The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 34

We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Little bit gutted I didn't bench boost this week, although it's still early days.

Would have been - Pickford, Alonso, Mawson and King.

I still wonder how much a wildcarded GW36 team looking to load on 15 DGW players will fair - I don't know if there's enough cheaper quality out there given the big hitters we will want in the team.

Sunderland could be down and out by then so Pickford and Anichebe are poorer options. Someone pointed out above that Southampton don't have a great deal to play with and there's a lot of hopes riding on Yoshida / Stephens / Gabbiadini

If you have King and Gabbiadini at £ 6m, Sane at under £ 8m and potential Jesus at less than £ 9m, then doesn't that fit within budget?

Granted, I don't have Alexis at the moment. But am quite keen on a fresher Ozil if he stars tomorrow or vs Leicester.

I don't envy you as you do your "Let's talk FPL" stream, and that's going to throw up just about every WC permutation possible 😆

Sometimes it's better to take 10-15 mins over it and go with your first instinct / conclusion. But I know you have to please the masses!

I was also tempted. I saved my free, would have dropped Grant and Brittos and taken a hit for this bench

I did my bench boost as my team value is £106m my main rivals is £108m and he was taunting me what a better team he would have in gw37! Plus it worked out well. I have de Gea Maguire (9) Sanchez Davies so have already benefitted with Maguire. My midfield playing is king (8) Alli Sanchez zaha and Townsend. Benteke Kane and Negredo up front. Big boost Lukaku only 2. I could get a major boost today if palace do well and a de Gea clean sheet. Both me and him have Negredo Captn. I need to be 30 pts ahead by thurs night as he still has his tc and bb! I am 2 pts ahead tonight

    Daniels or Smith over Yoshida?

Bournemouth have good fixtures and have kept 3 clean sheets in the last 6 conceding against Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool in the other 3.

Next 3 are sun, STO, BUR.

They have nothing to play for but it seems to suit them and they've been playing well recently. Seem to have recovered from the loss of Aké.

Yoshida on the other hand faces a Hull side fighting a relegation battle in 35, a Gibsonesque dgw36 and dgw37 with Middlesborough away being the only good fixture. Caceres also lingers on the bench and could easily get a start or 2 in the run in.

    Any thoughts? Cheers

Cheers. Not much on offer in the way of defenders.

City players not nailed, and rest of the team have mixed fixtures. My defence isn't great so want someone to just play every week. Bournemouth defender fits the bill nicely. Do you reckon they can add to their 3 clean sheets over the last 6?

Yep. Most likely at home as we press well. Stoke and burnley both good possibilities. Can also see us beating Sunderland away. The only issue maybe our hunger after hitting the 41 pt mark if we beat Sunderland next week. Daniels offers good potential of attacking returns at home.

Gibson with the mother of all lumps up the pitch for a Negredo goal in a 1-0 win Vs Sun to in the 93rd minute to replicate the Sessegnon/ Cuellar moment.

I want it, not because I own both but because that was the best FFS moment of all time (I owned neither lol) and FFS needs a similar moment to restore the faith of great, long time posters who have abandoned ship because of various issues.

I really hope it happens for old times' sake before Mark sells the whole thing to someone else for a well deserved profit and some time with his kids.

What's the general consensus? TC in DGW37 or BB?

I agree that TC in 37 would probably generate more points than a BB in 37, but I think TC in 36 and BB in 37 would give more points than TC in 37 and BB in another week.

Don't you think Captain and BB would just edge it over TC?
With TC, you're banking on a hatty from your captain. BB is more stable as you say.

food for thought, the other issue with BB is having the funds to have a strong bench.

I have Benteke, so giving myself a moment to feel pleased after today's events.

I struggle to recall, but when he was at Villa, they had an opening DGW at the beginning of the season vs Arsenal and United, or someone equally as tough, and scored in both matches. Anyone remember this?

Also, Palace are a side in form, with genuine decent attacking players, and Benteke against Liverpool at least, should be interesting.

      1. Dr Dream

Yeah...should be good. I have Tekkers but maybe just felt that Zaha and Tekkers with (c) Tekkers was a step to far.

Strong chance of Kane scoring or assisting at Palace, and there's the comfort blanket of knowing he's well owned so you're doubling up against those sides (and your ML).

Just WC straight away. Just in case you are hit by a bus or your granny dies.
The reason people left activating it til the last minute was they mistakenly thought that one measly WC could affect price changes.
A former FPL winner did it, and Demi too, and both ended up on -48 or something.
Not saying they did it for reasons above, might have been an honest mistake but press confirm after your first 2 transfers.

Anyone bringing in any City defenders? Great fixtures and a dgw but nobody seems nailed

In goal: Bravo/Cabellero (Pep said his decision depends on the opposition + how they trained)

    RB: Sagna/Zabaleta/Navas

CB: Kompany (captain so probably nailed but you know his injury record) + Otamendi/Stones

LB: Clichy/Kolarov (although Clichy started the last 7 or so)

Or will they line up with 3 at the back?

I think Kompany is the way to go since him getting injured is less likely than Pep rotating, plus if he does get injured we can safely take the hit to get him out ahead of the DGW.

Crazy price changes have brought me to this. Please advise on this WC team.

    Pickford De Gea
    Vertonghen Alonso Bailly Yoshida Kone
Sanchez Hazard Alli King Ward Prowse

I would take De Gea out from your WC team, save some cash and bring in Hennesey, he is the form keeper at the minute and his fixtures are good, think about the Save points you can get from him and the potential clean sheet.s

I'm not a King owner but Sane would be my choice, he's involved in the City attacks, and City are now in the groove, playing free flowing attacking football. He has DGW coming up too.

Need a change of formation for someone like him I reckon.

4-3-3 with Herrera in there to allow Pogba forward.

4-2-3-1 might work if Pogba was no.10

Think you guys will play 433. It's the only formation to accommodate Pogba.

It'll be a new defensive mid, Herrera to the right and Pogba to the left, I think.

Define central midfielder? cause to me there are two different kinds.. those who operate solely in the final third and at times almost as a support striker like Alli who you mention above Coutinho would be another.. there are central midfielders who are play a lot deeper in a double pivot like Pogba Kante Xhaka Henderson etc etc etc.. i think it would be unfair to be expecting all of those to be hitting double figures given their different roles irrespective of transfer fee

He isn't worth 90 million as things stand he was worth the 60 that Real Madrid were willing to pay but United went to ridiculous lengths to secure the signing as we couldn't offer CL football..

There were better and cheaper players UTD could have got instead. The Pogba signing still doesn't make sense to me.
He may look like a 90m player in the future, however as it stands, it's not worked out.

no CL football thus the even higher price, and I believe the transfer fee is not so much of an issue here if Utd can afford..he has improved Utd for sure, how he may turn out in the future is something we have no idea yet so let's see, it's just one season..better players than Pogba that's available by then ? can't see many and are they willing to come to Utd ?

Not sure that it is these days berbs.. i reckon across the top clubs this summer most of the players they are bringing in are going to be costing 30 - 40 minimum.. Dier being English only 23 and a fantastic player only raises the fee too

True tbf prices are sky high so not a surprise.

Yeah i think he's a very good player been a near ever present in a fine Spurs side over the last few years and can operate in a few different positions.. after losing Schneidelin and Schweinsteiger he wouldn't be the only addition in there

The majority of people with those chips left will WC this week, TC 36, BB 37.

After that you might as well play AOA in 38 just for a laugh, as TM says it's a random one.

You have to wait all season for a time when aoa chip presents itself as being useful, might be early on or about now might work for a few. I wouldn't be surprised if lots don't use it at all. It's only a 'just in case' chip.

    My Team

    Valdes
    Ward, Valencia, Gibson
    Alli, Zaha, Siggy, King, Sanchez
    Lukaku, Kane,

    Grant, Yoshida, Ake, Austin

What are thoughts on picking up Austin as forward? I already have Lukaku and Kane but the third spot is open. Any suggestions or stick with midfielders.

Up to 377th. Probably the highest I'll get to this season 🙁

Maybe not, depends how well the triple captains in GW36 do.

Same here... need Boro to keep 11 on the field to avoid the tactical changes that hurt Negredo's chances.

Boro were pretty shocking even before the sending off. I was there in the Bournemouth end. The only saving grace is Sunderland are even more shocking and boro at home

Is Aguero v Boro not better than Lukaku v Chelsea?

Didn't Pep say he'd play 2 up front? I guess we'll find out over the course of the 2 games this week.

Is it worth touching Man U?

Rashford Rooney & Martial feels like a rotation nightmare

If one starts both games would you consider bringing them in?
