The Scout Squad – Gameweek 26

With EFL Cup finalists Southampton and Manchester United, as well as their respective league opponents Arsenal and Manchester City, missing out in Gameweek 26, we have a smaller talent pool at our disposal as we reveal the players under consideration for this Friday’s Scout Picks.

The Scout Squad article aims to give a greater insight into the decision-making process behind our final selection, as Mark, Paul and I list the 18 players we believe have the greatest chance of success across the four positions, listing our nominations in rank order.

The discussions and disagreements that will take place behind the scenes are then showcased, as the three of us look to back our players for a place in the Scout Picks, as well as our Spot the Differential articles.

Finally, we will also reveal the Community Champion who has been selected by our lottery to represent the community and be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher.

Goalkeepers

With three nominations and top place billing from Mark and Paul, Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic looks to be firmly in the boxseat for the goalkeeper’s jersey in this week’s Scout Picks.

Since Marco Silva seized the reins on Humberside and reinstated the 22.4% owned Swiss stopper into the first XI, Jakupovic has made a mockery of his lowly 4.1 price tag.

Over the last five Gameweeks he’s kept two clean sheets, against Manchester United at Old Trafford and Liverpool at home, and also picked up four FPL bonus points.

For Gameweek 26, the Hull keeper faces the league’s worst away attack when Burnley drop by the KCOM Stadium, with the Clarets scoring just five goals on the road.

I’ve also turned to Jakupovic but have only handed him third spot, as I fancy Sean Dyche’s troops to score. While across their season their away goals record is indeed poor, Burnley have improved in recent weeks, finding the net in each of their last four road trips.

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet (4.7), who also features Mark’s selection, is my first choice. He visits Leicester City next Monday, with Claudio Ranieri’s men just unable to find the net: the Foxes are without a goal in six successive Premier League matches.

Others in the running include Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes (4.6), who gets the nod from Mark and I, with Paul standing alone in recommending West Brom stopper Ben Foster (4.7) and Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey (4.3).

With Baggies’ defenders offering points potential at both ends of the pitch, Foster looks unlikely to earn a Picks berth.

Defenders

A hugely impressive home record makes Chris Brunt (5.1) my top choice defensive options and perhaps the key West Brom asset under consideration.

Brunt, who may well earn a midfield role when Bournemouth drop by The Hawthorns, has accrued 61 FPL points in his last seven home matches, including three goals and as many assists. The Cherries’ clash offers him the opportunity for further attacking returns given that they have shipped 15 goals in their last five league matches, more than any other side.

Mark marginally favours Seamus Coleman (5.9) to emerge as Gameweek 26’s top scoring backline asset, with Paul and I handing him second spot ahead of Sunderland’s visit to Goodison Park. The 14.6% owned Everton full-back looks another shoo-in given that he has delivered clean sheet or attacking points in each of his last six matches, including two double-digit hauls.

For Paul, Marcos Alonso (6.7) is the most secure source of defensive points. The Chelsea wing-back welcomes Swansea City to Stamford Bridge having conjured more goal attempts than any other defender this season.

Given that Paul Clement’s troops have shipped 26 goals away from the Liberty Stadium this term, the Spaniard could even be primed to add to his four-goal tally. Bizarrely, despite a string of strong performances, Alonso is still only owned by 15% of FPL managers.

Kyle Walker (6.3) looks another certain pick, with Spurs squaring up to Stoke City at White Hart Lane.

The right-back tops the assists table for defenders with six and gets the nod from all three of us as the favoured Spurs option in the absence of injury victim Danny Rose.

Mark and Paul’s faith in Hull City’s clean sheet prospects at home to Burnley spills over to their defender selections, with Harry Maguire (4.4) earning an endorsement.

“A close-call this, because I’m wary that left-back Andrew Robertson also has merits. Certainly, he could be a more secure option in the long-term, with Harry Maguire set to come under threat once Michael Dawson and Curtis Davies are fit. But, for now, at least, I’m sticking by the big man and his goal threat promise. I believe that Maguire has a double-figure score brewing and it could well arrive against Burnley. ” – Mark

His 11 goal attempts over the last six Gameweeks, which is more than any other defender, has clearly piqued their interest.

But with clean sheets being the bread and butter of a strong backline pick, I’m backing Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne (5.8) is a stronger bet.

The 9.1% England international tops the chances created table among defenders this season and, as has already been mentioned, Leicester City have consistently fluffed their lines in front of goal.

Midfielders

We seem to agree with the 189,000 FPL managers who have drafted in Sadio Mane (9.3) during the FA Cup break, with the Liverpool winger earning top spot across the board.

With the Reds’ play geared to creating space for wingers and central midfielders to bomb on, the Senegalese international is reaping the rewards, having been involved in just under a third of all his side’s goals this term.

With Leicester conceding nine goals and without a clean sheet in their last four, Mane looks poised for further returns from his King Power Stadium visit.

There’s also broad support for Spurs’ Christian Eriksen (8.7) and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.3), who both appear on track to gain Friday call-ups.

With 21 goals conceded and only two clean sheets on the road, Spurs’ 15.3% owned Danish schemer, who has 11 assists and five goals this season, will be expected to prosper against Stoke City.

Meanwhile, Hazard’s exemplary record at Stamford Bridge, having notched five of his six double-figure hauls at home, makes him another strong option, especially given Swansea City’s aforementioned unenviable defensive record on the road.

There are several disagreements further down our midfield selection.

Mark and I favour Ross Barkley (7.1) to bring in the points when Sunderland visit Merseyside, given that he is Everton’s top chance creator over the last four Gameweeks.

But for Paul, the 0.1% owned Ademola Lookman (5.4) presents an intriguing differential in the Toffees ranks, having fired seven close range efforts over the last quartet of fixtures, just one less than the in-form Romelu Lukaku (9.9).

“I’m handing Everton’s Ademola Lookman a call-up for the visit of Sunderland. He fired four shots against Middlesbrough last time out and was the only Toffees player to register more than a single goal attempt. Having averaged an effort every 18 minutes since arriving from Charlton, he looks a great value option at 5.4 given that Everton have netted 13 goals in their last three at Goodison.” – Paul

Paul is also on his own in selecting Michail Antonio (7.0), for West Ham’s trip to Watford. While he has had more shots than his team-mates over the last four, he has failed to find the net or assist in that spell. With Andy Carroll set to miss out at Vicarage Road, Antonio is likely to lead the attack once again.

“Michail Antonio’s goal threat on the road and current role up front bodes well for a return to form as West Ham roll up to Watford. His total of nine big chances away from home is more than any midfielder this season, and with Robert Snodgrass and Manuel Lanzini supplying the ammunition, the former Forest man will be hoping to mirror his two-goal tally against the Hornets back in Gameweek 4” – Paul

Instead, Mark and I think his cut-price team-mate Robert Snodgrass (5.8) may emerge as the best option among Slaven Bilic’s charges. Over the last four matches, Snodgrass has created more chances than any other West Ham player, despite only starting twice in the league following his January move from Hull City.

“This was another tight call. I’ve not yet seen enough of Snodgrass in this West Ham team to be totally convinced, so backing him now is a punt. However, I can see goals in the Vicarage Road clash and I believe it’s only a matter of time before we see the Scot instrumental for the Hammers.” – Mark

Forwards

While there is division among our midfield picks, there is no such conflict when it comes to our unwavering support for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku.

With his four goals in the demolition of Bournemouth fresh in our minds, we’re backing him to once again profit from a strong Goodison Park tie against weak opposition. With just one clean sheet on the road this campaign and 11 conceded in their last six league matches, visitors Sunderland appear to be easy prey for Lukaku.

Harry Kane (11.2) and Diego Costa (10.6) also earn three votes, albeit with the Spurs striker seen as the marginally favoured option by Mark and Paul.

Kane’s hat-trick in the FA Cup last weekend against Championship side Fulham looks to have swayed my colleagues ahead of Stoke’s visit.

For me, though, Costa’s record against visitors Swansea gives him the edge.

Across four Premier League encounters, the 36.7% owned Spaniard has racked up seven goals against the Welshmen, including a brace in Gameweek 4: the only time he has scored more than one goal in the league this season.

A skirmish may break out over the third striker slot.

I’m backing my goals imminent table by sponsoring Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (6.3). Over his last four matches, the Spaniard has recorded 10 goal attempts, scoring just once.

However, up against the Crystal Palace defence, Negredo is presented with an ideal opportunity to improve on that poor conversion rate; over the last six Gameweeks the Eagles have conceded 11 goals and kept just a single clean sheet.

Paul will face an uphill struggle convincing Mark and I that West Brom’s Salomon Rondon (6.7) can end a scoring drought that stretches back to Gameweek 16. But given that Rondon has scored five goals with his head and Bournemouth have the second worst away record in terms of allowing headed opportunities, this may well be the week he finally rewards his patient 7% ownership.

Elsewhere, Watford skipper Troy Deeney (6.7) gains the backing of Mark and I. With an owernship of just 5.3%, the Hornets forward has dipped under the radar despite scoring in three of his last four league games.

Paul would rather back M’Baye Niang (6.0) to shine against the Hammers, having scored and assisted once since joining Watford on loan from AC Milan. Currently, Niang sits in less than 1% of FPL teams.

Finally, Mark is eyeing up a punt on Hull City’s Oumar Niasse (5.6) who, with Abel Hernandez set to miss out, looks set to lead the line for Marco Silva’s troops when Burnley pay visit. The Everton loanee scored off the bench against Liverpool in the Tigers last home outing and impressed at the Emirates in Gameweek 25.

“I was encouraged by Hull City’s performance at Arsenal. Much as I’d like to find room for Lazar Markovic in midfield, I’ve opted instead for Niasse as a differential up top. He looks an assured starter and will be relied upon to provide the cutting edge in what Marco Silva will surely see as a winnable encounter with Burnley.” – Mark

Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be veteran FPL manager Ruggles of Red Gap. He is now in his 11th season, with 2008/9’s finish of 1,572 his best to date.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last Gameweek’s champion Alfrankofredane drew 70-70 with the Scout Picks.

The current champion to beat is Boris Bodega, who achieved a 33 point margin of victory over us in Gameweek 15.

      Against palace, play Chambers right?

      A) Chambers - clean sheet & bonus potential.
      B) De Roon - unlikely attacking points.

          So I had a plan for 11 GW26 and 11 GW28 with no hits.

I'm going to stick with this in the main and just take one hit to get Aguero and keep the rest of the plan and just bench Aguero rather than Kane who I'll be taking out for him.

Hopefully no Spurs for a few weeks doesn't hurt too much.

            Morning all!

Chaos has ensued, spanners have been thrown into the works but we may have an early DGW which is great!

How many hits are you all looking at?

I've forgone my double up on Liverpool mids and may even get Funes Mori in for Coleman now. That would allow me to do Lukaku to Aguero next week if needed and then I can reverse the transfer the following week.

Would mean I get to keep Ibra but I'm not sure if that's worth getting Funes Mori in instead of Coleman and using an extra transfer?

Otherwise it's Ibra to Aguero and reverse that in GW29

I agree. Without the blank I'd be taking hits to get in three City players but without them I think the only real way to make the points back (potentially -4 in and -4 out) is with the captain which obviously can only be for one player.

I was thinking this about FM when you mentioned it last night.

I think you need to decide if you feel he is nalied. If he is, I think he's great value because he has got a few goals in him. He may not be as attacking as Coleman but I personally don't think he'll be too far behind if given the same game time. It's just, has he nailed down his spot? RK can be a nightmare for rotation.

Hard to say about Ibra. Doesn't feel like it's worth an extra transfer (essentially -4) and a compromise just for one game, but it's Ibra. I wouldn't like to ditch (and I won't be) as I'd want him after.

If you think that then I personally don't think he's too much of a downgrade.

He's maybe not as glamourous as Coleman but I think he will get a fair amount of attacking points.

              Hey Andy

I have 9 for 28 at the moment, but will have to lose Rondon for Kun and also probably move in Sane/Sterling for Alli, so I'm looking at maybe 8-9 in GW28, or 10 with a -4. Not too awful. Also have Pieters.

Was tempted to make another change to my team early this week, but now with the potential city DGW not worth it.

Massive spanner in the works, though! Think it'll cost me 8 points over 2 weeks, which isn't too bad, though!

That plan sounds good. At least now you'll get to have Ibra for GW27. Obviously wouldn't be your captain then now if City have a double, but nice to have regardless.

No hits for me. Assuming City get the double, I'm doing Sanchez to Sterling in GW27 and the Sterling to Mane in GW28. Then i'll get Sanchez and Sterling back in sometime after GW28. SOunds like a plan! (permitting there are no more spanners flying around)

1 or 2 hits. Problem with Aguero is lack of replacements (making it harder to get Sanchez back quickly) vs. alternative option you suggest in/out for lukaku uses an extra transfer.

Aye. Not sure if the extra transfer is needed. It would mean I'd need an extra hit in GW28 and I could still probably only field 10 players at most. That might be enough though

                Theoretically I could have 11 for GW28. I currently have 10 (Stanislas included). I could move Alli+Costa --> Sterling+Aguero next week for -4 and then in 28 go Sterling --> Lanzini/Siggy.

I don't like it because I will lose 0.5 on Costa and I would probably want him back for 29...

                This week. Pogba to Firmino.
Next week. Ibra and Mustafi to Aguero and ?????
                Week after: Hennessey to Jaku

No hits and provided Man City beat Huddersfield in the FA Cup replay (not a formality). That will give me at least 8 playing in GW28 and possibly 9 if I transfer Mustafi to a GW28 defender (possibly won't do this given the defensive fixtures don't look great that week).

GW28 I'll probably be taking a couple of hits as well, you really have to look at it as the baseline cost of -2 considering the big fat 0 pointer that would be a guarantee otherwise. Just the way I like to play this game I suppose.

This does make the Jesus injury (had him last two weeks) all the worse though, would have been brilliant!

Not for a hit I won't, and it'll have to be for a hit at this stage.

Nope. Would consider Arnie, but need to focus on GW28 players really. City seems like a more rewarding one week punt. Holding Grant though.

Hopefully he won't play in the cup, lessening that threat. Ideally, Pep would play his strongest teams in the league, but it's Pep, so you never know.

              How's this plan * = 1 blank ** = 2 blanks

              Jakupovic - Grant*
              Alonso* - Coleman - Baines - Brunt - Yoshida**
              Mane - Alli* - Eriksen* - Siggy - Stanislas
              Lukaku - Diomande - Ibra**

              This week: Diomande/Stanislas out
              27: Eriksen > KDB (C)
              28: KDB > Coutinho
              29: Mane > Sanchez
30 onward: buy only DGW players (I have no WC)

Morning fellas. How this possible plan to navigate weeks 27/28 looks for you:

              Foster
              Brunt, Baines, Alonso
              Phillips, Antonio, Sigurdsson, Mane, Clayton
              Lukaku, Kane

subs: Heaton --- Ibrahimovic*, Jones*, Holgate* --- 1 FT, 3.7 ITB

This week: Jones -> Robertson and play 4-4-2
              GW27: Kane -> Aguero
GW28: Holgate -> Coleman or other player who plays that week (field 10 players with no hits)

I would suggest you keep Kane at home v Everton in 27 and take out lukaku for aguero. Gw28 reverse that transfer, giving you your ten for 28

Thanks, that's also a possible route. However then I'd possibly have only 9 GW28 players assuming Holgate doesn't play and I don't get rid of him for a hit. But keeping Kane for 27 could definitely bring more points than one extra player on 28.

I was going to save Ibra for GW 27 and captain him.. But this (possible) City DGW makes is very difficult for me. I also have Carroll and Lukaku who are playing in GW 28, but I would obviously want Aguero in 27. I could sell Lukaku (playing Spurs away in 27) for Aguero and then bring Lukaku back again in 28, but I'd need a hit to be able to field 11 in GW 28. Perhaps it's better to sell Zlatan for Aguero and not taking a hit for 28? Feels terrible to sell before BOU at home though, but he would need to outscore Lukaku by +4 to make it worth it

I know, but what can I do besides hoping he will be fit? There's no one near his price range that appeals to me in the coming 3 GW's in a time where transfers are so precious.

Yeah that's a good point, although I do have Stanislas in there as well so might be just 9 players then. Was looking at Maguire in for Pieters in GW 28, but may just field 10 and hope Stanislas plays

              Team for GW26

              Jaku (BUR)
Alonso (SWA) Coleman (SUN) Baines (SUN) McAuley (BOU) Holebas (WHU)
Firmino (lei) Snodgrass (wat) Siggy (che)
              Lukaku (SUN) Rondon (BOU)

              Fletcher (BOU) Ibra* Sanchez*

              2FTs 2.0 ITB

GW27 Rondon and Sanchez to Aguero and Arnie
GW28 Aguero and Arnie to Mane and Niang (-4)

This would gove me 12 for GW26 and 2 DGWrs for GW27 and 10 for GW28. Niang could also be Wilson to give me 11 for GW28.

There is that, plus it's always good to have a decent bench. You never know when it will get called upon.

Only issue that I only have 0.1 give so Sanchez dropping 0.2 would scupper the plan. Getting in Arnie befroe the City Huddersfield game could be a risk

Surely this has to go down as one of the best FPL blanking weeks of all time. Plan A in place, then FA Cup upset throwing everything up in the air..Plan B in place, then possible early double gameweek batting it all back up again...Plan C...lovely

              *Heaton
              Alonso *Coleman Holgate *Smith
              Hazard Eriksen Alli *Phillips
              Costa *Lukaku

              (Pickford de Roon **Pieters Ibra)

              0 FT 1.2 ITB
I currently have 5x *BGW players (+ 'Holgate') and 1x **DGW player...
After much soul searching and deliberation I've conceived the plan below.
This gives me 3x DGW players and 8x BGW players at a cost of 4pts per week over the next 3wks.
Is this realistically the best I can do? Thoughts very much appreciated as always - cheers!

              26. Holgate > *Brunt (-4)
              27. Hazard & Costa > **Sané/Sterling & **Aguero (-4)
              28. Sané/Sterling & Alli/Eriksen > *Mané/Firmino & *Siggy (-4)
              29. Thinking possibly Aguero > Kane...

This DGW mania doesn't make scene to me.

Getting one City player in, if you are confident that you will get an extra game as captain out of him is fine, but beyond that most of you seem to wrecking your benches and future GW's plans for little to no potential gain.

City are now playing two games in DGW27 followed by a blank, eight other teams have two games over that same two GW period. The majority weren't prepared to bring a player in from one of those teams, for two games over GW27 and GW28, at the expense of a Chelsea, United or Arsenal player on the bench, so why are you now ?.

Have City players that haven't been popular on here for months suddenly become world beaters ? If not remember that for every City or Stoke player you bring in for DGW27, you are likely to be losing a starter in GW28 or two starters if you are bring them in for a player who has a game in GW28,

Agree with this. If you already have Sterling / Sane / Pieters / Grant etc then fair enough. I am only looking at bringing in Aguero to captain him.

Depends who you're bringing them in for and how well you're set up for gw28. I have 8 in place and plan to bring in Sterling and Kun for Eriksen and Kane gw27. Then Sterling to Liv mid gw28. 4 point hit to get 4 good City fixtures and Dgw capt rather than 2 tough Spurs fixtures (EVE x2)

              A) GW26: Sanchez -> Firmino
              GW27: Stanislas + Lukaku -> Siggy + Aguero (-4)

              B) GW26: Sanchez -> Mane

Assuming City get through in the cup, my GW 27 should look like:

              Jaku (Foster)
Alonso Brunt (1 of: Friend Yoshida Baines)
              KDB Hazard Firmino Sterling Siggy
              Ibra Lukaku (Barnes)

              for a -4....happy with that!

If City beat Huddersfield, it will mean 6 games in the first 19 days of March, two FA Cup, three PL and one CL. There will be 'scenes', at a level unseen before, if Pep benches Kun for the home game against Stoke ...

it's a risk for sure - but it can't be ignored. even Kun for 90+20mins is still probably the best 27 captain option.

Yes, that is the 100% key to this - extra/double captain game time during a single GW27 against Sunderland and Stoke. Everything else is just turbulence ...

Original plan was Benteke to Lukaku. 3rd forward is Llorente.

              A) Hold FT I can do Ibra to Aguero and Amat to Stones next week.

              B) Ibra to Lukaku, Benteke and Hazard to Sterling and Aguero (-4) next week

A means I miss out on Lukaku Sunderland.
B means I miss out on Ibra Bou and have Sterling -4 instead of Stones
