finishes.

This term has seen Ville once again adopt tried and tested tactics of avoiding hits, saving transfers to enable him to take two at a time, and keep a close eye on the transfer market to hop onto successful bandwagons. A fruitful Gameweek 4 wildcard, where he moved from a season low 530,027 to 295,498 heralded a steady climb into the top 100,000. As with all our top ten, his Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips are in intact, with the latter two likely to be saved for double Gameweeks.

Currently, he has just one Liverpool player, Roberto Firmino, in a midfield that also includes Alexis Sanchez, Joe Allen, Darren Fletcher and Raheem Sterling. With just 0.7 in the bank it remains to be seen whether he will look to recruit the latest popular bandwagon Eden Hazard in time for the next Gameweek. It is possible that the potentially injured Sanchez could be ditched.

Matthew Jones (aka MJ6987), has climbed from 10th in the live HoF to second and is now 3,521th in the overall FPL rankings. A great start, in which he gained a Gameweek 1 rank of 10,062 has been key to his stellar campaign.

A Gameweek 6 wildcard helped too. This saw him avert a slide, which saw him finish the previous Gameweek with a rank of 72,681, and cement a top 10,000 rank from Gameweek 7 onwards. He looks well on course to notch a third top 1,000 finish.

As with Ville Ronka, Matthew has yet to take a hit this season, although he has made an early transfer leaving 1.2 in the bank. This indicates Sanchez has been jettisoned for Eden Hazard, to slot into a midfield that already includes both Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

Another climber is Jay Egersdoff, who moves from 15th to third after reaching 3,298th in the overall FPL rankings. A Gameweek 6 wildcard saw him rise from 44,965th to 12,177th and stay in the top 10,000 from the following Gameweek. A five-man midfield, of Stoke’s Joe Allen, Arsenal’s Sanchez and Theo Walcott, Liverpool duo Coutinho and Firmino, supplemented by Hull’s Adama Diomande as a third striker, has also been key to his success.

With ten seasons under his belt already, seven of which ended in the top 5,000, he has the pedigree to maintain this form.

Marlen Rattiner’s FPL rank of 41,539th has seen him fall from second at the end of last season to fourth in the latest HoF standings. His Gameweek 6 wildcard proved less successful than those above him, seeing him slide from 41,135th to 61,093rd. Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson’s Gameweek 11 absence also let him down recently, although his doubling up on Firmino and Coutinho helped avert disaster. A fourth top 1,000 finish in this, his ninth season, is still well within reach.

Dipping to fifth from third is Peter Kouwenberg who has an overall FPL rank of 47,279, his second stint inside the top 100,000 in a topsy-turvy season that saw him reach a low of 267,598 in Gameweek 2. A Gameweek 4 wildcard proved less than successful seeing him rise 50,000 places initially, only to slide back outside the top 200,000 within three Gameweeks. He has taken eight hits already, including one this week. Could he be another that has moved early for Hazard?

Bruce Savage is our third highest climber, moving from 19th to sixth place in the HoF, after reaching an impressive 3,827th in the FPL rankings. He is another who used his wildcard in Gameweek 6 to good effect, climbing 200,000 places and then staying within the top 10,000 shortly afterwards. His tactic of opting for a premium frontline of Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is clearly paying dividends in this latest campaign which forms part of an 11-season career that includes three top 1,000 finishes.

Slipping from fifth to seventh is David Meechan, who has nine seasons under his belt including two top 1,000 finishes. A fall to 286,560th in the overall FPL rankings saw David join the Gameweek 6 wildcard club, which helped him climb more than 200,000 places. Now ranked at 26,607 he has just taken his second hit of the season, indicating that he may well be another to have jumped aboard the Hazard bandwagon before the Belgian’s double price rise this week.

Sir Edo Nygren’s sensational ascent, from 66th in the HoF rankings at the end of 2015/16 to eighth, makes him the HoF top ten’s second highest climber. With an overall rank of 565th, he looks set for an impressive finish, in an 11-season career that has seen him earn top 5,000 final ranks seven times. His midfield of Sanchez, Walcott, Sadio Mane, Joe Allen and Firmino has been made possible by opting for a 3-5-2 formation that includes Diomande in attack. As with many in the top ten, a Gameweek 6 wildcard has proved pivotal to his campaign, seeing him rise to the edge of the top 1,000. So far he is yet to take a hit.

The highest climber and best ranked HoF manager is Mark Mansfield, who leaps from 109th to ninth after securing an overall rank at the end of  Gameweek 11 of 312nd. Unusually among the top ten, a Gameweek 8 wildcard was deployed, seeing him move from 7,824th to 1,853rd.

Going into Gameweek 12 Mark has already used his two free transfers, also indicating he is another to snap up Hazard ahead of his price rises. With two top 500 finishes already in his previous ten seasons, he looks well placed to march further up the rankings and challenge for the title.

Chris Greene dips from ninth to tenth after a disastrous Gameweek 11, which saw him finish with a below average score of 50 and drop to 65,999 in the overall FPL standings. A Gameweek 4 wildcard offered a short-term boost, helping his rank move from 82,446 to 25,525 but that proved to be his season high point, with four red arrows to follow. Ditching Eden Hazard for one of his two hits this season in Gameweek 6, in a move that also saw Sergio Aguero come in, was another instrumental Gameweek. This saw him initially rise to 26,996 but then slip down the rankings.

Chris is among the late bloomers in the HoF, finishing in the top 5,000, including three top 1,000 ranks, in the last six seasons. In the previous four seasons, 69,993 was his highest season position.

Notable Mentions

Among former FPL winners, last year’s champion Dimitri Nicolaou is having a torrid season. He slips from 1,357 to 3,407 in the HoF and is currently languishing at 1,524,376 in the overall rankings. Dimitri has taken nine hits so far and wildcarded in Gameweek 6 to no avail.

Tom Fenley, 2013/14’s winner, has also fallen down the HoF, from 488th to 673rd. He is currently 394,857th in the overall FPL standings. His Gameweek 8 wildcard saw him earn three red arrows in a row.

FPL champion of 2014/15 Simon March (aka Dufflinks) is another to fall, from 61st to 128th, after finishing Gameweek 11 with a rank of 333,085. As with Tom his Gameweek 8 wildcard also worsened his season, attracting three red arrows.

Among our Moderators and Contributors Evs is top placed at 14th, up seven places on his 2015/16 Career HoF ranking. Currently at 52,906th he has remained within the top 100,000 throughout the season and wildcarded in Gameweek 6.

Mark is the FFScout team’s second highest ranked FPL manager, moving from 49th to 27th. He is ranked 43,131st in FPL and has remained within the top 100,000 since Gameweek 7.

Yes, Benteke is a weird one
Was all set on removing him, then he gets the pen
If Sanchez is injured, the priority is Sanchez obviously
Palace seem to be in one of those losing runs that they go through every so often

tbf it would probably be quite balanced, imo:

      Shilton
      Nicol, Hansen, Butcher, Samson
      Gascoigne, Hoddle, Souness, Waddle
      Dalgish, Lineker

Limited defender and limited attacker but ok it's all opinion based.

Interesting pick though, I wonder if his media duties are making people think he was a better player than he actually was?

You don't play 85 times for England and over 600 times for Manchester United through the most successful period of their history if you are in way shape or form limited.. that would be my opinion

They are based on watching him over his entire career

Hell of a pundit too though

Fair comment but loads of players play a lot for top teams in the fb position who you would questions how good they are. It is just not a position most managers want to spend a lot of money on.

He was not the quickest, not the strongest, not the best technique, not the best passer, pretty good crosser, terrible finisher and goal scoring record.

This is from a neutral fan as I have no PL club allegiance so this is not an abu comment.

You might mock but tbf GJ was much better in a number of areas I mentioned above, it's just a oily he was so injury prone and that his positional sense was so bad.

G.Nev was a model pro but far from an excellent player (in my humble opinion of course).

Fair to say positional sense would be high on the list when looking for a top class full back

Neville widely regarded as one of the best full backs England and United have ever had..

Respect your opinion but a your initial reaction of shock at his inclusion was strange i must say given the competition

Tbf you are right my knowledge of the competition is pretty poor. I should also have been more cognisant of the teams who we are picking a best 11 for, as you say it is not a world 11 or even a recently successful international teams best 11.

Positional sense would be quite high for a defender but a lot more is expected of modern fbs than just defending. There is no way gnev would have held down a place in a pep team for example.

That's true the modern fb is expected to get up and down the pitch and influence at both ends but first and foremost defensive attributes should take priority.. Neville goal scoring record was dire but he got up and down the touch line all game long always overlapping Beckham and had an excellent cross..

    Sanchez, hazard, Firmino, Allen, Capoue

If Sanchez is out, who is the better replacement?

    KDB or Coutinho or Ozil/Walcot

    My team now:
    Coutinho - Kundogan - Allen - Walcott - Hazard
    Rashford - Aguero - Costa

    1. Kundogan and Rashford --> Firmino and Austin

    or

    2. Rashford --> Lukaku

There is the international games now so risk of injury and rotation? For example some players like Firmino, Coutinho... And is it Austin 100% opening-squad guy rest of the season? Even when Long is back..

I know, maybe I should wait.. But I am afraid that prices will rise, at this time I may just get Firmino and Austin. Then my account have 0£.

Good link with the second link, Mes! The content seems to suggest that Galloway will fill in for Dawson when he gets his 1 match ban, and Nyom will move around the defence - but it's equally a bit reassuring as someone thinking of getting Nyom in that he seems to be coming it at from a point where those guys are the default players in his defence.

Still thinking of getting Nyom in for Amat this week to get more cover defensively - not convinced by Pieters at all, and think Bournemouth will score at Stoke. Would be for a -4, but given WBA's next few fixtures I'm not too upset by that.

And as a Dirty Diego owner we've just gotta hope he'll be ok. Seems to bounce back for the Prem and only finds these kinds of injuries when he's away... but going to wait on doing any transfers (apart from the now-obligatory Sanch -> Haz) until all this is resolved haha. Always lots of scares / flags in IB, not totally warranted and many a bit knee-jerky from FPL towers / us in the community, so best to watch and wait

      1. Licious Lizard
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I was thinking that at well. More confident in Nyom starting now than after I read the article. So don't know why it said "watch out"

With WBA's fixtures 12-16 (%15) and even 20-27 (%21) are looking good. So if you can bench in gw 15,17-19,21 I think he is great value at 4.3.

Well I'm basically bringing Nyom in to "rotate" with Pieters - I don't mean rotate in the truest sense... basically, whoever has the "best fixture" will play haha

Well, Hazard looks better than Sanchez at the moment.
We still don't know if Sanchez will be ready for the Manu game, so if it's due to injury worries it's too early to transfer.
If you really need that 0.1 I'd do it. Though Hazard has one more int game I believe

don't know much he has tough competition on many positions dawson nyom galloway on full back

mcclean chadli in midfield but he is a Pulis favrt so I think he will find a position for him maybe dropping Phillips although he had a great last game

will have to watch and see

Wait til it's updated after the IB, but Brunty will likely end up playing, very much a Pulis fave.

I'm probably bringing Nyom in, so I'll be watching closely before confirming - might be that Brunt ends up at LB and Dawson carries on at RB, seeing him drop to the bench! Hope not, though... 4.3 is such good value

Nyom defo not secure by any means, he is a rb playing oop on the left so I would think either brunt, galloway or evans will have a decent shout of ousting him in the short term.

                How do you get that?

To me that sounds like he wants Galloway to stay in the team?
If this is the case then Nyom has no chance as there is now way he is getting picked over Pulis archetype defender Dawson. It is almost as if Dawson and McAuley had the same surrogate mother that Pulis always uses to "produce" his defenders.

I just got from the article that Nyom is safe at the moment and Galloway really needs to do something out of the ordinary to win his place.

Especially this sentence gave me confidence in Nyom: "Nyom’s got a few bookings, Dawson is on four, so that could give Brendan his chance. He’s got to take it and make sure he plays well and stays in the team."

I interpreted the above as Galloway could only fight for a spot when Dawson is suspended and then another chance when Nyom inevitably will get suspended.

                  Maybe I got it wrong...
We'll see. I am buying him.

Yeah I think I got the same really. Nyom is safe until Galloway gets a chance but it sounded to me that he wanted Galloway to nail that lb position for himself when he gets his chance.

I don't think Nyom has any chance of taking Dawson's spot so it is a straight fight between Nyom, Galloway, Brunt and Evans for that lb spot with Nyom safe while he keeps performing but he is after all a rb playing oop on the left side so hard to know how long he will hold his spot.

Yeah I agree his isn't nailed. But I still Think he is a good bet for the next 5 matches.

Guess we'll see what happens, but a 4,3 with good fixtures is a good bet even is there is a risk he will be dropped imo

Yeah defo worth a gamble but you wouldn't want an Amat or Kingsley in your defence beside him as he could be dropped without notice.

yeah defo worth a punt as he has the spot at the mo but I wouldn't hold out any hope of him getting the rb spot of dawson as Pulis loves him too.

If you bring him in I'd keep until/if he loses his spot and then get rid as he may be some time trying to get back in again. He seems to be gamboa's replacement in the squad and gamboa didn't get a lot of game time either.

Soz got busy! Yes indeed - that's literally the only reason I'm likely to be bringing him in, to give myself another body on the bench / on the pitch if required since Amat has been dropped.

Favouring him over Brunty at the moment because I would like to get Ozil in as my Arsenal cover, and can't afford him without having to go for Nyom. However, there's always the Wally option... I'm a Gooner, but I don't like owning Wally. One of the two most frustrating players to watch (other being le donkey) in our team.

Manager prefers Higuain. He will probably get 15-20 minutes tonight and then 60-70 or 15-20 again on the second which would be ideal.

Rules him out? You would think Pep is starting to learn his lesson?

Is there enough time for him to play a huge match v Brazil, travel half way round the world and recover in time to play in London at 3pm?

I'd rather he didn't start in the second match

Yeah of course, but I'll take any rest I can get for him. Also left minutes for him on a pitch to get injured

sun basing this on the fact that Chile are playing down the injury as they may not qualify for world cup if they lose these games. gunners are in the dark and so are we. you will find another article that contradicts that one in a few hours

chile are in a precarious position in their group, its no wonder that they are being cagey about the extent of the injury and that Sanchez is playing it down
