Captain Sensible – Gameweek 34

Next up is our usual Friday evening members’ article as we take a closer look at the leading armband candidates for the upcoming round of fixtures.

To start off, we run the rule over the Captain Poll contenders, then examine the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings before pinpointing a differential or two to help with your armband dilemma.

The Captain Poll

Prior to being forced off against Anderlecht last night, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the runaway leader in our previous Gameweek 34 Captain Poll for Manchester United’s upcoming pair of fixtures.

The veteran’s knee injury – with
reports suggesting he could be out for the season – forced us to reset the Poll earlier this morning, affording you another chance to assess the lay of the land.

This time around, United’s Marcus Rashford edges Middlesbrough frontman Alvaro Negredo into second spot.

Backed by 27%, Rashford’s goal and assist in the 2-1 win over the Belgians means he has now scored in three of his last four across all competitions. With the rest of United’s attackers misfiring, he’s been drafted in by over 144,00 FPL managers in the last 24 hours.

Yet his upcoming pair of hosts won’t make it easy – Burnley and Manchester City are amongst the top six sides in terms of resilient home defences, having conceded just 14 and 15 times in front of their own supporters.

United’s raiding right-back Antonio Valencia’s 3% of the votes cast. The Ecuadorian produced attacking or defensive points in eight of his last nine, though he’s started just one of the last three due to his manager’s late-season rotation.

Handed 21% of the votes, Negredo has netted twice in five fixtures under Steve Agnew and has the best pair of fixtures of any Double Gameweek frontman as the Teesside team travel to Bournemouth before hosting Sunderland in midweek.

The Cherries have conceded at least twice in seven of their last eight home matches, while David Moyes’ side have a single clean sheet on their travels all season.

By comparison, encounters with Liverpool and Spurs look tougher tasks for Christian Benteke (9%). A trip to his former employers at Anfield could still see the Belgian in profit – Jurgen Klopp’s side have injury worries at the back and have registered just one clean sheet in seven at Anfield.

At home to Spurs is far from straightforward, yet Benteke – with goals in three of the last four Gameweeks, including a ten-point tally at Stamford Bridge – has the form to prevail.

Only 3% are willing to gamble on Wilfried Zaha, while less than 1% are considering his team-mate Andros Townsend. The pair have both produced two goals and three assists in the previous six Gameweeks in a run that has seen the latter average seven points per appearance.

Golden Boot rivals Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku are rated as the best single-Gameweek prospects, earning 9% and 7% of the votes respectively.

The Spurs man has delivered double-figure hauls (20, 13, 12) in each of his last three starts ahead of a trip to Palace, while Lukaku has scored in nine successive appearances for Everton against weekend hosts West Ham.

I currently have Aguero on my bench in favour of playing a midfield 5 of King, Erik, Son, Millivojevic and Siggy.

I need to go to bed now, and the deadline will pass during the night...this is my last cry of 'am I mad?!'

Mourinho could well end up resting players in Europa rather than PL you know. What if they go to Spain and win 0-3. On the following Sunday they have Arsenal away, then home to Celta and away again to Tottenham again on the Sunday. Plus I don't buy Mourinho 'giving up' on the league. He would absolutely love to finish above any of them, Wenger, Pep, Klopp et al. Top 4 AND Europa League AND League Cup, he'll claim a very successful first season. Saying anything otherwise is jut protecting his players from the pressure IMO.

Celta are a very well-organised team. A draw would be a good result.

      1. bigbudgie
        • 9 Years

They are 20 points off the CL places in La Liga and they've lost 13 games total. United have lost 3 league games all season and are unbeaten in what is it now, 22?

          • 8 Years
          7 years, 4 days ago

That's because they have focused on Europa League this season. Can't blame them.

Atletico, in theory, also should have smashed Leicester (we all swa their terrible performances in the league), but they only managed to win 2-1 on aggregate.

One thing is looking at statistics and Celta's league perfomances, the other is using common sense (they just prioritize a European competition over the league, just like Leicester did)

              7 years, 4 days ago

And yet, United couldn't beat Anderlecht in 180mins of football.

Celta are no pushovers and they are clearly a better side than the Belgians. Mourinho won't rest anyone for the second leg against Celta.

    Heaton / Foster
    Holgate / Walker / Alonso / McAuley / Valencia
    Allli / Zaha / Pedro / Couthinho / Sane
    Lukaku / Kane / Origi

    1 FT / 0.1 ITB

    A. Foster -> De Gea, Walker -> Gibson, Origi -> Negredo (1 FT and -8)
    De Gea
    Gibson / Alonso / Valencia
    Allli / Zaha / Pedro / Couthinho
    Lukaku / Kane / Negredo (C)
    Heaton, Sane, Holgate, McAualey

    B. Foster -> De Gea, Walker -> Gibson, Origi -> Negredo, Lukaku -> Rashford/Benteke (1 FT and -12)
    De Gea
    Gibson / Alonso / Valencia
    Allli / Zaha / Pedro / Couthinho
Rashford or Benteke / Kane / Negredo (C)
    Heaton, Sane, Holgate, McAualey

Which option should I go for? Also If I do take a hit for Lukaku, should I get Rashford or Benteke?

      • 7 Years

Wouldn't take such a big hit. For -4 you can probably at least do Foster -> DDG, Walker -> Gibson. Depending on budget you could also add Negredo instead of one of those. If you have your all out attack I'd consider using it. You'd end up with something like this

      DDG
      Valencia Gibson/Alonso
      Alli Zaha Sane Pedro Coutinho
      Kane Lukaku Origi/Negredo

      Heaton Walker/Origi Holgate McCauley

Ok guys i really need help here ive already made my transfers and took a 12 point hit as i need to gamble to catch the person above me.

    My team is

    De Gea
    Gibson Alonso Valencia
    Sanchez Zaha Coutinho King
    Rashford Lukaku Negredo

Now i do have all my chips but i am planning on wildcarding on game week 36 and bench boosting on game week 37. Wouldve liked to actually use triple captain on game week 36 as we well but of course can only use one chip per game week. So anyway im really thinking i might have to use triple captain this week but the question is who and of course should i hold it off as well

GW38 has some GREAT fixtures for punts

    Jakupovic Grant
    Walker VALENCIA Alonso Evans Amat
    Alli ZAHA Siggy DEROON Lanzini
    Lukaku Kane Kun

    1Ft 1.9Itb

    A. Evans and Kun to Gibson and Negredo for -4
    B. Move A with Bailly and not Gibson
    C. Move A with Benteke and not Negredo
    D. Evans and Kun to Bailly and Benteke for -4

    Cheers 😉

If you're dropping Kun, might be better off dropping Amat rather than Evans

    First post - help needed!!

I have Costa on the bench. Midfield as follows:

    Firmino
    Coutinho
    Alli
    Hazard
    Zaha

    Options are:

A: bench a mid (and who?!)
    B: keep costa on bench

    Help much appreciated!!!

I would diffo have costa playing. I really fancy liverpool against palace even though i see palace scoring and i think spurs might struggle a bit at palace depending how cup match goes. Whos ur forward line?

I would perhaps rest one of your liverpool pair i would swing towards firmino

Excellent, thanks! Forwards are Negredo and Lukaku. I know Lukaku's away form isn't great...

Who should I replace ibra with? I want a full quota of dgw players for gw 37 so not lukaku. Not many interested in rashford, why not?

    Hi guys,
I would appreciate some help here.
    Have all 3 chips left.

    Do I

    A. TC Negredo this week, then do the WC for gw 35 and bb for gw 37
    B. Do the WC for gw 35, TC Sanchez in gw 36, and then bb gw 37

    Any other suggestions?

Those who have all 3 chips left, what's your plan? 🙂

    Thanks!

Im thinking bench boost game week 37 i think thats a no brainer im also thinking wildcard game week 36. My trying to decide on whether to triple captain now or perhaps leave it till gameweek 38 and going hazard.

Looking to take the -4 this week , been torn on who to bring in as a striker but Negredo looks a good choice . My issue is which defender out of the DGW sides ? Bailly seemed nailed on but will he play both games and is he worth taking a -4 ?

    Final decision-

    A) Bench Siggy,
    B) siggy to Zara and bench one of Alli or coutinho

if B is not on a FT, then forget it! Alli Coutinho may get you more points than zaha in two games combined.

    Robles
    Davies-Valencia-Jagielka
    Ali-Siggi-Coutinho-King-Eriksen
    Negredo (C) Lukaku
    .....................................................................
    Jakupovic, Vardy, Robertson, Mustafi (inj)

Is it GG ? or play someone from bench like Jaku for Robles ?
    Thanks !
