This Much We Know – Gameweek 34

Cherries assets spruce up their end of season CVs. Middlesbrough’s defence appears chaotic under Steve Agnew. Jose Mourinho’s teamsheet frustrates once again, while a rested Eden Hazard builds his stock for the Wildcard shake-up. This and more occupy our thoughts following the weekend’s action.

Agnew’s appointment may have doomed our Double Gameweek aspirations…
We woke up this morning and checked again but, sadly, our worse fears were confirmed. Somehow we did decide to invest in Middlesbrough for their double Gameweek 34.

It didn’t take long for the wheels to come off.

Just two minutes into their trip to Bournemouth, we were already regretting our faith in the seemingly doomed Teesside outfit after Josh King opened the scoring in a comprehensive 4-0 rout of Steve Agnew’s beleaguered side.

Granted, Boro still have a midweek home encounter against Sunderland – a side with a single away clean sheet on their travels all season – to atone for their Vitality hammering.

Yet the signs are far from encouraging. Middlesbrough have now conceded at least three times in three of six matches under Agnew and found the net on just four occasions.

Put into perspective, Boro only conceded three or more in three of Aitor Karanka’s 27 matches in charge prior to his dismissal.

With Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool to come in the final four Gameweeks, it looks only a matter of time before their slip back into the Championship.

Ben Gibson is already number one for transfers-out in defence, while Alvaro Negredo is second only to the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the exodus picks up pace.

Further disappointment on Wednesday and those sales will surely only accelerate, and we will be resigned to put it down as a lesson learned.

The Cherries can be more than pre-Wildcard punts…
As evidenced by Bournemouth’s demolition of sorry Boro, overlooking those sides without upcoming double Gameweeks isn’t always the wisest of tactics.

Charlie Daniels racked up 14 points in the south coast stroll, while Josh King – benched by over 104,000 FPL managers – netted for the eighth time in nine Gameweeks to maintain his relentless stream of goals.

Such form suggests that, even for those with second Wildcards still to play, Eddie Howe’s key men yet be worthy targets.

Indeed, with Sunderland, Stoke and Burnley up next, the schedule could barely be kinder for a Cherries side nestled in the safety of mid-table and free to express their attacking instincts.

The relegation dog-fight still has a part to play…

While Middlesbrough look to have meekly accepted the inevitable, Swansea City and Hull City’s battle for survival is set to go to the wire.

Subject to more transfers-out (97,000) than any player in the centre of the park last week, Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the points as an assist in the Swans’ 2-0 win over Stoke City elevated him to sixth in the midfield standings.

Meanwhile, goals from Fernando Llorente and Tom Carroll, and an assist from Jordan Ayew, suggested that Paul Clement’s differentials still have the stomach for a fight.

It was a similar story over at the KCOM Stadium, where goals from Lazar Markovic and Sam Clucas – with 0.2% and 0.1% ownerships respectively – helped extend the Tigers’ superb home record under Marco Silva.

The 2-0 win over Watford served as a timely reminder to the 756,000+ who opted to bench Eldin Jakupovic that this time of the season has the potential to make heroes of the unfashionable.

On that note, Harry Maguire – owned by less than 1% of FPL managers – now has two goals and a clean sheet in three ahead of encounters with Sunderland and Palace in the next three. He’s had more shots, and more shots on target, than any other Tigers’ asset since earning regular starts in Gameweek 15.

Travel sick Lukaku can’t be a passenger…
Romelu Lukaku may have exceeded our expectations this season, gifting us some fond memories along the way, but, typically, he’s still finding ways to frustrate.

While 11 goals in six at Goodison Park underlines his devastating form on Merseyside, Lukaku’s blank at West Ham means he now has just a single goal from his last eight road trips.

Still sitting in over 46% of sides, Lukaku now offers a home encounter against Chelsea prior to a pair of road trips (at Swansea and Arsenal) in the final three Gameweeks.

Without a double Gameweek, he now arguably has just one very favourable-looking fixture remaining – at home to Watford in Gameweek 37.

But with ten teams set to play twice that week, the Belgian will surely need to convince against the league leaders this weekend if he is to avoid a major cull once our second Wildcards go active.

Zlatan’s absence has made Mourinho all the more slippery…
Say what you like about Zlatan Ibrahimovic, at least his availability handed us a certainty on Jose Mourinho’s teamsheet.

Devoid of his injured top scorer, the United manager’s decision to bench the in-form Marcus Rashford, and instead call upon Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, was vindicated after both grabbed a goal apiece in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Burnley. That didn’t make it more palatable for the 457,000+ FPL managers who moved for Rashford ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Utilised as a 21-minute bit part player, Rashford will be expected to return to centre stage for Thursday’s derby clash with Man City.

Whether he can justify the show of faith that persuaded over 279,000 to hand him the armband is another matter altogether.

At the back, Mourinho gave Antonio Valencia’s 99,000+ new owners another reason to gripe after handing the right-back yet another day off to start Ashley Young.

The Ecuadorian has now graced the teamsheet in just one of his side’s last four league matches, missing out on two of their previous three clean sheets.

With United challenging for a Champions League berth on two fronts, Mourinho’s line-ups will likely continue to frustrate over the run-in. Investment for double Gameweek 37 already looks to be riddled with uncertainty.

We’re reserving a slot for Benteke under Big Sam…
Okay, they aren’t mathematically safe quite yet but, with victories over Chelsea, Arsenal and now Liverpool in the last five Gameweeks, it seems only a matter of time before Crystal Palace secure their survival.

Sam Allardyce’s record of having never suffered the ignominy of relegation looks near certain to remain intact, with Christian Benteke the chief protagonist in their bid to beat the drop.

Allardyce’s penchant for…ahem…”direct passing”, allied with the Belgian’s aerial ability, appeared to be a marriage made in Fantasy heaven from the get-go, yet it took Benteke – and the Eagles – time to adjust.

After netting once in his first 11 league outings under the new manager, Benteke now has five goals and an assist in five ahead of a midweek home clash with Spurs.

Further home matches, against Burnley and Hull, in the following three afford the Belgian a further platform to deliver, with Benteke surely pencilled in on our Watchlists for next season. A full pre-season with Allardyce and mid-price valuation with the FPL could see Benteke become a darling around these parts.

Avoiding Hazard with the Wildcard just invites heartache…
Eden Hazard required little time to make an impact once unleashed from the bench, along with Diego Costa, in Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final win over Spurs.

Surprisingly named among the subs on Saturday, the Belgian’s introduction proved the turning point as he supplied a goal and assist to steer his side to a Wembley showdown against Arsenal next month.

While Costa once again huffed, puffed and scowled his way through his brief Wembley appearance, Conte’s decision to afford Hazard a slight rest seemed to reinvigorate the schemer and he again demonstrated his potential to deal heavy end of season damage.

Hazard has produced points in five of his last six league outings, serving up three sets of double-figures over that period, with the only blank being the 2-0 loss at Old Trafford in Gameweek 33.

Ironically, that defeat may now favour FPL managers. With their lead whittled down to four points at the summit, Conte can ill-afford to take chances in his bid see off Spurs.

Providing the chase continues, Chelsea’s outstanding schedule from Gameweek 36 onwards – (MID, wba & WAT, SUN) – hands Hazard the chance to play his way into our Wildcard plans as he tracks Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku at the top of the FPL overall standings.

Pochettino’s tinkering has us doubting Son again…
After running riot with a 4-2-3-1 formation in recent weeks, Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to revert to a 3-4-2-1 set-up against Chelsea at Wembley has once again placed question marks over Son Heung-min.

Utilised as a wing-back with Ben Davies dropping to the bench, the South Korean failed to register a single attempt on goal before being replaced midway through the second period.

Five goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks demonstrate that Son – on his day – is more than capable of delivering major hauls and rivalling pricier team-mates.

But Pochettino’s weekend XI served a timely reminder that the midfielder’s position and pitch-time will keep us fidgeting.

With Christian Eriksen providing the assists for goals from Harry Kane and Dele Alli in the 4-2 defeat, Son’s star has slipped, and only a return to 4-2-3-1 is likely to keep him in consideration as a viable route into Spurs’ relentless attack.

Keeper swaps are an untimely issue…
Nobody likes spending precious transfers on goalkeepers – not now, not ever.

Yet on Saturday alone, we witnessed Lee Grant, Joel Robles and Darren Randolph all drop to the bench after extended runs between the posts for their respective clubs.

Owned by 9% of FPL managers, Grant is now the number one for transfers-out between the sticks in light of Mark Hughes’ decision to hand the fit-again Jack Butland a first start of the season for Stoke.

While Fantasy managers still holding their second Wildcards have carte blanche to freshen up their options for the double Gameweeks, those without are now left fretting over the one position that we so often like to sort and then ignore.

would pool fans agree this is the most important 4 weeks of football for them in last ten years?this could make or break
just how we progress under klopp, who I truly believe is the real deal(I think he is a better manager than Pep and Pocchetino)
no CL means we shop at Aldi instead of Marks and Spencers when it comes to players, its that simple. We've milked Southampton for all its worth and the squad is embarrassingly light weight. We could be cast adrift for years if we dont get top four and having a manager as good as klopp could be wasted simply because we don't have the personell to play his system. it will be a greater achievement than finishing second if we do it

Pool fans should be worried as failure to get top 4 will be catastrophic. I'm not sure about Klopp as can't understand how he shipped out my favourite defender; Sakho, and he managed the Africans cup badly; needed cover for Mane.

We absolutely have to. The competition is so fierce now that without CL money and prestige we would be cut adrift. You have Spurs well and truly in the mix now.
The thing is though if Man U win the EL fourth place won't be good enough.

I'm not sure this is the case. And anyway, Arsenal will finish in 4th place.

my understanding is 4th would still get a CL place, once leicester got knocked out then England can have a max of 5 teams.winning europa league is basically an extra place for whatever country whose club wins it. nothing changes in terms of the 4 league spots avaialble

Pretty sure that if Man Utd win Europa league, they will be the fifth English team in the Champions league next season. Only way that 4th place would have missed out would have been if Man Utd won Europa league AND Leicester City had won Champions league.

      1) Is doubling up on Southampton defence a good or very bad idea?

      2) Is Bravo nailed? Apparently Caballero hasn't signed for next season so maybe Pep isn't interested in him anymore?

      3) Will Jesus take Aguerro's place?

      4) Will Sané ever be rested?

      5) Daniels as good an option as any other dgw player in his price bracket?

      6) Will Lukaku troll his sellers in 37?

      7) Is PVA going to get back in the starting lineup

      8) Hazard essential?

      9) Siggy worth holding now he's on track to return in reverse fixtures as highlighted last week?

      1) At half time, do you have any DGW34 regrets?

      2) Why did Jonty and Andy captain a player from the lowest scoring team in the league? Was it a stroke of genius for Mark to captain Benteke?

      3) Did FPL managers with Man United players fail to learn the rotation lessons of Liverpool in the Europa League last season?

      4) Which single gameweek players should we keep until the end of the season?

      5) I'm giving you a second Triple Captain chip ... How would you use it?

      6) Who are the best DGW37 players to get from the so-called lesser teams?

        🙂 at question 2.

I don't think we need a question about that given it will be mentioned when we go over our scores so far, but obviously Andy and I are delighted, as ever, that you continue to take such an incredible and insatiable interest in our teams. 😉

I've followed your team for some weeks and did some similar transfers- PVA, puncheon etc but got little return. Later when I've started following Andy's team I've got some return Mawson, King etc. In fact I was kind of relieved seeing Negredo in his team and thought my triple captain punt on Negredo may not be that bad after all.

Is Aguero a good captaincy choice for gw 35?
In brilliant goal scoring form and up against a Boro defence that just got hammered by Bournemouth. Or is it too risky given that he played 97 mins in the cup and could play the full 90 in the derby?

And 09/10 was the only season in which neither of you finished in the top 10k.

The difference appears to be that you improved every season up to your peak at 840 in 13/14 but have regressed since (hopefully you will have better luck next season!), whereas Mark has been more erratic, finishing outside the top 20k in 09/10, 13/14 and 15/16 but with top thousand finishes in 08/09, 11/12 and 14/15 and heading for another this season.

Perhaps you should take some inspiration from Mark - he always follows a poor season with a strong one! 🙂

I'm focusing purely on my two cash mini leagues next year- no distractions. No cups, no other leagues.

Missing top spot on those this year is my biggest regret. A high rank is great to get and should follow a good performance in those - but for me reclaiming those crowns is my top priority next season, rank comes second.

Jonty, I didn't really express that very well.

You finished in the top 7k for 6 years in a row, including one top thousand finish, whereas in the last 10 years Mark has never had more than 3 successive top 10k finishes and has had 3 finishes outside the top 20k.
But in that time he also had 3 finishes in the top thousand, with a best of 42 (the answer to life, the universe and everything!).

Some seasons you both finished in the top 10k, some seasons only one of you did, and in one season (your second)neither of you did.
The main difference IMO is that you are (before this season) more consistent, but that Mark has more highs (top thousand) and more comparative lows (outside the top 20k).
The differences are in styles of play and attitudes to differentials and risk-taking (which can work out better some seasons than others) - not that when one of you does well the other always does badly, which isn't quite true.

How much risk is there in player price increases, for fpl managers who already used their TC chip, and thus planning on WC'ing gw36 for 37 - as opposed to those doing so now in order to TC36 and BB37?

I'd like to know this, presumably not that much enhanced risk, as a large amount of transfers will be on WC, not affecting price. However their will be a lot of hits being taking by those without WC as scramble for DGW players starts and making up ground in mini leagues.

I'd be interested in a discussion of whether, (for those without TC chip left so not TC in 36), the advantages of waiting until GW36 to WC, and so having a better idea of likely lineups for GW37, outweigh the advantages of WCing early.

I thought the wc did affect prices as normal, but not the prediction sites stats, but I might be wrong there. I assume the majority will bb 37, but where to use TC chip takes more thought.

        Hi there!
I see a LOT of people transferring in Gabbiadini into their teams on WC,
for Lukaku or Benteke I imagine.

Who will score more points until the end of the season?(DGWs) Vardy, Rashford Gabbiadini??
** Or could the SGW players outscore them:
Benteke, Lukaku or even Origi and Afobe??

I mention Lukaku as I'm selling him for Vardy

Jonty, i have used my TC in GW27, have WC and BB left. I was completely set on WC in GW36, then BB in GW37, but now I wonder whether it's more beneficial to WC in 35 instead so to get the benefit of these players early (but in doing so sacrifice up to date info on rotation/injuries) . What are your thoughts... WC in GW 35 or 36?

Without hindsight (effectively it is still only half time) was Negredo really a well thought out choice for captain .... bearing in mind ?
        - much better SGW and DGW alternatives
        - Boro are the lowest scoring team in the league
        - Negredo has the tendency to go on 5 - 10 game runs without scoring or assisting

How cautious should be we be when using the WC for the Double GWKS.

Do we get wildcard mist in our eyes at the excitement of a DGWK? I originally wanted 15 double GWK players if that is even possible at this stage.. but I think it needs to be balanced out there are som great fixtures for sgwk players too and we all got burned on this before last season.

Should we not go too overboard no matter how irresistible it is to have that many dgwk players and is this were our experience comes in and we should listen to our experience and not our Maverick who still chases the dream...

Loving the scoutcasts guys but in light of recent discussions on this site, would it now be wise for the team to add a disclaimer at the end of each scoutcast stating that your choices, particularly captain and transfers, are subject to change, thus preventing further heated debates?

I don't think this is a much of an issue most weeks. Personally, the only reason I picked up on it this week was that Mark came across so assured that he wouldn't captain a double game week player. I think he was even pressed on it by Az/Jonty(?) and still said Kane. Of course he can change his mind but when you're in the spotlight like he is you should expect some stick for changing 🙂

Fair enough DS. I agree with your observations and a gentle ribbing never did any harm but I'd hate it to get too serious. Some people are playing for big money now and I just hope that the scoutcast team don't get too harangued for sharing their thoughts.

1)With the FA cup result now surly 3 Tot and 3 Man city now essential , less rotation ( other than Aguero) and will want both have league positions to play for

        2) will sterling come back to the fore again now of Silva injured/ rested esp if Jesus comes back in

        3) are most of Man U assets worth keeping rotation for EL games

        4) Arsenal good for DGW but who are good picks, sanchez offers best haul potential, defence cant see many nailed , so struggling there

        5) what DGW teams/ players should be left alone

A review of some FPL players pre-WC teams against their GW29/30 (ish) WC teams has revealed (with a few notable exceptions) with hindsight that:

        - with a FT and the odd hit (same key WC players), and
        - having bench players promoted for injured or rested players (surprising lucrative with Hull, Soton, Everton bench fodder defenders etc), and
        - adding in the same post WC transfers (surprisingly many!), and
        - same captains choices when possible ...

That the non WC team ends up, on average, 10 - 15 points worse off than the WC teams by GW33

        Question
... effectively is a 10 to 15 point gain with an early WC better than the potential benefit of building a completely new and bespoke DGW37 team

Or to put it another way ... who would give up the their WC now for 10-15 points added to GW37 score? Or buy back the WC in GW35/36 for 10-15 points hit ?

To be clear, it was supposed to come across as banter for coming across so certain in the Scoutcast that he wouldn't go near a double player and then did. The sort of banter I would expect you guys on their to give him 😉 . I think it exploded to be a little more serious than it needed to be.

Can we justify getting in three Arsenal players for their DGW36 & DGW37 or is there 1) too much rotation risk with an FA Cup final Wenger HAS to win as a minimum to sell a new contract to the majority of fans (assuming they can't qualify in the top 4) and 2) Just better single GW options in 36 given Arsenal's poor form.

Saying something about benching dilemmas would be really useful for many I think.

Is it better to go with a really strong front 8 for the GW37 BB from now and risk having to bench a lot of points in the other weeks?
Or is it better to stick to a cheap 8th forward and bring in a one week punt in GW37.

Personally I have to decide this week between benching Zaha, King, Rashford, Lukaku and it isn't pleasant

Even for those WCing for dGW36, would it be a good idea to give dGW36 some respect and be open to the idea of taking hits for DGW37. I don't really like the idea of having a fairly fixed team across two GWs, mainly because I always feel its important to be flexible.

        Team atm:
        Heaton/Pickford
        Alonso, Walker, Bailly, Yoshida, A.Smith
Alli, Sanchez, Siggy, King, De Roon,
        Kane, Lukaku, Negredo

Which is worse, to "Jump the Gun" or "Miss the boat"??
Is it worth WC this week ahead of the inevitable price rises in 36. The one thing I have really noticed this season is the price rises (both the amount & speed). I have a nice looking WC template that I can afford (on my current team value) right now but think a good few of the players I have in it will rise and therefore leave me struggling to fill spots. Would really love to hear some thoughts on this.
For example, if I pop in Jesus now and it turns out he wont play I would happily take a -4 or -8 to do a little bit of juggling. Leaning towards getting the best I can now (knowing I will probably not be able to afford the same team in 10 days time) but also in the knowledge (or hope) that too much wont change in that space of time. Obviously if there is a string of injuries I'm in trouble.
Would love the scoutcast team's thoughts and everyone else's for that matter,
        Thanks.

WC gw 36 plans : which do you prefer for gw36&37 ? King (STO + BUR) or JWP (liv/ARS + mid/MANU) and the extra cash ? predicting around 270 minutes for JWP over the 4 matches... or other ?

You get really bizarre results on the final day quite often...maybe saving TC til GW38 might be fun.

        1) I still have Alexis in my squad.
Should I keep him, or transfer him out for Hazard ?

2 I also have my wildcard. Who is the one "must have" goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward?

        3) bravo or Forster?

        4) Should I keep Tottenhams Davies or transfer him out?

      Heaton
      Alonso Valencia Gibson
      Sanchez Eriksen Alli Sane Zaha
      Kane Benteke
      (Pickford // Mawson Stephens Anichebe)
      2FT, 1.7itb, no WC

      1) Eriksen > Hazard
      2) Alli > Hazard

      A) Gibson > Clichy
      B) Gibson > Daniels

Thoughts? Not sure what I should be doing with Benteke, I don't have the luxury of a WC to get rid easily, nor enough money to upgrade to a premium striker.

Mostly managers with Triple Captain and Bench Boost will be using it now for GW35.
So to use TC in gw36 and have a load of double gaming players to hit the bench boost.

You can only use one chip each gameweek

What is best to change out?

          Valdes,

          Allí, Zaha, Siggy, Sanchez, King,
          Lukaku, Kane,

          Grant : Yoshida, Ake, Austin

How do I maximize for DGW 36,37?

          1) Replace Siggy, Lukaku - > Hazard, Rashford?
          2) replace Zaha, Lukaku ->Hazard, Afobe?

Also Grant now out so adds more complication.
