The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 33

With the day billed as a head-to-head between Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, it was the Spurs man who ultimately came out on top – rewarding those who move to adopt him early to maximise his potential as a short-term differential.

The gap was six points – hardly a huge margin but enough to elevate Kane’s status and ensure that he’s currently second only to Zlatan Ibrahimovic – with Manchester United’s two fixtures – for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 34 so far.

In contrast, Lukaku looks destined for an ownership loss as traffic moves to Ibrahimovic: there is already a deficit with only Diego Costa, and Jamie Vardy sold more among forwards at this point.

Selling Lukaku remains a scary prospect – with 12 goals in ten, 13 in his last eight at home – the Everton striker could easily punish the shift to the United man.

He will face a trip to West Ham, while Ibrahimovic squares up to both Burnley and Manchester City away. With a Goodison Park encounter with Chelsea to follow before we shift to Double Gameweek assets, for many Fantasy managers, today will be the final farewell for Lukaku – a player who has been a spectacular servant since the season’s mid-way point.

Kane is heading in the opposite direction.

While the Spurs midfield is awash with consistent options – a fact demonstrated again in today’s win over Bournemouth – Kane is surely now the premium striker of choice.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in irrepressible form, with Kane now back installed as the spearhead to feed off the first-class service provided by Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min in particular.

Kane went into the today’s encounter as part of 590,000 squads, with 251,000 of those owners immediately trusting him with the captaincy.

He was to score and assist for only the third time this season, sealing the maximum bonus to double Lukaku’s six-point tally.

Having delivered on the armband, Fantasy managers are now faced with a dilemma.

Ibrahimovic is clearly being brought in for his two fixtures as the default captaincy option and yet Spurs’ form, even heading into a testing trip to Crystal Palace, is difficult to ignore.

Looking at the past four matches for all sides, Pochettino’s men have scored 13 goals – five more than any other side. They also lead the way for attempts, shots in the box and big chances.

Comparing them directly with United, they’ve recorded 38 shots on target compared to 21 from Jose Mourinho’s side when both sides’ last four matches are considered.

Even if we can be certain that Ibrahimovic will figure in both his Gameweek 34 fixtures, it’s debatable whether he can better Kane’s potential output.

Spurs are seemingly hellbent on maintaining their title challenge, and the striker himself appears focused on closing on Lukaku in the Golden Boot race.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Spurs and Kane have outscored double Gameweek assets and punished those who dare overlook them. In Gameweek 34 last season, they hit four at Stoke City with Kane firing a brace after 200,000 shipped him out.

Nobody will be selling Kane this time around, but it’s the armband decision that looks key.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone got thoughts? Yay or nay?

    Siggy + Lukaku + Llorente - >
King + Ibra + Benteke (-8) and play AOA.

Siggy has played his last game for me. Today was his last chance especially when he had the big man Llorente up front for a change. Hi Townsend.

Yes , that Swansea game in 35 is what is tipping the balance in Ibrahimovic's favour .
But , United are crap offensively and with europa looming , there might be rotation in the double GW .
So confused as what to do ,

              Understandable.

I would get him in instead of Lukaku. Depending on how things go tomorrow maybe? If Liverpool win + United lose = bigger chance of rotation imo.

But I don't think Mourinho can afford to bench Zlatan, when there is a chance of a top 4 spot.

A tough call. Could be a decent week for AOA even though it would mean benching Alonso.

For me it's difficult to choose between King and Eriksen tbh. The form Spurs are in it's difficult to bench him, so I would probably bench King. But close!

29 shots by Everton is a very big number for players who had Lukaku (c) with his level of goal involvement. If I'd known that number before kick off I'd have captained Lukaku for sure.

If you had 3 spurs (attack) then it made sense to spread the risk and have Luk

    Random non-FPL thoughts:
How do you think the hierarchy of the current 7 will shape up in the future? Will it remain a competitive race for CL among them, or will at least a couple of them decline and fall by the wayside like many teams have in the past? (ie. like what has happened to the likes of Inter, Valencia, Shalke, etc)

I think Arsenal at the moment is the most vulnerable to a fall from grace. Chaos among the fans, discontent among several players, uncertain managerial situation, bad owner...

So'ton (A) with +2 points from the ManU game? (because Arsenal are highly unlikely to score against Mourinho, let alone win)
Arsenal's record is pretty s**t at So'ton too. They could easily fail to score there too. Arsenal were very lucky to get away with a win against So'ton earlier this season

    Pickford (Foster)
    Alonso, Williams, Maguire (Holebas, Browning)
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Siggy (Capoue)
    Kane, Lukaku, Carroll

    2 FT 0.1 ITB

Some help here guys? Making some ground up towards the end of the season and keen to keep pushing.

i.) Siggy and Carroll - Zaha and Benteke
ii.) Siggy and Carroll - King and Benteke
iii.) Sanchez and Carroll - King/Zaha and Ibra

Still not decided if I WC GW 35 or 36, already used TC but BB37.

Think GW36 because I have triple ManU and Zaha and would wanna get Arsenal players before GW36 but not against Spurs GW35.

Upside of WC35 is Southampton has Hull so triple could be good.

What do you think? 35 or 36?

Yeah, not sure Valdes could make up for -4 on average. Im playing King and then not comfortable with Valdes. Watford are crap so cs decent chance. Then there is a chance all of them get their normal 2 pointer, then hit doesnt pay either.

Then yes. You (probably) have 3 non-playing defenders in GW34. So even if Gbison doesn't get any returns, he will get 2+2, which will cover the hit.

  23. Rest advantage over gwk 34/35
    Ramboros

    7 years, 11 days ago

A factor that's very important for maximizing points output for GW34 and GW35 pre-WC, is to take into account how many days of rest the different teams are getting.

Man Utd plays Burnley with only 2 days of rest. City and United will both have 3 days of rest for the derby. United will then again only have 2 days of rest before the Swansea game. City (2) will have 1 less day of rest for GW35 than Middlesbrough (3).

Chelsea plays Southampton with only 2 days of rest in GW34. Southampton will have 3 days of rest before their game against Hull, while Chelsea will have 4 days of rest before the Everton game.

Middlesbrough will have 3 days of rest. Sunderland will have 2 days of rest before the Bournemouth game in GW35.

Arsenal will have 2 days of rest for GW34 against Leicester. Leicester will have 2 days of rest before facing WBA.

Tottenham (3) will have 1 more day of rest than Palace (2) for GW34, and the same amount of rest as Arsenal for GW35. Palace will have 3 days of rest for the Burnley game.

Teams with a heavy GW34 rest advantage: Burnley (mun), Southampton (che), Sunderland (mid)
Teams with a heavy GW35 rest advantage: Bournemouth (sun), WBA (LEI), Hull (sou), Burnley (CPL), Everton (CHE)
FA cup teams with slight rest advantage: Tottenham

I think I like this, but all the (#) references are lost on me. Are you saying that the good teams pretty much have no rest in 34?

      1. Ramboros
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 11 days ago

(#) just indicates the number of days of rest, since the difference between 2 and 3 days of rest is pretty large physically, while the difference between 3 and 4 days of rest is considerably less impactful. It's just a way of showing that 1 day rest advantage will be very impactful in theaw cases.

The key thing to take from this is that fixture congestion benefits one team with a lot of games (Spurs) and some teams with SGWs. It's not enough to look at which teams have congested fixtures and which teams don't.

Chelsea will have a disadvantage for both GW34 and 35. Arsenal will have a major disadvantage for GW35. City will have a minor disadvantage for GW35. Spurs will suprisingly have an advantage for GW34 and overall benefit from fixture congestion.

Man Utd are heavily disadvantaged because they will only have 2 days of rest for the games against Burnley and Swansea, which is where you will expect most of your goals. Both those teams get a full week of preparation.

    3. Pep says

        • 12 Years

It's the full days of rest. It's consistent along the line. There is only one match that doesn't start between 15.00 and 20.00 in GW34 and GW35.

United's games against Burnley and Swansea start respectively at 14.15 and 12.00. That's incredibly early considering these games are following games by United starting at 19.45 and 20.00.
