Opinion

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 22

I’m on the attack and seizing the initiative. Either that or I’m making hasty and foolish transfers, as a slave to the rapidly fluctuating player prices.

The jury is still out; you can decide.

On the back of a couple of strong Gameweeks and a healthy rise in rank, my solution to maintain such momentum is to throw away four points and bin my most valuable squad asset. Jermain Defoe has departed, gently shaking his head and muttering something about being involved in 70% of Sunderland’s goals.

I look away, put my hands over my ears, and soak up some Romelu Lukaku goals on YouTube.

The erratic Belgian arrives back in the fold to no doubt bring joy and frustration in equal measure.

Costing me just 7.1 back in Gameweek 4, Defoe’s prolific scoring was always a pleasant bonus. At 9.5 and with a four point hit bundled in, there’s rather more pressure on Lukaku to perform: I’ve got big expectations.

Come 4.50 this afternoon, the sheer folly of this latest trade may reveal itself, but at least I can be content that Defoe’s departure sits well with my policy this season. When the opportunity arises, when my head and gut align to reveal a potentially profitable move, I will go with it.

“Faint heart never won fair lady”, which in my world equates to “the timid will struggle to earn green arrows.”

If I had a notch on my bedpost for every green arrow won so far this season, my bedpost would be decidedly scruffy, and any fair lady foolish enough to see it would wonder why I keep a chisel under the mattress.

There’s also extra motivation to show such courage: my mini-leagues have become a factor.

It’s just like the old days when Granville’s Fantasy Football habit wasn’t distracted by the real world and making decisions that actually matter.

In recent seasons I’ve either been too far behind or ahead to concern myself with rivals, but this campaign has been very different.

I’m currently chasing Torres Magic up one ladder, and some upstart called Owen Hargreaves in another.

That’s brought a new determination and an opportunity to monitor and act on an opponent’s decisions. There’s new interest in every Gameweek and pressure on each decision. This is what brought me to Fantasy Football all those years ago; it feels good to have those feelings revived.

Those knowing glances with Granville in the office are currently replaced with throwaway exchanges in the comments at 1am. It’s a rivalry that spans timezones – not the same but welcome nonetheless.

Overall, it feels like I’m in touching distance of a memorable season. I’ve probably already made enough “correct” decisions to have banked a credible rank if I now play to the percentages. It might be wise to give in to “dullard” tendencies but I’m trying to resist.

For now, I’ll stick to the plan. Take a few hits and a few risks and see where it gets me.

At least if it all goes awry, I can just log off before Torres Magic wakes up. He can’t hunt me down in the office kitchen like Granville used to.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    G2G?

    Hennessey
    Mustafi - Baines - Luiz
    Sanchez(c) - Hazard - Pogba - Phillips
    Rondon - Giroud - Ibra

Grant - Jones - De Roon - Holgate

Choice is between Jones and Baines for me. Team is not template as I am chasing in ML so going for differentials such as Pogba, Rondon, Giroud, Mustafi, Hennessey.

Lost on last post 🙂 great preamble, Mark!

    Morning!

Just my luck to see Nyom is now maybe ok and Brunt, who I got in for him when it was looking doubtful, is now doubtful with a back problem haha

    Anyway - gtg?

    Randolph / Jaku
Brunt Alonso Jones / Pieters Amat
KdB San(c)hez Alli Antonio / Fletcher
    Ibra Gru Rondon

Next week KdB -> Eriksen - don't think it's worth doing today for a -4.

    Thanks and good luck all!

Hmm, I'm just not sure if it's worth a -4.

I'd also then have Hazard when I could have Eriksen and the Spurs double up for their good run of games, plus I can imagine City being really ready for this game. Can definitely see the logic - I'd also considered getting Coutinho in - but I'm just not sure, as I said, so I'm going to not take the hit and play cautiously. I've fallen short a bit this year due to too many -4s.

Thanks HM - I actually don't care too much about keepers, I figure the ceiling is the lowest of any position (lucky pen saves??) so I always go for the bargain basement in order to have my cash further up the pitch where the ceiling is higher... I actually had Pickford prior to Randolph!

I foolishly traded him for Pickford on my WC waaay back in GW6. Probably cost me about 20 points, that decision.

I've had a season full of misplays like that so far.

The doubts surrounding Brunt's back injury are legacies from last week - not new reports as far as I can see. Pulis hasn't brought up new concerns, while he mentioned Brunt as a doubt prior to Spurs. Local reports also don't mention Brunt as a doubt and actually say he's likely to start at LB if Nyom is not considered.

I think Nyom is on the bench with Brunt at LB, regardless of Nyom's availability.

      1. diesel001

Agree. I worry about the backline of Evans is not fit and Nyom doesn't play. Very slow and Spurs made them pay the price last week.

I'm not so sure. I think he'll start, mainly because they don't really have any other options with the Nyom farce, but he's not fully fit in my eyes.

      3. Individual
        • 10 Years

Yeah that's the bit that I was holding on to, Mark, that TP didn't say anything negative about Brunt nor in fact mention him by name at all, which all in all tends to be a good sign.

Well hopefully I've made an OK call here; with Chadli seemingly in the first XI again I'm not sure where Nyom would fit in if Brunt is back at LB. Hopefully it isn't at the latter's expense!

Do we expect Brunt to play in middfield again with Nyom cleared? Looking to bring him in for Lovren next week

Expect Nyom to play next week, because of they got the clearance too close to the game. Pulis already prepared the team without Nyom... But you never know, there is a small chance. And Nyom really wants to play now.
