The Stock Check – Gameweek 34 – Sunday

Christian Benteke rises to the double Gameweek occasion to match his biggest haul of the season just when it mattered most. Elsewhere, Manchester United’s defence delivers, while Jose Mourinho shows caution with the talents of Marcus Rashford. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s events.

Christian Benteke
The Crystal Palace striker has made his initial emphatic bid to be the star asset of Gameweek 34 with his brace at Anfield.

Signed by 148,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline, boosting his ownership to just over 506,000, the Belgian was backed by a mere 2.1% of FPL managers with the captaincy.

His two goals took him to five in as many matches and, having sealed the maximum bonus points, Benteke has already matched his best tally of the campaign.

Wednesday’s encounter with Spurs will be a major test of his form, but with Burnley at Selhurst Park in Gameweek 35, Benteke may have another return to come before he gives way to a tide of Wildcards.

Philippe Coutinho
A sublime free-kick handed the Brazilian his fourth goal in five Gameweeks, while his seven shots on goal bettered any other midfielder over the weekend.

However, Coutinho was the one bright spark in an otherwise faltering Liverpool performance; that will be a concern for those seeking to hold firm against the clamour for double Gameweek assets.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face four favourable opponents over the run-in but will perhaps need to get Adam Lallana fit before they can discover their rhythm and cement a top four finish.

Coutinho has shown he can carry on delivering points regardless, but there will be mounting doubts that he will struggle to maintain such form if Klopp cannot inspire an improvement on Sunday’s disappointing display.

Daley Blind, Eric Bailly
While the Middlesbrough defence faltered on Saturday, one game into their double Gameweek, Manchester United’s backline assets have already produced.

Eric Bailly and Daley Blind – as the centre-back pairing – earned plaudits at Burnley as United sealed a third successive shut-out and a fourth in five Gameweeks.

Bailly was second only to Boro’s Ben Gibson for transfers in among defenders, having collected another 102,000+ FPL owners.

By contrast, Blind – one of our three differential picks – was acquired but just over 12,000 managers. But it was the Dutchman who came out on top in the BPS, edging out Bailly having completed more passes to pick up two additional points.

Both Blind and Bailly look set to be named in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up again come Thursday’s derby at the Etihad – Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still struggling for fitness, limiting the United manager’s ability to rest Bailly in particular.

Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera
Given the opportunity to lead the attack with Marcus Rashford rested, the Frenchman took his chance with an impressive display.

The goal and assist delivered a 14-point return – Martial’s best tally of the campaign – to add to Jose Mourinho’s options ahead of Thursday’s derby clash.

It is expected that he will make way, with Rashford among those to earn a recall, although Sunday’s performance suggested that Martial could still be a factor and may yet provide us with a midfield differential for United’s double Gameweek 37.

Herrera is perhaps a more realistic target. His assist for Martial’s goal took him to three from his last three Gameweeks which, along with the Gameweek 33 strike against Chelsea, has suddenly elevated him as a mid-price option for our end of season Wildcard. However, like Martial, the Spaniard will surely remain vulnerable to Mourinho’s rotation policy amid their Europa League campaign.

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine’s goal in Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal means he has now struck in six successive starts in all competitions, with seven goals in his last eight appearances.

His latest – a smartly taken one-on-one with Petr Cech – offers another reminder to those pondering an exit, with 59,000 selling the striker ahead of Gameweek 34.

However, with Gabriel Jesus nearing a return and Aguero’s fitness to be assessed ahead of Thursday’s derby following his withdrawal in extra-time, the uncertainty is building. Despite his form, few Fantasy managers will be prepared to risk the hefty investment on Aguero with their Wildcard refresh.

Nacho Monreal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gabriel
While it was Alexis Sanchez who sealed Arsenal’s place in the FA Cup final, it was Arsene Wenger’s decision to retain a three-man defence that provided the most significant development from Sunday’s semi-final victory.

Monreal scored the Gunners’ equaliser, with the excellent Oxlade-Chamberlain providing the cross as his opposite number at right wing-back.

Wenger’s formation promotes both assets as options ahead of the doubles in Gameweek 36 and 37, although the pair will remain vulnerable to rest and rotation.

Gabriel is perhaps the big winner from Wenger’s recent tactical flirtation.

He would seem assured of his start as the right-sided centre-back and, at just 4.8, would certainly present a cut-price route into the Arsenal rearguard should the formation stick.

In Decline

Marcus Rashford
Signed by over 457,000 FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 34, much was expected of the 19-year-old striker, only for Mourinho to limit Rashford to a cameo role from the bench at Turf Moor.

Given his 120 minutes on Thursday and with the derby clash beckoning, that decision was perhaps predictable but still hard to swallow for his recent investors.

Rashford will surely return to the fray for Thursday’s clash at the Etihad, although with Mourinho conceding post-match that he will be prioritising the Europa League over the run-in, it remains to be seen whether the starlet’s pitch time is curtailed.

Patrick van Aanholt
Returning from the bench against Leicester City, we expected the Dutchman to be reinstated in the Crystal Palace starting XI for the Sunday’s Anfield visit.

But Jeffrey Schlupp was retained at left-back and played his part in the Eagles’ 2-1 victory.

Bought by 28,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline, those managers will be hoping that van Aanholt gets his start against Spurs on Wednesday, although the Gameweek 35 home encounter with Burnley may well be the more profitable outing.

It remains to be seen if we can safely target him for that clash as a pre-Wildcard differential.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You are not the only one-)

Palace beginning to smell security now, that GW35 could be decisive and i would wait till after that to make a judgement on Benteke and co. Had him in my team for a long time in early parts of the season, dismissing him now doesnt look like the best idea, and one should really be better to have history in mind, because he is always more prolific in the end of the season, should have known-)

Based on predicted goals/match and player goal involvement.

      Match goal predictions:

-Palace-Spurs will be boredraw or very low scoring. Likeliest method of scoring, from set pieces, so somebody like Milijovevic, Cabaye, Eriksen, Dann, or Aldeweireld.
-Arsenal will beat Leicester narrowly, scoring 2-3 goals.
-Sunderland continues to get beat by everybody, Mbrough win to nil with 1-2 goals.

      Relevant goal involvement:

      Negredo, 57%.
      Sanchez, 45%.

So, I predict 0 attacking returns to Kane and Benteke, and 1 goal and ~2 baps to Negredo and Sanchez each.

        1. Camp No No

See below, but to be more accurate, likeliest scoring method from set pieces, for Spurs. Spurs have conceded the lowest number of both shots and goals from set pieces in PL, both recently and whole season. I only listed that for Palace too, because Palace is one of the best set pieces teams, so the chances are that IF (big if) they score, it's from set pieces.

I can't predict enough goals in this match to predict a goal for anybody in it. Of course, if Palace scores a couple, there's a decent chance that Benteke grabs a one.

That is, if he keeps his recent involvement of 54%. But his seasonal goal involvement (goals+assists/goal scored while on field) is about 35%, so it looks more like, if they score 3, he is bound to be involved in one. Last 6 matches it has been up, maybe it shows a rising trend, or maybe he has got an disproportional number of their goals recently. Who knows. Dann being injured, and them playing some teams that are weak defending against set pieces has helped. But chances are, his numbers will normalise a little.

        • 10 Years

*except that Dann is injured. So Benteke is probably the main indirect set piece threat. Still, I predict a cagey match, 0 or very few goals.

So, what does everybody think, is Wenger going to stick to 3 at back until he finally gets a bad result, or is two awkward performances enough to convince him to drop that formation?

But maybe having to thank his luck with City forwards bad finishing to get a result from that match changes his mind? Unless he really wants to wait for an embarrassing defeat before he changes his ways.

You mean like the difference between 'playing badly / losing' and 'playing awkwardly / winning' ? Sure I that difference.

If Arsenal had been putting in decent performances than you may have a point, but they have been playing badly, conceding goals and losing with a flat back 4.

I am sure most fans prefer an awkward win and an FA Cup final ?

They haven't been playing as well as, say, last season, and definitely not as well as you'd expect, but they haven't been outright awful either. They have definitely not been one of the worst teams in the league, but that Boro match just made them look like a one. Really relegation level performance there - because, being the weaker side in a match against a clearly relegation level team. They were worse against Palace, but Palace is not relegation fodder and has beat all other big teams recently too, so it's not that awkward performance. While change was needed, this doesn't look like its the good change.

Of course, fans will prefer an awkward win. But the thing is that bad performances will eventually lead to bad results more often than good performances. If Arsenal continues like this, that final may turn out to be a nightmare.

Certainly, what is true is that the last match against City, and that really at home, was bad too. But its the match against weak Boro that worries me the most.

I think he will keep it. Allows him to play Xhaka and Ramsey together and also ozil and Alexis closer to each other. Also Oz form has helped him take Bellerin off the firing line. Only losers in this are Walcott and Iwobi and Walcott's stock is not high at this point with his stupid comments after Palace loss.

Arsenal will be the eventual losers. They have been outright dominated by City at home, and more damningly, were in great difficulties against Middlesbrough. I was surprised he kept that formation after it almost backfired in what should have been one of the easiest matches of the season.

Yes, sorry. That wasn't really at home, but it's still in London. But fair enough, on neutral grounds, and City is of course a big and tough opponent. I still found that unconvincing, if not outright bad performance. Definitely better than against Boro though.

I mean the "outright dominated" was a little bit of exaggeration as well. Dominated, but still, it's true that Arsenal got perhaps better quality of chances than City. It's just that when you give a team like City that amount of still quite decent shots, and restrict yourself to only a few attacks, it's not really convincing. But coming out lucky against Boro is much less convincing. Or should convince you to change tactics.

The way I see it as a fan was the team was down in the dumps after Palace. Coming after the west brom defeat and a run of away games with many goals conceded. So it is a process of building confidence. I feel the come from Behind win at Wembley will help a lot. Wenger will see the new formation as giving a more secure base for the MFs. I fancy us to nick a point at WHL but then I always think we are better than Spurs. So clearly I am a 'deluded fan':-)

Thanks! Tough to say then, it was perhaps made for that City match, but that doesn't mean he won't keep it for now, as he seems to be seeing enough positives. Maybe I'm overstating it a little, because City didn't create much really great chances, but they had enough chances to score more than what they did. What I am more worried about is that Boro did get more and better chances against them.

Let's put it in stats. Boro per match averages:

        9.3 shots
        2.6 shots on target
        5.4 shots in penalty area
        …of which 0.7 in 6-yard box
        and 0.85 big chances

        Against Arsenal:

        13 shots
        5 shots on target
        9 shots in penalty area
        …of which 2 in 6-yard box
        and 2 big chances.

So, that's a massive outperforming of their seasonal averages, in a match against what is supposed to be one of the top teams in the league. And if we look at defensive averages, Arsenal has conceded per match:

        11 shots
        7 shots inside the box
        …of which 0.66 in the 6-yard-box
        and 1.5 big chances.

So Boro also did somewhat better attack wise than Arsenal's opponents have done on average. And Boro has been the weakest attacking team in the league this season. Particularly recently. And by far.

And its not that it was just an open game. Arsenal slightly underperformed its averages. Seasonal per match averages:

        14.8 shots
        5 shots on target
        9.8 shots in penalty area
        …of which 0.9 in 6-yard-box
        and 2 big chances

        Against Boro:

        12 shots
        4 shots on target
        7 shots in penalty area
        …of which 1 in 6-yard-box.
        and 1 big chance

And though Boros may be a decent defensive unit, if we look at defensive averages, Boro has conceded per match:

        13.9 shots
        8.8 shots in penalty area
        …of which 1.1 in 6-yard-box
        and 2.5 big chances.

So, Arsenal underperformed Boro's average opponent.

To me, that's way negative, and City match wasn't exactly filled with positives either.

Your right, 3 at back gives that one extra man against the forward pair, and the midfield formation a domination of the central midfield too, so that's a good reason to continue that way for sure. I'm afraid that after initial good results, this will backfire badly.

United not capable of trahings i think, but Spurs wil ltak eadvantage of that set up cause they (poch) know how to play it and how to exploit it. Whether it matters at all is another question; me thinks that Spurs will wipe them off the field no matter which formation they use, a matter of maybe loosing 2-0 than 4-0-)

difficult tp predict but it seems like Puel is a little bit more conservative so that awful rotation we saw during christmas time isn´t goeing to as bad, me thinks. He is by far their best suited striker, and Puels does not seem to be favouring either JRod or Long. Austin is not totally out of the picture, but wouldn´t bet on him to be much involved until season end, but thats a guess of course-)

Which SGW players should I look to keep on a WC in 36?
With big teams having doubles, it is difficult to hold expensive SGW'er. King for sure due to form and price but trying to keep expensive players like Kaku, Cout/ Firmino is very difficult if we want to cover big DGW teams.
How many SGW'ers will you be having? Who are they?

Will bring in King this GW and keep him for the rest of the season. Will also keep Holgate as he is a good enabler with good fixtures in 36 and 37. Easily benched in 35 and 38.

Agree. I'm sure those two will be in my WC team but do we want to miss out on Kaku's goals? Or Coutinho/ Firmino's effort to keep Liverpool in the top 4.

Haven't really decided about the Brazilians yet. Lukaku is one I'm considering for sure, but there is only 3 spots up top, so he might miss out. A couple of good, cheaper options (Gabbiadini, Jesus, Rashford, Defoe) and I will certainly have Kane there.

Many sound reasons to pick Negredo, people ought to know that footballing games very often is decided by some key events one could hardly foresee, like that red card given to Ramirez after just 20 minutes. That game was a pretty open affair till then so could have ended in a different fashion if not for that incident-)

If Sam keeps this up, he could be in line for the England Job!

1 ft? Just get rid of Negredo, maybe take a hit in defence. Your team is not that bad imo, and you have a lot itb.

Thoughts about this WC team? Low team value, so have 0.0 ITB with this team.

    Jaku - Pick
    Luiz - Davies - Yoshida - Stephens - Holgate
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Sane - King
    Gabbiadini - Rashford - Kane

Decent on a budget but Davies isn't going to get much time on the pitch when Rose is back. I would be tempted to downgrade Gabbi to fodder and upgrade one or two defenders or one of the keepers.

Agree. Maybe get a premium GK, Lloris if you want Spurs def.

For gameweek 37 which players are guaranteed to play both games for Man City?

Seems like Pep don't do guarantees. Sane looks nailed, but due a rest at some point?
