The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 27

While all the pre-deadline chatter centred around our confidence, or otherwise, in Sergio Aguero, it is ironic that, hours later, we’re left pondering the future prospects of two of our season’s most reliable heavy-hitters.

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been earmarked as an obvious target for the Gameweek 27 armband. Bournemouth’s visit to Old Trafford appeared to present a perfect scenario for the Swede: finally, he seemed poised to deliver that 15-20 point haul that would show that he could rival any asset for big “explosive” scores.

With the Cherries defence visibly shaken by United’s early forays, it appeared that Ibrahimovic would be given that opportunity. But, instead, he was to suffer his most torrid performance of the season, returning his lowest FPL tally.

To compound matters, an errant elbow into the cheek of Tyrone Mings seems likely to be reviewed and potentially punished by the FA. That could result in a three-match ban, ruling Ibrahimovic out of Gameweeks 29 and 30.

Already missing Gameweek 28 as a result of United’s FA Cup Quarter Final with Chelsea – another match he would miss should a charge and ban arrive – Ibrahimovic has already been sold more than any other asset since the passing of today’s deadline.

While he would certainly become an obvious target once United’s double Gameweek fixtures drop in place, up until that point, he now looks set to flood out of squads, declining in ownership and price.

Certainly, should Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane impress, along with Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa, in tomorrow’s matches, then a new front three template will likely form without Ibrahimovic.

It’s again ironic that Aguero saved legions of Fantasy Premier League managers from suffering the indignity of a doubling his -1 contribution. With the focus on skippering the City man, we had a new and obvious alternative for the captaincy.

Today’s outcome also created further doubt that, even in a double Gameweek scenario, Ibrahimovic could struggle to rival the promise of Aguero, Kane or Sanchez when it comes to dealing the Triple Captain chip.

But Sanchez produced his own shockwaves, having been ousted to the bench by Arsene Wenger for the evening trip to Liverpool.

While the Chilean impressed and produced an assist from the bench, Wenger’s almost inexplicable decision was unexpected and unwelcome.

Those who turned the back on the Aguero Triple Captain option, banking on the inevitable Sanchez double Gameweek to come, now have to consider that Giroud’s pitch time remains a factor. There will also be further speculation on the relationship between player and manager, while Arsenal’s erratic form and morale remains a concern.

No doubt targeted for an early return to our squads from Gameweek 29 onwards, tonight’s teamsheet and lacklustre first-half from the Gunners may just slow the clamour to return for Sanchez’s services.

Suddenly, with Ibrahimovic potentially out of the equation and confidence in Sanchez taking a knock, those Man City assets may just stick around longer than expected.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A) Sterling and Eriksen/Alli to Mane and Siggy (-4)

    B) As above but also Aguero to Llorente (-8)

I need to keep Aguero and Sanchez due to not being able to buy them back if I sell.

That leaves me with only being able to sell Capoue for a player playing next week.

I already have 3x Burnley, West Brom & Liverpool. So which is should I go for that's playing for 4.6? Currently toying with Routledge or Huddleston!

        Already done Sane -> Siggy
Amat to Mawson will follow for -4. Would only have 2 defenders otherwise so as long as Mawson plays should hopefully be only -2.
Then tempted by Sterling to Couts/Firm for another -4.

        Would leave me 11

        Heaton
        Coleman McAuley Mawson
        Mane Couts/Firm Siggy Davies Phillips
        Lukaku Carroll

You know when you make plans late at night...?

        Current squad:
        Grant. Jaku.
        Brunt. McAuley. Coleman. Baines. Ake.
        Sterling(vc). Eriksen. Mane. Siggy. Clayton.
        Kane. Lukaku. Aguero.

So just for fun I'm considering:
        Eriksen/Sterling/Clayton to Firmino/King/Wijnaldu.
(I think Pool are going to score big)
        Giving me this for GW28

        Jaku.
        Brunt. McAuley. Coleman. Baines
Firmino. Mane. Siggy . King. Wijnaldu.
        Lukaku.
        Bench. Grant. Aguero. Kane. Ale.

        11 players for a -8 to make a killing in GW28.
But a lot of quality for later weeks too...

        Madness???
Should I be considering a Westham mid instead?
        Or maybe just logging out?!

Regarding that hot topic about whether or not @FPL is spoonfeeding the masses, I can't believe we are 27 weeks into the season and people are still whining about it.

Over the first 10 weeks, I must admit I was one of those on the boards who b**ched and whined about @FPL and its spoonfeeding. I could tell it was having a particular impact on my ML as many managers were making identical moves to what the account was suggesting.

But I could understand the flipside of the argument, that @FPL is a necessary step to broaden the game's appeal as we move towards a world that is more digital and as brands seek to engage with its audience in a more organic, authentic way.

It took some time but I learned to use @FPL to my advantage - namely, being aware that alot of players moves will be "managed" by @FPL so to speak, and that knowledge in itself is gold. Over the past 10 weeks given the choppy nature of fixtures, I've adopted a more agile approach when it comes to differentials - especially since the "template" was getting more entrenched thanks to FPL. In fact, i've managed to jump from 400k to 55k in the last 5 GWs by taking some risks to go against the "template".

Surely by now, the experienced managers would have adapted and used such information to their benefit....

Apologies for the long post but felt it was fine to put this outside of the hot topic and maybe spur some discussion.

The info FPL puts out is good IMO. My question has always been does it reduce the value of FFS (not all of the value, but a part of it).

Telling people who are the best players to pick, how to play DGWs, when to use your WC and chips - a lot of that is strategy which I feel should be down to managers to work out - not spoonfed. Player and team data (and even more advanced data than they have) I completely understand providing though.

Thanks AZ. I went abit hit crazy in fact. I just knew I had to make swift moves rather than do it GW by GW. That way, I made the moves I wanted to make, fixed my team within a few GWs and prayed for the best.

I got Coleman, Kane and Lukaku in GW22 for (-8), rotating the (c) between them and Sanchez worked a treat. PVA, Mane and Jesus came in for a -8 as well in GW24, paid off pretty quickly. and in GW25 I brought Firmino in for triple LIV mids.

I must say though that I have riskily sold Ibra, Alonso and Costa in the process, and last week Sanchez too. Missed out on Alonso's brace but other than that i've been quite lucky on hindsight.

9 or 10 years ago FFS was a genuine differential. Few knew about it and no doubt the info/discussion helped win some mini-leagues. But that era was over long before this season. In retrospect it was sort of cheating, so changes are for the better imo.

What's funniest is people bemoaning the 'spoonfeeding' in general tweets, while asking for specific advice and opinion on their team.

Additionally, people just don't seem to realise that the official FPL site and Twitter feeds really don't reach that many people. The Twitter account follower count is less than 4% of the overall number of participants. And as for "Everyone is getting Sergio" this week - turned out to be 378k that bought him in - less than 9%.

It may affect some people's mini leagues where some players listen, but are those people really just keen to beat people that are clueless? How much of an advantage do you want, really?

Yup, it's not that big an audience and I think for those who actively engage and follow the account, at least they show interest and keep at it. I much rather have an ML that is active in GW27 rather than have 3 "in the know" people running away with it by GW27.

Even if it means the top guy in my ML has been constantly at the bottom for the past 3 seasons! :/

Yeah it's funny the bubble this site can create. I was fully prepared for Aguero to pop up throughout my mini league. Game updates....I was the ONLY one out of 30 to bring him in let alone triple captain him! Fairly competitive call league too.

The echo chamber effect of FFS was in full effect this past week.

I look at my mini league - which features some who read articles here, some who follow the FPL twitter feed and some who don't follow anything. I've one who won't get any players from teams he considers rivals to Arsenal.

The template simply doesn't exist in wider FPL management world this seaso. There are sterling captainers, aguero captainer, Ibra captainers this week. In fact Ibra was the most captained FPL wide. Some well stocked for GWK 28, some not. Some who have stuck by Costa all season, some who are more agile in the transfer market.

If my fairly typical mini league is anything to go by there really isn't anything near a template this season.

Well done on getting those diffs in - something I'm looking at doing post GWK 28 - yes, Leicester players I'm looking at you. 🙂

yea hence I use the word "template" quite loosely. I don't really see a strong template. I mean, the guys in most teams are Kane, Lukaku, Sanchez, Ibra, Alonso, Siggy, WBA defender, Heaton.

But c'mon, its pretty obvious to any one interested in BPL football that those guys need to be in your fantasy teams...can't really pin the blame on @FPL.

Well I can't take all the plaudits...haha. My rank was so crap I had to quickly conduct surgery on my team (36 point hits in 5 GWs :O) instead of doing it 1 FT by 1 FT as I would have in the past.

Like differentials? I've chopped and changed quite abit but notable punts include both Jesus hauls (rage sold Aguero), Coleman in early, Lukaku in and (c) for that haul, Kane in for Ibra, Mane in for Hazard post ACON, and now triple LIV mids as of last week.

But as I said, i've taken a risk...my team does not have Ibra Sanchez and Costa now.

I don't mind FPL doing it, actually it became pretty easy to get into top 10k if you are hanging out here every day. With masses getting some info now game become much harder, and for me much more interesting.

Ultimately the game is a competition and is heavily based around luck, whether we want to admit that or not.

The small 20-25% of control we do have over the game ultimately separates #1 from #4,000,000

That bit of control over the game comes in the form of transfer planning, reading into stats, looking at managers comments in press interviews, positional changes, value players, maximising the 100m budget and so on. In other words, things that increase the likelihood of getting points and decreasing the chance of losing/ missing points.

So all we've seen here is @FPL reaching out to a wide audience and lowering our odds of success in the game by spoonfeeding them with information they are too lazy to go and source themselves.

How many places higher would I be right now if the DGW wasn't advertised so extensively? How many differentials would have been kept on the down low if @FPL hadn't spewed out their existence.

It's very annoying for those that paid the membership on here in the summer when Mark full well knew he was going to be engaging in this project, only for us to dish out the cash for stats and have them nullified by the @FPL twitter account and literally cutting out the stats and spoonfeeding what players to have,

Sorry, but just how I feel about the whole thing.

I would be interested to know the actual membership income of this website and the income from other avenues i.e. promotion of gambling.

The move of content to FPL Twitter could have an impact on whether people sign up as a member on here. If they can get a satisfactory level of statistical information either through the Fantasy website, FPL Show or Twitter then maybe they will and maybe they wont sign up as a member.

But maybe this site doesn't really care about membership as long as the income from gambling promotion continues.

I agree with your last statement referring to membership.
As a on going fully paid member, I must admit when I watched Mark on FPL as a presenter and part of their team. It felt like being cheated on by a girlfriend (pardon the pun). The very reason I pay is to have an advantage over the rest, also to support and thank FFS. I really believe next season stats, info etc need to be limited or I might need to question my continual support financially.

To each there own I say.
There's more to succeeding at this game than just 'templating' but I do think a few more well though out Chips would spice things up.
The thrill of potentially failing is equal to the thrill of scoring big time. What I do appreciate (on ffs especially) is the supporting arguments for & against picking any particular player, template, differential etc. A casual needs a bit more luck if they're putting less thought into it the reasons behind selection.
I just hate the word 'essential', that's all.

I wrote a long reply to that "spoon-feeding" post and then deleted it. It would have ruffled some feathers and I couldn't be bothered. But what you have said was part of it.

The long and short of it is that the FPL content is mostly crap. It isn't "good advice", it's mostly as superficial as telling people which players scored a lot of points recently. The presenters are know-nothings who don't give a damn about their subject really. Mark lends the thing a shred of credibility but even his input is pretty simplistic, the format doesn't permit anything else.

If I can't beat managers that take advice from a source like that then I'm not as good as I think I am. And actually (as you say) it is of some help to know what the herd will be doing.

If I have any complaint (and I agree with BowstringTC about this) it is the way that FFS increasingly twitters information across the websphere as well as providing members data to FPL. But hey, it's a business, what should I expect? So, nowadays if I don't want something widely spread I don't post it here; that's why I offer fewer articles now and do most of my in-depth chat elsewhere. FFS was once a place for aficionados to share research and views but it has gone beyond that stage. One must therefore adapt. 🙂

good read there Ruth, I can definitely see where you're coming from. I for one would have loved to read your long form thoughts.

But I guess "what should I expect?" is pretty much how i've learned to deal with FFS and @FPL now. It's going to happen regardless and I think Mark's been very clear about that and he's trying to make himself and somehow FFS an integral part of the new direction.

Everyone can have an opinion, I feel a certain way about the content they dish out too...but given this is the first season they're doing this, maybe we'll see a more balanced approach next season as they learn and listen to their audience.

That's how a progressive brand should behave and let's hope FFS and FPL understand that. I would like to think Mark and the team do have a roadmap that for one reason or another, they cannot disclose at the moment.

While I don't often agree with you I will on your closing statement.

"FFS once was a place for aficionados to share research and views" and "that's why I offer fewer articles now and do most of my in-depth chat elsewhere".

                    Nail on the head.

I have seen some great writing on here by basically amateurs writers who are FPL enthusiasts. They go to great lengths to write some excellent content to be enter into a prize draw to win some £20 voucher (or something roughly to that level). Am I the only one who finds that level of remuneration patronising?

Personally speaking I don't know why community writers would produce content for this site to stand the chance of winning a £20 voucher when the information they are providing is the lifeblood of the parent site's business. In a weird way these community writers spoon-fed the information to this site which in turn is transformed into spoon-fed content for the FPL Twitter account.

Go elsewhere and collaborate with other like minded writers and thinkers and put your own stuff out in the commercial domain and try and make a few quid by way of competition to this site.

In all honesty I haven't seen a piece of writing on this website in along time, which wasn't community published, that made me go...wow good stuff.

Am I against the FPL Twitter or not? Probably I would say that I don't care.

I would say that I find the whole process of people providing community writing for this site, a commercial entity, baffling.

I'd like to think the community writers are producing articles for the community's benefit rather than for £20 and for that, we're all very grateful.

Their articles can be read by over 600,000 uniques a month on this site - building a site to achieve that size audience took me eight years of working almost relentlessly, parking my social life and probably contributing to me losing my previous eight-year relationship. I made big sacrifices to keep this going and get to where it is now.

Over that time I've not only had to produce and publish articles and develop the site, I've had to learn how to form, maintain and grow a business. Not what I set out to do, but necessary to keep running the site and to justify the time I have to put into it - there came a point where 5-6 hours of my time a day had to get me something back - I admire anyone who can produce a rival site and get to that point without having to generate income.

Creating a blog and getting some page views is easy and, yes, I'm sure any of the community writers can do that. Some already have. It's going beyond a blog with three or four posts a week that is very very difficult, particularly now that there are already 50+ sites also doing it.

Creating a site and getting it to this size, maintaining it when server costs hit four figures a month and you need full-time staff to keep it going - unless I've been doing it wrong, is bloody tough.

Some heavy, personal stuff there Mark.

But yeah I agree with you, people contribute articles for the love of the hobby rather than for any real 'remuneration'. If they were serious about having this pay a few quid then they'd be elsewhere, doing there own thing...

Well it harks back to the four years I spent producing articles that built FFS.

I invested the time and got absolutely nothing financially back for it - not even a £20 quid voucher. But, like the community writers, I did it because I enjoyed it and enjoyed helping folk out with my research. I never saw it getting to this point and that wasn't the motivation back then.

FFS didn't happen overnight. I know a lot of folk have been around since the days when this was just a blog with one post a day at best and a few hundred comments. FFS was built on the same attitude that urges the community writers to contribute now. It couldn't continue that way because it got too big and needed too much of my time. I didn't intend it to be my job and my source of income.

Imitation is a form of flattery. It's so easy to copy what you have created but surely no one can understand the sacrifices and the vision that you have Mark. I agree that to fund the growth of FFS you need to expand ... similar to companies that want growth you need to make acquisitions. If you are happy being Celtic with no competition similar to casuals not having insight then good luck. I prefer to test myself against those who have all cards available. My God... I think the membership is £12 per season.... put that into perspective and you have a bargain. If you don't agree then don't renew . It's suppose to be fun. Enjoy the banter, wisdom, comps and the scoutcasts . I spent £17 on the Haye fight and it's gone. FFS is like your loyal dog.. always there always happy to see you .. even though you give it a sly Ibra elbow now and again.

I'm not disputing the work involved in creating a website, and growing said website. Fair play to you on the move to FPL by the way and this site generally. You get paid I'm sure decent money to do something you are passionate about. And you work hard to get it to where it is today, so well done on that. My OP was not intended as a personal go at you so hopefully you haven't taken it that way.

What I will dispute is this sense of "doing it for the community". That baby went out with the bath water for me. This is a commercial entity, that you make your living out of. For me anyway this notion of community is a fanciful idea. Fine to write community piece, in my opinion, for a hive of like minded users on a not for profit forum. But when the content is being championed on a website on this size and income level's the £20 on offer for the lucky name out of that hat just doesn't sit well with me.

But again that's just my personal thoughts on the whole thing. Maybe you care about such feedback, maybe you don't.

We provided the community section to allow the community to produce some articles and get them published to a wider audience, not as a means of ripping anyone off.

We publish about 2-3 a week so it's not like we rely on them as the main source of our material - we've been very careful about that - instead, we work with the writer to edit and publish them to compliment our own articles.

When a community writer has their work promoted outside of the community section, we also pay them for the article and we've used community contributions to try out new writers with a view to taking them on as staff.

I still think the Community section is a "healthy thing" and we will keep it going while folk want to contribute. If they stop, we'll stop. It would be a shame but it's a complimentary voice, not the only voice.

I get what you're saying about this being a commercial venture now - I don't hide that and I've explained why that has to be the case, but equally not everything that goes into FFS is or has to be motivated by a dollar sign.

I honestly don't think like that and sink more time than I have to, or perhaps need to, into it, despite it being a source of income. It's still a passion and I enjoy it and I think those who contribute their time without renumeration think the same.

As a new community writer I enjoy contributing, I certainly don't feel exploited. I really appreciate the editing work Jonty does to get the article sounding much better - I am not a writer by any means.

I've found the act of writing the articles helps me. I look deeper and discover new things, things I wouldn't have considered if I hadn't put the time and effort in to write an article. I'm not great at general chit-chat but I really appreciate what the site gives me - articles, stats, comments from other users - I've felt for a long time I want to give something back and contribute, the articles provide a good opportunity.

Also as someone who has started a small business I appreciate the love and effort people put in to start a business. I can only imagine the work that has gone into getting this site where it is today.

Nevermind. I think I've got the far end of the stick & you mean promoted as in elevated to the main portion of the site like Ben Crellin's dgw posts this time round? Not promoted as in advertised elsewhere.

I've got to say though, I agree wholeheartedly with Hibbo's post. As long as there is content in the community section that hosts gambling ads and the likes then its de facto working for free for Fantasy Football Scout Ltd. If you can't justify paying every writer for their effort then have a tighter filter on what makes the grade and pay out on articles you think make the grade as quality content. Having free content on a commercial site is straight out of the HuffPost playbook and its grim.

I think we need to assume everyone playing the game has access to the same information and then we take it from there. It's a competitive world and as the game gets more competitive your change/improve, that's a factor of life. Mark or FFS is not reason for anyone dip this season, the game just got more competitive.

As much as I like this site, my main gripe is I feel it's not quite staying ahead of the 'spoon feeding' FPL.

The members section needs to develop a bit with regards to stats. Where is xG data? Opta now calculate this themselves and it's largely accepted as the best predictor of future performance. Is it cost? Is there a desire to provide xG data in the future on this site?

The game has always been about picking the right players, a bit of planning and a lot of luck. Some make out that it is more complicated than that, but it really isn't. That doesn't mean it's easy to win as there are so many variables given the nature of football.

The advice on here has always been variable, but more people have made an effort to get access to it.

Perhaps more people are doing money leagues and want to beat their friends using any advantage they can, rather than playing for a month or so and giving up if they were having a bad season, which in turn makes the game more competitive for everyone.

I feel majority of this spoonfeeding nonsense is coming from players who were used to high ranks & winning ML's by beating players with little knowledge of the game!
Now that there's a lot of tips & advice out there they're bitter they're not doing so well, or others around them also doing well!
Get over it!!! it's more fun playing against people who have knowledge & losing than beating someone who has no idea what they're doing

I really don't understand what the issue is. I really, really don't.

Dare I say that those moaning their rivals are now keeping pace with them or beating them are perhaps not as good at this game as they thought they were.

                Morning all. I'm ignoring yesterday as got a woeful 11points (-8) although do have Carrolls points off bench. Today the day hopefully (Kun TC), my team for Gw28 as it stands;

                Heaton
                Coleman Robertson A.Smith
                Sterling Siggy Carroll Phillips
                Lukaku Aguero Kane
                Subs: Jaku, Alonso, Sanchez Chambers

Gives me 8 if Phillips plays. Should I do any of these later?

                A) Kun + Sterling > Llorente + Mane (-4)

                B) Kun + Sterling + Phillips (if out) > Llorente + Mane + Firm/Cout (-8)

I have the same problems. I think I'm being clever with my moves but they seem to backfire. Whereas my ML rivals take massive hits for average players and it seems to pay off.

Aguero (TC) Today though so hoping it works out but sceptical.

Running a $100 cash league with 48 players, and only 7 ate now ghostships with the top 12 all in top 150k.

Only 3 of the top ten bought in Aguero. Two guys TCed Sterling. Two have Kolarov. Four have no City whatsoever. One guy captained Mane and two captained Kane.

So please stop spoonfeeding the casuals FFS, as they are all picking template games and making it boring.

Not at all, if you ain't feeling it, then you ain't feeling it. I'm doing either Ibra/Aguero to Lloriente, to give me 10 players but only because I'm looking to structure my team with 1 cheap striker & he fits the bill for a few weeks (then Gabbi) so it suits. I did consider Alli to Firminho but I don't really want 2 Liverpool mids going forward so pulled the plug on that idea even though it might benefit short term.

If average team isn't prepared 28 could effectively be like a (low scoring?) dgw. I'd get as many as possible, but not fodder just for sake of it.

No. That's what I'm planning on doing.

At the moment I have 9 potential starters, but doubts on 3 of them; Heaton, Phillips and Carroll.

Even if none of those 3 start next week I really don't see myself wasting a transfer to get in someone for GW28 that I won't want afterwards and probably won't score me many points.

I'd rather save 2 FTs for GW29 to get Kane back.

I want to get rid of Phillips. King is a good option this week, but he's fixtures after that are crap.

Markovic fixtures are good but not hasn't shown any form.

If I lose Phillips likely for Carroll. New cheap 5th I can bench and leaves more £ for other mids.
Feel that 28 is tempting into wouldn't-otherwise-consider players that then have to sell again, but a personal thing.

If Alder & Vert are out that's unlikely.

Guys when do you think we will found out if Ibrahimovic gets a 3 match ban? I will have to take him out over Aguero if he's banned and money is tight..

                        Cheers.

                        A) Mane Sanch Siggy Sterl + kane in front
                        Or
                        B) Mane Sanch siggy sterl erik/alli and no kane

So I 'd planned Sterling -> Siggy this week to get 11 out, but should I be getting King instead? Also on pens, in form, 2 decent fixtures, not opposing 2 of my defenders this week & the extra cash gives these options in GW29:

                        a) Mane -> Sanchez, or
                        b) Firmino & Kun -> Sanchez & Kane (-4)

If going with Siggy then it's trickier to get Sanchez & Kane in the short term.

So I guess my question is, KING or SIGGY?

                        Jaku
                        Baines, F Mori, Brunt, Robertson
                        Mane, Firmino, Snoddy
                        Lukaku, Barnes

                        Grant, Stones, Eriksen, Sterling, Aguero
                        Bank 0.0m, 1FT

Went into yesterday 20 pts off ML rival.. 27 pts from 3 players for me, rival got 3pts from 5.. still have Aguero (C) to play which rival doesn't, yesterday was a good day

                        Any more opinions?

                        Current squad:
                        Grant. Jaku.
                        Brunt. McAuley. Coleman. Baines. Ake.
                        Sterling(vc). Eriksen. Mane. Siggy. Clayton.
                        Kane. Lukaku. Aguero.

So just for fun I'm considering:
                        Eriksen/Sterling/Clayton to Firmino/King/Wijnaldu.
(I think Pool are going to score big)

                        Giving me this for GW28
                        Jaku.
                        Brunt. McAuley. Coleman. Baines
Firmino. Mane. Siggy . King. Wijnaldu.
                        Lukaku.
                        Bench. Grant. Aguero. Kane. Ale.

                        11 players for a -8 to make a killing in GW28.
But a lot of quality for later weeks too...

                        Madness???
Should I be considering a Westham mid instead?
                        Or maybe just logging out?!
