Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Thursday

A spirited Hull City take Manchester United’s unbeaten record but it is the Red Devils who will face Southampton at Wembley after an entertaining EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Hull City 2 Manchester United 1 (2-3 on aggregate)

Hull City won the battle but lost the war as Manchester United did just enough to book their ticket to the EFL Cup final.

Marco Silva made seven changes from the team beaten at Chelsea and still produced strong evidence of the positive influence he’s brought to the Premier League strugglers since taking the job, overseeing a first defeat for United in 17 matches.

Jose Mourinho also made changes – five – to the team that drew with Stoke, although the side still included regulars Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic , David De Gea and Phil Jones .

Centre-half Eric Bailly, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, was not available but could be in line for a start in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

A Tom Huddlestone penalty after a foul, of sorts, on Harry Maguire put the Tigers ahead before Pogba’s second half equaliser looked to have put the tie to bed.

Hull refused to accept that fate and Oumar Niasse, given his first start, converted from a David Meyler pass late on to give the home side a deserved victory.

Silva took the opportunity to give second half run-outs to new signings Lazar Markovic and Evandro and also threw on in-form striker Abel Hernandez in a late bid to take the tie to extra-time.

The in-demand Robert Snodgrass (5.8), who has been sidelined with a muscle issue, wasn’t even in the squad, however, as he contemplates a number of offers to take him away from the KCOM Stadium, with West Ham the current favourites to land him following a medical today.

United’s fine unbeaten run might now be over, but it was the overall result that mattered, setting up a February 26 date with Southampton at Wembley.

That means no Gameweek 26 derby at Manchester City, with a double Gameweek 34 or 37 now likely. If it is the former, that would involve another away match, at Burnley. If the latter, then United would have to travel to both City and Spurs in a daunting double-header. Neither scenario is likely to satisfy Mourinho.

Throw in the resumption of Europa League duties just two days before the FA Cup fifth round ties begin on February 18, and even United’s squad will be stretched to the limit.

That could have repercussions for FPL’s current most popular player Ibrahimovic, who is owned by 43.3% of managers.

Mourinho has not been shy in using the Swede in all competitions this season, but such a punishing schedule will likely require rotation of even the biggest names. With United already missing Gameweek 26, FPL managers will have to decide whether to take that hit by sticking with Ibrahimovic and then hope he is saved primarily for league duties through a frantic February and beyond.

As for Hull, confidence is returning and the results are starting to come, as Silva pointed out post-match.

“That is three wins from our last three home games and when I arrived here, the team hadn’t won for two months. We need to continue this home form because it gives confidence to my players.”

Silva’s next foray’s into the transfer market will be crucial to their prospects, along with that home form.

But their next three league fixtures – United (again), Liverpool and Arsenal – suggests the time to look at any of their assets is from Gameweek 26 onwards when their schedule dramatically improves.

Eldin Jakupovic’s absence is somewhat troubling for his 20% ownership, with David Marshall recalled in goal on Thursday evening. Omitted from the matchday squad, it’s presumed that the 3.9 priced keeper was one of those rested with Premier League duties in mind.

Hull City XI: Marshall, Tymon, Maguire, Dawson, Meyler, Huddlestone, Clucas, Maloney (Goebel 64), Niasse, Diomande (Hernández 70), Bowen (Markovic 59).
Subs not used: Kuciak, Robertson, Elabdellaoui, Weir.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Carrick, Herrera, Pogba, Lingard (Rooney 79), Rashford (Fellaini 90+1), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Shaw, Fosu-Mensah.

Is their any reason why the Manchester derby can't still be played in GW26 ?

Neither club have a midweek fixtures, and it's not a European or International week. It would also leave GW34 and GW37 free for games postponed due to either side processing into the FA Cup QF's or SF's.

Not true. The replays will be that week if required. Doesn't mean that the games concerned couldn't be re-scheduled that week and postponed again if need be.

Having said that, I doubt the games postponed for the EFL Cup Final will be that week. That was always unlikely for other reasons.

They wouldn't use this midweek in that case. If both get knocked out in the 4th round (which, as has been mentioned, is unlikely) they have a spare weekend for the 5th round so they would almost certainly use that weekend. There is still a chance that it could be still in GW26 if they neither require a FACR5 replay - but this is very unlikely given there's only 10 days or so between the 5th round and the proposed replay date.

Guide to what flags mean on Fantasy Premier League

full red flag - player is suspended, injured, or hasn't made a match day squad even when they'll clearly be available for the week after
25% flag - player is seriously injured, but we don't know for how long for yet
50% flag - player is not likely to start, usually coming back from injury and lacks match fitness
75% flag - we actually have no idea, but someone on twitter thinks they might have a knock

    thanks for listening

The worst thing is that there is a hair-trigger response about putting a 75% flag on but a stubborn reluctance to take it off again. Almost as if someone doesn't want to be shown up for having put it on wrongly in the first place. 😕

There's a reason behind that - a flag can be added with a report(s) generated by the press without confirmation from the club - a doubt generated by the press, with reports to accompany it, creates doubt on that player and FPL managers should therefore be warned.

Flags are normally only removed when the clubs or the players confirm availability. As the clubs only speak on Thursday/Friday, then the doubt flags normally remain until that point.

If a flag is removed purely on the basis of a press report or an image of a player in training and then the manager then expresses doubt on Thurs/Fri, then the flag would then need to go back on and that would surely cause even more frustration.

Consider that, it can only takes a manager to say "he should be available" to create doubt on a player so an image or a report of a player back in training on a Tuesday can be reversed when the manager speaks on a Thurs/Fri.

Would folk really want flags coming on and off constantly based on reports or training ground pictures rather than remaining on until there is stronger and more official evidence of availability?

Martinez came out 45 minutes after Hazard was flagged and said "He received a blow to the calf, but he is not hurt". Despite that the flag remained for 7 days.

That's the kind of thing I am talking about.

The fascination with the flags this season baffles me if I'm honest. Nothing has changed for years and yet it seems to be the hottest of all hot button topics on here for the last few months. Not saying it isn't a potentially important issue (albeit I don't pay attention to the flags personally) but I can't understand why it's considered so much more so this season. It's also pretty obvious that the flags are being added/removed in good faith based upon an established process and the data available, the level of outrage is so disproportionate...

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 14 Years

I would say there are instances of flag abuse this season that there never was before (at least, never called out before). I believe someone in FPL Towers wanted to slow down a Hazard rise earlier in the season so threw a spurious yellow flag in there - which was a bit naughty. But I'd agree - I'm not a fan of people on here sounding Mark out and getting him to flag a player because of some injury rumour.

I honestly don't think there was anything sinister in the Hazard (or any other) flag - it was based on him staying down after a tackle, signalling he needed to be subbed and the manager saying he had a knock in the post-match interview. I think a 75% flag was fair enough but I realise opinions will vary which is fine - some people seem to disagree though! 😉

What I think ought to change is the impact this has on price changes but then again, I pay very little attention to price changes, I certainly don't have the sense of entitlement that some have regarding them.

Mark implied he has a hand in deciding when flags are added removed and there are clearly closer links between fpl and ffs . I think people were unhappy with how things were done before but they had no one to aim at . Now they have Mark . I think this is why the level of complaining has increased . I am not saying it's fair or warranted I am just saying why it is happening

Yeah, you're probably right that Mark has been pushed into being the figurehead for FPL flagging, maybe that's the cause. Still feel the outrage over something so trivial is a bit weird though 🙂

    4. MTPockets
        7 years, 2 months ago

I don't see flagging as the problem. It's the herding & rate of price changes with growing popularity (not appropriately adjusted for in whatever algo they use this season), which can be amplified by flags.

And pray that Zaha coming back doesn't ignite Benteke .

Defoe has offered some of the best value I've had all season, but is it time to ship him for Lukaku? I do have value in him (bought at 7.1, now 7.9)

      Grant
      Alonso, Rose, Baines
      Haz, Sanchez, Alli, Phillips
      Ibra, Kane, Defoe

      Mannone, Davies, Amat, 3.9

a lot depends on the draw, if premier league teams are playing one another then we'll have a situation where whoever wins has their game cancelled

Any ideas as to how Hull will be lining up? Who will play upfront? Niasse or Hernandez?

think Hernandez is first choice still. Niasse can play wide cant he?

Tricky with Hull right now, imagine Evandro will play attacking mid plus they are sure to buy with £20m burning a hole in their pocket

Hello everyone, I've been caught up with work and couldn't be on here in the past few days

I wanted to know if there's been any news/article/hot topic on potential blank GWs and DGWs (Apart from the article written about 2 weeks ago)

                  Has there been any update?
