Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Jamie Vardy’s second-half goal is too little, too late as a spirited Leicester City finally exit the Champions League.

Leicester City 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (Aggregate 1-2)

And then there was one…the Premier League’s European aspirations now rest with Manchester United after Leicester could only draw the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a savvy, if at times rocky, Atletico Madrid.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser provided a measure of hope as the Foxes, easily subdued in the first half, went back to basics after the break and caused a measure of discomfort to the visitors’ backline.

The difference between the sides, in the end, was quality – Atletico controlled large parts of the tie and took the occasional chances that came their way. Leicester were second-best until all that was left was to give it a go. That they did, with impetus gained by a switch to 3-5-2 after half-time, and the Spaniards bent but never broke under the less than subtle onslaught.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare made one change from the first leg. Robert Huth was suspended, so the fit-again Wes Morgan, back after missing five league matches with a back issue, partnered Yohan Benalouane in the centre of the defence.

The Leicester captain’s return should have been welcome news for the 10.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with him in their squads – only Vardy (14.8%) is owned by more.

But Morgan never looked match-fit and succumbed to a hamstring problem in the second half that threatens to put him straight back on the injured list again.

As for Vardy, he remains the talisman of a team reborn under Shakespeare but still lacking consistent returns from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has managed two goals and an assist in the seven league matches since Claudio Ranieri was sacked. Vardy has scored six times and provided three assists over the same period.

That form makes the England striker almost undroppable, although the Foxes’ run-in is a decidedly mixed bag.

They face West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth and have a double Gameweek 37. But that involves Man City away and the visit of a rampant Spurs, while their next match is a trip to an Arsenal side scrapping to keep themselves in the hunt for the Champions League places.

The worry is that, as their place in the Premier League looks safe enough, there will be precious little for the defending champions to play for now their European campaign is finally over.

Shakespeare will know that a strong finish would do wonders for his own ambitions to lead the club on a more permanent basis. Whether that is motivation enough for the players remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Vardy remains the only Leicester asset worthy of consideration but, given the current clamour for the likes of Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Benteke, he has become a casualty of heavy sales.

Vardy lost over 86,000 owners over his past two Gameweeks and has suffered a deficit of 17,000 so far ahead of the weekend deadline.

Team: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane (Chilwell 45), Morgan (Amartey 84) , Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Okazaki (Ulloa 45), Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Musa, King, Amartey, Gray.

Besides, I thought it was me against the rest last night. Az might waver on Zlatan if United progress on Thursday but I think that's fair enough.

I really do believe GW34 gives us plenty to be scared of - the players we potentially overlook for DGW assets are strong, while the DGW assets are just not convincing IMO.

But, as we've seen so often, the DGW can shock us - for good or bad.

It's a bad scenario - we hype it up but then, as we get closer, we inevitably get cold feet. Saw it with City and Aguero last time.

But in that one, I spent 8 thinking that Aguero, Sane and Sterling, over two matches, would get me that back - but even then the players sold - Firmino and Coutinho - really hurt me a week later.

This looks tougher - Zlatan's potential vs Lukaku at West Ham and Kane as a captaincy option is the key element for me.

Those two strikers are in such form, it seems remiss to back against them and I think it's fair enough to consider these factors before diving in.

Zlatan for free is perhaps a simple decision - provided we're convinced on two starts. Zlatan for -8 seems a tough call for me.

For me,Lukaku to Zlatan is just so problematic. Zlatan potentially has a lot more games, but,we'll know after tomorrow night how likely he is to play in those.

I have Lukaku/Kane and Benteke and a free transfer having WC'd last week and I'm loathe to remove Lukaku who could easily score a brace (despite not having the best away form in the league). I struggle to see Ibra scoring the same over two fixtures AND you have the Rashford rotation to worry about.

Worth noting that Kaku loves playing against West Ham, he's scored in his last 7 games vs the Hammers. That coupled with their current leaky defence is leaning me towards handing him the (c) over Zlatan.

Zlatan hurt me in a different way. I planned it and got zero last week. On the other hand I was covering mini league dangers so not that bad.

I have Kane Kaku and Kun. I can do Ibra for a -4 but not sure I want to. What would you say based on this team Mark?

              Jaku (Picford)
              PVA / Valencia / Barragan (Jagielka/Alonso)
Alli / Son / Zaha / Coutinho (De Roon)
              Kane / Kaku / Kun
£0.8 ITB and I've used my FT this morning to bring in PVA (iItchy trigger finger)

              Thoughts? Thanks 🙂

I thought the main issue coming out was a WC as opposed to not having one. Getting a DGW player is not a big risk if they are lower end of the market. It's getting rid of them after. Man U with 2 is a no brainer for a risk.
I am playing BB this week as I have no WC and I will play TC in 37. Valdez has screwed me a bit.

I'm not sure if Andy will see this... but after watching the scoutcast last night, I thought I'd draft a GW36 WC team.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but he MIGHT be on to something re. GW37 BB. To get the big hitters, I need the likes of Niang, Benalouane, Yoshida, etc. in my team. Whereas this week would be DGW'ers plus Kane, King, Alli, Siggy, Firmino, Jak, Rom and Maguire.

I doubt I'll do it, but it's definitely a noteworthy idea.

I think it's just the nature of the conversations that take place - nobody wants to go on the Scoutcast and unequivocally promote player(s) as being ideal options so there's always the downside being called out.

I really believe that with such a late DGW, we should really prioritize Teams that are fighting for something title/UCL/relgation battle to avoid rotation risk on 37 but also on 38.

That's why a Vardy pick does not seem right at all to me but I might be wrong

I don't know yet because I will only activate it on 36 so I will have a better picture of the rankings etc..
Also, Aguero really is a factor. With 2 home games on 37 and in the UCL race, a fit or non fit jesus have a huge impact on the team sheet if you chose to go with or without aguero strategy. So I don't want to activate now with Aguero and have to rebuilt my hole team 2 weeks after because Jesus is fit.

Also, Sanchez is a factor. If Arsenal are out of the UCL race, there might be explosion between wenger and Sanchez imo. So I don't want to spend 11ish on a benched player too.

So many pros in waiting imo

I'm benching Eriksen for RUDY FLIPPIN GESTEDE!
How the hell did I get myself into this position (at least it's a bit maverick eh hehe)!!

    Hennessey
    Gibson / Valencia / Alonso
    Zaha / Sanchez / Alli / Hazard
    Ibra / Benteke / Gestede
    (Pickford, Eriksen, Mawson, Yoshida)

Anyone know how quickly members will be locked out of the players stats section after season end?

Unless it's down, then hopefully not until you're asked to renew with a reasonable grace period.

Only VVD can take Stephens place and he is out till the end of season with setback injury

Caceres is coming back from injury, and could take his place.

I'd rather have Stephens/ Yoshi + JWP + Gabbi and my 5h defender will be Holgate

What are Everton playing for? Lukaku' golden boot? Just wondering if some of them might already be headed to the beach.

as high a finish as possible and associated prize money. Probably for their futures too if they think that Koeman would stand for anyone faxing it in.

People who WC in GW35... what's your plan? Will you have 2 or 3x Chelsea (eve) and Arsenal (tot)? Or take hits to set up for GW37?

    Hi all, any advice here welcome... current squad;
    Heaton / Foster
    McAuley / Valencia / Holgate / Mee / Yoshida
    Siggy / Lanzini / Walcott / Alli / Puncheon
    Lukaku / Aguero / Kane

1 FT and 0.3 in the bank. Feel like Walcott has to go after not even getting off the bench against Boro Monday... am I right in thinking the next transfer has to be him out for either Son / Sane ?

You're spot on. Pity. Walcott would score if on the pitch imo. Still, that's wenger...

I have TC, BB and 2nd wildcard left and finding it a real struggle how to plot when to use them. No option to BB in 34 with 2 WBA players not playing Happy with my team for 35, Wildcard in 36 and BB in 37 so 34 seems my only option to TC. I have Negredo, Benteke and Zaha already, worth getting Ibra for TC as my transfer?

      Facing the same dilemma.

Will either TC Negredo this week or wait for Hazard in GW38...

im in the same position, but i am going to triple c sanchez in 36 and use wildcard in 35 to prepare for everything coming up. BB in 37

I think think that the players that lend themselves to a good wildcard for 36/37/38 aren't as valid options in 35 and my current team could outscore a wildcard team in that week. Plus any sort of changes with injury or suspension or selection can be vital in that extra week before and what you thought was good in 35 is then a problem in 37. I do think Sanchez as TC in 36 is there better option than any TC in 34, although Negredo as mentioned is teasing.

There's also the risk certain battles become dead rubbers and therefore the managers rotate heavily in GW37/38, especially if they're looking ahead to FA Cup Final, Europa Semis etc. For example:
          - Chelsea win the league
          - Spurs can't win the league but go clear of Liverpool / City
          - Man Utd are / aren't battling for 4th
