Moving Target

Moving Target – Jeffrey Schlupp

Last week saw new Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce make his first signing for the club, acquiring Leicester City’s Jeffrey Schlupp for a reported fee of £12.5 million.

The versatile 24-year-old, who can operate as both a full-back and on the wing, put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Eagles and made him debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to West Ham United.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Schlupp reckons his versatility could be key for Big Sam’s side:

“I enjoy playing anywhere down the left-hand side, left midfielder or left back. I will play anywhere in the team that the manager wants me to play though as long as I am helping the side… I was at Leicester for many years and I think the time was right to move on and take my career onto a different path and I saw this opportunity come along to play for Crystal Palace and it was a no-brainer.”

The History

Schlupp was born to Ghanaian parents in Hamburg, Germany, before spending most of his childhood in England.

He linked up with Leicester’s academy at the age of 13, and progressed all the way to the first-team squad in the 2010/11 season, before making his professional debut during a loan spell with Brentford.

Schlupp made 10 appearances for the then League One side, scoring six goals and registering one assist, playing primarily as a forward.

He then returned to Leicester ahead of the 2011/12 campaign and bagged a hat-trick on his senior debut for the Foxes in a 4-1 win over Rotherham United in the League Cup.

Schlupp made 26 appearances in all competitions for Leicester during 2011/12, scoring six goals and adding two assists, again playing in a number of different attacking positions.

It was during the 2012/13 campaign that Schlupp began to play at left-back, though, and was mainly utilised as a defender the following season.

In Leicester’s first term back in the Premier League in 2014/15, Schlupp played both in defence and midfield, though featured more as a winger, registering three goals and two assists in 32 matches.

He made 24 appearances during the Foxes’ title-winning campaign last season, scoring once and totalling three assists, but found the first-team action harder to come by this term, managing only five Premier League appearances.

Schlupp made his international debut for Ghana in November 2011 against Gabon, and has played 12 times for his country, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Upon the arrival of Schlupp to Selhurst Park, Allardyce immediately intimated the 24-year-old was likely to be used in defence by the Eagles:

“I am delighted we have been able to secure Jeffrey’s services, he is a player I have admired for some time and is a talented and athletic player. He will bring strength and experience to the defence and will be a major asset for the club.”

Palace have been short of options in the full-back positions this season, primarily due to the serious injury suffered by Pape Souare during a car accident in September last year.

James Tomkins, who can play at right-back, has also missed a number of matches due to injury, leaving only Joel Ward, Martin Kelly and Zeki Fryers as the senior full-backs at the club.

But despite the big money signing of Schlupp, Palace have still been linked with a number of high-profile left-backs, including Juventus’ Patrice Evra, Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt and Swansea City’s Neil Taylor, while Big Sam is still trying to get a deal for Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson over the line.

So while Allardyce has been talking up Schlupp as a defender, there remains some uncertainty over his likely position.

There’s a possibility he may see some action as a winger or wing-back, then, offering us some “out of position” potential, with the Ghanaian classified as a defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), priced at just 4.8.

That could certainly be the case in the short-term, given that Palace are without Wilfried Zaha who is on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast.

Having spent his formative years in his career as a striker, it’s no surprise that Schlupp’s strengths lie mainly in his attacking play, with his pace and dribbling ability perfectly suited to what’s expected of the modern day full-back or wing-back.

The 24-year-old is a competent defender, though, who is reasonably strong in the tackle, and could certainly help improve a Palace rearguard that has the joint-third worst defensive record this season, having conceded 40 goals in 21 matches.

Given the significant outlay on Schlupp, there’s little doubt he’s been bought in to be a regular starter, and with Palace’s upcoming schedule (EVE, bou, SUN, sto, MID) now favourable, he could certainly be of interest as a Fantasy asset.

During the first few weeks of his reign at Selhurst Park, Big Sam has reiterated the need for Palace to keep clean sheets in order to work their way out of trouble, and should he be able to oversee an improvement in that area, Schlupp should offer defensive returns.

His four goals and six assists from 44 starts over the past two seasons highlight an ability to produce at the other end of the pitch and potentially put him on our radars.

Saturday’s home clash against Everton looks set to provide us with an early insight into how Allardyce may look to use the versatile Schlup.

Should he line up in a more advanced position, he could attract some investment ahead of those favourable fixtures.

Encouragingly, his delivery out wide could be a key weapon as the new Eagles boss attempts to arrest Christian Benteke’s run of six matches without a goal or assist.

Schlupp registered a 26.7% cross completion rate in 2015/16, which betters the likes of Andros Townsend for Palace this season – the summer signing from Newcastle has supplied more crosses than any team-mate (115), with 23.5% finding their target.

Ultimately, considering we have yet to see any real improvement in the Eagles’ defensive displays since Allardyce seized the reins, few will be willing to take an immediate gamble. It may not be until the transfer window closes, and Zaha returns from the AFCON before we gain a clear picture of where the new boy stands in the Palace plans.

Have Eriksen and Alli in midfield, as well as Walker.

Is it worth removing Alli for Kane right now, or just leave it for a bit?

The counter to this is that it may be possible and dare I say it to 'cover' Kane's points with those two, but it does narrow me in midfield and longer term Kane may be better.

        Heaton - Jak

        Alonso - Walker - McCauley - (Ake - Amat)

        Phillips - Alli - Eriksen - Sanchez - Pogba

        Giroud - Ibra - (Barnes)

        2.4 ITB

Obviously have issues with Ake and Pogba not doing that well as a diff pick.

Chelsea defensive assets are more useful than their attacking assets imo, especially if they go on a run of grinding out 1-0s. Plus Everton have great fixtures and form. Furthermore, though Brunt offers great attacking returns, their defence isn't as strong as usual

    Evening all,

Intended to play a 3-5-2 the next couple of weeks as follows:

    Heaton

    Alonso, Brunt, Rose

    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips, Stanislas

    Ibra, Giroud

    (Robo, Carroll, Pieters, Amat)

    1.7 itb

Giroud injury has thrown a spanner in the works. To compound matters I, like many, went Costa to Giroud for a hit last week !

Have already sold Ake for Rose this week so no ft.

    A. Play Carroll this week if Giroud is out against Burnley then play against Watford (assuming he is back).Current plan is to roll transfer then sell Hazard for someone cheaper and upgrade Giroud to Kane after Arsenal play Hull.

    B. If Costa drops by .1 I can afford to bring him in for Giroud for a hit but that delays Kane move.

Costa not as appealing for 2 Cheslea fixutres after Hull and I think Kane could our score him between now and end of the season.

Thoughts, views, other suggestions welcome, cheers all.

West Brom had two clean sheets in August and only one since then. Their fixtures and longer-term reputation / Pulis factor makes a McAuley Foster double up sound decent but I don't know if I can pull the trigger. McAuley has been an absolute liability for them lately.

Might even splash out on Cech or Lloris as a Pickford replacement.

Heaton's poor fixtures with lots of away games is putting me off him.

Any other good options? Other keeper is Grant and his fixtures are awful.

Whatever you do, don't spend that sort of cash (Cech or Lloris) on a keeper. Just get Heaton. They can pull off a surprise CS against tough opposition (United for example) and he benefits from the save points anyway. Heaton has delivered all season, fixtures shouldn't be a deterrent imo

    Alonso Brunt Holebas Kelly Amat
    Sanchez Lallana Alli Pogba DeRoon
    Ibra Costa Defoe
    1 FT, 0.4itb

    A) Pogba + Kelly --> Baines + Mirallis(-4) , will have enough money to do Holebas --> Rose/Walker the week after

    B) Save and wait it out and maybe do the three moves next week? Only thing Pogba will have Hull at home and it would be difficult to sell!

    Thoughts please?

I'm torn between Phillips/Stanislas/Mirallis for that cheap spot.

Penalties for Stanislas is a big factor don't you think, Although Phillips's fixtures are awesome!

        What do you think?

Pens are not if Wilson isn't on pitch I think, which doesn't seem to be often.
I would think it could be close between them all so price maybe decides.
Phillips with so many targets for free kicks would sway me though

I have both Philips and Stanislas at the moment but will probably only keep/play Stan through the next two good home fixtures. Philips is better long term fixtures-wise and he looks a threat every time he plays. Could've had a goal v Spurs.

Also, I'm not sure but I think Wilson is the first pen taker for BOU when on the pitch

Thank you both!! just looking at it now and I think i figured it out!

Will do Kelly + Pogba --> Baines + Phillips(-4) tonight before price for both go up as they are both expected to rise..

Will give me enough money to do Defoe --> Lukaku FT week after!

          Thanks again 😀

Walker, less of a card magnet and more baps potential. Yes, Rose is more dangerous but you wouldn't want to pay that kind of money on a defender who could/will end up suspended for 2 games. Walker is productive enough going forward anyway

Cheers for the replies. Walker might be the go given Rose would need a transfer or benching eventually. With that said it wouldn't be the end of the world benching for one week though

Rose for me but then I've had him for 8-10 weeks. having been stung putting off getting Costa in when he was on four yellows I wouldn't read too much into Rose being on 8. Every chance it'll be 5 fixtures until he's banned and could be far far more

    Who to play?

    Walker - Man City (a)
    Yoshida - Leicester (h)

I know Man City are in pieces, but I can't see them firing a blank at home in such a big game. I'm slightly reluctant to bench Walker, but I feel Yoshida has better clean sheet potential.

    1. UnitedFan
      • 8 Years

Walker, you should never bench premium defenders no matter who they are playing, especially when they offer attacking returns like Walker does. If you really want to play Yoshida, bench one of your other defenders imo

      1. Hurricane Gilbert
        • 8 Years

I disagree. Away to a top 6 side means he is very much benchable if better options elsewhere. Yoshida!

Nah man, I remember last season I benched Bellerin during the NLD, he got 2 assists. You just never know. If you're gonna out a 6mil+ defender on the bench, you shouldn't spend that much on one

          1. Hurricane Gilbert
            • 8 Years
            7 years, 3 months ago

That was a freak score though. Also I think City will step up in this fixture. Most time you don't want to play Walker away to a top 6 sides. I have done it against Chelsea, Arsenal and United and he got like zero points in total. At home you should play a prem def every game though.

Fair enough, just my philosophy is to never bench a premium defender. If they have attacking prowess, the risk is to great imo

Depends on your bench. Yoshida at home to struggling Leicester without Mahrez and Slimani should be a CS.

Considered VVD myself last week on my WC after missing him at 5.3 because he rose out of my price range. Thankfully I settled on Yoshida as my bench option instead.

Bloody shame he lost his clean sheet because I needed the points to put me over 100 for the week, and I needed the draw for £2,500 returns on a £10 acca! Cashed it for £350 after Burnley scored regardless, which was quite good.

Nervous days huh. We are both suffering a crisis in defence it seems. I have Aké, Evans and Amat. Aké dropping tonight too. Ugh.

same situation here. ake -> cha, bers today to avoid 0.1 drop? it's for a hit but if evans is out I would do it anyway.

If you're priced out I'd be tempted. Otherwise, can afford to wait 🙂

I'm okay atm, it's Nyom Pieters Amat Jones Alonso, but I don't want to be playing Pieters every week plus Amat is surely gone from the Swansea first xi lol

Waiting on Gru news as well, so I guess I'll decide what to do on Friday. More hinges on Gru - if he's out, I'll want Kane in which means also doing KdB to Ozil, which isn't a bad move either. If not, I'll remove Nyom for either Coleman (think Baines is up tonight) or straight swap to Brunt!

Pieters out - maybe Adam Smith at Bournemouth? Or George Friend - back in the team seemingly at 4.4?
