Top 5 Career Hall of Fame – Gameweek 31 Review

Gameweek 31 was a mixed week for our elite quintet in the career Hall of Fame (HoF). Ville Ronka and Peter Kouwenberg both suffered for having captained Arsenal’s usually explosive Chilean Alexis Sanchez, and saw small red arrows as a result.

Yet there were season-high FPL ranks for number four Steve Poulsom, who finally broke into the top 100K, and number five David Meechan, who moved up to 4,767 in the FPL rankings.

However, the two big headlines of the week are – Marlen Rattiner decided to use his Wildcard in Gameweek 31, and we have a new Live Hall of Fame leader.

Huge congratulations to Peter on becoming the number one Fantasy Football manager for the first time ever. A regular poster to the comments section of this article as MyPrettyPony, Peter’s willingness to share his thoughts and opinions is immensely helpful to all.

This article focuses on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of this site’s career Hall of Fame. Members can see the latest top five via our Live Hall of Fame update.

To help out I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

David continues to benefit from the Wildcard he played in Gameweek 30, he was for the second week running the highest scoring manager out of the Top Five. This is despite only getting 6 points from his captain pick. His high score this week was aided by Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, and a very welcome 11 points from Southampton defender Maya Yoshida.

CAPTAIN

Three of the Top Five HoF managers went for Sanchez and for once he let them down. Instead going against the majority paid off for both Steve and Marlen, who picked Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic respectively.

Over the season Sanchez has been picked as captain 32% of the time, averaging 14.4pts when chosen. Aguero follows in popularity having been handed the armband 26% of the time, averaging 15.9pts as captain or triple captain, with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku chosen 11% of the time averaging a mighty 21.8pts.

In graphic below I’ve displayed this information for the five most popular captain picks. It shows that Lukaku has handsomely returned the faith placed in him when chosen as captain. You could argue that the trolls on this graphic are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and United’s Ibrahimovic. They have not performed as well as expected on the few occasions that they have been chosen as captains, averaging 11.4 and 12.8 points respectively.

Despite the low return from Sanchez, Peter remains the best performing manager out of the Top Five in his ability to pick the right captain. Peter also leads the way in immediate transfer success however the difference is less pronounced (see ‘Transfer Success’ section).

The popular transfer was the expected transfer – Mané out, Sanchez in. Only Steve decided to bench Mané and instead swapped Swansea’s injured Fernando Llorente for Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. A wise move as it turned out.

MARLEN’S WILDCARD

Players OutGrant, Amat, Brunt, Son, King, Mané, Snodgrass, Lukaku, Aguero, Llorente
RemainersPickford, Mawson, McAuley, Valencia, Sanchez

Marlen made the bold move of using his Wildcard to remove Aguero, Lukaku and Llorente, which for this Gameweek reads like a fairly fearsome front three. Instead he brought in the in-form Jamie Vardy, Christian Benteke and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. How relieved he must have been at Zlatan’s last minute penalty!

Sanchez remained in his team and was joined by Dele Alli of Spurs and Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool. Both players provided instant rewards.

Interestingly in goal both David last week and Marlen this week opted for Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdés. No doubt they will be hoping for more than nil points from his Double Gameweek 34 fixtures against Bournemouth and Sunderland.

In picking Benteke and teammate Wilfried Zaha, Marlen is going for form over fixtures. Perhaps anticipating an end of season run from Palace to match the great escapes of Leicester, Sunderland, and Wigan in recent seasons. Big Sam has never been relegated from the Premier League.

Marlen benefited from his Wildcard by gaining a Gameweek high of 28 points. Of those not to use their Wildcard Steve’s transfer and decision to captain the Foxes’ in-form Jamie Vardy brought him 18 points.

Over the course of the season Peter has mustered more immediate transfer points than any of his fellow bosses at the HoF’s top table.

As ever the new Live HoF number one was kind enough to share his transfer plans ahead of the deadline. If you’d followed his advice since I started tracking the crème de la crème of the fantasy football world, you’d be in pretty good shape. Thank you Peter!

The contrasting way the game can be played is highlighted in the table above. Perhaps surprisingly the number of transfers made does not appear to be a significant factor in determining success. If anything Peter’s 84 points in hits compares favourably to Ville’s paltry 8 points, given that he has amassed over 50 points more than the Finn based on immediate transfer success.

FORMATION

The standard 3-4-3 was again popular this week with three managers choosing this formation. However David, who chose 3-5-2, scored the highest weekly score. He averages 62.6 points with this formation over the course of season, more than any manager who has preferred 3-4-3.

In the 2016/17 season 3-4-3 has been favoured 57% of the time by the career HoF Top Five, with 3-5-2 second with 22%. 4-4-2 is the third most popular on 11%.

As expected the injured Saido Mané dropped out of the template for GW31, replaced by Alexis Sanchez. However after a disappointing return against West Ham his place in the template must be under threat given his expensive price tag. With fellow premium players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero staking a claim for a place in our teams, our limited budgets are coming under pressure. Will the Chilean hold onto his place?

Yes a little rushed, links and graphics to be back in next week!

Marlen's use of his WC is fascinating, getting rid of Aguero and Lukaku very brave.

I was very close to Wildcarding this week, then absolutely I would do it next week, but actually with another -4 I can get Kane in and the team will look OK. I'm going to end up just taking -4 for the rest of the season and not use my WC...

I knee jerked Aguero and Haz in for Costa and Sanchez. Any of those 4 could nail it this week, but on paper the first pair is worth the -4. Like many, I'll also have Lukaku and triple Spurs so it's all coming together nicely for a shock low scoring gameweek...

My main issue is bench order for Brunt and King, given that Carroll and/or Cout may not play. Oh, and who to captain of course.

Brunt and King is a tricky one, I feel Chelsea will go for the win given that Spurs are applying a little pressure, which may lead to a more open game. But then Chelsea did look defensively very strong in the second half against City, after bringing on Matic, so chances could well be limited. Tough call.

      Got to be Aguero captain?

I think a possible appearance by Kane reduces Alli as an option. But Lukaku could do well...

    WC dilemmas!

    Pickford, Hennessey/Valdes
    Valencia, Yoshida,
    Alli, Eriksen, Sané
    Aguero, Lukaku

    with?
    (3-5-2 with Hazard)
    A) Hazard, King, (Anichebe), Alonso, Baines, Chambers/Kone - 0.4 ITB
    B) Hazard, Siggy, (Anichebe), Mawson, Chambers/Kone - 1.5 ITB

    (3-4-3 with Ibra)
    C) Ibra, Siggy, (JWP), Olsson, Holgate, Chambers/Kone - 0.1 ITB
    D) Ibra, King, (JWP), Davies, Mawson, Chambers/Kone - 1.0 ITB

    E) Ibra, Siggy, (de Roon), Davies, Mawson, Holgate - 0.0 ITB
    F) Ibra, Siggy, (de Roon), Gibson, Olsson, Holgate - 0.1 ITB

So the main question - Hazard or Ibra?

Chambers or Kone? - will any Middlesbrough defender ever be fit again?! Sunderland have good fixtures from GW33 and Kone is an option I feel. David Meechan put him in his WC team so there must be something about him.

I think option A) looks pretty solid but I do feel with Ibra, Kane, Aguero, and Lukaku all tussling for places in our teams, 3-4-3 might be the way to go. The easy move next week is Aguero + Alli > Kane + Hazard.

Only getting Aguero for a week seems fairly mad though. If I go with option F) I could also do Ibra > Kane next week and then get Ibra & Hazard in GW34 after the United/Chelsea match.

    Thoughts appreciated!

    Thank you 🙂

No question Ibra can smash it this week and if it's just this week before getting Kane in I'd go for an Ibra and King pairing.

Problem is, this week there really are so many great options from the top clubs. Could be quite a few double digit players if games go to form.

I despair of Boro defenders, though Chambers wouldn't have been in my 11 anyway so hasn't cost me. Sunderland fixtures do look great, just not Sunderland!

Thank you 🙂 I'd sort of moved away from King in favour of Siggy, partly because of Bournemouth's next two fixtures, however GW34 onwards it's got to be King. In the last four matches King has 4 goals and Siggy none. I wonder if I might go Siggy now then get King after Spurs away... Siggy currently tops my "Next TopMarx Men" table (similar to Jonty's Goals Imminent) http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/8149/

"Perhaps surprisingly the number of transfers made does not appear to be a significant factor in determining success."

For me, the figures appear to suggest that this season taking a FEW extra hits (but still less than one per gameweek) has paid off in immediate points gained:

Peter: total points hits 84, total immediate points gained after deducting points hits 226
Steve: total points hits 64, total immediate points gained after deducting points hits 215
Average: total points hits 50, total immediate points gained after deducting points hits 199
Ville: total points hits 8, total immediate points gained after deducting points hits 163

There appears to be little correlation however between immediate points gained and total FPL points after GW31, apart from Peter coming out top in both:

Peter: immediate gain 226, total points 1814
Steve: immediate gain 215, total points 1678
Marlen: immediate gain 202, total points1701
Dave: immediate gain 188, total points 1783
Ville: immediate gain 163, total points 1750.

Yes over the last couple of weeks Ville has slipped back a bit on immediate points gained from transfers, but it was closer before. Two weeks ago he got a zero from Valencia scoring the same as McAuley and Sanchez only got 3 points last week. Also Marlen and David have both improved their tally recently thanks to using their Wildcards. So I expect Ville to bridge the gap when he uses his.

But you are right I should make all this clearer. It also suffers from the fact that Ville is really unique in this group, in taking so few hits. A sample of one isn't great. Marlen on 40 points in hits is much closer to Peter, though as I mentioned he has played his Wildcard.

You will find exceptions too - there are managers with good captain points totals and good immediate points gained from transfers who do not rank as highly as these five. So clearly other measures are needed.

However I do think it is interesting that the two guys vying for the top spots in the overall FPL ranks have done exceptionally well on their captain picks, and fairly average on immediate points gained from transfers. Leading me to think that the captain decision is more important that transfers (though obviously you may need to transfer in a captain selection in).

Yes, playing wildcards and other major chips should increase both the immediate points gained and the total points compared with others who have not yet played them.

And the longer term effects of a transfer might often be more important than the immediate points gained - but they are not as easy to measure.

It is interesting to examine the similarities and differences in the way they play, but we know they are all top players, and a single season is probably too short a time to judge which of the differences are likely to be more successful over a longer period.

As you say, there is no clear evidence here that the number of transfers made is a significant factor in determining the relative success between these top players. Peter has probably taken more hits this season than most top players, and it is a rather different style of play to that of Ville Ronka, but it does show that there is more than one way to be successful at this game.

One thought I have on this season looking at the top five - and I would love to know how it compared with other seasons - it doesn't seem to have been one for patience. In particular players who haven't been doing well in terms of points returns, yet demonstrate good underlying stats. Firmino has been in Steve's team for a long time without fully justifying his faith, Coutinho and Mané have been the better choices. Benteke was in Ville's side for over half the season and didn't deliver on his potential. Sigurdsson at the moment isn't turning good stats into points.

Making the right judgement call on when to keep an under performing player who is about to turn a corner and when to look for value elsewhere is a crucial part of the game.

I am very interested to see how Sanchez gets on this week, because he has under performed recently (and actually doesn't have the stats to show he's been unlucky). Peter was quick to sell him for Hazard, so Sanchez has to score 10 or more otherwise Peter will be adding to his immediate points gained tally. It could be that Peter's style of play is suited to doing well in immediate points gained from transfers.

The normal method for making transfers is to consider not only short term gain but medium to long term potential. We don't like to buy a player and ditch them immediately unless they are injured. So, whether it works out or not, Peter selling Sanchez one week after buying him shows a strength of mind different to most. Most players I think would rather give Sanchez another chance. Perhaps something like the "class is permanent, form is temporary" argument can be used as justification. And they might be right! We find out on Monday.

It has been another bad week for Ville in his transfer dealings. Having held on to Snodgrass for a while, he ditched him for Sigurdsson. Only for Snoddy to out score Siggy.

Whatever the underlying reasons, Peter is making better calls than Ville at the moment. You could also argue Peter is more flexible in his formations and captain choices than Ville. The season isn't over yet by any means, and all could change, but so far a more dynamic approach has paid off.

Interesting stuff. I don't have exact details, but I can absolutely confirm that this is the first season I've been hit crazy.

Both my last two (three digit finish) seasons were much more cautious affairs - I think in one of those I'd taken one hit in the first half of the season or something. I have been far less patient this season but it generally seems to have worked out.

I wouldn't advocate that as a general rule and would stand by my previous view that hits are often a sign of poor planning or impatience (e.g. Sanchez) or just bad luck with injury etc.

Happy to answer any questions on it, but I wouldn't say it's been a deliberate strategy at all.

I just think what defines this season in particular is a more dynamic approach rather than a patient approach. Perhaps this is why Ville and also Marlen aren't doing so well. It's all relative of course, they are still doing well compared to most.

Interesting you say you it is not a deliberate strategy. Perhaps it's just the situation that each gameweek presents, and you adapt accordingly. Maybe in previous seasons you haven't had to change so much. Is there more choice this season compared to last? More players performing well at different times? More points to be won?

I expect the points total will be higher this year.

I think you are good at the Overnight Test, seeing your team without being attached to particular players:

(ignoring the cost of hits for a moment!) - If it was possible for someone to come in and sell all your players overnight. The next morning you wake up and you’re left with 100 percent cash in your account. Here’s the test: you can repurchase the same players at no cost. Would you build the same team? If not what changes would you make? Why aren’t you making them now?

This is basically what it is like playing a Wildcard. It's interesting you say you might not need your Wildcard because, in the way you think about transfers, you've kind of been playing like you use one every week! Just you haven't needed to make dramatic wholesale changes because you've made generally good calls. Perhaps this comes from a sense of not being too attached to particular players?

You are fairly ruthless compared to the other top five managers I think.

Most of my own mistakes this season have been due to a combination of impatience, poor judgement and occasional utter recklessness. This week I took a hit to replace Sanchez and Sterling with Hazard and Alli, since Sanchez appeared to have lost his form, Sterling appeared to have become a huge rotation risk, and Hazard and Alli were both class players in excellent form and with good fixtures. Hazard and Alli both scored today, but then Sterling got two assists - it remains to be seen how well Sanchez does.

Perhaps Ville's patience hasn't worked out quite as well as usual for him so far this season, but even when he makes a mediocre start he somehow always finishes up in the top 5k, and I expect him to do so again this season. He is still has the 3rd highest current ranking of the five you follow, so his patient approach has not completely failed. And I wouldn't be surprised if he is back on top of the Hall of Fame by the end of the season.

Sometimes it's a matter of having the right players in your squad to start with. In the case of the Liverpool midfielders, having the highest scoring one in your squad may be a matter of luck, and it may be a better play to keep the one you have rather than making sideways moves between them. If you are lucky enough to have acquired the season's highest scorers early including the best captain choices and they don't get injured or lose form then your TV should automatically increase and you should be able to maintain a high ranking without having to take many hits. I think a majority of successful FPL managers follow this approach when they can - but there is also a minority who achieve success by playing more aggressively, taking a greater number of hits and risks, and chopping and changing according to fixtures.

Another aspect of patience is waiting till near the end of the gameweek before making transfers. This tends to miss a few price changes and reduce the TV, but it leads to fewer hits being required and fewer players getting transferred in who then get injured later in the gameweek.

As you say, managers usually consider the medium and long term effects when making transfers, so the immediate points gain may not tell the whole story. And as you also say, it is also important to make consistently good captain calls. But it is a combination of a number of different factors, including both luck and skill, that leads to the highest points scores.

I agree with you I think on all points. Ville will certainly improve his rank before the end of the season and I expect a top 5K rank. He does make the rare early transfer though, yet he is patient generally in the low number of transfers he makes (being patient with the players he has).

I certainly agree it is a combination of factors that leads to success.

I don't have Sanchez either so I'll be hoping you made the right moves with those transfers!

You know you're sad when you celebrate Fernandes coming on in the 86th minute for the Hammers just because it guarantees Coutinho off your bench and not missing out on bench goals for the third week running! Caught a break at last, although maybe I should be learning for this...

Haha! You reach top spot and then catch a break - what hope for the rest of us? 😉 well done, excellent week for you so far. I foolishly put my faith in Sigurdsson instead of King, I'm hoping the balance can be redressed in the next round of fixtures. Also crossing my fingers that Ibra puts Sunderland to the sword tomorrow, otherwise I think I might lose points on my WC. I've managed to take out three goalscorers so far.

Welcome to the fickle lady that is the wildcard. I don't think I've ever scored better than my 'old' team would have the week I've wildcarded.

Your logic on Siggy was sound and, as you say, he could nail it next week.

I certainly hope so, thinking to get King and Coutinho back in for GW34 in my current plans.

I just noticed we are playing the same opponent in the cups - you in the members cup, me in the non-members cup. I think you are safely through, I need something from Ibra tomorrow to get me over the line.

Annoyingly in the members cup my opponent has played his BB chip, which seems a bit unfair. Hope to still be in one cup after this week 🙂

Ah, yeah, I always feel using the chips (except WC) is unfair in cups.

Good luck in yours, although I hope Ibra doesn't go too mad.

Glad to hear I should be through in mine.
