Scout Notes – Internationals – Thursday

There was plenty of Premier League involvement, but precious little influence, on a busy night of international football across continents and time zones, with the undisputed headline created by Alexis Sanchez’ outing for Chile.

World Cup Qualifying – CONMEBOL

Argentina 1 Chile 0
Alexis Sanchez dispelled any doubts on his fitness by turning out for Chile and completing the full 90 minutes, though his influence could not prevent a 1-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Argentina.

The Gunners asset and top scoring Fantasy Premier League player struck the bar and was outwardly frustrated at the defeat that leaves Chile’s World Cup qualification in the balance.

Following the ankle injury which saw him withdrawn on 78 minutes of the 3-1 defeat at West Brom on Saturday, Sanchez had suffered FPL sales of over 31,000 before last night’s encounter.

He will now doubtless figure in a second qualifier in the early hours of Tuesday with Chile hosting Venezuela; that will likely see Arsenal “assess” Sanchez on his return.

However, should he come through Tuesday’s outing unscathed, there would be few doubts that he will be in contention for Arsenal given that their Premier League fixture with Manchester City takes place on Sunday.

His FPL sales are now likely to stall, then, with Sanchez set to become a key transfer target ahead of Arsenal’s yet to be confirmed two double Gameweek dates.

Elsewhere in Thursday’s clash, Sergio Aguero started and played 58 minutes, while his Manchester City team-mate Nicolas Otamendi managed the full 90 and missed a great chance to double Argentina’s advantage before the interval.

Manchester United’s Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo started and finished the match for the hosts, while City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo also played the full match for Chile.

Meanwhile, Arsenal keeper David Ospina kept a clean sheet as Colombia beat Bolivia 1-0, while West Brom striker Salomon Rondon played the full 90 minutes in Venezuela’s 2-2 draw with Peru.

The forward didn’t score, perhaps not surprisingly for a man without a league goal since a Gameweek 16 hat-trick against Swansea.

Ecuador lost 2-1 win in Paraguay, with two Valencias – Man United’s Antonio and Everton’s Enner – both involved throughout.

Swansea’s ‘forgotten man’, midfielder Jefferson Montero, hasn’t featured for the Swans since Gameweek 18, but managed a three-minute run-out for Ecuador as they chased a late equaliser.

As mentioned, the second round of South American qualifiers will take place on Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning.

Uruguay 1 Brazil 4
Brazil came from a goal down in Uruguay to consolidate their place at the top of the South American table.

The hosts went ahead early and then spent the rest of the match regretting it, with former Spurs midfielder Paulinho hitting a hat-trick.

Liverpool duo Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho both started and a shot from the former led to one of Paulinho’s goals.

The pair were subbed off late on, with Chelsea winger Willian replacing Coutinho. Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho was also given a run-out towards the end of the match.

Brazil now host Paraguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning and with the Merseyside derby against Everton taking place on Saturday lunchtime, it’s reported that Liverpool will arrange a chartered flight to ensure the duo return as early as possible.

Middlesbrough’s Christhian Stuani and Hull City’s Abel Hernandez were on the bench for Uruguay, and both were brought on in the second half.

With five matches left to play, Brazil top the qualifying table by seven points, suggesting that their place at the finals in Russia next year is all but done and dusted.

That could lead to key players being rested from future squads, although that will be an issue for Fantasy Premier League managers to ponder next season.

World Cup Qualifying – AFC

China 1 South Korea 0

China won a fractious encounter with rivals South Korea 1-0, with Swansea midfielder Sung-yeung Ki at the heart of the visitors’ ultimately futile second-half push for an equaliser.

Tottenham’s 5.5%-owned asset Heung-Min Son took no part in the match as he was suspended.

The midfielder is expected to return for South Korea’s second qualifier of the break, a Tuesday might home match with Syria.

Southampton centre-half Maya Yoshida played the full 90 minutes in Japan’s 2-0 win in the United Arab Emirates.

Both Japan and South Korea remain well-placed to qualify automatically for Russia 2018 and will play again on Tuesday at 11.35am and midday respectively.

International Friendly

Nigeria 1 Senegal 1
Barnet’s Hive stadium was the less than glamorous setting for a friendly featuring a number of Premier League players.

Leicester pair Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa started for Nigeria, as did Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi and Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, with the latter equalising through a late penalty.

Iwobi played 61 minutes and Watford’s Isaac Success came on just after the hour-mark. Chelsea’s Victor Moses trained with the Nigerian squad but played no part in the match as he continues to recover from a calf injury.

Senegal’s star man, the 23.7%-owned Liverpool midfielder Sadio Mane, started the match on the bench but was given a 25-minute run-out after the interval.

West Ham’s Cheikhou Kouyate, Everton holding midfielder Idrissa Gueye and Stoke striker Mame Biram Diouf all played the full 90 minutes, while Hull midfielder Alfred N’Diaye was an unused sub.

Both sides will be involved in further friendlies on Monday night. Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp, Mane’s clash with Ivory Coast will take place in Paris, thus limiting his travel time ahead of that Everton encounter.

That stupid rumor about Donnarumma joining City for 130m really irritates me. We could get Dahoud, Van Dijk, Ederson, and Kimmich/Fabinho for that money. I hope we aren't stupid enough to do the former.

        This.

I think that's why they're mooting it - Buffon for £50m back in the day is the precedent... would you pay that for Buffon for 10+ years in hindsight? Almost definitely, so logically maybe you'd also do the same for Donnarumma.

Seems a bit silly given the other players you could buy, so I totally get OP's point!

    Gah, bottomed:

Really tempted by that WC now. Can see so many little improvements I could make, and am facing quite a few -4s to get my team decent again for the next few weeks (downgrading defence to upgrade; removing WBA; repurposing Kun value elsewhere). Am going to be bringing in DGW players anyway over time, as they also tend to be players in the better teams. Chasing in ML and I reckon I could give myself 30-40 points by unexpectedly popping the WC.

    Am I overthinking?

    From this:

    Randolph / Jaku
    Alonso Coleman Pieters Brunt RFM
    Mane Siggy Antonio Eriksen Fletcher
    Kun Llorente Kaku

    To

    Valdez / Jaku
    Alonso Yoshi Valencia Coleman Fabio/otherBoro
Mane Siggy (Sanchez in 31) Tadic Eriksen De Roon/Clayton
    Kaku Vardy Deeney
(leaves me with 1.2itb after I bring Sanchez in for 31, and can always remove Coleman later)

Worth it? Sorry for long post

no need to WC, goalies aint a priority both will conceed IMO. just take Antonio out for Tadic or King (a punt for 2 weeks and then WC) but overall your team is better than a lot of other teams

Tadic/JWP coming in - also feel like I need Leicester cover, so Vardy might well come in for Kun (enabling Sanchez) or Llorente (hate owning - all ML rivals do).

But my defence is so heavy and bad atm which is why I'm considering it - I'm saving myself a mass of -4s!

      So your moves are:

      Randolph > Valdes
Pieters, Brunt, Funes Mori > Valencia, Yoshida, Fabio
Antonio, Fletcher > Tadic, De Roon
      Aguero, Llorente > Vardy, Deeney.

I think your time does improve, particularly with the DGWK34 in mind (getting in 3 Boro bench players) but personally I wouldn't WC on this tempting as it is. The value of having it going into the bumper double is just too great, and your team already looks quite nice to me.

        Hey Prok, hope you're good!

Yeah maybe it's just me looking at it too much - feel like I need to take a LOT of -4s the next few weeks to remove a lot of deadwood. Plus I'm really confused about this week's transfer atm - so I feel like it might be worth a go.

I feel like I would be bringing in players who have that 'bumper double' anyway, but I totally see (and know from last year) the value of having the WC ready! I just feel like I'm a bit behind now (50 pts in ML) and my team needs the refresh!

Will def ponder more, but thanks for your reply 🙂

I quite like it, what do you think of this lot?:

      Valdez/Pickford
      Alonso, Valencia, Walker, Stephens, Ake
      Siggy, Alli, Eriksen, Ayew, JWP
      Lukaku, Vardy, Costa (Ibra)

Leaves nothing itb asfter I swap Costa for Ibra so Eriksen/Vardy will become Sanchez/Gabba in a couple of weeks.

        Looks good to me, mate.

Many thanks Individual, wasn't my intention to piggyback your post, just looks like you are having similar thoughts!

I'm just thinking that 3rd def is so rarely used and my next choice is Yoshida so I get 0.5m for the gamble. I tend to take hits for a first 11 injury plus I've already bench boosted so little requirement for a deep bench.

(Plus I don't know how necessary a wc will be for dgw37 considering it will likely involve most of the big hitters we'll already be holding anyway)

Yeah I was thinking Britos at 4.3, but I think the Boro def would just sit on the bench and I'd hope he'll be playing by 34!

Killer midfield in that idea - but I don't like having a "non bench" player. Redmond could be JWP! Hmm... Thanks dude, great idea.

No prob. Watford has two great games for cs. Pecking order is Proedl, Kaboul, Britos and Cathart with Kabasele injured.
JWP is great shout. Thinking the same but was leaning towards Tadic due to pens.
And pefer Costa over Vardy. How long you plan him to be in your team?

          1. Individual
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 27 days ago

Vardy will sit there until GW33 - it'll be between him and Kaku for who to take out for Ibra. I have a fair bit of cash itb, so I could actually get both Costa and Ibra. Only worry is when Kane returns factoring him in!

If I don't do the WC, I'll probably bring Tadic/JWP + Vardy in anyway

Thanks on Watford - I think I'd want a value bencher so I'd be tempted by Kaboul/Britos, but tbf I might as well, if I'm not playing him, just get a sxxx Boro defender and stick him as 3rd sub til 34... hence Fabio/Barragan/whatever under consideration lol

Yeah, I know - could well do Alli Eriksen Sanchez DeRoon Tadic midfield! Don't think that looks too awful either. I like having Mane, though. Can always do Alli but I think at least for the game against Bournemouth in 31 he needs to stay there

Ditch Coleman if on WC imo and pick up Sanchez now, Siggy could get a return but probably not worth the 4 points over Sanchez that you'll need to sacrifice to bring him in.

Like the Tadic pick, v under the radar and in my WC side too, with Gabbi out he's the obvious go to choice I think too.

Can you not squeeze in Pickford for Jaku? Will mean an extra DGW'er down the line, again, saving a transfer.

Otherwise looks nice, should set you up well for the 34, 35/6 DGW's without WC'ing and taking advantage of the fixtures before then.

Hey mate, thanks for your comment!

Sanchez would be an FT in 31.

I could do Jaku -> Pickford, yeah, I'm at 4.1 so it's not too bad!

And that's exactly my thoughts - worried about confirmation bias here, though, so I'll have to think about it!

Mane I'd keep short term (need to balance futureproofing and short termism) because of the Bournemouth fixture in 31!

All chips and a wildcard remaining. My plan is to bring in a few DGers for 34, maybe 2 or Zaha/PVA/Valdez and definitely bring in Ibra and Valencia.
Then TC either 35 or 36, whichever Sanchez is given a nice double. And WC whichever he isn't.
    37 BenchBoost after WC
    38 All out attack

...seems alright at the moment, but plan will likely change

Yep, that's good - I'm thinking my team looks terrible atm and I've used my TC (Kun semi-fail), but yeah with all chips available that's sound imo

Yeah I think it's all the correct advice!

Was just remembering what AZ said on the scoutcast about gaining a pile of points by WCing - I'm so behind I might well need it, lots of my players owned by my ML rivals etc etc. But I can equally see the usual WC issue of my former team outscoring my new team cropping up!

              🙂

Agreed, this is basically my plan too (at the moment).

Only trouble is, Sanchez’s ‘nice’ doubles aren’t that nice. His nice double is GW37 when I want to play BB.

In the other DGWs he’ll have Southampton + either Spurs or Man Utd, not great.

      1. Scheister
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 27 days ago

Hmm great point. What to do, BB or TC? Maybe TC Ibra in 34, not bad fixtures?

          • 8 Years
          7 years, 27 days ago

I think it has to be BB in 37.

Ibra in 34 is one option, but again not great.

Other option I am considering is Sanchez/Aguero in a single GW against someone rubbish eg Man City home to Hull or Arsenal home to Sunderland etc.

The way I see it they only have to beat Aguero's 9 pts in GW27 to be considered a success!

I think I read this somewhere but obviously it's not confirmed yet. I think the Southampton game is the one that has to go in 35/36.

    1 FT. 2.1M ITB

    Heaton Jaku
    Walker Alonso Coleman Pieters Amat
    Sanchez Mane King Siggy Allen
    Kaku Defoe Gabbi

    a. Pieters < Valencia
    b. Pieters + Mane > Valencia + Alli for -4

would you prioritise Alli or Valencia or worth taking a hit to get both? Is it worth having 4 strong defenders or should I sell one of below for valencia?

      Hi mate

Erm, I like that 2 part move (so b). I have Coleman and Alonso atm and see what you're struggling with, but losing Alonso is asking for trouble and Coleman has 2 amazing fixtures 32-33.

I'd be unsure about losing Mane, especially with Bournemouth home in 31, but can kind of see why you're doing it!

cheers mate, that's exactly what im struggling with as my 3 defenders are quality with good fixtures but i need to get valencia in there for the dgw.. Mane does have good fixtures but worried about liverpool against smaller teams and worried about Alli''s form, who I will regret not bringing in... tough decisions

still have my WC and all my jokers..im in the 4k rank and top of my mini league but not by much..

I think Valencia can wait - I've been thinking of him too but I had a look at the fixtures and there's nothing there I'm particularly jumping for joy about owning him in. I'm kind of seeing Coleman as the placeholder for him to be sold come 33.

other option is to sell Gabbi + Allen for: Alli + 5.2 forward....

team for the gw would be something like:

            Heaton/Jaku
            Walker Alonso Coleman
            Alli Sanchez Mane King Siggy
            Kaku Defoe

      Hey mate, sorry.

I think it's good for 34, tbh Coleman should probably go for Valencia, unless you're replacing Baines with him!

Fletcher has no fixture, so maybe think about a 4.5 Boro/Palace asset there, too if you can do it

But I think 3 DGW players, with Valencia, Ibra and 1/2 others, is what I'll be looking for too, so on that basis it's 8/10

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has hit back at those who have called him "a brainless idiot" as a result of his disciplinary difficulties in his first season in England.

Xhaka, who moved to Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer, was sent off against Swansea City in October, and was dismissed again during the Premier League win over Burnley in January.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown went as far as to suggest the Switzerland international was jeopardising his long-term future at the club, and claimed manager Arsene Wenger "is going to have to work with Granit Xhaka and teach him how to tackle."

"What hurt me a lot was the source of the criticism and its form. It didn't come from my club, but from former players who don't know me any more than they know Arsenal," Xhaka, who has also picked up eight yellow cards for his club this term, told Swiss media.

"People who don't know anything about how I work attacked me by making me look like a brainless idiot and nasty.”

"Arsene Wenger couldn't have given me a better sign of confidence. After two weeks working with the fitness coach, the coach came to me and took a weight off my shoulders: 'You're playing!'" Xhaka said.

"You see, such a sending-off can, according to the circumstances, change a career. The coach also could very well have said to me that I was a burden on the route to success. He also could have sacked me!"

Sadio Mane captain, discuss please, he hasn't gone more than 3 games without getting returns this season (excluding Afcon) and has a penchant for hurting big teams/those in the bracket just under that i.E. Everton, plus we always beat everton in the derby, if we manage to batter them he will get returns. So what do you think?

This is the gameweek to take a risk on captaincy if any, with Costa being the stand out option and having a low ceiling.

Good risk for the reasons you say.

The form captains are Kaku and Vardy, though, which is who I'm considering (Kaku and Mane I own; Vardy I'd bring in and (c)_

For some strange reason Kaku never scores against us and I'm not sure how he'll do away vs a big team, he'd always been a player who didn't score vs the big teams but this season he's gotten a few. I'm benching him to play Lanzini due to away record and record vs us, risky given his form but could give me an advantage over my rivals as we all have him. Vardy slipped my mind and yes he is the form pick but stoke have frustrated stronger attacks than Leicester this season.

Benching Kaku in that form? Wow. Ballsy!

Agreed on Stoke. I need to just take the risk, I'm quite a bit behind in my ML now.

I don't feel there's too much risk in this one tbh, if he does score Kaku will get 1 goal max, Lanzini has 3 10 point returns in his last 6, does seem a home player though admittedly. Same here, playing it safe won't help me close down the gap.

It was the pivotal moment in the match and came when Bent met Andy Reid's fifth-minute cross and fired towards goal.

Reina looked to have it covered, until the ball hit the beach ball, and to the goalkeeper's horror, span past him and into the net.

Within minutes, the home side countered through Andy Reid after a Liverpool free-kick, and after a Steed Malbranque flick-on Darren Bent did his England chances no harm whatsoever, firing past Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to put the home side a goal ahead, albeit in somewhat controversial circumstances. The ball appeared to cannon in past Reina after hitting a Liverpool beach ball, but despite Liverpool protests referee Mike Jones allowed the goal to stand.

For this week would you rather have:
    1) Coleman and Baines (currently own. Possible attacking returns and maybe a pen for Baines in the derby)
    2) Coleman and Valencia (Valencia has West Brom at home. The international break may have caused the Arsenal 3-1 win feelings of elation to pass - they hadn't scored in the two games previous to that)
    3) Coleman and Walker (Walker attacking returns and CS potential, good run now until the end plus DGW - could wait for Rose though who is 5.9)

If it is 2 or 3 AND Gabbi is fit this week, it will be a -4. I will eventually get rid of Coleman too for the other one of Walker or Valencia.
