Dugout Discussion – Arsenal vs Man City

After Gylfi Sigurdsson disappointed during Swansea’s goalless draw with Middlesbrough at the Liberty, Gameweek 30 comes to its conclusion with the small matter of a 4pm showdown between Arsenal and Man City at the Emirates Stadium.

Two of the top five captained players in this round of fixtures go head-to-head now, with Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez handed the armband by 8.8% and 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers respectively.

Sanchez, certainly, is the most reliable of the pair, serving up a goal or assist in 13 of his last 15 league outings to clinch a place at the top of the FPL leaderboard.

Aguero has upped his output in recent weeks, though, with two goals and an assist in his previous four appearances.

Up against a defence that’s been breached three times in three of their last four league fixtures, the Argentine goes in search of a fifth double-figure away haul.

With Arsenal playing ten times in the remaining eight Gameweeks and City boasting nine fixtures over that stretch, the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck also have a chance to impress, with the latter handed a third straight start by Arsene Wenger.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not enough to do Mané and Lukaku to Sanchez and Vardy.

How about Mané, King and Lukaku to Sanchez, Zaha and Vardy for 4 pt hit?

            Not necessarily.

Not sure he's going to do much now without Coleman.

Those wondering why Navas earned a high BPS

He won 8 tackles, 3 more than any other player in Gameweek 30. He also made 3 open play crosses and 3 key passes but the tackles were the big factor.

Silva MOTM in the Mirror, 0 BAPs. Navas 'started poorly in defence' - 3

No system actually can be flawless, because reality is a continuum, and human culture merely interprets it and puts it into categories (in football we have categories like "tackle" and so on)...

Take colors for instance, which are different wavelengths of light, and there's a continuum of different wavelengths of light, so there are millions and millions of different colors in reality.... It's human beings who then have put that endless information into a few categories, such as green, and yellow, and blue, and so on... 🙂

If tackles are a big factor it's surprising Kante doesn't get bonus every week 🙂

No in all seriousness I like a stat based game but the FPL BPS system all seems a little off. I used to play the Metro game that was very stat based and it all seemed to relate. You could watch a game then view the points and it would all seem to reflect what actually happened. I don't get that with FPL bonus - i'm surprised by some bonus points almost every week.

Oh right I thought it was something I said. Yeah, as above, I actually think there is something a little off with the FPL bonus. Watching that game I doubt anyone would have called Navas for 3 bonus points.

I'm personaly very happy with BP sysem.

Yes, things like this Kun/Navas situation are not fair imo, but at least when you start the game the rules are very clear, players get bouns pts for doing certain things on the pitch that are cleary stated in the rules.

Any other system that is not objective like man in the stand would only bring much more arguing.

There is a huge difference between humanly conception of the world, structuralism, putting things into categories, classifying things, and the real world, which is continuous... The rules are clear, but there are people counting the "certain things", hence people are classifying this tackle as lost, and that tackle as won... Whereas in the real world tackles are very very different from one another...

So am I alone in saying i'm surprised Aguero even got one bonus point? I thought there were at least 3 more players on the pitch that performed better than him.

Fair enough but I guarantee that Navas would not be in anyone's top 10 if judging man of the match

Agreed with this, beside the goal not much else he did beside missing few chances, City mids looked good and deserved BP imo

Navas was awful at defending, had some awful tackles as well and deservedly got a yellow card for one of them too... So is that not taken into account then? Should be won tackles minus lost/horrible tackles, or something... You cannot argue that Navas had a great game and was man of the match (which the 3 bonus kind of means) simply by stating the amount of successful tackles he made... And you cannot compare different tackles, as some are easier than others.... Navas had a lackluster game and him getting 3 bonus is beyond ridiculous...

Sanchez was better, Mustafi was better, Sane was better, Aguero was better, Monreal was better, at least...

According to the scoring page it is net tackles. Seems crazy still I know but apparently that's what it is.

So how many he got then? Mark just said he got 8 won tackles, so that's not the net tackles yet... Also, if the system just rewards crosses from open play, does it not take into account where the cross ends up? Even if it goes out for a goal kick?

Look at the rules page and scoring. It does state successful crosses. I'm guessing Mark is quoting the Opta stat for Navas's crosses.

Maybe he meant 3 successful crosses then... But a successful cross is anything but a clearly defined things... Also, sometime you might get a successful cross if another player gets a header in out of it, say, but then again it could have been better to just pass to someone else instead who was in a more threatening goal scoring position, so a player might be rewarded by the BPS system yet people think he made the wrong choice...

Yep I agree with that. They should change it to successful pass in the final third if they want to award that sort of thing.

Fair enough, but to be honest it just highlights the fact that awarding bonus is largely pointless and a highly contentious issue. Stick to awarding points for assists, goals and cleansheets etc

Seeing as thats not going to happen i think re-balancing the bps structure to perhaps lessen events such as this might be wise.

Whilst we're at it, perhaps we could look at rewarding 45 minute cleansheets. Like say 1 point for first 45 minute and 3 for the second half if kept. 🙂

Just to add to this. Opta stats - used for the BPS - show Navas 9 attempted tackles, 8 successful. He also supplied 3 successful cross and 3 key passes. In short, he was a stats monster in BPS terms.

It's an outlier - if those were Bellerin's numbers, we'd be lauding him - because it's Navas, we right them off as farcical. But those stats are Opta - you can't really question them and the BPS is transparent on how those Opta numbers translate to BPS and therefore Bonus Points.

Every now and then we'll see this - a player who just delivers on the sweet spot for BPS. That doesn't mean we throw out the whole system.

For me, its better we know how Bonus is allocated so we - as more hardcore managers - can try to select to that system. If we go back to man in the stand, we're at the mercy of an individuals' view and sometimes their own favourites.

Some folk might remember that Barry Ferguson used to hoover up Bonus Points - it turned out that the man in the stand at Birmingham - who was on Press staff - was actually a distant relative and therefore was fixating on his performance week in week out. We surely don't want to go back to that.

I think the BPS can be refined further. Two things in my view - tackles are too strong and, when we get a big number, it throws out an outlier. Second, the penalty for being tackled is too strong, killing players like Costa who are losing possession purely through their role on the pitch.

Subtle changes there will correct another 25% of the outliers and then we're be a bit more content.

As Garg rightly says, above, though. We will never have a perfect system and we will always have these controversies now and again.

But I'd rather have controversy and actually understand why the bonus was awarded - which is what we have with Navas. We might not agree with the outcome of the BPS formula in this case but at least we know how it got to its conclusion. We would never have any explanation on a man in the stand judgement. For me, that would be far more frustrating.

navas was the worst player on the pitch, no goal or. assist, gets a yellow, and at half time when toure came on, everyone thought it would be for navas, bad tackles, poor passing/crossing
but if this is how bonus pts are rewarded, then we all have to except it, whether we agree or not, football/fpl after all creates opions/discussions etc, good luck all

always get frustrated when i read player x didnt even score or assist and yet got bonus as then it becomes just an award for forward players for doing their jobs. navas' job at right back is surely not to score goals (thank god!), maybe get the odd assist yes but that's an odd assist, far less of a creative burden than an actual playmaker, let's say silva in their case. i think it's fair to say a right back's job is more exactly what he got bonus for in this case, winning the ball back/stopping the winger and getting up the pitch to get some of his own crosses in.

i like this system as it doesn't care about reputation or narratives going into the match. a hugely unpopular player can have a statistically impressive game and get rewarded. then at the other end of the scale a popular player can not be rewarded due to a hugely wasteful game. alexis for example looked like a jetlagged mess in the match, so many heavy touches, losing possession cheaply etc. but, you can bet if he scored a late penalty there would have been cries for the 3bps.

this was the perfect storm of unpopular player (a bit of a joke figure, always remember a tweet which said i bet the rest of the man city squad have a whatsapp group called navas) meets hugely owned player fpl wise. the less obvious perfect storm was navas got to mark alexis who is so uniquely relentless and direct that on a day like that when the co-ordination/sharpness was slightly fuzzy he was basically donating 2bps to navas every other attack.

where are the cries for sane's bonus? or walcott's? (how can you not agree with garg's point). and here's an irony, one of the reasons aguero got so close to the 3 bonus was tackles!

Well and a YC.. Must agree though BPS system is really good and does reward the right players 99.5% of the time.. When the 0.5% happens to a popular pick ppl start kicking off..

I don't think there is an issue here at all. The bonus point system is not a rating system for how well a player is perceived to have performed, it is simply a mechanism for objectively allocating points for certain events that happen on the pitch.

Some players are 'bps magnets' but may not play particularly well.

Having an objective manner of assessing bonus points removes any subjectiveness in the matter.

The bonus point system may not be perfect at the moment, but it is transparent, quantifiable, fair to all and is there to be used to our advantage

building on my momentum and using a mini wildcard, transfers done.
Mane, Baines and King to Sanchez, Holgate and Zaha.

Don't mind doing a -4 for zaha as king has awful fix id have got zaha in for a hit for the double probably anyway.

Navas deserved the BAPS in this system. Lots of passes, lots of tackles / interceptions, lots of runs. The BAPS system rewards effort without mistakes - not outcomes. Otherwise players who got goals, clean sheets and assists would clean up all the time.
