Captain Poll – Gameweek 29

Following the weekend’s curtailed schedule, our Captain Poll is back with a full set of fixtures and far larger talent pool.

Arsenal’s Saturday lunchtime trip to West Brom, a side that has shipped eight goals in four and last kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 24, ensures that the Gunners’ assets could overcome their own indifferent form to challenge for the armband.

Alexis Sanchez (11.5), who scored in the weekend FA Cup win against Lincoln City, is likely to attract interest for the Hawthorns clash, given that no other player can match the Chilean’s 11 goals on the road this term.

An alternative captaincy option among Arsene Wenger’s troops is Theo Walcott (7.3). Owned by a mere 4.1% of FPL managers, he’s now scored in three of his last four starts in all competitions and could be a vital player for Arsene Wenger over the run-in.

Another is Olivier Giroud (8.1), whose goal against Lincoln may have done enough to cement a spot in the first XI, having also started two of Arsenal’s last three league matches. With West Brom’s potent threat from set-pieces, Giroud’s physicality may well see him considered for the start.

Elsewhere in north London, Spurs also offer a raft of potential captaincy candidates, although they seem likely to be without top scorer Harry Kane for Southampton’s visit. The England forward is expected to be sidelined having falling victim to an ankle injury in Spurs’ 6-0 rout of Millwall in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Son Heung-min (6.8) is a potentially explosive differential captaincy candidate and was the most productive Spurs asset when Kane was previously absent through injury, between Gameweeks 6 to 10. Over that period, the South Korean scored twice and provided an assist.

Dele Alli (8.7) is another who will be tasked with filling the void left by Kane, having also scored twice during the striker’s last spell of absence. The midfielder has netted 10 goals over his last 11 Gameweeks and, with 23,000 transfers in, is already one of the week’s most sought-after assets.

Although he delivered just a single assist with Kane out of the picture last time out, Christian Eriksen’s (8.6) eight double-digit hauls, 13 assists and five goals in the league suggests he will also be considered by some for Southampton’s visit. The Dane scored the opener and claimed two assists having been introduced for Kane in Sunday’s victory.

Last week’s poll winner and most popular FPL asset, Romelu Lukaku (10.3), will not easily surrender top billing – particularly with Hull City next up at Goodison Park in Gameweek 29. Lukaku will greet Marco Silva’s side on the back of a goal, assist and maximum bonus return against West Brom on Saturday.

That strike against the Baggies brought his home tally to 11, a record only bettered by Kane’s 14; Lukaku has now scored in five consecutive home matches.

Given that Silva’s men have shipped seven goals and failed to keep a clean sheet over their last four matches, the Belgian’s army of owners will be expecting further returns come Saturday’s clash.

A trip to Stoke City should ensure that Chelsea players, particularly the 34.5% owned Diego Costa (10.5), will challenge the Toffees’ striker.

Costa’s strike away to West Ham in his last league run out was a 17th of 2016/17, putting him just two behind Kane and Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot. However, he has still produced just three double-figure hauls all season, with 12 points his highest tally thus far.

Eden Hazard (10.2) has been more explosive and also netted against the Hammers, but with just three of his 11 goals arriving on the road, it will be interesting to see if he can keep pace in our poll.

Pedro (7.1) is another form option in Antonio Conte’s squad. The winger has accrued seven goals and provided eight assists this season and has also registered returns three successive Gameweeks, while scoring or assisting in his last three away starts.

However, Stoke’s strong recent home record, which has seen them concede just twice and keep two clean sheets in four bet365 Stadium ties, may restrict Conte’s charges and limit their appeal for the captaincy.

Liverpool’s visit to Manchester City looks tough to call and is expected to create further doubts over the merits of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield assets. Both Sadio Mane (9.7) and Philippe Coutinho (8.3) blanked in Sunday’s stuttering 2-1 win over Burnley, with the latter hauled off before the hour mark. Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino (8.5) missed out through injury and remains a doubt heading into the Etihad Stadium meeting.

With four clean sheets in their last five league outings, there is also a suggestion that Pep Guardiola’s defence may have the form to repel the Liverpool attack.

In contrast, with Klopp’s side keeping just a single clean sheet since Gameweek 19, City’s three-man forward line could earn interest.

Owners of Leroy Sane (7.5), Sergio Aguero (12.7) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) may yet shake off the disappointment of Gameweek 27 to back them ahead of the Liverpool meeting.

Among the differential options on offer is Gameweek 28’s top scorer Josh King (5.6). The Cherries midfielder’s hat-trick against West Ham will see him brimming with confidence ahead of a collision with the Swansea City defence. Paul Clement’s rearguard has mustered just one shutout and shipped 17 goals in his nine-match tenure.

Already since Saturday, more than 51,000 FPL managers have secured the Norwegian’s services.

Leicester City’s renaissance under new boss Craig Shakespeare offers up Jamie Vardy (9.6) as another enticing punt.

Owned by just 8% of FPL managers, the England striker has struck twice and assisted another under the new regime and visits a West Ham defence that has shipped 13 goals over their last six outings. Indeed, Slaven Bilic’s defence have just one clean sheet since Gameweek 18, while the Foxes have scored three goals in each of their matches under Shakespeare’s stewardship.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Morning all!
A)I think it's better to make a transfer and especially take a hit for a heavy name after the international break.
B)As a Mane+Coutinho owner and the thoughts of selling one of them i am thinking that either Liverpool get a result against Man city either not doesn't really matters cause of the international break. The game that matters is against Everton. If Liverpool wins that game with the fixtures they have after then for sure i will want both Mane+Coutinho in my team.
C)Even if someone want to take a heavy name before the international break then I believe Hazard(even if someone have Costa) and Alli(even if someone have Eriksen or the opposite) for now its a better pick from Sanchez with all this happening with Wenger but also with the other players
    Any thoughts?

Son should be a sure starter given the fact that Pochetino doesn't rate Jansen. Only chance of Jansen starting in Kane's absence is him coming off the bench and scoring a hatty in some game.

What would you choose (probably next week):

    Sanchez, Mane, Siggy, Lanizni, Fletch
    Costa, Lukaku, Llorente

    a) Fletcher > Eriksen (3-5-2) (and Llorente > Barnes)
    b) Llorente > Gabbiadini (3-4-3)

Very smooth for me...best GWK rank of the season thanks to new recruits Lukaku (c) and Josh King.

      64 (-8)

Sadly Coutinho failed to deliver for the second of my two hits.

Managed a full XI thanks to some smooth planning over the last month.

Now comes the rough as I try and ditch three WBA players. 😉

      Brunt/RFM/Llorente 1pters.

      Smooth: Randolph saving a penalty.
Last min Siggy assist nabbing 2 bonus
52-4 overall not too bad, but now need to take some risks to rebalance after having ten men in 28, with the majority of my ML ignoring the GW to some extent and still doing OK through having Kaku (c).

Smooth - Green arrow for the 3rd consecutive week. Much needed because my season went downhill since Christmas (thanks to Aguero).

Smooth: 11 players all started, scored 82 (-8). Brought in King on Saturday morning. Late Mawson goal justified bringing him in last week to get Aguero. Jumped from over 200K to 88K.

      Rough.
      Took a -12 hit for a 3 point return..
Robertson, Coutinho, Llorente in for Amat, Phillips, Aguero.

      More Rough.
Funes Mori, Brunt, Snodgrass only started on the bench and all came on for a 1pt return..
Got these guys in weeks ago with this GW in mind..

      Smooth.
      Lukaku (c).

Still a hefty fall in ranking even though I had been very confident before the GW began.

Considering that the blanks still ended up catching quite a few of my mini league rivals by surprise, I'm fairly satisfied.

A smooth gameweek rank of around 50k, with Lukaku, Barkley and Gylfi/Mawson as headlining.
Rough transfer gamble, including three hits (-12), with neither Mané, Coutinho nor Llorente performing. I could have been 8 points better off had I not done those transfer, but I'm wildcarding this week so it's not that bad.

All things considered I feel more confident going forwards as my main rivals have used their wildcard pre-gw28. I believe that I can put out a much strong side in the weeks to come now.

Played my Wildcard after the firminio and phillips news. It left me with 6 players and a -4 having already made my changes early.

70 point return from the wildcard.

Mawson Lukaku king robles Antonio all came in and delivered.

I already had siggy and mane as captain let me down.

      Rank went from 240 to 104 k

      Smooth:

Brought in Siggy, Lukaku(c) and Coleman (37pts) for Sterling, Kun and Pieters (0pts). 29pts gain after hits.
Ashley Barnes 8pts. I wasn't even sure he was going to start 🙂

      Rough:

No much, Brunt not starting, but was expecting 1pt of him anyway.
Mane and Coutinho blanks but I've had Coutinho for a while and Mane still better than Sanchez this week.
The only real rough is not bringing King 🙁 I know it's not what I didn't do, but since I was this close to bringing him in, and my two biggest ML rivals got him, this is my biggest regret for this round.

Smooth: 6/7 attackers contributed, including mirallas and Barnes. Held both of them for weeks to finally get my best OR of the season 33k. Others were Siggy, Antonio, lukaku(c), and king. total 81 (-8)

      Rough-
      1. 3 transfers in (coutinho 1pt, llorente 1pt, Andy Carrol 2pts) for -8.
      2. Deciding against Phillips to King as I didn't fancy taking a -12 hit to field 11 players
      3. Baines missing out on a cleansheet

      Smooth:
      1. Lukaku capt
      2. Amat coming on to play to make 11 active players for the GW (then "rough" - gets zero points - he might as well have stated in the bench)

Rough: Captain Mané, and I was hoping my Llorente transfer would last until Gabbadini's fixtures eased.
      Smooth:

Just about on the smooth side of the '-2' transfers thanks to Barkley doing rather better than Llorente and Coutinho. So long as you get the (C) right you have a chance. 55 (-8) just about holding ML lead but having a real ding-dong with another guy, a Can owner 🙁

Up to 6k odd with 14 out of the last 16 weeks in the green....

      Very Rough,
I bought in any player I thought would repay the 4 point hit.
      Llorente 1 , Baines 1, Coutinho (C) 1, Mignolet 2, Carroll 2
The only player I couldn't fit in was King.
Also sold brunt by accident instead of holebas another -1.
      Total 35 (-16)
More than doubled my rank, after I tripled it last week.
Congrats to everyone overtaking me 🙁

      Smooth: Wildcard time.

-12 taken to swap out 4 non players (Sterling, Sane, Crouch Chambers) to yield a GW28 gross score of 71pts (net 59pts) to take me top of my ML and a 230k rise in my OR.

      Rough: Mane & Llorente
      Smooth: King & Mawson

Rough: Captaining Coutinho instead of Lukaku. Did Stainislas, Ibra, Sterling-> T Carroll, Llorente and Coutinho for -8 hit net loss of -3.
Smooth: Niasse finally came good for me getting me out of trouble.

45-8 net 37 could have been worse.

Need to stick to obvious Captain as whenever try something different get burnt.

Rough: (C)outinho, Mane and Carroll in for -8. RFM missing on 5pt. Not captaining Lukaku (-11). Not increasing my lead in ML despite failure of opponents to have 11 players.

Smooth: King for -4. Still a green arrow and on top of ML.

In ideal world, I'd bring King only, ignore Liverpool's due and captaining Kaku.. Would be 19 points better off 🙁

Rough: Took two hits to get in Lanzini (instead of King) and Llorente, captained Mané instead of Lukaku, Firmino injured, and my team is not good for next gameweek (miss Spurs and Chelsea attackers as well as Alexis, will probably get it wrong with my free transfer). All this planning for next to nothing.

64(-8), Sterling, Phillips, Ibra > King, Coutinho, Lukaku (c)

The smooth were the ft + 1st hit and last minute captain switch from Mane to Lukaku (thanks to members captaincy article).

Rough was the extra bit for Coutihno, but only really a - 2 and needed to ditch Phillips anyway.

Bit of post gameweek smooth: not transferring Kun > Kane too early. Now holding Kun this week and doing Coutihno > Alli

Major rough 30pts (-12) so a dismal 18pts....worst score in last three seasons.

        Baines - 45mins (missed clean sheet) 1pt
        Brunt - Played 16mins. 1pt.
Countinho in for a hit and captained (2pts.)
        Mane in for a hit - 2pts.
Firmino - didnt play and no playing sub.
Llorente in on FT - off injured for 1pt.

Lukaku and Siggy the only relief from the unrelenting misery!

Rough: Baines, Llorente, Firmino injuries. Firm and Llorente HITs failed. Snodgrass and planning for BGW failed in general. Think I'll be a little less inclined to do so next season and just use HITs to cover it.

not as spectacular as i had hoped. especially with Firmino/Lovren missing but more smooth than rough.

        61 (-12) for 49 total from 9 players.

King and Lukaku (C) were the good trades
        Cout and Llorente were not.

But I got rid of a lot of dead wood (Tekkers, Phillips, Stanislas)
and went up 14k in OR and widened my lead in my ML.

Feeling OK about impending 2nd WC once the DGWs are announced and until then have simple adjustments to make (like getting rid of Lovren!)

Smooth; Took a -8 for the first time this season after the Phillips news came in. Finished up 19 points up chiefly due to Lukaku(c). Lost my Maguire cleanie but it was ok with it being a Mawson goal, assisted by Siggy.

Rough; Only got 8 out with Firmino injured and Brunt benched, though he came on so made no difference.

Smooth all the way: Captain Josh redeemed himself in spectacular fashion, lukaku and Coleman did the business, and Siggy and Masson chipped in with some late points.

The pull of Lanzini at that late hour was quite strong; I asked my San Diego Casula comrades and they all voted King bar one; I did a coin toss and Lanzini won it 2-1. For sure, I was very lucky. All 50-50 decisions are.

Been considering a Son punt to enable Costa in for Llorente.

Though attractive, I don't think I'll do it - purely because of the fixture list for him:

      19/03: TOT vs Sou
23/03: China vs. SOUTH KOREA - SUSPENDED BUT TRAVELLING WITH SQUAD
      28/03: SK vs. Syria
      01/04: Bur vs. TOT
      04/04: Swa vs TOT

I can't see him starting all the Spurs games, unlike other alternatives (Eriksen; Alli) with that schedule, and a cursory glance at his time on the pitch after IBs (e.g. GW12) shows he often comes on for a 1pter after these long haul journeys.

In short, getting him in is a 1 week punt and he'd probably not be on the pitch from the beginning for at least 1 of the two nice fixtures after IB you'd be buying him for. So I'm probably going to be looking elsewhere for my value... now, where's that Deeney character...

No problem! Not denying he might be a good call for 2/3 games, it's just the inevitable frustration that makes me think that I will be looking elsewhere MAYBE - still think Costa + Son is better than Llorente + Eriksen!

If Kane is ruled out for 2-3 moths then i would consider Son. But if Kane is out for only 2-3 games then i don't see a point in getting in Son because you'll need to get rid of him soon. And with all the DGWs coming spending 2 FT on Son is just a waste.

Nice post, thing with then and now is Kane, was Kane fit after the last International break, if so then Spurs had the luxury of benching Son, he's not fit now so they don't have that luxury.

He clearly doesn't trust Jansen and they have no other option up front.

Circumstances dictate now, Spurs can't afford to drop points.

Think he'll have to trust Janssen, and also he scored from open play (admittedly Vs Millwall) and may be given a chance to capitalise on that.

Idk, I'm still thinking of Son but these are still important points. To your point; I'm not sure whether Poch would start a knackered through jetlagged Son over Janssen. But you obviously have a point too 🙂

He doesn't have to trust anyone if he doesn't have the faith, a goal against Millwall won't change much.

Nice piece but this is over thinking, similar situation to last week where some were convinced Aguero would be rested for Iheanacho (who Pep also has no trust in) circumstances dictate and again, it didn't happen.

Over thinking to some extent, yeah, but still valid I think.

Don't think Nacho in for Kun was really a concern, and we now have the benefit of hindsight to say it wasn't too.

With Son and Spurs we have a different situation a bit because of the IB, which means it isn't as cut and dried imo!

But anyway, good points.... You getting him in!?!

If Kane is out long term I shall be, if it's short term I'll pass.

Not over thinking it, he/they have points in them and even when he comes on as sub he makes an impact.

It'll be one game to worry about at best in a period where most managers will just send their internationals out as the season is at the business end now.

I think people were more worried De Bruyne etc might have started in lieu of Aguero.

As it happened, Sterling and De Bruyne were the ones to be rotated.

I think Son should be viewed with a little caution though

Same issue for all players in squads for World Cup Qualifiers.

I would be very wary of using a WC this week with players jetting off all around the world for 2 games between GW29 and GW30 - that is 4 games in 2 weeks and a lot of travel for the South Americans in particular

    47. Creedey

What to do with this lot? Pulled the trigger early on Aguero -> Kane.... Silly me.

      Heaton - Foster
      Coleman - Walker - Alonso - McAuley - Olsson
      Sigurdsson - Mané - Lanzini - Sterling (vc) - T. Carroll
      Lukaku (c) - Kane - Barnes

I'm thinking Costa in for Kane if he gets through the match tonight, Gabbiadini in for Barnes next week. So looking to go 3-4-3 again. Reckon Son is nailed as a striker going forward?

      Cheers!!! 🙂

Read your post, really good stuff. I had Eriksen before the dgw27, and he always did so well for me, so I might just bring him back instead. Who in my midfield would you replace him with?

Yeah I'm thinking of sticking Eriksen in for Sterling this week... which answers you, too! However, I can see why you'd want to keep him vs. old club - I have Kun Mane Sterling in that City/Pool matchup so I feel like that's overkill.

Ideally I guess you'd want Lanzini -> Eriksen but I doubt you can afford that?

Here's something a little maverick... what do you chaps think of this? 😀

      Pickford
      Alonso / Coleman / Mawson
      Sanchez / Mane / Coutinho / Sigurdsson / King
      Aguero / Lukaku

      Heaton / Barnes / Brunt / McAuley

Ibrahimovic and Carroll --> Barnes and Sanchez(-4)? Every man and his dog goes for 6pt Costa whilst I get Alexis instead... set up for doing Aguero and Coutinho --> Ibra and Alli over the coming weeks... 😎

      Gabbiadini - Defoe - Deeney

        Notice: Sanchez needed.

I would get him for a hit. Firm out probably

I was all set on doing Aguero > Gabbiadini and Phillips > Alli, but this injury has confused me a bit...

What would you do with 2 FTs here?

      Heaton

      Alonso - Coleman - Holebas

      Mane - Siggy - Sané - Phillips

      Aguero - Kane - Lukaku

      Pickford, Brunt, Robertson, Leko

Maybe Kane, Phillips, Leko > Barnes, Alli, Pedro (-4) and play 3-5-2?

Kane, Phillips > Costa, Sanchez would be perfect but wit Aguero that move may be not possilbe, right?

Indeed, then I would have to ship Aguero too.

Could to Aguero, Kane, Phillips > Costa, Deeney/Gabbiadini, Sanchez (-4) ?

Well well well. Kane injured is a pain in the backside. Had planned
      Kun «» gabbiadini
      Ibra«» Kane
      And upgrade capoue to Sanchez.

      Kinda in a pickle now.

      Pickford
      Alonso - Coleman - Valencia
      Mane - Alli - Sigurdsson - Pedro
      Lukaku - Llorente* - Carroll

      Foster, Capoue, Nyom, Amat

      1 FT 9.6 ITB

Thinking Capoue -> Sanchez and bench Llorente for a week. Anything better?

Anyone had any interesting conversation with casuals today? I had one who scored 10 points from 5 players who said he couldn't believe how lucky I was having 11 players with a fixture last week. When I said I planned for it in advance he thought I was joking as planning for it was impossible.
