Scout Notes – FA Cup – Wednesday

Two ties lead to single-goal victories for Premier League sides on a night decidedly short of many FA Cup thrills and spills.

Plymouth Argyle 0 Liverpool 1

A first-half header from Lucas (4.4) finally saw off a spirited Plymouth and secured Liverpool a home tie with Wolves in the fourth round.

The Brazilian netted from a Philippe Coutinho (8.3) corner but Jurgen Klopp’s young side couldn’t kill off the tie, with Divock Origi (6.6) having a second-half penalty saved following a foul on Alberto Moreno (4.4).

Klopp made nine changes from the side who drew with Manchester United on Sunday. But having named the club’s youngest ever team for the first cup tie, he drafted in only Coutinho, who was given another hour as he returns from injury, and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) to give the starting line-up at Home Park just a sprinkling of extra experience.

The England striker was a peripheral figure and Coutinho only an intermittent influence and as a result, the Reds struggled to break down their hosts, who were the width of a post away from dragging the match into extra time as they grew in confidence following the break.

One of Liverpool’s youngsters, Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.3), again impressed at right-back in the continued absence of the 11.5%-owned Nathaniel Clyne (5.8), who missed the Old Trafford match with a rib injury.

Aside from the result, the 18-year-old’s performance, and more minutes for Coutinho, were the major positives for Klopp when speaking post-match.

“I’m happy, really happy. It was very important for us. I thought 60-65 minutes was the perfect intensity for today. Good for him (Coutinho) and good for us.”

Liverpool will now have to attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final, face Wolves and then entertain Chelsea in Gameweek 23 during a busy last week of January.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Lucas, Moreno, Stewart, Ejaria, Coutinho (Wilson 65), Woodburn, Origi, Sturridge (Ojo 76).
Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Williams, Randall, Alves.

Southampton 1 Norwich City 0

‘Every game’s an adventure’ according to this year’s FA Cup marketing blurb.

Well if Southampton’s replay with Norwich was an adventure, it wasn’t an awfully big one. In fact it was just awful.

Shane Long (6.1) bundled home the winner two minutes into stoppage time to finally put a drab match out of its misery, earning the Saints a home encounter with Arsenal in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28.

Coach Claude Puel made eight changes to the side who lost to Burnley at the weekend, with only Long, Maya Yoshida (4.2) and James Ward-Prowse (5.0) keeping their places. The 11.8%-owned Virgil van Dijk (5.8) – a virtual ever-present this season – missed out with a knock.

Southampton had 10 shots on target to the visitors’ zero, but struggled to break down Norwich’s deep-lying defence – fitting for a side who, with just 19 goals, have the Premier League’s second worst scoring record.

Puel has not named the same side for consecutive matches all season. That lack of continuity explains some of his side’s toothlessness up front, as does the lack of a quality goalscorer since Charlie Austin (6.4) fell to a long-term injury.

No amount of tinkering by Puel seems to be addressing that issue, making the Saints’ forthcoming fixtures – Leicester City and West Ham at home, Swansea City and Sunderland away – attractive only as a chance for Fantasy managers to pick up points from defensive assets.

The Arsenal tie will be book-ended by the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool and a Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea. Such a busy schedule will no doubt prompt further changes by Puel.

At least his decision to make Yoshida captain against Norwich – and then single him out for post-match praise – suggests the budget centre-half looks key to Puel’s defensive plans.

“Maya made a very good season, playing well in every moment and with good concentration, winning duels and giving satisfaction. He made good progress since the start of the season.”

With Cedric, Dusan Tadic and Redmond also named on the bench, Fantasy managers can at least look to that trio with a degree of security ahead of Gameweek 22. It remains to be seen if Jay Rodriguez, withdrawn on 70 minutes last night, leads the attack.

Southampton XI: Lewis, Martina, Yoshida, Stephens, McQueen, Clasie, Reed (Romeu 71), Ward-Prowse, Sims, Long, Rodriguez (Redmond 70).
Subs not used: Taylor, Soares, Gardos, Tadic, Højbjerg.

Would you consider Kaku to Kane for GW23 instead of Giroud to Kane ? It would be one week punt and than Giroud to Kaku. Giroud have WAT and Kaku STO so maybe Frenchman is more likely to score.

I think both Lukaku and Kane are great options. Plan to own both

Kane edges it as he's playing in a freeflowing spurs attack who has averaged more than 3 goals in last 9 matches

Just keep and play both Giroud and Lukaku. Kane isn't a mile ahead of them to consider selling either with a plum fixture

    Article from yesterday: http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20170118/giroud-how-i-won-my-place-back

Giroud sees himself as a starter which is good. He wasn't always this confident. Let's hope he can continue with good performances and banging in the goals.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Coutinho or Coutinhyes

With travel sick Swansea visiting Anfield this weekend and Coutinho now with a start under his belt, could the Brazilian midfielder be among the best differentials for Gameweek 22?

Could he also be a captaincy contender?

Who is thinking of drafting him in?

Or are fixtures putting you off post Swansea?

Coutinho is among an illustrious list of probable FFS team of the year players that I'm yet to own. I'm still going to ignore him and hope he reverts to 2015/16 mode.

I would've snapped at the chance, but the fixtures and lack of Mane are making it a less straightforward choice. Liverpool also don't seem as free scoring as they were earlier in the season. Hoping for some clues from Klopp to see if he is definitely starting, too.

Tough call. liverpool has a tendency of winning against big teams.. But that doesnt necessarily means they;ll score big in those games.

Id probably avoid for now and get him around gw30 time when fixtures clears.

Would love to own him for the coming GW but will be fine not having him for the following ones.

Midfield is Hazard - Sanchez - Alli - Stan - Phil. All have ok to very good fixture. No room for Coutinho, even though I expect him to score 10+ vs Swansea

          I'm not sure.

Would obviously like to have a LIV mid somewhere down the line, and Couts is the best of them, but I also want to keep Sanchez, Alli and Ibra, and get Kane + Lukaku or Costa.

So not sure I will be able to afford him.

      No idea.

In a midfield of Phillips, Hazard, Sanchez and Erikksen, who would give way?

All have good fixture schedules, bar Hazard, and he's at home to Hull.

      Not worth the risk.

I've stuck with Lallana for now. Fixtures are mixed and they have a lot of games coming up. Liverpool will definitely get goals, but with the usual sharing between the midfield I could not bring myself to upgrade Lallana just yet. I hope I don't regret it.

PRO: Liverpool's best player. A good captaincy option for GW24 (important for non-Aguero teams) and a very good fixture this week.

CON: Liverpool have some very tough fixtures upcoming with home games against Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal. None of those will roll over at Anfield and they could well be low-scoring games.

SUMMARY: It's a decent move if it suits your squad but not one to do any surgery or take any hits for.

my season went drastically downhill when he got injured. Had recovered from a slow start to 270k.
Brought in Siggy for injured Coutinho and proceeded to suffer a long run of having to transfer injured players and OR sank to a bottomed 975k.
Am going to give him a week to look at him (and also Hazard) as the plan could be Hazard to Coutinho.
If I go 3-5-2 then Coutinho definitely comes in.
Stick with 4-4-2 and suddenly he's up against the likes of Lallana, Alli, Eriksen and a few others. Earlier in the season there wasn't quite such a choice amongst the mids as there is now.

Burnley are one of this season's worst sides away. They always fail to defend against quality players on the road.

I'm in the lucky position of owning both Giroud and Sanchez, but for me I think Sanchez is the ideal captain.

Remember the Tott v Bur game - it was the mids that prospered while Kane was unlucky not to score. Kane did a great job of occupying defenders. That's what Giroud does effectively too.

They only conceded 2 at White Hart Lane though, same as when they played Man City away. They pretty much always concede but they haven't been overrun in an away match for a long time. Swansea and Hull on the other hand...

Burnley were very lucky indeed not to concede more at Spurs.

Bur v Spurs away - conceded 30 shots!! (13 in the box)
Bur v City away - conceded 14 shots (5 in the box)

Given Sanchez and Giroud's form I'd say both good shouts.

I hope they do a Spurs in particular as I have to field Heaton too.

I think the key thing is that Swa, Hull and Bur are all terrible away - so captaining someone against them is a very good idea 🙂

Hull and Swa also have the added benefit of being awful at home too. 😉

If Giroud was ruled out then San(c)hez would be locked in. Not quite as appealing if Giroud is to start.

      Nope.
Apart from 1st part of Swansea game Sanchez was still having strong stats in previous games when Giroud was playing in the middle.
Also think Sanchez could still be fired up by early sub against Swansea and every chance Giroud won't go 90 minutes and Sanchez ends up as a 9 against a tiring Burnley defence.

I think Berahino has to prove himself all over again and also demonstrate his head is in the right place. Wouldn't want him if I was a Tottenham fan personally.

I'm a Spurs fan and I wouldn't say no. If we rewind back to last year, we were so close.

Poch could get Bera working rigorously in training. Get him sharp and match fit before integrating him into the first team set-up.

I worry if Kane gets injured, who would come in. Janssen isn't up to it...

He's a player with known attitude problems who has barely played for a year and averages less than a goal every four games in the Premier League. I'm not saying he has zero talent but Tottenham surely need to aim higher. There's a reason why it's the likes of Stoke being linked with him.

I get all your points, but realistically, who could come in?

Who's a clinical striker proven in the Prem? Defoe you say?

Defoe would be my first pick, but I can't see him coming to be back up. He is 34 and wants to score as many goals as he can before he retires. Spurs would be holding him back.

So who is the best option?

I'm not a football scout and don't get much time to watch games but if Berahino is the best option then Tottenham need a new scouting network.

Since when does Spurs even have a scouting network? They pretty much tap the players which are on Arsenal, United or Chelsea's radar.

Since these clubs don't need a striker, Spurs don't have a 'Poach' bid for any striker.

Young, English and crazily over-priced. I think clubs are starting to get wise to this after the Sterling and Stones ridiculous money for average players, just because they are English.

It was hard enough picking the right Liverpool player at the start of the season, let alone now with Coutinho coming back, Sturridge & Origi sharing minutes and Mane out for an undefined amount of time.

Seems stupid not having a Reds asset this week but I just don't know who is the best shout.

I'll probably just ignore and hope.

        Is he overachieving?

I like the guy but I find Liverpool such a minefield. You know they will score goals on the weekend but we don't really know what formation they'll play, who of the mids will be most advanced and that soppy bleeder Milner takes the penos.

I got sick of seeing Liverpool had scored 4, getting excited as an asset owner but finding out they somehow weren't involved in any of the goals...

You're right though, he's probably the sensible pick.

What is your preferred option out of the following (2.4m in the bank burning a hole in my pocket)

    1. Amat or A. Smith > Rose/Walker
    2. Phillips > Sterling
    3. Carroll > Benteke
    4. Something else (pls suggest)

    Full team:

    Foster/Heaton

    Alonso – Baines – Jones (Smith/Amat)

Hazard – Alli – Coutinho – Phillips (De Roon)

I've got a benching headache this week.

It's a fairly easy choice at the back. I'm going with
    Heaton (ars)
Daniels (WAT), Brunt (SUN), Chambers (WHU)

and Jakupovic (che), Rose (mci) and Jones (stk) benched.

Midfield and forward lines is a tough choice though. Please help me in benching one of this lot:
    A) Alli (mci)
    B) Eirksen (mci)
    C) Lallama (SWA)
    D) Phillips (SUN)
    E) Stanislas (WAT)
    F) Lukaku (cry)
    G) Giroud (BUR)
    H) Ibra (stk)

I'm tending towards benching either Eriksen or Alli as it's quite a tough fixture. On other hand City have just shipped 4 and Spurs are scoring for fun recently. AOA would be perfect this week but I've already used it 🙁

Also hard to choose captain this week. Ibra the safest choice perhaps? Lukaku vice-captain?

Comes down to Chambers v Rose. Pretty tricky, but I'd play Chambers too

Has to be one of Philips or Stanislas.

Can't even think of benching Eriksen against that porous City backline.

Rose over all of your defenders other than Brunt.

    Hey guys.

I was on the Rate My Team section of the members area and noticed that Baines has predicted points of 3.31 and Cedric has predicted points of 3.3 but it's telling me to bench Baines?

I think i'm going to play Baines regardless but wondering why RMT is telling me to bench Baines when he's 3.31 and Cedric only 3.3?

i'll be honest mate i don't think you can own Baines and bench him. He will know and he will punish

Nah, I won't be benching him. Not a bad fixture and on Pens. He will start all games.

Soton are good at the back but poor going forward so Cedric will only get a clean sheet tops, and I think they will concede.

Baines is getting a penalty this weekend, i can feel it 🙂

It does this a lot. There's a lot of odd stuff going on in RMT. Barely look at in nowadays tbh, it's just a condensed form of a decision making if you lack time, something I thankfully have plenty of 😀

If I'm struggling to decide which defenders to start, RMT is normally very helpful.

        I'm terrible picking defenders.

The benefit of RMT is that it takes the long view, so it helps prevent me from basing all my decisions on the past game or two or three. But it's not so good when there are meaningful recent changes. Everton seem to have settled down, and are at least sometimes playing Baines as a wingback, and he has pens back in his locker, with number of pens in the league up this year. Soton defense seems to have lost their way. But none of this really seems to have registered with RMT as yet.

I am playing Baines, benching Cedric, and not giving it a second thought.

Same thing here. Baines is above Friend, but it's telling me to bench Baines

Bilic: "The physios told me Carroll had whip lash at the end of the game but he trained hard on Tuesday and hopefully he will be okay”.
