The Stock Check – Gameweek 27 – Wednesday

Raheem Sterling is handed the night off, while Sergio Aguero disappoints as double Gameweek 27 fails to live up to the hype. A goalless draw at the Etihad means that defences prevail over the pair of fixtures as Manchester City and Stoke deliver the unexpected and bring in two clean sheets apiece.

On the Rise

Aleksandar Kolarov
While John Stones dropped to the bench this evening, Kolarov once again retained his spot in the heart of Pep Guardiola’s back-four – an eighteenth start in their last 19 league matches.

Back-to-back clean sheets over the double – City now have four in their last five – was supplemented with maximum bonus away to Sunderland to ensure that the Serbian ended double Gameweek 27 with a 15-point return, joint-top for the Etihad side.

With City set for another double further down the line, Kolarov may yet have a part to play in our seasons once the schedule turns kinder in Gameweek 32.

Lee Grant, Eric Pieters
Stoke’s budget stopper came up trumps once again to deliver 13 points for his 8.9% owners.

City’s poor performance meant that Grant needed to make just a single save on his way to earning a third clean sheet in his last four appearances.

Since being handed a first start in Gameweek 6, Grant’s average of 4.2 points per match is more than any Potters player and not far off Burnley’s Tom Heaton (4.5) between the posts.

As for Pieters, he claimed two bonus points from last night’s stalemate and has now gathered additional points in three of his last six, amassing six bonus points over that spell. Owned by 8.2%, the Dutchman is by far the most popular option in Mark Hughes’ rearguard, though his appeal is clearly limited by the Grant option.

Stoke may have a blank next weekend, but the following schedule is in their favour, with clashes against six of the bottom ten in their subsequent eight from Gameweek 29 onwards.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
Much was expected of both City and their star striker – they had scored five in each of their last two at the Etihad and found the net in every home league match under Guardiola.

Subject to a major bandwagon for the double, Aguero convinced almost 160,000 FPL managers to wield their Triple Captain chip but ultimately managed just one goal and nine points for his pair of fixtures.

Wednesday’s blank means it’s just two goals in his last ten Gameweek appearances for Aguero, with City now sitting out Gameweek 28 prior to clashes against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Over 40,000 managers have already parted company this week and the drift towards Harry Kane – who has 12 goals in ten, by comparison – is likely to accelerate once we navigate the weekend blank.

Raheem Sterling
The second most bought player for the double Gameweek, Sterling fell victim to Guardiola’s rotation as he was handed the night off against the Potters.

To an extent, Pep had a point – Sterling had started more league matches than any team-mate prior to tonight, yet that’s no consolation for his 17.3% FPL owners, who ended the Gameweek with six points.

An assist for Aguero’s opener at Sunderland means the winger has produced points in nine of his last 11 league appearances, but in spite of that consistency, the City teamsheet served a reminder that we cannot hope to second-guess their manager.

Sterling has already been sold by 50,000+ FPL managers this week, as Guardiola’s tinkering has us thinking twice over retraining their pricey assets

Peter Crouch
A run of ten straight league starts came to an end on Wednesday after the Potters’ target man dropped to the bench to accommodate new boy Saido Berahino.

It was on the cards. Crouch had managed 90 minutes in just one of his previous four as Hughes looked to initially utilise the former West Brom man off the bench late on.

With Berahino’s match fitness now up to scratch, Crouch’s appeal as a
valid budget third striker now looks somewhat limited – with a blank Gameweek 28 preceding a clash with Chelsea, his 6% owners may look to bail soon.

Davies (eve) & Aguero > Firmino & Lukaku?

Smooth of Pieters, King, Mane, avoiding Ibra(C).
Rough the obvious Kun(TC) although it did win me a crucial head-to-head against second place so sort of worth it 🙂

You'd have captained a City player anyway so the TC blocked nothing. You just got a poorish result with it is all.

Only brought in Aguero/mids for TC/all-in. Not sure I would have captained a mci mid otherwise. But a poorish result regardless.

Not too much to complain about other than Kun TC, but that'll be common.

Less than 12 pts from a TC = Fail

You'd have brought him in and captained anyway. Chip got you only 9pts not 18 as some people calculated it which is a fail for a DGW. A single goal in a SGW can match that.

Adjusted in the case of an otherwise-Ibra captain might not turn out too bad at all.

When people score about 2000 points in a wholeseason, your TC being a few points below average really doesn't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things.

            Prior to the dgw announcement I had planned;

Smooth: 87 pointer with a 100k rankings jump. Sane in for crocked Stanislas, Pieters and Mane delivering and team is looking in decent shape for GW 28 with 7 playing and Holgate.

Rough: TC fail with Aguero giving same points as Costa but not too rough. Rondon still stinking up my team and really want to move him on but will wait for a week more.

            Costa (9) Hazard (11) > Aguero (27) Sterling (6) (-4)
            and as an afterthought...
            Alli (12) > Sane (12) (-4)

Frustrating times...don't regret Aguero TC - my main ML rival didn't even buy him this week (he saved a transfer and just went with Sterling(c) only) and it was just too good an opportunity not to take knowing I can still cover his TC later in the season.

I do regret taking Alli out instead of Eriksen though...actually should have just kept both.

Smooth - just Pieters, and that hurts anyway....

I did Lukaku to Kun for a hit as my only DGW coverage, and gained 9 points from the transfer.

Ibra (C) and Lukaku would have scored 4 points
Kun (C) and Ibra scored 17 points

Smooth: Sane, Kane, Mane, all attacking players delivering points giving me 83 points (-4).
Rough: Defense full of 1 pointers, TC Aguero was underwhelming. The biggest rough was watching City play astonishingly bad while I could have watched Barca provide the match of the decade.

Smooth— 78(-4), Kane and Mané both doing well, van Aanholt coming off the bench with a clean sheet. Third consecutive green arrow.

Rough— van Aanholt injured, Heaton was out, Sterling only played one game.

            Rooth— Triple Captained Agüero.

Picked Kolarov and Arnie this week, didn't put either of them in. Hedged by bets with the SAS, took Sanchez, Costa and Philips out, benched Josh King. Played 4 big guns in defence, Coleman, Alonso, Brunt, Walker (for 5 points).

Rough; Selling Kane and Hazard to get in Aguero(TC) and Sterling for a hit, Sterling missing the second game, Ibra missing a pen, loads of 1 and 2 pointers!

Smooth; Firmino, Aguero (TC) of 27 not a total disaster, avoiding Ibra(c) had we of not had the DGW.

All out on 59(-4), 10 points up on what I would have scored but take off the hit and I've gained a mighty 6 points!!

At least the triple captain is dealt with and put to bed.

Rough: Alli & Kane > Sterling & Agüero, TC Kun disappointment.

Smooth: 101 (-8) and moving into top 1k, Jesus > Llorente turned out better than expected, Mané and Firmino show, Grant with 2 clean sheets, PVA and Lukaku with their 6 pointers.

Rough: Kane + Mane to Aguero + Sane (Only way I could afford a City mid). WBA players (Phillips, Brunt, Nyom)

Smooth: 82(-4) without TC played. Costa, Firm, Alli, Lukaku, Valencia and City players all brought home points.

Smooth - Sane move from last week paid off. Pieters.

Rough - Did Costa to Aguero triple captain. A sad end to my FPL relationship with Aguero as I won't want him again this season and he likely won't be here next season.

Then took an 8 point hit to do Stanislas to Sterling funded by Luiz to Naughton for the exact money. I thought the Naughton move was effectivley a minus 2 as he would play in wk28, but he is now injured. Sterling then benched for the 2nd game. Ruddy shambles!

Rough: Sterling no show last night. Ibra. Defence and GK net 6. Alli->Siggy. Sanchez on bench.

Net 36 points. Disastrous. Surprised I'm still in top 100k after that.

Rough: Went against my instinct to do Kane (C) to Aguero (C) for a hit. Also did Ake > Mawson for a hit instead of playing T. Carroll. Cost me 21 points.

Smooth: Trusted enough of my instinct to not TC Aguero. He's already out of my squad for another hit. Back to Kane 🙂

            Rough
Alli, Kane, Hazard, Phillips out for
Sterling, Aguero (TC), Sane, Coutinho in (-12)

About a 30 point loss considering the triple captaincy wasted and the hit as well.

No regrets, I'd do it all over again -- my only hope now is that people overreact to the City failure last night and say "never again" to loading up on DGWs. If you play the long game with doubles and blanks you will get paid off.

I'll ignore the smooth and head straight for the complaint department.

Paid 8 points to get Sane, Sterling and Kun(TC).
            Out? Alli, Zaha and Lukaku.

Not even gonna bother checking if Zaha got baps or do the math on this travesty of transfers.

Paid another 4 points to get Lukaku back in now, in disgust.

Posted this on the last article... Current team below, planning on bringing in Lorente for Aguero. For a -4 would you rather:

          a) Sterling > Coutinho/Firmino
          b) Pieters/ Chambers > Coleman

          HEATON
          MCAULEY/ (HOLGATE)/ Pieters/ Chambers/ Alonso
          FLETCHER/ MANE/ ANTONIO/ SIGGY/ Sterling
          LUKAKA(c)/ LORENTE/ Kane

If I were you I'd shift out Holgate for a playing defender for essentially a -2

Don't fancy Sterling's next 3 fixtures. I'm actually leaning towards a -8 and getting Coleman and one of Firm/ Cout. Would need a goal/ assist/ clean sheet for it to pay off and will look better long term

Heading into the weekend with this lot, pretty pleased (I think):

            Jaku
            McAuley Brunt Coleman Olsson
            Mane Snodgrass Davies Sigurdsson
            Llorente Lukaku

            Heaton Alonso Eriksen Kane

            0 FT, 4.1m ITB

            Couple of dilemmas...

            GK

            A. Jaku
            B. Heaton

            Captain

            1. Lukaku

Despite my own advice I fell into the double game week trap, with mixed results:

                Rough: Sold Hazard, Costa, Mané
                Rough: TC Aguero
                Rough: -16 hit
                Rough: Bought Coutinho

                Smooth: Bought Kolarov and Grant

More rough than smooth I think, but having such a bad season, got nothing to play for!

                  Smooth..Avoided Ibra Capt
                  Smooth..Held onto Mane & Alli

Got Aguero in for Defoe & TC'ed him...I guess only after the other DGW's & TC options have played will we know if that was rough or smooth. (feels rough right now).

Ah for sure, there is no guarantee any of the big hitters will be 100% fit etc etc for their potential DGWs, so many variants and things that can screw things up. The stars aligned for the last weekend, just didn't quite shine - 27 points is very disappointing all things considered, but it's still 27 points!

I'm on 1502, need to make up 83 points on ML leader. He's generally making good decisions but slipped a bit this week and has not prepared for GW28. Thinking it's gonna go down to the wire

Nice score, i'm 25 behind you with 10 this GW.

83 is a big ask, but possible imo, good luck! A great TC pick and bench boost could really make a huge diference here - I just failed with Aguero TC.

30 points clear in mini league, back uo to 100k overall, with 10 playing this week (-8) Closest rivals all have 7 playing before an potential transfers, none have a FT.

                  Heaton
                  Baines Coleman
Firmino Mane (C) Snodd Morrison Siggy
                  Lukaku Llorente

Grant - Alonso Aguero Pieters PVA

Looking to extend my lead by 10-20 pts

                  Aguero to Kane for GW29

Joke aside, you'll need Kane as you already noticed.

                    Nice team for this week.

Haha, it's a super tight top 5, with top place changing hands constantly - 70 points from 1-6th. I thinkl two of them will make 2 changes for -4, the other hardly makes any transfers but always stays in top 3!

Baines, Llorente and Firmino are my -8, and barring injury or severe form loss, will all stay til the end now due to fixtures, Baines' tough ones are manageable.

Just done a quick check of the players I ditched for hits for the DGW madness

                  Out - 12pts of hits
Love, Sanchez, Defoe, Philips - TOTAL 6pts

                  In
Aguero, Sane, Sterling, Mawson - TOTAL 16pts after 12pt hit.

So 10 pts up overall. Not too shabby.

And that ignores Captain. I don't know if I would or wouldn't of captained Kane instead.

Is it worth holding on to Sterling when lots seem to be ditching? He's quite cheap, has been scoring points when he plays, and Pep will surely not drop/rest him again after last nights shocking performance from Navas - plus he still has a double game week coming up. I know next fixtures look tough on paper but Liverpool can't keep clean sheets, Arsenal are in a bit of turmoil and Chelsea haven't been as great defensively as before

I'm holding on to him, Mr Consistent. And like you I only see one hard fixture and that's Chelsea away. City will score at least one against Arsenal and 'Pool I think

It's so up in the air with them, a minefield i know I shouldn't cross again but will!! Scoring at least one agaisnt pool and arse is still kind of wishful thinking, they couldn't score against a stoke team that had conceded 17 in their last 6 away games!!

Having felt the impacts of hits last week, should I be discouraged from taking more this week? Would have been top of my ML had I not made any transfers 😆

I have Amat and Marney which could be Mawson and Lanzini, but not sure a -8 is warranted?

-8 last week too and already on -4, so this would be -12 in totality!

You'll get back half of your hit on Amat unless Swansea get thrashed, that one probably worth it just to shift him.

The other one depends on your plans going forward, whether you need the cash etc. If you fancy Lanzini for a few weeks and will play him I would think it could pay

Yeh also worried that Amat will drop - 0.1m of precious WC funds!

I will need the funds to get Sanchez back, but will likely be ditching Lukaku for Gabbi in GW 31 and then can downgrade Phillips to bench fodder as their fixtures fall off a cliff.

Hi all, can I get some advice? I have spent -4 on transfers and have 8 players for this week. Main rival has 10 and has spent -8.

                        Should I:

                        A - Switch Benteke to Carroll (-8)
                        B - Switch Sterling to Lanzini (-8)
                        C - Stick (-4)

Which is the most nailed on Liverpool defender par Clyne. Want to get one for their great run in, even City away is a potential CS with their focus shifting to Champions League.

Cou is great but as I see it he's not in his best form yet so now it's Firmino imo.

I've gambled on Cout instead of Firmino for this week.

Over the last 2 games he's been heavily involved and looked good but the points just aren't there yet. I'd go Coutinho.

I've been stumping for Coutinho all week - he's been firing in the shots, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he pulls in double digits against Burnley.

Do you already have Mane? As he would probably be my LIV mid of choice.

Coutinho is more fun to own, more involved and lower ownership in the top 10K. Points will come his way.

                          I'd go Cout over Firm

He hasn't scored in ages, I went for Firmino and Wijnaldum istead, also have Mane.
