DraftKings Returns for Champions League

The Champions League returns and with it, we revisit our partner game DraftKings.

We’re now into the final sixteen knock-out phase, with DraftKings laying on an exclusive Fantasy Football Scout contest, with new depositors earning free entry.

Sign up for a DraftKings account and deposit funds before tonight’s pair of 7.45pm kick-offs, and you’ll gain a free $3 entry.

You can use this to get involved in our contest and take on Fantasy Football Scout community members, competing for a prize pot of $225, with $75 going to the winning manager.

DraftKings are also offering a full suite of Champions League contests over the two days, with the $4 entry Sweeper contest topping the bill with its $20,000 prize pot. The winning manager picks up $2,000 in this contest, with prizes awarded right down to 1292nd place.

If you’re new to DraftKings, be sure check out our strategy guide which should help you get to grips with the concepts and the key elements of squad selection.

In a Matchday that includes both Real Madrid and Barcelona, funds are likely to be tight, with many DraftKings managers likely to gravitate towards the premium-priced pair Cristiano Ronaldo ($10,900, F) and Lionel Messi ($11,200, M/F).

Finding value could be vital, then, so, to get you started, here’s our key player picks over Tuesday and Wednesday’s ties to help form the nucleus of your eight-man squads.

Tuesday Player Picks

Fixtures
Paris St Germain vs Barcelona
Benfica v Borussia Dortmund

Ederson Moraes – Benfica – $4,400 – G
Although the Portuguese outfit kept a pair of clean sheets in the group, it’s mainly save points we’re expecting from their number one.

Likely to be the cheapest option from Tuesday’s pair of matches, Moraes made 17 stops in five Champions League appearances, registering a healthy 9.1 Fantasy Points Per Game (FPPG), ahead of a home encounter with Dortmund.

Eduardo Salvio – Benfica – $6,000 – M/F
Expected to recover from a minor ankle problem, the winger is likely to be a key figure if Benfica are to progress past Dortmund – Salvio netted a trio of goals and served up four assists in an impressive showing in the group stage.

The Argentinian is worth considering if you’re seeking a low price midfielder after Dortmund lost 2-1 at Bundesliga basement-dwellers Darmstadt in their weekend league match.

Lucas Moura – PSG – $6,200 – M/F
The in-form Brazilian entertains Barcelona in fine form, having provided three goals and a pair of assists in his previous six Ligue 1 outings. In the group stages, Moura set-up two goals and scored against Basel over five starts.

An average of 5.27 crosses per match and 13.4 FPPG in his 11 DraftKings appearances this season makes the PSG man an intriguing mid-price option.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Dortmund – $8,400 – F
Dortmund make their way to Benfica as the highest scoring side over the group stages, having found the net on 21 occasions.

Averaging 3.4 attempts, Aubameyang netted four of those and provided a single assist over his five appearances. Having scored 17 goals in 18 Bundesliga outings, it’s fair to say that if Thomas Tuchel’s side are to progress, their star striker’s contribution will be crucial.

Luis Suarez – $8,600 – F
Priced lower than team-mates Messi and Neymar ($9,900, M/F), the Uruguayan could turn out to be a strong differential pick for those managers willing to take the risk.

Over five outings in the group stages, Suarez bagged two goals and a trio of assists. Meanwhile, a weekend brace in the 6-0 win over Alaves means that he roll up to PSG as the top-scoring player in La Liga, having found the net on 18 occasions.

Wednesday Player Picks

Fixtures
Real Madrid vs Napoli
Bayern Munich vs Arsenal

David Ospina – Arsenal – $4,000 – G
With Petr Cech preferred for Premier League duties, the Colombian has started all of the Gunners’ European matches this season, keeping two shutouts while making 13 saves.

Arsenal have met midweek hosts Bayern ten times since 2000/01 and kept a clean sheet on three occasions, yet, as alluded to above, it’s Ospina’s save points that may prove invaluable against a side that’s won 13 and drawn three of their 16 home matches in all competitions so far.

Faouzi Ghoulam – Napoli – $5,000 – D
The Algerian has produced a remarkable 219 crosses in DraftKings across 26 appearances in all competitions this term, helping him accrue 11.8 FPPG over those matches. Crossing numbers are a vital metric in DraftKings as they are worth 0.75 points each.

Placed fifth for successful crosses in the group stage, Ghoulam also supplied a trio of assists to underline his attacking potential as Napoli head to the Bernabeu looking to extend an 18-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

Marcelo – Real Madrid – $5,300 – D
We also call upon Real’s rampaging defender for tomorrow evening’s clash with Napoli. Intriguingly, Zinedine Zidane set-up in a 3-5-2 formation at the weekend, with the attack-minded Marcelo fielded as a left wing-back.

After supplying 22 crosses and a pair of assists in his last four La Liga outings, the Brazilian is our preferred defensive pick, though team-mate Danilo is also a tempting prospect after starting the last three in all competitions. In the event that Dani Carvajal remains sidelined, his likely replacement is available for a bargain $4,600.

Toni Kroos – Real Madrid $6,900 – M
The midfielder missed out at the weekend due to suspension so should be fresh for the visit of Napoli and looks an assured starter.

After providing nine assists in La Liga, Kroos’ dead-ball duties make him a relatively cheap route into the Real Madrid attack. In DraftKings, a strong 11 FPPG includes 117 crosses over 24 appearances heightens his credentials.

Dries Mertens – Napoli – $7,100 – M/F
The Belgian scored four goals and provided as many assists in the group stage.
Mertens’ importance to the Napoli attack is further demonstrated by his recent form in the league – an eye-catching 13 goals and five assists in the last nine Serie A outings makes him a tempting prospect.

To add to the appeal, opponents Madrid have secured only a single clean sheet in their last six La Liga and Copa del Rey ties.

Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich – $8,800 – F
Worryingly for visitors Arsenal, Bayern Munich fired attempts on goal (118) than any other side in the group stages.

Averaging four attempts per appearance, Lewandowski scored five goals in the six group matches and registered more efforts inside the box (18) than any player.

Crucially, the Pole has form against the Gunners, bagging two goals and as many assists in six outings, while a 21.2 FPPG in DraftKings over ten appearances (which includes world cup qualifier matches) this season indicates he suits the format.

I just want to say that I don't like it too much when FPL don't unflag players we know are available hours/days before a match, while they don't waste time to inform us about incidents like Lukaku hasn't travelled to the camp 12 whole days before deadline, just to affect the transfer traffic.
And posting "bonus points added" last night with a McAuley photo, so ironically, while it's a huge mistake which can be fixed.
Yes I have Brunt and that decision cost me points in my ML, but the official page posting that in my face is too much.

As we know now if there is a doubt a player will play the next match then a flag is given. The club has confirmed he has an injury, he has gone to a specialist and the local press are reporting that widely. It's a small doubt, but a doubt so as with all similar incidents a flag is the usual course of action.

I have to agree re the McAuley tweet though - it wasn't a wise move by them given the controversy.

I didn't care much about the controversy (Brunt owner) but the McAuley tweet wasn't a very good idea. Adds fuel to fire and creates more bitterness.

People already hate on that account and send abusive tweets, a McAuley picture isn't going to change anything. They didn't make the decision but people don't care about that and a lot of people tweeting in, including those with bigger FPL accounts don't even understand the rules.

I hope and imagine the people working on the account were sat back with a little smile as it wound people up 🙂

True, all innocent banter...but twitter is a vast and unwieldy beast, where a light heated joke can quickly turn to mass abuse. Seems odd that they would want to provoke more of that rather than less.

The flagging process is pretty consistent, despite what people may think. Moreover, anyone with half a brain cell would google 'Lukaku injury' after seeing the flag and then read about it. You should not be worried by the people who do not, as they are not your competition.

As for McAuley, I'm a Brunt owner and lost my H2H in a cash league to a McAuley owner (off the bench too, ouch). However I am prepared to accept some decisions that go against me, taking solace in the fact that I've probably benefited from others.

I'm with you on the McAuley tweet. Infuriating when you've been doubly shafted with a poor decision; McAuley owners given points for something my Brunt should have rightly been given points for instead.

The flag system is what it is, but I agree it's a little flawed in it's current state. Perhaps it should have less impact on price movements, particularly for innocuous "injuries" that turn out to be nothing, e.g. the player should perhaps have to mis a GW before the removal of the flag resets his NTI.

I thought that tweet was great - it's only a game after all, I can understand people being annoyed at the time but this was two and a bit days after the event, if people haven't got over it by then then they are taking it far too seriously.

I just smile at all the fuss and pages and pages of arguments and debate over two/three West Brom defenders in a seemingly innocuous 2-2 draw. This could only happen in FPL!!

Reminds me of Fuzzy Warbles crusade for his Cedric points, which was epic.

was a bit paddypower, which could be viewed as a good or bad thing.

i feel bad though for fpl having to deal with thousands of ignorant tweets though thinking they actually have any say in goals. they take goals they don't award them, they also take assists but in that case have the power to award some extra ones. it was given by the most official sources as a mcauley goal and evans assist, sources which couldn't give a t*** about fantasy football

If there's a mass TC DGWK fail then he's in with a shot.

Also if he at least captains the obvious TC DGWK player he could really minimise the risk.

If he C someone who score less than 14 points he gains from it, though.
Getting 7+ points from the same captain two games in a row isn't exactly money in the bank.

    Jesus > Llorente/Carroll
    Jesus > Costa (-8)

Stupidly made a transfer after the Spurs game and brought Mane in and it's now priced me out of a straight move for Costa. Would you go for the cheaper option to look at something like this in a few weeks.

    Sanchez - Siggy - Mane - Sterling/Sane
    Lukaku - Kane - ?

I have 2FT's and pretty happy with my team for going foward, will feel ok benching Sanchez & Ibra for GW26 if need be, but conscious that if I don't use 1 of my FT's I will lose it ... Any suggestions? Alli and Phillips are my main concerns.

    Grant - Pickford
    Alonson - Chambers - Brunt - Coleman - Holgate
    Phillips - Antonio - Sanchez - Siggy - Alli
    Carroll - Ibra - Lukaku

I wouldn't get rid of Alli or Philips this week.

In fact they are 2 guaranteed starters next 2 weeks.

You can wait on that team for news on carroll.

If looking to use a tranfer the s guaranteed starter in defence an option.

Holgate the concern. I have him and not looking like he will start gw28 but I dont have spare transfers to rectify that problem.

If it is MMA gloves, Mayweather would have to adapt massively and could easily be KO'd by one punch from Conor.
Apparently the rules may allow elbows so that could be a factor.

Mayweather wins in a boxing match.

McGgregor wins in everything else (MMA, general street fighting)

McGregor would also put up more of a fight in boxing then Mayweather would in MMA

Definitely. But even if it was MMA, i think Conor would have too much of an ego to try take him to ground or clinch. He would probably try outbox him to prove a point. an MMA fight is highly unlikely though.

Agree. Furthermore, the transition from MMA to boxing is less than that of boxing to MMA, so for Floyd's sake, it should be a boxing match. By the way, McGregor's work in the clinch is underrated

I think he will last a few rounds, if not take it to decision. He's used to taking harder punches from little gloves (more power), and never been KO'ed. Mayweather definitely has power, but not enough to knock him down with them massive gloves straight away.

rumours he had a staph infection relatively close to that first diaz fight. i'd worry about mayweather if it went into the later rounds he's surely lost that competitive edge that makes you go that extra mile in training.

...anyway i agree with fedolefan below in general, it's all a bit silly

true, pure boxers wouldn't stand a chance in UFC.

Its like sticking Aguero on a rugby pitch..which I'd gladly pay to see btw.

it's win win for mcgregor. he'd destroy mayweather in anything other than 100% boxing, and if it's 100% boxing he gets a gazillion dollars for losing to one of the best boxers ever

Khabib's main strength is wrestling. I honestly do think that while McGregor's punches aren't the most powerful (not that they aren't at all), he's the best in term of striking due to his speed and accuracy. Ask Alvarez lol 🙂

McGregor will slap khabib around. Mark my words. He got rocked by Micheal Johnson, who is no where near the level of striking of McGregor.

I don't think so I for one would rather conor focused on UFC than this but hes all about the money now sadly as I think hes one of the most exciting fighters to watch in the cage just needs some deecent opponents because alvarez was garbage and should never have got that shot

I agree to be fair, he should have defended his FW belt first. However, after watching him destroy eddie (he was on a completely other level) i think he wouldve become LW champion sooner or later. He got the shot because money talks.

What is the point of this garbage and how are people even remotely interested in it? I don't have any interest whatsoever in seeing a match between the best tennis player and the best ping pong player, so having a hard time understanding the hype in a match between champions of two different sports. This'll work in WWE where everything is scripted but what are we even looking forward to with this match?

think if it was gw1 next season now then he might go with the younger man and stick. but it's a situation where a guy returning from injury has to displace the match-fit rival. also we seem to easily forget mannone was #1 at the start of the season, pickford only got in due to injury

Pep's interviews have been a little strange recently but this was a nice tough from him - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/feb/14/bournemouths-harry-arter-thanks-pep-guardiola

GW26: Hazard home to Swansea, Snodgrass away at Watford. Favour Hazard at home (and I’m probably captaining)
GW27: They play each other. Favour Hazard!
GW28: Hazard probably blanks but so will a lot of people.

Maybe bring in Snodgrass for GW28/29/30 when they’ve got Bournemouth, Leicester, Hull.

Chelsea and Everton have the most appealing fixtures until GW31 (where you will definitely want Sanchez back). Barkley has the advantage of a GW28 fixture, but I'd back Eden and Pedro both to outscore him over the next five gameweeks (even with a likely blank)

might have a look in gw32. still doesn't look right, and yaya is playing every week these days (penalty taker).
he's been a massive flat track bully this season and still couldn't score against bournemouth which would worry me

        Heaton
        Alonso Coleman Mcauley Chambers
        Alli Siggy Philips Carrol
        Kane Lukaku

1 FT, subs Sanchez Ibra Yoshi
        6 players for gw28

        Best option ?
        A Sanchez to Mane/Hazard
        B Ibra to Costa
C Yoshi to Hull defender (bench T Caroll, adds another gw28 player
        D save

So Jesus is out for sure, and maybe Sanchez to get him later.

Alli Ericksen Siggy Philips ( Alexis )
        Costa Lukaky ( Jesus )

        1FT

        A. Sanchez, Jesus -> Hazard and 11.2 striker ( 0.1 short to get Kane) [-4]

        B. Sanchez -> Hazard, bench Jesus and play Siggy

        C. Sanchez, Jesus -> Kane and a Liverpool Mid [-4]

        D. Just replace Jesus and bench Alexis - with whom? defoe? Must be registered 10.0

        E. Jesus, Ericsen/Alli --> liv mid and Kane [-4]

        or Wait ??

I'm one of the many folks with the Stanislas/Friend problem: both on my bench, neither contributing at all. Which would be better to fix going into the next gameweek? Getting Maguire for Friend might make a lot of sense...
