Site Features

Hot Topics Page Goes Live

The first iteration of the Hot Topics page is now live and can be accessed here.

The link is also available under the Hot Topics tab in the sidebar widget – View All to see the current Hot Topics page.

This represents the first step in what hopefully will be an evolution in the way the community use the site from this point on.

As it stands, the first version is a simple index of the current Hot Topics created, offering direct access to all the discussions flagged as a Hot Topic.

However, we have big plans to evolve this further.

The first step will be to add features to the current page, allowing Moderators to pin Topics to the top of the page to keep them current.

Following that, we will likely look at a method of indicating the current most active Hot Topics and those contributing.

The next proposed steps take even bigger strides.

The vision is for the Hot Topic page to link to a mirrored version of the discussion, allowing for interaction without the need to enter the article thread.

In this way users can choose to view and post within a discussion in the traditional way, via the article thread, or use the Hot Topic page to see the discussion full page and post replies via that view. They will not be separate discussions, there will just be two methods to view and interact.

As this process evolves, the community moderation team will change their approach to Hot Topics. We will have more opening each day, more created as soon as we feel that there is a topic to discuss. They won’t exclusively be created from existing threads.

The moderators will also be far more protective of the discussion within these Hot Topic threads. They will be kept on topic and existing Hot Topics will not be used to open new discussions. You will see the moderators steering and perhaps removing comments more often to keep with this policy.

The community will carry on creating threads that get flagged as Hot Topics in the traditional way – by posting and starting a discussion in the article thread.

However, we may even look at the concept of creating a new level of permission to some community members which enable them to create Hot Topics directly from the Hot Topic page.

This will then create a hybrid of a comments system and old style forum, allowing users to interact with the full conversations of the day, or just navigate straight to the key topics currently being discussed.

In this way, users who want to avoid the pre-season Rate My Team chatter, can circumvent this while continuing to contribute to the key discussions.

We hope you can see the same potential in this development and, from this point on, we will look to you to help steer how it progresses.

We’ve started one of those Hot Topic things to kick things off, gathering your feedback and ideas on the above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    So a few things.

Obviously views on some of the ideas above.

Also, where should we add the link to this page? In the menubar? On a new Community page?

What do we think about granting permissions to some users to create HT's direct?

What other features would you like to see considered?

Maybe adding a counter for how many comments have gone so far on each topic- to see how 'hot' each one is?

      Great addition.

I think a link on the menu bar would be the best place for it.

HTs should remain at the discretion of the Admins. Otherwise it'll get out of hand where people will make their own comment a HT to get increased visibility.

Maybe add a search function to allow users to quickly find a hot topic using key words?

I don't know if this helps, but if you click on the number of comments on an article, rather than the article itself, it takes you straight to the top of the comments.

Personally I'd definitely like to be able to search, sort and filter the hot topics library to make it easier to find what you're looking for - this is a great start though and the vision being put forward about different ways to view/comment on the hot topics should really make a sizeable difference to how we're able to interact with the site.

Love this.. think this will get a lot of us to contribute more, especially those who only get a chance to access the internet sporadically /at night.

      Menubar.

On permission to create HTs: select few posting with regularity, everybody else perhaps suggesting HT's that go to mod for screening. Don't want too many/ duplicate HT's

The website needs a notifications tab so you can see if there has been a response to your comment.

Notifications by email just makes things cumbersome and takes you away from the website.

Sounds great. Looking forward to seeing it in operation. Obviously a few creases will need ironing out but that will all come with time.

I quite like how FPL posts in Reddit are sorted. The thing with circumnavigating the RMT posts is that they may be neglected altogether as people choose not to to look at them and subsequently people will stop helping others.

However sorting Hot Topics such as the latest Coleman to ?? Having a designating place to post arguments for and against a certain replacements would be excellent. We won't have the same Coleman to ?? comment on every page, instead all the relevant information will be easily found on one thread.

Likewise, any injury to a popular player such as Kane, all new information sourced can simply be posted to this thread allowing users to stay upto date through one easy to access thread.

      Great job.

I suggest that one can search for a HT, by keywords or by category. So every HT will have a number of categories bound to them and then I can search for a HT having category for example Double GWs. All relevant HTs having one of the categories set to Double GWs will be shown in the search results, with the most recent on top.

I think it will be fine in the menubar.

Regarding granting permission to users to create HTs I don't agree. HTs must be interesting and 'hot' discussions. Quality over quantity.

      Keep it up.

A button on every post, that any member can click (much like upvote). if say 3 people click the button then that post is deleted and the user directed to the relevant hot topic.

i.e. when we get a week where say the question is repeated again and again e.g. "Should I do Coleman to Valencia" whenever someone posts that question the community can click the button that flags that there is already a hot topic on this subject and the post is deleted/hidden when it gets to say 3 clicks. The post might turn say very light green on first and second click so that the user knows the "this looks like a hot topic" button has been clicked.

I think this is a great addition, and I believe it is something that's been missing ever since Hot Topics were first introduced. One of my main issues with Hot Topics the way they used to be was that a great discussion could "disappear" as more comments became hot topics. Even if the discussion was still relevant and active, it would get pushed down the Hot Topic list and eventually harder to find.

I believe this is a step in the right direction, a way to focus even more on the user-driven discussions, which after all is what makes FFS unique compared to other fantasy-related-sites and their articles.

Suggestion: Could there be a way to sort and/or filter the Hot Topics? Sort by most replies, sort by most recent comment, filter out hot topics older than x days etc.? Perhaps even a way to bookmark "My favourite hot topics"?

      Some initial ideas:

      1) A daily wrap-up HT giving the price changes, injury news, most discussed items, new articles etc all in one post each day.

      2) HTs have a new shiny home, but articles are still living in the shed - are they going to get a similar new page soon?

      3) Can HTs be removed when they become irrelevant (e.g. GW28 captaincy thread no longer relevant)

Number 3 is something that could be doable.

For example if there's a HT done for Friday press conferences I usually de-HT the Thurs one if I remember.

Love this idea, hot topics are probably the way I get most of my information from this site.

Only thing I'd like to suggest would be for the volume of hot topics to increase daily, plenty of interesting discussions go on daily which are sometimes ignored which could further help fellow managers.

Menubar for sure. No need to have HOF there except for the handful of us in the Deadzone last night who had too much international break time on our hands.

Another thing you might want to do is sift through the Scoutcast questions that don't make the show and have a Mods/Editors choice Hot Topic of other points your crew think are worth discussing. Kind of like a bookstore where the owner picks the majority of the books for sale but the staff all get to weigh in with their favorites. I am always struck by how many Qs you guys get every week.

I don't think there's a necessity for the summary of the hot topic. Just the heading, by who submitted it, the time submitted and number of replies will do. This will condense the hot topics so one can scroll quicker through them.

      Link in the menu bar.

I think ye should allow frequent posters to create their own hot topics. It'll save ye doing it, plus they'll only be on current subjects anyway. Plus more hot topics to peruse!

The one thing I'd like to make sure is in this is that the hot topics that the users care about become hot topics.

I like the moderators hot topics and generally they get them spot on but maybe, somehow, having a way for users to suggest/vote for hot topics? There are obvious problems, and I'm really not sure how this would work.

Only had a quick look around but definitely seems an improvement. I tend to only read and comment on the HTs now anyway as its too time consuming to engage with the rest of the forum. This will promote more HT discussion making it easier to separate the wheat from the chaff.

In terms of other improvements I 100% endorse the idea raised earlier of having an in-site notification system attached to your profile that flags replied to your comments so you know they have happened and can find them easily.

Perhaps add a 'search bar' to find key words?

So you're not just able to look at a hot topic, but a key word within the post or replies.

The ability to be notified of replies on FFS is crucial. Discussion on hot topics is on the slow side so it'd be nice to know if anyone replies. That way engagement with hot topics can last longer.

Thoughts on Vardy or Mahrez for the next 2 GWs? Considering we would most likely have to drop a player like Aguero or Mané to get there.

For those still holding their Triple Captain chip, when is the best time to play it?

With most playing Bench Boost in GW37 are we now limited to Ibrahimovic in GW34, Sanchez in GW35/36, or playing it on a Single Gameweek player and hoping for the best (eg Aguero/Alexis home banker?)

      1. Would you consider doubling up on Boro defensive options for DGW34 instead of investing in United defence, as rotation seems inevitable for them? Boro also have the best fixtures in that DGW.

      2. Would you consider Alonso for the armband this week?

Is Ibrahimovic really 'essential' in week 34?
In the reverse of the fixtures (both at home) he scored a total of 7 points.
In his last 5 games - Stoke, Hull, Leicester, Watford & Bournemouth he scored a total of 1 goal and got 1 assist.
Also Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs all have good fixtures that week, meaning that people shouldn't lose Lukaku, Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen or Mane.

      Is Valencia a trap?

Ibra straight in for the Everton game?

What players who don't have a double should we be holding?

Is Barnes the best bench fodder of them all? Compared to the likes of DeRoon and Co. He plays Bournemouth in GW37 which is pretty tasty for those BB'ing.

Captaincy for this week? Valencia was mentioned in the article, I was shocked you gave him a whole 2 paragraphs and he was the first player mentioned after you gave the cons on captaining Hazard, Pedro, Costa, Lukaku, Pool Mids, City players, Sanchez and Spurs mids. Surely Alonso should have been the player mentioned over Valencia. So, is Alonso a decent shout this weekend? Better chance at scoring and keeping a cleanie than Valencia has.

Is BB in 37 really the right move? A 15-man team in 37 might make it impossible to afford some of the biggest hitters (or, if you do afford them, then the bench becomes dross). In GW34, however, the DGWers are not expensive, and best non-DGW players have excellent fixtures. Might a BB in 34 net more points than a BB of cheapo DGWers in 37?

    27. AndyCook
        7 years, 29 days ago

With all the big teams playing doubles in 37 and strong fixtures for most of the big teams in 34/35 is there any merit to playing your bench boost in 34 or 35 with a bench of Boro/Southampton players and then getting a strong 11 with some bench fodder in 37 and using that week for TC?

        1. Going forward, what to do of the WBA defenders? I have both McAuley and Brunt. So, which of the two for long term?
        2. Where does Coleman's departure leave Everton as a defensive unit? Keep Baines just because he's on pens or bring Bertrand in just because of a DGW?
        3. Will Lukaku be given penalty duties as the race for Golden Boot tightens further diminishing Baines' appeal?
        4. Sanchez essential from GW 31 (if not right now)?

In the Top 5 Career Hall of Fame community article, I noted there is an almost linear (positive) relationship between number of hits taken and number of points gained (after hits). Given the current community consensus is to be relatively conservative with taking hits, is it time to reassess that view?

For those with currently no Man Utd / Boro players would you rather:

DDG / Gibson or Valdes / Valencia

Also if the answer is the former, whilst I wouldnt usually encourage anybody to take a hit for a GK is Foster to DDG for a hit worth it this week ? It seems such a good opportunity to do it.

Is this the time of year where we discard the so called safe from relegation teams players and focus on the bottom table scrappers and top table hopers? I know it's far from certain for most teams but some only needs aocuple points and there pretty much safe.

        1. Does Valencia's rotation risk negate his double gameweek appeal?

        2. In the post gameweek 28 landscape who are the key priorities? Walker? Ibra? Sanchez?

        3. As the big hitters become desirable should we flush cash from defence to favour mids and forwards?

        4. Is a Spurs triple up essential with their fixtures? If so which three?

        5. Are we in danger of double gameweek fever again for gameweek 34? Are Palace and Boro assets really advisable, or even over Worked Man Utd assets?

        6. When to wildcard?

        7. What are the scoutcasters' favourite tipples? My guesses:

        Mark = red red wine,
        Granville = a dark ale,
        Jonty = Coors light,

I am purposely avoiding the Valencia bandwagon. For me, Bertrand is a great shout and in great form. Let's not forget just how lucky Valencia was to get that goal and still didn't manage the clean sheet

High risk of rotation, even for Valencia. I actually don't fancy the Soton defence either without VVD

This. Has swayed me toward Valencia. Plus if I get Valencia now he will stay (barring injury) until the end of the season - worth getting at 5.8 before the herd moves in, he'll def get to 6+ later on, and those precious 0.2 could mean missing out on other players come wildcard (35 for me I think)

WBA scored 3 against Arsenal. United conceded to Middlesbrough, a team who hadn't scored in four games prior.

Posted as a Scoutcast question but I'll put it here as well....

Yes, his record/form isn't great, but i think for most it's the fear of not owning him. I can get all those players you mention and still own Ibra. If you don't get Ibra, then who do you get? Palace and Boro assets aren't enticing. Valencia might not play both games, and the United midfield is a rotation nightmare. Ibra is the only sure thing, a comfort blanket and every man and his dog will own him, that week.

Valdes will be my only DGWer.

          Valdes (bou & SUN)
Koscielny (LEI), Walker (cpl), Alonso (SOU)
Sanchez (LEI) C, Mane (CPL), Alli (cpl), Eriksen (cpl), Mane (MID)
          Lukaku (whm), Llorente (STO)

          (Grant, Baines, Bertrand, Barnes)

i think that team has the potential to score well week 34 despite the lack of DGWers.

I don't plan on having any United for week 34, I agree that it's quite high risk with regards to ownership but every week I just put out the team that I think will score the best.
I see Ibra as overpriced and I'd rather keep the players that I listed in my post above. I also prefer Bertrand to Valencia due to fixtures and he rotates better with my other defenders.

GW34 you have to remember Ibra will playing against Burnley & Pep.

He will be looking to embarrass Pep, hence why everyone wants him, huge factor to consider!

Also the 8 Games prior to what you mentioned - he scored 8 and assisted 4.

Statistics can be used to back up whatever you like, I cherry picked the ones to support my argument.
Yes he did do rather well - guess at which point i got him in my team...
Obviously he has the potential to do well and getting him in is the safe option, I'm just offering an alternative view.
I will not be getting him whilst Sanchez and Lukaku are fit (unless he starts getting 3 goals a week).

Ibra's stats are strong all season. He'll want to push for golden boot and I don't want to miss out if he starts converting more shots

I have cash in the bank from selling for Costa so will make the switch back again next week. Stops me from doing Brunt>Valencia this week but I can play Mawson instead. I've had Ibra most of the season so for me personally not having him for a DGW is potentially suicidal!

Keeping big Rom alongside until Kane is back.

I don't think he's essential and I won't be going out of my way to sign up him for the double gameweek. Assuming he's back fit by gw34, I might give Paul Pogba a punt (try saying that three times fast!). I feel like everyone else is a rotation risk though (even De Gea and Zlatan).

If everything that happened in the first half of the season were to happen in the exact same manner in the second half of the season, this game would be fairly simple..

I'd have him in my squad easily. He has 2 DGWs coming up in GW34 and GW37. That's 2 extra games. Also, I'd bank on a player playing twice in a week cause naturally, he'll have more of a chance to score more points than other SGWers. Of course there may be a player that might outscore him, but no one knows who will.

When wildcarding, do you still get the prices rises as normal? Or are prices frozen so the market can't be played for potential profit on say 0.2 risers?

In a situation where I want to go
Vardy, Deeney -> Ibra, Negredo in two weeks and only have the exact money.

Assuming Ibra will rise, but hoping Vardy and Deeney go up in value too, even before the weekend.

You can utilise a wildcard to take advantage of price rises/falls... I believe wildcarders just dont contribute or contribute less to the price movement of players. (although I'm not 100% on this).

Thanks, I'm aware wildcard transfers don't contribute to price but I might try to make a bit of money this week then in that case! Thanks 🙂

Who's nailed in the Boro defence? Thinking of going for one of them as a Coleman replacement. Don't particularly want Valencia/Bertrand. Might get Rose later when he's fit

Don't double on Spurs defence. Maybe Caballero over Hennessy. Would rather Barnes as a bench fodder and have a 7m mid instead of Capoue

A few questions on my mind currently:

      1) Are Ibra and Sanchez going to be essential to bring in? If we had to go with one, who would we go with? I'm a little concerned about dropping Mane for Sanchez given Liverpool's run of fixtures this weekend

      2) Is it worth bringing Vardy for the next two game weeks against Stoke and Sunderland?

      3) Any idea when we can expect the remaining double GWs to be announced? I still have my wild card, but would rather play 2/3 weeks ahead of 37 to get full value out of it, rather than just in 36.

        1. Wont say essential but they can do well in coming weeks. Ownership wise, yes they will be highly owned. Points wise, I'm not sure if Ibra will be able to justify his price tag.

        2. Can work. Its a punt afterall!

        3. Final announcement was expected to be made by GW32 I guess

      2. @fpl_phenom

1)I think both are essential and must be got by GW34. Mane and Probably Costa will be sacrificed. Don't know when to WC myself to be honest, probly gw31 to bring both in and get dgw players.

        1) Sanchez yes, Ibra maybe. Liverpool's fixture list doesn't seem to have any bearing on how they perform

        2) Yes, definitely

        3) dunno 😀
