The Digest – Gameweek 14

Alexis Sanchez breaks the rules, a five-star Spurs get drowned out and Sergio Aguero prepares to split the Fantasy Football community. We say goodbye to possibly the most extraordinary Gameweek of the season so far.

The Player

The policy is that no single player can claim this spot in consecutive articles but, such is the impact of Alexis Sanchez’ 23-point haul, there could be no denying the Chilean.

Arriving in the same Gameweek as Sergio Aguero’s dramatic capitulation, Sanchez has perhaps signalled a shift that will influence our entire seasons.

More on that in a moment.

For now, let’s revel in the brilliance of Sanchez, who seems to defy the modern theories of football and produce devastating performances when firmly stalking in “the red zone”.

He’s a player who, physically, appears to operate on a different plane.

He boasts an endurance and robust strength that can carry through match after match, bouncing off challenges and recovering from tweaks and niggles that perhaps would derail lesser talents.

On his current trajectory, it’s difficult to see Sanchez stalling.

Olivier Giroud remains a factor, but Arsene Wenger would be taking a risk turning to his “Plan B” option at this point. It might yet arrive over the busy festive schedule but, as of now, Sanchez looks to be a force of nature that can only punish us further should we attempt to resist.

Park the debate surrounding Eden Hazard – he remains a key figure ahead of Chelsea’s ridiculously obliging fixtures.

We need to find a way to accommodate both – a seemingly impossible task last month, now made all the more obtainable by Aguero’s misdemeanours.

The Team

In any other Gameweek, the performances and output of both Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane would have snatched the headlines.

Added to this, Son Heung-min sneaked back into form with a spectacular goal, backed by an assist.

With Mauricio Pochettino also claiming a sixth clean sheet in the demolition of Swansea City, it’s clear that we are dealing with a team that can provide solutions for our squads across all positions.

Harry Kane’s form is undeniable. Firing five goals in four outings since his return from injury, he has provided an all-too-convenient solution in the light of Aguero’s combustion. It’s no surprise to see his ownership and price ascending at pace.

But Eriksen and Son may just go unnoticed as a result.

Up until Gameweek 13, the Dane had been a frustrating figure who had failed to deliver on his impressive underlying numbers. But three goals and an assist in his past two Gameweek appearances have seen him bubble up.

Son could also enjoy a renaissance.

The South Korean has only this week stated that his recent form has been blighted by injury, a factor that may explain his decline in output leading to him slipping back under the radar.

Reduced to just 7.2 ahead of last weekend, Son has since enjoyed an increase in ownership and, while rotation could be a concern, he may yet present a profitable complimentary asset to Kane as our striker.

At the back, both Danny Rose and Kyle Walker remain mainstays.

Both could see rests in Gameweek 16, which could see us switch sights to a fit-again Toby Alderweireld.

Now down to 6.3, the Belgian is a class act, a likely ever-present and a menacing goal threat at set-pieces.

Alderweireld has big scores to come and, should he prove his fitness tonight or at Old Trafford on Sunday, he surely has to be a new target heading into the White Hart Lane meetings with Hull City and Burnley.

The Talking Point

We surely have to rethink our stance on Sergio Aguero.

Just as Diego Costa is a different beast, so it seems we are left to contend with a new version of Aguero – one that still threatens goals but also comes packaged with a streak that can render him sidelined.

While we were perhaps willing to walk a tightrope for a 9.5 Costa, once again, we have to re-assess Aguero in the light of his price tag.

If Sanchez, Kane, Costa and Hazard can deliver over the festive period while the Argentine sits in the stands, it’s difficult to imagine many rushing back to re-install the City striker.

Typically, the fixture list smiles kindly on Pep Guardiola’s men on Aguero’s return from contention.

Clearly, the temptation will be great and, with winter Wildcards in play, we are likely to see a huge split in the Fantasy Premier League community.

Aguero was designed to be a fire and forget option. A one-stop signing and captaincy candidate, only to be replaced when the hamstrings gave way.

We could not have foreseen the events so far this season or the fact that Aguero would influence our campaigns not with his points, but by serving us uncertainty and dilemmas at regular intervals.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    a) Francis to Alonso for a hit
    b) Holebas to Alonso for a hit
    c) Play Francis
    d) Play Holebas

Also, what to do with Gundogan? Is there any good 6.5 and below replacement? Not anything worth a hit in this week right? Have Capoue on the bench.

    Thanks!

Would you do Kosc, Firmino, Rondon to Rose, de Roon, Ibrahimovic for -8 for a gw after this which would give:

    Foster Pickford
    Rose Brunt Pieters S.Ward Amat
Sanchez Hazard Siggy Can de Roon
    Ibrahimovic Costa Kane?

Either or, however, Smith is on the decline price wise where as Pieters is 80+ on price tracker, maybe hold Pieters as you may make .1 on him (if you got him at 4.4). Alonso is worth the hit though IMO

I can't get Alonso without selling one of Koscielny (bought for 6.0) and Walker (bought for 5.7) 😐

LADS, repost because bottomed and as I really need some help here.

    2.0 ITB and for -4:

    A) Fuchs -> Alonso (means I won't lose value on Fuchs and I'd have a good back line BUT I'd have to start Allen/Diomande )

    or

    B) Diomande -> Iheanacho (means I can play 3 up front and demote Allen to the bench BUT Fuchs is gonna drop and I'd have to start him in my back line despite them playing City)

Who are your other 4 defenders?

      1. phace
        • 7 Years

Pieters, Francis, McAuley, Amat. Grant/Pick in goal.
Swaying toward A because of the relative weakness of my back line, and Chelski have a solid run of games coming up.

Plus, my mid/att are relatively loaded (Sanch, Firm, Haz, Sig, Kane, Costa).

Already took a -16 a couple of weeks ago (and was taking hits every week for like 5 weeks before that) to achieve exactly your point. Probably would've just taken the -8 or -12 if I hadn't jumped like 300k places this week, so now I really want to try and minimise the hits I'm taking going forward.

            Hazard, Sanchez, Mane, Siggy, Fletcher

Value: 103.3, 1.3 ITB (Plan to spend this to upgrade Fletcher to a decent cheap 5th mid next week if Anichebe isn't good enough for a 3rd striker, hence switching to 3-5-2)

My defense is in complete shambles. Pick three:

    A) Kosc (STK)
    B) Matip (WHU)
    C) McAuley (che)
    D) ShawX (ars)
    E) Amat (SUN)

For me these essential/non-essential debates are nonsensical and they always involve premium options.

The stance of the poster usually reflects their own team, and of course why would it not?

But seriously, Sanchez has been ridiculous this season.

Quoting stats and sustainability to my thinking is crazy.

Look at his total points after 14 weeks, 110.

    Look at his PPG, 7.9.
    Goals? 11. Assists? 5.

    A midfielder playing striker? Check.

The argument re: sustainability leads back to a key point he has the quality to score points heavily and has the potential to do it going forward.

Why would anyone not own him?

To a point, but it's nowhere near as bad as not owning them. For instance, if you owned them all but picked Kan as your captain last week instead of Sanchez it only cost you 10pts, not owning them was a disaster

With Aguero off the scene for 4 weeks I'm not sure why "value" is being quoted as a reason for not owning Sanchez.

        Surely the cash is available.

        Agreed on your point.

He is the closest we have to Messi since Ronaldo was in the prem.

Anyone saying anything else is deluded.

But then again I have just captained him to 46 points so I would say that. He is partial to a game or two drought.

Stick him in and leave him.

Honestly, I have no idea. He has played every PL game so there is that although he played tonight when Trippier usually played the CL games.

We're slowly getting our first team back again with Toby expected to start at the weekend. For the sake of gaining some consistency Poch may want to continue playing his first choice players.

So Firmino has 8 blanks in 13 matches. Not too consistent for my liking

Only Capoue has more blanks(9) then him in top10 mids. Its just that he;s scored big in the games where he didn't blank

Another blank against WHU and he's out for Eriksen 😉

Eriksen loves scoring against Swansea, other than that he hasn't got near the goal threat of Alli.

              • 8 Years

Eye tests say something else re Eriksen vs Alli. Alli taking his chances in more dangerous positions while Eriksen relies on pretty difficult shots outside the box.

        2. Pochecinno
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

I think Eriksen is a good pick as well but I'd feel more confident with Alli's goal threat. He plays with the aura of someone who knows where the goal is and has a knack of getting into striker-like positions.

            • 11 Years

true but i feel alli and son making those runs will create space for eriksen to arive late to the box

bit like lampard. eriksen more clinical but alli requires a lot of chances to convert

8 blanks out of 13 that's alot and he's been in my team since GW1, his big hauls have kept him in my team and not many midfielders in that price bracket were firing before this week. It was only him & Cout but now we have Erikssen & Alli too.
