Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

A Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick puts Manchester United in charge while Spurs toil on Belgian soil in a mixed night for the two Premier League sides remaining in the Europa League.

Gent 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0

Spurs’ away woes continued as they were beaten by their mid-table Belgian opponents and then suffered an injury scare involving striker Harry Kane.

Spurs have now failed to win on the road since January 1 and were second-best for huge swathes of the Europa League Round of 32 first leg, with only a fine save from Hugo Lloris keeping the deficit to just the one.

Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko, in for Christian Eriksen and Heung-min Son, were Mauricio Pochettino’s only changes from the team beaten at Anfield, and the coach was bullish before kick-off, as if keen to justify his team selection.

“The Premier League is very important, but we have a two-week break. We want to get into the next round of the Europa League and FA Cup. We need to try to win those competitions.”

If the league title is looking like Chelsea’s to lose, the remaining Champions League spots are still a five-horse race, so prioritising the Europa League makes plenty of sense.

But Fantasy managers with Spurs assets – there are seven players with at least a 6% ownership base – might question Pochettino’s desire to maintain campaigns on three fronts when his squad is already stretched to the limit.

And that was before Kane’s injury, which Pochettino elaborated on post-match.

“I think we need to assess some players. Harry Kane got a knock on his knee, different players too. We need to refresh the team and we’ll do that. Tottenham will play in Fulham on Sunday. It’s not the name of the players, it’s the club. We’ll see, but we’ll put out a team with aims to win and be ready again to compete.”

Kane himself played down any problem, saying “it should be fine” when asked if he would be fit to face Fulham.

Without Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose, Pochettino has reverted to a back four that has compromised the team’s defensive stability while greatly reducing the attacking impact of Dele Alli, given a much freer role when Tottenham employ wing-backs to create attacking width.

With Kane starved of service and Son inconsistent, Spurs are suddenly struggling for goals – they have just three from their last four league matches – and rarely threatened in Belgium.

The next ten days now look key for those of us with Spurs players in our squads. If Pochettino is true to his word and fields another strong side which prevails against Fulham in the FA Cup, then Gameweek 28’s trip to Crystal Palace will be postponed.

The second leg of the Gent tie follows next Thursday before Gameweek 27’s home fixture with Stoke – two matches in four days that will stretch Spurs’ squad, and Fantasy managers’ patience, further still.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Dier, Davies, Wanyama, Dembele (Son 68), Winks (Eriksen 80), Sissoko (Nkoudou 71), Alli, Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Trippier, Onomah, Wimmer.

Manchester United 3 Saint-Etienne 0

A canny Zlatan and a compliant referee moved Manchester United to within touching distance of the Europa League Round of 16.

Much like his Spurs counterpart, Jose Mourinho opted for a strong line-up, with Sergio Romero and Marouane Fellaini coming in for David de Gea and the ill Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Unlike Pochettino, the United boss has a squad of real depth and he utilised a number of his attacking options from the bench to take the tie away from Saint-Etienne in the second half.

Ibrahimovic’s hat-trick was painful for both the French and his 1.8+million Fantasy owners, coming as it did during a comparatively barren spell of just one goal from his last four league starts.

The Swede bought the free-kick from which he opened the scoring with a heftily deflected shot. That was followed by a tap in at the far post for his second following fine work by substitute Marcus Rashford and then he relied on the referee’s generosity once more when he fell in the penalty area, under minimal contact, picked himself up and stroked home the resultant spot-kick.

United rode their luck before the break and dominated after it, although Saint-Etienne were left to rue missing a couple of fine chances to secure an away goal. Then again, Paul Pogba, who hasn’t scored in six league matches, was just as profligate when heading against the crossbar from close range.

Mourinho’s squad remains strong, which is just as well when you’re fighting on four fronts. If, as expected, United see the tie out next Wednesday in France, they will be back in European action on March 9 and 16 – before trips to Southampton and Middlesbrough respectively.

The matches are going to come thick and fast for the Red Devils from now until the end of the season, but if any club has the squad to cope, it is United.

Mourinho certainly wasn’t taking anything for granted when he spoke post-match about the return leg in France.

“(Ander) Herrera is suspended, so it is a good rest for him. He has been playing every match. But, you know, I always respect football, and I know that football can be nasty with you. I don’t want my team to be punished, so I will go with a strong team.”

The 39.6%-owned Ibrahimovic aside, Fantasy managers have been relatively cool on United assets recently, in part because they won’t be back in league action until Gameweek 27.

A possible Gameweek 28 blank and the likelihood of squad rotation to combat the major fixture congestion to come is unlikely to change that stance, even though Mourinho’s men have an attractive domestic schedule through to the middle of April.

Man United XI: Romero, Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Mata (Rashford 70), Herrera, Fellaini (Lingard 45), Martial (Young 85), Pogba, Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Rojo, Schweinsteiger, Darmian.

What is your favourite DGW moment across all seasons of playing FPL???

    I'll start off with mine

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Zlatan - ditch, bench or keep?

For Zlatan owners - has his hattrick made you think twice about ditching for the blank Gameweek 26, especially with BOU up next in GWK 27. Did you always intend to bench him anyway? Or will you still take him out, given he is likely to only play once in the next three GWKs.

For Non-Zlatan owners - are you worried about GWK 27 against Bournemouth. If he can break the hearts of St Etienne in that manner, surely the Cherries will be no match for him?

It may have been the worst hattrick in history. In FPL Martial would probably have been awarded with the first goal too. In saying that im keeping Ibra over Sanchez (bought at 10.9)

It was certainly one of the worst.
The free kick was a foul by Zlatan who simply jumped at his opponent and knocked him over. The free kick should have been given the other way. The resulting goal could also have been disallowed because of Fellaini's blatant push on players in the wall - or is that allowed these days?
He also went down far too easily for the penalty and the ref should not have awarded it.
So basically he scored one efficient tap-in against a poor defence and was very lucky to benefit from poor decisions by the ref for the other two.
Zlatan's dubious hat-trick does not suddenly make him a better Premier League prospect than Costa and others.

Only Love Can Break Your Heat - St Etienne. I absolutely loved the Master at Work remix, probably their best ever.

Zlatan owner. Hattrick has made no difference. Need to get Lukaku in, so I will either sell Sanchez (to fund an upgrade for Lukaku), or Ibra (straight swap) or both (Lukaku + Heavy Hitter mid). Whatever I do, I will have Ibra for GW27 and captain him, even if it means selling Kane.

Like hopefully most of us, I am waiting until at least the early part of next week, and ideally until next Friday, before making any decisions.

I either play Holgate (SUN) or play someone in place of Zlatan or Sanchez. It's a tough decision as I think Holgate will likely start, it's a prime fixture for a CS and I would prefer to not use those transfers bringing a player in then out

I'm erring towards 5-3-2 with Carroll, T as first sub

I decided to sell Zlatan a few weeks ago (I turned my back on God and followed Jesus) with a view to getting him back in for 27. Have the squad depth to cover 26 and 28. Nothing has changed apart from the shattering disappointment of Jesus(c). Home against Bournemouth too good to miss, and a great run of fixtures after 28 leading up to the DGW's.

And the connoisseurs choice is the original 'Only love can break your heart' by Neil Young

Always planned to bench-I don't fully get the continual reference to two gw blanks-the majority of good FPL picks are very likely to have a gw 28 blank so it seems fairly neutral to me as it doesn't seem a good tactic to load up with players from the only 3 games currently guaranteed.

Like many on here, bought for 11.1 and with a decent GW 27 lined up he was always to be benched for GW26.

Hopefully a few goals will help slow down his sales and price drop.

Excluding the Blanks he has a good run of fixtures up the potential DGWs.

I would guess most have profit in either Sanchez OR Ibra, therefore one to benched and the other sold and bought back cheaper after GW28 because it is hard to carry 22+ mill on the bench for 4 games.

It was a pretty awful hat trick as hart tricks go. A snail allegedly over-took that free kick post-deflection and a tap in and a penalty versus one of Zlatan's favoured French league foes don't make me feel bad about selling him.

Nothing definite until this weekend's games, but probably gonna keep Zlatan as I have a lot of value in him and transfer out Kane for Lukaku instead. Spurs look poor atm and Kane might be out for the next game anyway. Also likely to get rid of Sanchez as I got on him quite late and like to look of Mane against Leicester.

I was never going to sell him, I want him as captain in GW27 and last night's hat-trick makes no difference to that whatsoever.

If anything I'd rather it hadn't happened. He will be a more popular captain in GW27 than he might otherwise have been.

Sanchez is the one that will leave for me. Who is he going to hurt with blank-liv-blank?

My plan was to bench him 26, now reinforced by his hattie. Hopefully everyone sells and I captain him 27 or they spend transfers hokey-kokeying 🙂

I sold him for Costa. Additional game and price fall for Ibra and rise for Costa seems benefitial for me. Also Zlatan did not produce tons of points recently.
I don't know if it is good idea to chase Total Value at this stage of the season, but I have a feeling to maximise it before doubles.

He has a history against st etienne always expected him to score a few. Already dropped him and not scared about the bournemouth game the best he will get is a goal or an assist

Thanks for the St. Etienne reference, can't remember the last time I heard that song.

I sold Zlatan two weeks ago for Jesus so I am in a slightly different situation than the rest. Hope it gives me an opportunity to go for a differential, just have to find who it is.

I think regarding this hat-trick everybody needs to be cool. Utd have been free scoring in Europe. In the premier league, they're a different animal. They're angsty. They don't score many. They're nervous.

Zlatan scored probably the most ridiculous, fortuitous hat-trick I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, I don't recall ever seeing such a bizarre mesh of goals. His penalty was a belter though.

Zlatan plays once in three. Utd have a ludicrous number of games coming up. Bournemouth won't roll over, like they showed v City. OK, they're poor away from home, but I believe that keeping Zlatan for this game is loaded with warning signs - blanks v Stoke, Hull, Burnley at home are just three. And if he doesn't do well, how will you feel? If he scores only one, how will you feel? What if Costa scores more? What if Kane does during his very favourable run?

Let's not forget that Zlatan also scored in Europe during his barren premier league run before and it didn't help his domestic return at all. This ludicrous hat-trick won't be giving me any sleepless nights over my decision to sell him for Costa. In fact, I would double down on it if I could. Even if he does score, it still won't be a good decision to keep him and bench him twice.

Zlatan v Bournemouth will be one of those match-ups which will be pored over here and everywhere for a week seeing most managers captain him and ending up with a 12 point captain at best.

A little late to this topic but I sold him for Jesus ahead of GW25. Obviously ecstatic how that one worked out. Would have to take a hit to get him back. Considering booking a dentist's appointment for when Man U play Bournemouth just to make me feel better.

You know my thoughts Phil. I'm not for selling Ibra, buying him back for one GW (captain or not) and then having to sell or bench him gw28. If you're already well set for the blanks though and can afford those luxury type transfer then fair enough.

My thoughts on that option are based on a reshuffle of my forward line, as having Kane as well as Alli and Erik, together with Coleman, Baines and Lukaku will give me 6 players in the one game in GW27. Then I can stick with 3-5-2, which may well still be the best way forward.

Just got a lot of decisions to ponder. I think a lot could change though with one or two cap upsets, so best keep all the options on the table.

    Heaton
    Alonso *Coleman Holgate *Smith
    Hazard Eriksen Alli *Phillips
    Costa *Lukaku

    [Pickford Pieters de Roon Ibrahimovic]

    1.2 ITB

    26 Holgate > *Brunt
27 Eriksen or Alli > *Sigurdsson (play Pieters v MID)
28 Pieters > *Mawson or Robertson / Maguire

Leaves me *7 active Gw28 players... is it worth considering more hits? Not sure who else I'd particularly want going forwards...could feasibly upgraded de Roon to a 5.5ish mid.
    Thoughts much appreciated - Cheers

A structural part of the above-ground anatomy of a number of species of plants, a diaspore that, once it is mature and dry, detaches from its root or stem, and tumbles away in the wind. In most such species, the tumbleweed is in effect the entire plant apart from the root system, but in other plants, a hollow fruit or an inflorescence might serve the function.

Well what do ya know, I thought it was just a bit of dust.

Scotland have had(for my personal joy) some important bands throughout the years. Aztec camera now also springs to mind and I'm gonna take some time to reminis them on youtube now also.
Jesus & mary chain I still listen to, if not daily, at least every week.

Some songs just makes you feel like you've just been run over by a truck the first time you here them. Loaded and moving on up where like that.
Blues from a gun by jesus absolutely one of those, probably the top one together with(non Scotland connection) NIN - head like a hole

    Lukaku v SUN : 9 - 7 – 3
    Costa v SWA : 4 – 7 – 1
    Hazard v SWA : 9 – 1 – 0

Looks like a straight fight between Costa and Lukaku for the armband this week – slightly favour Lukaku for form, explosiveness and Sunderland being a lot worse than Swansea!

Chileans plan national protest against Arsenal

A protest planned against Arsenal, in solidarity of Alexis for Wednesday, March 1 in the Chilean capital of Santiago.

    https://www.facebook.com/events/1897215150562729/

“The Chilean people are tired to see one of our stars working by himself so his team could move ahead. We don't want him to play for [Real] Madrid, nor return to Barcelona. The truth is that we don't give a [FUN] where he would play, we just want to see him fighting alongside another 10 [players] to get results. No longer alone.”

Morrison is a decent shout but for the next two fixtures and he at least plays the third fixture [gw 28], albeit away at eve.

Not sure Morrisons minutes are as certain as they were. With Evans back, one of Nyom, Brunt, Phillips, Chadli, or Morrison has to make way.

The Brady shout is a good one

    1 FT 1.3m ITB

    Jaku (Foster)
    Alonso Holebas Brunt PVA Williams
    Alli Eriksen Phillips Siggy (Sanchez)
    Lukaku (Ibra Diomande)

Use FT to get rid of Sanchez or Ibra? Or save FT and play 541?

A lot riding on out-of-form spurs there. I'd replace Sanchez, but be careful of protests in Santiago

        7 years, 2 months ago

I like King, but he isn't nailed enough for my liking, Afobe could easily take that ST spot from him any game. I honestly think Stanislas is their best attacker, and can't understand why he doesn't start games at the moment. I will wait for the FA cup, but Yoshida or Diomande look like the obvious ones to change to me, might get Carroll for that 3rd striker if he is fit and none of the PL teams get knocked out. Ideally Chelsea or Spurs will get knocked out and I can get Costa or Kane in for Ibra...

    Jaku

    Brunt Baines Coleman Alonso

    Alli Phillips Siggy De Roon

    Lukaku Carroll

    Bench Valdes Amat Sanchez Ibra

    1 FT 4.3m itb

GTG or should look at Sanchez out? Got him at 10.9 so lot of value locked up in him but want Chelsea coverage. De Roon to Pedro perhaps then out for Antonio for gw28?

Ibra and Sanchez is a lot to bench for 2 weeks out of the next 3 (most likely). I'd wait for FA cup now, since prices are fairly stable, and then get either Hazard or Costa if you're sure about Chelsea, I prefer Mane myself.

Mane is a good shout and a good differential as leader I'm chasing has Hazard but not Mane. Yep will wait until weekend over before deciding.
