Captain Poll – Gameweek 35

We take a break from the current double Gameweek to look ahead to the key captaincy candidates for the next set of fixtures this weekend.

Already one double Gameweek star, Christian Benteke (7.3), has put up a good case for a place at the summit of our latest poll after scoring a brace against his former club Liverpool on Sunday.

The Palace striker has now scored five in as many starts and on Saturday evening takes on Burnley, one of the Premier League’s most porous away day defences that has shipped 33 goals on the road.

With one game still to go in Gameweek 34, against Spurs on Wednesday, the Belgian’s team-mate Wilfried Zaha (6.0) still has the opportunity to court votes to offer an alternative option among the Eagles’ ranks and make up for his blank at Anfield.

Marcus Rashford (6.6) was another sought-after double Gameweek asset who has so far failed to impress after being benched for Manchester United’s trip to Burnley yesterday.

Once he gets a tricky midweek game with rivals Manchester City out of the way, he looks primed for interest for Gameweek 35 given that he collides with a Swansea City defence at Old Trafford that is one of only four sides to have a worse defensive away record than Burnley. The Swans have shipped 35 goals and have kept just a solitary clean sheet on their travels.

The North London derby, at White Hart Lane on Sunday, is also likely to put forward a raft of candidates, with both sides on a fine run of scoring form.

Arsenal have won both their matches since switching to a wing-back system against Middlesbrough in the league and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. That is likely to renew interest in Alexis Sanchez (11.5). In the new system, the Chilean appears to have the freedom to wander back into central areas and has scored in both matches. Mesut Ozil (9.4) has also prospered, with the 6.1%-owned German scoring the Gunners’ second goal against Boro last Monday.

Spurs may have lost 4-2 against Chelsea in the other FA Cup semi-final this weekend, but their trio of chief captaincy candidates, Harry Kane (11.6), Dele Alli (9.2) and Christian Eriksen (8.8), were all involved in their side’s goals to ensure they attract interest.

With the Gunners conceding six goals in their last four, compared to one by Spurs over the same period, Kane, in particular, is expected to prosper. The England striker, who is the most popular acquisition so far this week in FPL’s transfer market, has scored six and assisted a further two goals over his last four league run-outs.

Manchester City’s assets are also expected to garner votes as they travel to a Boro side that was humiliated 4-0 away to Bournemouth at the weekend.

Sergio Aguero (12.8), who scored in City’s FA Cup defeat is his side’s top scorer on the road, with 12 goals, could lead the charge among Pep Guardiola’s troops in our latest poll. However, after picking up a potential fitness concern against Arsenal in yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final, voters may wait to see if he is fit to start in the Manchester derby.

Gabriel Jesus (8.6), the Argentine’s rival for a central striker berth, is back in training and could attract a flurry of votes later in the week should he gain minutes in the derby at the Etihad. His 0.5% ownership also looks set to rocket should he deliver attacking returns from this tricky encounter.

Liverpool’s Brazilian pair of Roberto Firmino (8.7) and Philippe Coutinho (8.5), who between them have scored seven times and racked up five assists over their last nine run-outs, have also been added to the poll ahead of the Reds’ trip to Watford.

Following their 2-1 defeat to Palace at the weekend, a win is vital for Jurgen Klopp’s troops if they are to cling on to their top-four place. The Hornets’ shipping of 23 goals in their 17 home league matches offers hope to those backing the Liverpool duo.

At Goodison Park, Romelu Lukaku (10.5) is usually a shoo-in for top billing in our captaincy poll, given that he has scored 16 goals on home turf – more than any other player.

A visit from title favourites Chelsea might curtail support, although the Blues’ failure to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 22 should ensure that the Belgian remains a strong option. His position as FPL’s most popular player, with a 46.7% ownership, should also keep him high on our latest list.

Southampton players are among this week’s enticing differential captaincy picks and in particular fit-again striker Manolo Gabbiadini (6.4), who has seen his ownership dwindle to 3.4% following an injury lay-off that halted a scoring run of four goals in as many matches. With penalties in his locker, the 1.9%-owned midfielder Dusan Tadic (6.9) is another that could earn votes as we scout out the Serbian ahead of the Saints’ two double Gameweeks.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 35 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

kun: 30 goals this season, no where near PFA team of the year

(and hasn't made it on to it once in all his time playing in Prem League)

    insane.

Maybe he is a thoroughly unlikeable chap.

TBF they vote very early and he tends to have injuries. If it were held after the season he surely would have been in it multiple times. Like when he won City the title. Football Writers awards tend to be a bit better as they vote around now I think.

He missed out to Rooney and Van Persie his first year and he missed out to Kane and Vardy last year . Rooney and Van Persie both outscored him that year . Kane was top scorer last year and they weren't going to leave Vardy out considering what Leicester did .

No Eriksen is equally mad. Football is about creating chances as well as the scoring of the goals. Nobody better than him for doing that...well maybe Sanchez, who isn't even in it either.

      It's a nonsense.

I agree with it for the most part tbh.
Sanchez not there is criminal. People have short term memories and forget his performances earlier on. His stats speak from themselves.
I actually don't think Ddg should be on there. I'm a utd fan but this year he actually hasn't had to keep us in as many games,Heaton surely the better pick?
I wanted Valencia but maybe I'm biased haha

I know captaincy poll traditionally goes out on a Monday but this seems very early considering we are in the middle of a DGW! I know I won't be voting until Friday morning haha. I imagine my vote will be one of:

    King
    Benteke/Zaha
    Coutinho
    Jesus/Sane/Aguero (depending on fitness/availability)
    Kane

Considering who I own currently, I will back for my team either Kane (the "safe" pick) or King (the "maverick" pick)

      Worth the -4? (No WC)

Rojo, Negredo > Man City Defender, Gabbiadini

Haven't decided who from City yet, depends on their fitness levels and whether or not Stones is back. Between Clichy, Stones and Kompany. I have 5m ITB so doesn't matter cash wise. Valdes will become Cech/Forster next week.

      Jaku (!Valdes!)
      Alonso, Yoshida, ______ (Baines, Vertonghen)
      Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, Zaha (TCarroll)
      Kane, Benteke, ______

"Man City Defender" well, that's an headache. There is no 100% nailed defender at City actually.
The only one might be Kompany but he's not even 100% as his fitness might be managed and eased

I agree, I think one of them will be worth the gamble though, their fixtures are too good and have nothing to play for but a CL place. I want to go for Kompany, he has impressed me since coming back but want to watch him for the full 90 in midweek first. Clichy is as nailed as they come, but with Pep nobody is safe.

its a DGW,there is bad advice all over the place just because some players playing twice, and that seems to trump form, fixture, everything and logic goes out the window.

I'd give my right b0llock for a Negredo(c) hat-trick! Got my ML rivals right on the rack having taken -8 and even -12 point hits for the likes of Valencia and Rashford(c) transfers. I'm the only one with wildcard and BB left too! 🙂

More likely to score a hatty than those happening.

Just to double check for those who have already played their TC chip but with a WC and BB still in hand when is the best time to wildcard?
                  GW36 then BB in 37?

Bailly won´get any rest i´m afraid. No alternatives besides Carrick, but Mou will not play that game, Carrick and Blind in central defense is a recipe for disaster-). CBs should be able to play more games, and they had a quite easy match yesterday in terms of defending. No I can´t see that. Blind is a little bit more in the mix in attacks, maybe, if you wanting some attack points to go as well. Bailly only knows where the goal in his part of the field is-)

not expected to be back before that. Other sayings from Mou is his wishful thinking on his part and not actually possible. But of course one of them could be faster in their recoveries than expected, but still it will be may before they arrive

WC now or next week? Upside for either way...BBGW37 (already used TC)
Now: Southampton has Hull so might be good getting 2 or 3 now. Get rid of few benchfodders since rotation so bench must be stronger.
Later: Arsenal has Spurs so avoid this week. Might be good to wait and see form and gametime for DGW players Gabba, Deeney, Defoe before deciding, and if Arsenal can change things.

                    Team:
                    Foster Jak
                    Valencia Bailly Gibson Alonso Amat
                    Sanchez Alli Eriksen King Zaha
                    Lukaku Negredo Diomande
Could just use ft to punt on Aguero or someone.

The article above alluded to his very high ownership, so taking him out of your squad can be a risk. No DGWs but their SGW run in isn't too bad. Unless a better option presents itself (possibly Jesus or Costa), I'm fine holding him for now.

Same here tbh. We still had a decision to make with giving him the captaincy though in fairness

Yeah but lots got negredo over benteke. That was a wise decision on our part.

...and rashford too. Avoided both in favour of Benteke.

This! If not for that, I'd have done Siggy > Townsend

Would you rather double sot defence or midfield?

Defense based on rotation last winter.

Defense since it is cheap and gives more flexibility elsewhere.

They have an FA cup final and GW 38 could be a must win game against Everton, surely the rest will come in a DGW.

Anybody else concerned with Gabbi minutes now that Austin is due back in training?

There is no better option in that price bracket for coming gameweeks and doubles.

I agree, but he isn't a good option if he doesn't play. I'd rather pay more for someone who plays. Rashford is a similar price and arguably better value, he should play the majority of games. It's no shock he was rested after playing 120 mins in midweek. Jose trusts him, has said it many times publicly recently.

Agree. Gabbi a bad choice. Stay away. Double Defence is probably the way to go with tadic or jwp.

Rashford is as much likely to get rested as Gabbi? Even more games and hello, Martial was good so José will rotate. And fixturewise it´s not the brightest i´ve seen, to be fair-)
