Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 29

Our regular post-Gameweek assessment of the latest injuries is rolled out next, as we assess concerns surrounding the two top scoring Fantasy Premier League midfielders.

Mauricio Pochettino offers an optimistic prognosis on Harry Kane’s injured ankle but Southampton’s man of the moment is set for an assessment after hobbling off early at the Lane.

Alexis Sanchez

After limping out of Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns, the Chilean’s Fantasy owners were put on alert by Arsene Wenger’s worrying post-match prognosis:

“He was injured from the tackle in the first half. It’s a bad tackle. His ankle is in a terrible state. He should not have played in the second half. He insisted that he wanted to come out. In the end we had to take him off but he should not have even played. Chile goes to Argentina for a massive game but it’s not until next week. If it’s only a kick he will play. His ankle is swollen. If the ligament is damaged he will not play.”

Despite netting for the eighteenth time this term in that loss against the Baggies, Wenger’s comments means that Sanchez has been subject to an exodus since the weekend deadline – he’s the second most sold player in FPL, with over 24,000 parting company.

However, recent developments indicate that he is likely to push himself through the pain barrier as Chile prepare for a vital World Cup qualifier on Thursday night.

First of all, the local press suggested that Chile medical staff reckon Sanchez is “in good condition and can play”, while the player himself took to social media to say:

“The only failure is not to try.”

This was further backed up by reports from today, which indicate that Sanchez has now returned to training, with the Evening Standard saying, “He did not appear to be bearing any signs of strapping to protect the injury and reports in his homeland suggest he is going through his sessions at full pelt”.

Clearly, as the top scoring player in FPL, Sanchez’ fitness is of vital importance to us at a point where Arsenal – along with Southampton and Manchester United – are one of only three teams set to play 11 times in the final nine Gameweeks.

Although Chile also play at home to Venezuela next Tuesday evening, Arsenal’s Gameweek 30 clash against Man City takes place on late Sunday afternoon, allowing the South American plenty of time to rest and recuperate.

With his side struggling to claim their customary fourth-place finish, Wenger can ill-afford to do without his star attacker and – as evidenced by his manager’s above comments – it will likely take nothing but a serious injury to prevent Sanchez from featuring.

Harry Kane

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Spurs’ clash with Southampton, Mauricio Pochettino revealed that his top scorer may well be back far sooner than expected:

“He’s very positive. He’s talking about after international break, three or four weeks. And that’s good. If you’re positive, it can affect injuries in a big way. But we need to be careful with his injury. If not four weeks, it’s five weeks or whatever. We have full trust in our doctors and physios in that department. We hope that as soon as possible, he can be available again. That’s our wish. We need to assess day by day”.

Similar to Sanchez, a fit-again Kane is expected to play a significant part in our plans for the run-in – in terms of FPL points per match, the duo’s average of 7.3 and 6.9 are more than any regular players.

A total of 12 goals and three assists in ten league outings prior to limping out of last week’s FA Cup win over Millwall triggered a major bandwagon, but the Spurs man has already dropped to just 10% ownership, with over 56,000 managers already selling him since the weekend.

Pochettino’s side now face Burnley, Swansea City, Watford, Bournemouth and Palace in a run that could barely be more favourable and it’s fair to assume that Kane will be fast-tracked into our squads once he’s back in contention.

With the striker closing in on a return, Son Heung-min’s appeal is already on the decline, with weekend scorers Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli looking far more secure routes into Pochettino’s attack. Indeed, given that Spurs will also have a double Gameweek further down the line, there’s an argument to have one, or even both midfielders along with Kane for our Wildcard squads, once the remaining fixtures have been rescheduled.

Eden Hazard

The Belgian slipped further behind Sanchez in the FPL midfield standings after missing Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Stoke with a minor problem, according to manager Antonio Conte:

“In the last training, he felt a bit of a problem in his calf, for this reason, I decided not to risk him. That is why he didn’t play today.”

With Hazard unavailable, Willian grabbed his opportunity on the right of Chelsea’s front three by firing the opener against Mark Hughes’ men.

While there’s no denying that Hazard is vital to Chelsea’s title tilt, Conte is clearly unwilling to take any chances with the winger’s fitness – all the more so given that his team sit ten points clear at the summit with ten matches remaining.

Much depends on the severity of the Belgian’s problem, though, having withdrawn from international duties already, his 28% owners will clearly be desperate for him to recover in time for the upcoming home clash against Palace.

Reports emerging from the Belgium camp place considerable doubt on that, though, with Roberto Martinez suggesting that Hazard could be out for up to 15 days – a timescale that could potentially see him face a race to be fit for the Gameweek 31 clash with Man City.

Non-owners, though, may well instead look to the in-form Pedro as a potential budget-friendly alternative for the run-in. The Spaniard has bagged two goals and a pair of assists in his last four outings and, at price of just 7.2 – compared to Hazard and Diego Costa, at 10.2 and 10.7 respectively – could prove an ideal solution for those already keen to draft in big-hitters such as Sanchez, Kane and Zlatan Ibrahimovic once the injuries and suspensions clear.

Manolo Gabbiadini

Departing early in the 2-1 loss to Spurs, the Southampton frontman has since withdrawn from international duties, with Claude Puel revealing post-match:

“It’s an injury to his groin, and we will see when it’s examined in the next few days. I think and I hope it is not bad, but for his national team I think it is not possible for him to play. We will see for us how many times he will stay out. It’s an important player for us with his quality and his clinical edge but now it’s an opportunity for another player to show us their quality.”

With six goals in his first four appearances across all competitions since arriving from Napoli, Gabbiadini wasted little time in earning himself a bandwagon, rising in price by 0.4 to 6.9 and boasting a 10% ownership ahead of his trip to the Lane.

Second only to Kane for transfers out up front, he’s been sold by over 17,000 FPL managers despite being set for back-to-back home clashes against Bournemouth and Palace directly after the break.

As mentioned above, Saints are also set to play 11 times in the remaining nine Gameweeks, and the Italian’s mid-price appeal looked ideal for our three-man frontlines over the run-in.

Much depends on the prognosis, though with midfield pair Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond struggling for consistency, it remains to be seen whether either is capable of offering a viable alternative to the new boy, should he be ruled out for any period of time.

Michail Antonio

The West Ham midfielder has withdrawn from England duties with a hamstring injury sustained against Leicester last weekend.

Antonio’s assist in the 3-2 loss took him into ninth spot in the FPL midfield standings, yet, despite a very favourable 6.9 price tag, he currently sits in less than 10% of squads.

Although the club have yet to officially comment – aside from a tweet from co-owner David Sullivan’s son – growing reports suggest that Antonio could be out for up to a month, which, bearing in mind that he faces Hull, Arsenal, Swansea and Sunderland’s dodgy defences in the next four Gameweeks, would prove a bitter blow for Slaven Bilic and Fantasy managers alike.

Although both Manuel Lanzini and Andre Ayew offer in-form alternatives as a route into the West Ham attack, the lack of a double Gameweek further down the line somewhat dents their appeal. Should he indeed be ruled out, Antonio owners may now choose to look for assets amongst those sides that are set to play ten or more fixtures in the remaining nine Gameweeks.

The Rest…

Man United’s Jesse Lingard will be assessed ahead of England’s midweek clash with Germany after being replaced late on in the weekend win over Middlesbrough, having picked up an ankle problem. Phil Jones was released from the Three Lions’ squad earlier today after sustaining an injury in training. Gareth Southgate has since revealed that Jones has sustained a toe problem.

Arsenal keeper Petr Cech was forced off during the 3-1 loss to West Brom with a calf problem with the Daily Mail reporting that he now faces a month on the sidelines. That would mean starts for David Ospina, potentially making the 4.7 FPL option a short-term candidates for our squads.

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil (hamstring) and Lucas Perez (thigh) missed the Hawthorns clash. Ozil has since pulled out of the Germany squad to face England tomorrow.

Earlier today, Everton confirmed that midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin suffered “a minor calf injury” against Hull City last weekend and will be assessed ahead of their Gameweek 30 Merseyside derby trip to Anfield. The Toffees’ Seamus Coleman has yet to train for the Republic of Ireland this week but local reports state he will “be okay” to face Wales on Friday.

Wes Morgan was forced to miss Leicester’s 3-2 win at West Ham after sustaining a “slight back injury” in the midweek Champions League encounter with Sevilla.

Man City right-backs Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta have both withdrawn from international duties over the last 48 hours.

Lamine Kone picked up a knee problem and failed to make Sunderland’s home match against Burnley. The Ivorian has since pulled out of international duties and is optimistic of being fit in time to face Watford next time out.

John Terry missed Chelsea’s trip to Stoke with a knock.

Palace’s James McArthur has withdrawn from the Scotland squad with the problem that forced him to miss last week’s home win over Watford.

Both Winston Reid (thigh) and Pedro Obiang (ankle) were forced off during West Ham’s home loss to Leicester City, with reports indicating that Reid could be out for six weeks, while the latter may even be sidelined for the season.

Just for the record on TV/SV....

I probably take more hits over a season than anybody else on here over the years (WR and Doosra !!)...My plan is always at least a hit a week on avg and ends up doing more than that. All that ever means is that I end up buying and selling the best picks over and over again for more and more money.

By the end of each season I end up with one of the highest TV/SV's on here but with a team that looks no different to anybody else's...

Just thought that was worth saying.

            Randolph (Jaku)
            Alonso Walker Valencia (Baines Yoshida)
            Sanchez Eriksen Siggy Mane (Snodgrass)
            Carroll Costa(c) Lukaku

I have 109.4 TV o where is my team different (or better) than anybody else's?...it' just the same...All that happens is you end up buying back the same good picks for more money...

The team looks like a normal team bcuz u got a very heavy bench. Downgrade baines to a cheap def and Carroll to Barnes and u get the best template def atm plus a front 7 of maybe
                Sanchez eriksen alli mane siggy
                Lukaku Costa
                That's like everyone's dream.
We have to keep finding budget picks and getting them in at the right time which very few can manage.

And can I get your team link? This is my 1st year playing. I tried to increase my team value but managed only 105.6 till date. Just want to see your way of increasing it.

105.6 indicates that you have built TV very well. Above that is potentially down to too much chasing. When one gets to a certain point in the season, the focus should be purely on point accrual

Yup. Gave up building team value 2 weeks ago. Luckily didn't buy Kane and Gabbi before their injuries because of it. Shaved a million OR in 10 gws but still at 524k. Hopefully I make to the top 100k.

so you buy players who look like they will rise early on then replace with the players once you have that .1m?

No. I but the players who look like they have good fixtures and sell those who don't. But every time I do that i'm selling players that rose by 0.2 for only increase in SV of 0.1...and then later on I buy them back for inflated prices. You never actually end up with a better team...

generally, if a player was approaching that .2 rise but you wanted another for the likely points would you sell for -4 or hold for the .1 sv ?

Obviously there is a lot more to your success than just taking hits- you must be very good at judging a good haul from a player on a given game week.

TV and SV means f all....in simple terms...What matters is how early you get a top player and for how much....and then stick hold of them.

Our favourite poster bleated on about maximising team value. I always ask how many gw's in a season do you have 0 itb?
TV is important and helpful but over the course of a season I reckon 1- 2 million is neglible.

It doesn't matter at all. As above...those in BlankGW28 with a low TV went for King, those with a high TV went for Coutinho double up with Mane or Firmino....Did a high TV help or hinder ?

                        Correct...

There's always a fifth mid in this game with gold in his pockets. Sometimes they're called Capoue, then Philips, then King...blah blah blah.

They're the key to doing well in this game...

All that a high TV or SV does is drive you away from them.

high TV/SV can give you more options and the ability to have more expensive players. However, like above, it doesn't matter if your high priced player is outscored by a budget one. So sometimes it can hinder you in that you overlook a budget option with form/good fixtures as you can afford a more expensive alternative. Of course, if all the big guns/ expensive players start firing at the same time, it can be to your advantage to have the high TV/SV. Hasn't really worked that way this year, as every other week it seems and expensive player is hurt, suspended or just not in form.

Premium priced players are based on what they did last year...not this year..Every single year offers us up sub 6.0 mill players that will be 8.0 mill next year. Alli and Vardy for example last year.

At the end of the day every pick is just a player with a football...price doesn't matter...

if you are WC now, give some consideration to what type of team you will want for the big DGW37 as well as what is good for the immediate future. You have 8 players that will not have a DGW in GW37. So if you still have your BB to use for that GW, you may want to rethink a few of your picks now to ensure you maximise how many DGW players you will have. This way it minimises how many transfer or hits etc you will have to take to field the team you will want in DGW37.

Jak is the cheapest you can get but no double

no worries, but don't thank me yet, need to see if he pans out first. I brought him in on my WC last week to pair up with Pickford. Was sad letting Heaton/Jaku go, as I had them since GW4.

Is there any real way to guarantee one person one team in practice?

Yeah never gonna happen. They don't want to encourage gambling either. Prem has appeal in many countries where gambling is illegal. Same way you'll never see a Coca Cola advert about 'Jacks and Coke' or 'Cuba Libres' etc.

Ya that is a fair point
But even for a guy trying to admin a honest money league it would be nice if there was some way to have some checks and balances on managers to make sure that the ethics are kept to

I know if i caught any manager running multi teams in a league i admin it would be mean lifetime ban for their asses

not really. in the world cup ff i ran with mates we entered as many teams as we wanted as long as each team paid the $10. its actually quite hard to manage more than one team they end up very similar in the end

None that are practical. And they don't really want it anyway. Isn't it better to say we have 4.5 million players than to be honest and say that we have 3 million players with average of 1.5 teams per player

                TV £107.4

Your second point is valid and to me mind boggling.
THe first about SV less so, most players 80% probably 90% of players have no interest or knowledge of it.

              Lets talk about Southampton:

GW33 to GW37 they have 7 fixtures in 5 game weeks

And they are a useful source of cheaper DGW options, ideal right?

But a closer look shows that they play 5 of the current top 6 in that run, all of them bar Spurs in fact. So you have the equivalent of 5 weeks of terrible fixtures, plus Hull at home and Middlesbrough away.

All this for a side that is in the risky category of having nothing to play for already - no chance of Europe, no chance of relegation - and these types of teams can often stagnate towards the end of a season.

Now i'm not saying don't get Southampton assets, but would you be happy to play them in single GWs of City at home or Liverpool or Chelsea away? Because if not you need to have a strong enough squad to bench them some weeks.

itll be pretty random with so many teams with nothing to play for.
it might help players from the top teams who are still fighting for 1-4th as their opposition relaxes (or the relegation battlers) but then some fringe youth team player will get a start and score a hattrick or something.
im not really looking forward to 37 and id rather bet on an individual for TC than teams for BB

Likw many here, I WCed in GW36 last season and then BBed in GW37 - halved my ranking.

But look at the likely candidates for this season:

Chelsea - could be champions by GW37.
              Spurs - safe in UCL
              Arsenal - in civil war
              Southampton - comfortably midtable
ManU - knackered and rotating like mad

last season most wc 33, bb 34, tc 37. it was the perfect run and people who planned properly got 150 ish for 34 and 100 ish for 37

gw 36 is far too late to hold a wc for if youve got issues in your team. gw37 is a total lottery with most teams having nothing to play for

I managed around 150/100 pts for the 2 DGWs last year without having my WC, BB or TC. It was my first year of FPL (and first year of following any type of football in general) so I had no idea there would be blanks, DGW etc and blew all my chips relatively early. So it is possible to get good hauls even without having all your chips, as long as your picks work out (thank you Sanchez, Kun and Gomes for last year). That said, I have used my WC already but will be saving my BB for DGW37 and hope for even better returns this year. With the WC, I just felt I had to much rubbish in my team after GW28, so used the WC last week to set myself up for the immediate future and the DGW37. Scored 27 points more that I would have if I didn't WC, and confident I'll get even more out of using the WC early in the coming weeks.

Realistically when else would you use the bench boost? It has to be GW37 really, and so either you wildcard the week before with full knowledge of those issues above, or do it around now to get ahead of the game because you don't think it'll be that important.

It may not have the big impact of last season but there will be some big scores if we can pick the right horses

Mane to cheapie and Llorente/Carroll to Ibra next week is an option if Mane fails to deliver this week.

even if Mane fails to deliver this week, I think I would still hold onto him given they have Bournemouth at home the next GW. Although, that didn't work out too well for me when I held onto Ibra because of the Bournemouth fixture....

Or down grade Sterling for DeRoon for fodder and DGWs

Save this week, then next week Llorente to Gestede, and Brunt to Valencia. Then you should have enough left over to upgrade Robertson to Vertonghen. That way you can either play 4 at the back in a 4-4-2 or play King in a 3-5-3. King may be useful after the tough fixtures pass as they have an easy run in. Gestede is a cheapo forward with a DGW in GW34 so if youre game, you can start him for a punt. If you don't like that, just get the cheapest forward you can.

Feeling like my team is a bit mehh for the past couple of weeks.
              Dropped a lot in ranking!!
Brought in Alli for Snodgrass this GW already.

Maybe Valencia in for Brunt or change Funes Mori/Coutinho??

              Pickford.
              Alonso, Robertson, Walker.
              Mane, Cout, Alli, Siggy.
              Lukaku, Llorente, Costa.

              Heaton, Brunt, Funes Mori*, Whelan.

If Kane IS back after the break, would you rather bring in Ibra or Kane?

If it was not for the fear of Ibra ownership level for 34 a lot more would consider this. And before 34 Spurs fixtures are much better.

This is why I am asking. Form and fixtures go in Kane's favour but Ibra has a double GW and so is the obvious transfer choice for many

It not at all obvious to me. I have a plan for Ibra in but Kane could kill palace away in 34. Both of Ibra fixtures are tough and Kane could outscore him in 34.
The thing is Kane and Ibra are so similar in price it is easy to change.
Optimum might be Kane in as soon as back and swap to Ibra for 34 to cover the ownership and armband problem he represents in 34.

Let's say Kane scores 2 and gets 3 BPS he will get 13 or even 3 goals and he'd get 17 for that week. If Ibra scores 1 in each then gets 3BPS in each then he gets 18. If he gets a goal and assist in those same weeks he gets 17 which makes him on par with Kane anyway. I think Ibra is the better option despite the fixtures, for that week only.

On a Wildcard. At 123k and aim is to beat 18k (personal best) so taking a few gambles but keeping Lukaku out of fear and for (C) in gw33. How's this look?

                  DDG Pickford
                  Alonso Valencia Walker Bertrand Friend
                  Sanchez Alli Eriksen Tadic Zaha
                  Vardy(Ibra) Lukaku Negredo

Exact cash ITB for Vardy to Ibra

                  31; Save
                  32; Vardy > Ibra
33; Will have 2 FT, either burn it or sideways move to fix injury
                  34; Lukaku > Benteke
35; Negredo, Friend > Gabbiadini, Bellerin
                  36; Save
37; Benteke, Zaha > 2 x doublers (or could even keep for Hull home and use FT's to get other doublers, who may have better fixtures like City players for example and just go with 13 doublers plus the two Palace boys.

34 doublers: (7) DDG, Valencia, Ibra, Negredo, Friend, Zaha, Benteke
35/36 doublers: (5) Bertrand, Tadic, Gabbiadini, Bellerin, Sanchez
37 doublers: 15 BB or 13 BB with Benteke (HUL), Zaha (HUL)

Friend is the only worry but I can't find a decent way of shaving .6 off to get Gibson.

I wouldn't like having the Palace or Boro picks in my team for any length of time. Negredo, Tadic and Zaha are taking up valuable attacking berths imo.

Those are the gambles. Negredo and Zaha rotate until 34 and Tadic has a nice 2 immediate fixtures before 2 x doubles. Although I must admit, losing Siggy for him just feels wrong (haven't done it yet but will have to)

Sounds solid, altho seldom goes according to plan.
Valdes, Gibson instead of DDg and Friend perhaps

Cheers. That works money wise but would then be a United player short and have to play one of Valdes/Pick every week. Maybe just leaving Friend in as a punt won't be end of world as one of Walker or Alonso would be being benched to accommodate him that week anyway. But does feel like I'm missing a trick going with just one unfit Boro defender.

I like a lot about this. But you don't have to maximize dgw players to get the best result for a dgw. Check the decent sgw fixtures too.

I would not go there with Zaha Benteke or Negredo. But they could work as punts I suppose. Not having these would reduce the hit count too. I would have decent sgwers instead.

Finally have you factored in some spare cash for rises and falls?

Yeah cheers mate. Those are the big gambles but just couldn't go without at least buying a ticket in the DGW raffle. Yeah once Lukaku becomes Benteke in 34, the cash is all there to be comfortable. No hits in that plan but fully expecting to have to take some along the way.

As you want to punt on increasing OR you gotta buy those lottery tickets. GL if only draft 1 on 43 anyway over the break!!

Teke could get 2 and 2 while Lukaku gets 10-15; not sure why you want Teke for 34?

                                      34 and 35

                                      Benteke (liv, TOT, BUR)

                                      Lukaku (whu, CHE)

It's the 35 game on top of the double that swings it. Plus the 3m saved funds Bellerin and Gabbiadini in 35 who both have 2x doubles to come.

Didn't think of the value of having enough for Gabbi and Bellerin(rather not have Arsenal D but I get the point); I think Teke is still a 2 and 2 and 2 but if You have Gabbi instead of Barnes then you do make up the points possibly. Nice!

There might be a surprise fixture announcement but we can probably guess the 37 fixtures
However based on what we know now is the the SOU v ARS fixtures going to be in

                                          A. Ars 37 dgw
                                          B. Ars 35 / 36 dgw

It'll be put in either 35 or 36

Both Arsenal and Saints already like have a double in 37; Arsenal (sto, SUN) Southampton (mid, MNU)

Which means Saints and Arsenal should have 2 x doubles in 3, maybe even 2 gameweeks

Thanks. That certainly makes the Sanchez TC in 35 or 36 less attractive that it would have been if the SUN home game was in 35 or 36.
In 37 if Arsenal are still chasing CL spot and SUN already relegated that could be a cricket score.

on a great article that the guy who wrote put tons of effort and research into.

The article was written prior to gw24, where Lukaku had scored 3 goals in his previous 6 games. He went on to score 9 in his next 6 games. I checked the guys link who commented to see if he bought Lukaku but noticed he hadn't posted in the last 30 days...
