The Stock Check – Gameweek 34 – Wednesday

Spurs grind out a vital victory, Arsenal need help to triumph and Middlesbrough pick up their first three points of the year on a dour but important night of Premier League fare. A long and meandering Gameweek 34 is nearly over, with few well-owned assets enjoying a profitable Wednesday night.

Here’s the Stock Check…

On the Rise

Christian Eriksen
In the rush to pick up Spurs stars for their Double Gameweek 37, the Danish midfielder has been rather left behind.

More than 30,000 managers sold Eriksen ahead of their trip to Selhurst Park and he duly punished that lack of faith with a stunning winner to keep the title race alive and his loyal 18% ownership happy.

That’s three goals and as many assists over the last six Gameweeks for Eriksen. Add in nine bonus points, including a maximum last night, and he’s provided 49 points over that period – the 35.2%-owned Dele Alli has 42 points from the same haul of goal and assists, but can’t match his team-mate for bonus awards.

The pair remain key assets for the run-in, with Harry Kane’s assist for Eriksen keeping his own output simmering ahead of Sunday’s decidedly crucial North London derby.

Indeed, Kane remains the top FPL transfer target since the previous deadline passed, with over 34,000 new owners snapping him up.

Nacho Monreal, Gabriel
The Spanish defender is thriving in Arsene Wenger’s brave new world of three at the back.

The 3-4-2-1 formation was rolled out again in the 1-0 win over Leicester City, though the Gunners’ manager’s decision to play Kieran Gibbs at left wing-back allowed Monreal to switch to left centre-back at the expense of Rob Holding.

That derails plans to exploit the young centre-half’s 4.0 price as we consider how best to take advantage of Arsenal’s two Double Gameweeks still to come.

But it should boost Monreal’s attractiveness. He’s not the cheapest at 5.8, but Wenger has used the versatile Spaniard in all but two league matches this season.

His 12-point haul last night included an assist for Robert Huth’s own goal, a clean sheet and maximum bonus points.

A cheaper option involves Gabriel (4.8), who has started all three matches of Wenger’s new-look Arsenal in light of Shkodran Mustafi’s ongoing injury absence.

Choosing Gunners defenders remains risky, however – last night’s clean sheet was only a third since Gameweek 21 and they face Spurs and Southampton away and host Manchester United over the next three fixtures.

A knee injury picked up by Laurent Koscielny last night clouds the issue further. Although the Frenchman managed to play through the pain to finish the Leicester match, Wenger conceded post-match that he’s yet to ascertain the extent of the problem.

In Decline

Alvaro Negredo
More than 150,000 managers rolled the dice and captained the striker for Middlesbrough’s Double Gameweek and the Spaniard duly produced the slimmest of pickings.

Negredo’s 14.9% ownership base was never likely to hold onto him anyway – Boro still have to face three of the top four – but four measly points from his two Gameweek 34 outings has sparked an early, and probably rage-fuelled, exodus, with nearly 26,000 managers selling him already.

We can expect that to escalate over the next two days, though – Negredo has been sold by over 10,000 managers in the last 24 hours, more than any other player.

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean midfielder remains the game’s riskiest proposition.

Ignore him and Fantasy Premier League’s leading points scorer has six matches to show that ignorance is not always bliss.

Keep or buy him in and we’ll be betting the house – or at least a hefty 11.5 – on a player with just two goals and an underwhelming 25 points from his last six league starts.

The jury remains out on the impact Arsenal’s new formation is having on Sanchez. He was moved back to the central striker role against Leicester City, with Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil flanking him, but that didn’t improve his output.

He managed just two shots, both from outside the area, with one hitting the bar. But he has scored twice in three matches in all competitions since the switch to a defensive three took place.

Sticking or twisting on Sanchez looks like being one of the biggest decisions as we prepare for our crucial final Wildcard of the season.

Son Heung-min
The general wisdom is that we’ll need three Spurs players in our sides from here on in.

Until recently, one of them was likely to be the South Korean midfielder.

But Mauricio Pochettino has created considerable doubt in our minds now. He used Son as a wing-back in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final and benched him at Selhurst Park last night.

A half-time switch to a four-man defence gave Son a second chance and he was a key part of an improved Spurs performance after the break, but there is no place for doubt when Pochettino’s charges have just five matches left to garner us points.

With Kane, Alli and Eriksen looking undroppable, Son’s 12.2% ownership have a decision to make – over 6,000 have already jumped ship over the last 24 hours.

Mamadou Sakho
A mini-rush to tap into Palace’s defensive assets for their Double Gameweek 34 didn’t include Sakho as he was ineligible to play in the first match against parent club Liverpool.

But the Eagles are undoubtedly a far tougher proposition with the Frenchman at the heart of their defence, so the knee injury he sustained against Spurs last night weakens the attraction of holding on to relatively cheap Palace defenders throughout the run-in.

Sakho looks highly likely to have played his final match this season, according to Sam Allardyce.

“He has hyperextended the knee. It is certainly serious enough to keep him out for who knows how long, we won’t know until we diagnose it, but if it is ligament it may be the end (of his loan spell), it may not.”

Those of us with Wildcards can weather the storm, but it’s not quite so simple for the rest.

With James Tomkins also currently sidelined, those looking for a budget enabler from the Palace back line ahead of attractive home matches with Burnley and their (albeit single) Gameweek 37 clash with Hull City could well be drawn to the 4.2-priced Martin Kelly.

Wilfried Zaha
Snapped up by over 144,000 FPL managers for Palace’s pair of fixtures, Zaha proved a bitter disappointment.

While Christian Benteke backers were rewarded with 14 points over the Double Gameweek, Zaha limped in with just three points to show for his troubles, with last night’s late booking merely adding injury to insult.

Already, Zaha is the third most transferred out midfielder in the Gameweek, despite that favourable upcoming home clash with the Clarets.

Although some 17% owners may look to hold for the Burnley encounter, trips to Man City and Man United in the final three suggest that Zaha looks set to depart many more squads once the weekend has passed, particularly for those set to wield wildcards in time for Double Gameweek 36.

Son is the best option in his price bracket but will he play?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

As the article states - Sticking or twisting on Sanchez looks like being one of the biggest decisions as we prepare for our crucial final Wildcard of the season.

Is the Chilean in your plans for Arsenal's double double....or do you think you can spend the money better elsewhere?

Also will you be captaining him for the double Gameweek?

      I'm tempted to avoid too.

thing is though, as this double gameweek proved - he could be that one player that excels - as Benteke did. Miss out and its a red arrow.

I must say though the thought of going Ozil over him does appeal in terms of having an extra 2m to spend elsewhere.

Benteke had great stats and Crystal Palace had great form leading up to the DGW though. Arsenal and Sanchez don't. I think I'll still get him on my WC though. Not sold on Özil yet.

Regarding Ozil - a few people said that last season too ahead of the doubles (a season in which Ozil was actually playing quite well, unlike this season), I think he near enough blanked whereas Sanchez hovered up 25 points...

Surely captaining anyone else is a risk not worth taking.

I wish I still had my triple captain chip left for it to be honest rather than wasting it on Aguero's double gameweek.

I tripled captained Sanchez last season for his double gameweek and he got me 75 points.

Already own him and currently he doesn't prove his price. At the same time, I am scared as well if I miss out on a big haul by him. Every Arsenal match, he has been the standout player and that was visible even during last night's encounter with Leicester. Unlucky with his shot which hit the crossbar. Ozil, surprisingly, started playing deeper into the MF area after Welbeck and Giroud were deployed.

I think Ox was rested and he will remain to be one of the starters going forward in all the matches. He has had 2 back to back man of the match awards and is literally driving down that right flank. Also, Ox's major target for all his crosses was supposed to be for Sanchez. I think that proves a lot.

I am still in a dilemma and he is currently present in my draft WC but I am not completely sold on him.

Another interesting fact is that Wenger moved back to its 4 at the back formation post 60mins.

Currently weighing up whether Sanchez/Zaha or Ozil/Walcott (or Sane) is the best move for the week 36 wildcard.

Two Arsenal mids with attacking threat over four fixtures in 36/37 could be a master stroke although I feel with Walcott rotation is inevitable.

The thought of Sanchez up top though against a Stoke side on the beach and a doomed Sunderland in 37 without him in my side already fills me with dread and could be a mini league defining move.

I think I'll be keeping the faith.

    12. The Rumour Mill

There's no doubt he's not hitting the explosive heights of earlier in the season. But he is nailed on, always capable of scoring a goal out of nothing, and Arsenal do appear to have developed some grit and resolution of late, which can only be a good thing. He only needs a goal in each of the double gameweeks to bring in 18 points across 36 and 37. That's decent enough to make him worth owning, surely?

I'm lucky enough to own a wildcard still, so I'll still have Hazard, Alli, Kane, and some city cover to fall back on even if Sanchez blanks too, so I'll be keeping Sanchez to the end I think.

If anything, last night's team sheet with him playing up top convinced me that I will definitely need Sanchez for the double double, and I'll be TC-ing him in GW 36. Just to cover other sources of arsenal points, I'll be having ozil and Monreal as well.

I really hope he blanks this weekend at the NLD and more FPL managers drop him as a result. It would be great to have him as something of a differential in GW36.

If his one that hit the bar last night had gone in (fine margins) we wouldn't even be discussing this. He's essential with two back-to-back doubles - and Arsenal still need the wins - absurd to suggest otherwise IMO.

For me, the Double-Double makes him essential for a two-week captain option - he's a very attacking midfielder who often plays upfront... it's a great combo! I don't currently own him: Alli - Eriksen - Firmino - Coutinho - Siggy ... but I will once I've used my WC (keeping Alli and Eriksen only from that quintet).

      it's a fear pick.
So many people with TC that if you don't have him and captain him it could be carnage (75pts last year).
He's just one of those players that could blank the first game in DGW then run riot in the 2nd game. His ability to produce a 20+pt game is not a secret. Could easily be a 30-40pt captain for 2 weeks. That's still a season changer.
A lot of mid-low rank teams still had Costa this week (30% ownership) and many as a captain despite no double scores for 20 odd GWs and blanking for 6 GWs.

So bitter about Sanchez right now. Brought him in GW30 on an early WC, basically out of fear, and for his DGW (wasn't in my original line ups).

Over the past 5 gws he has earned me 16 points (3.8ppm) and everyone will bring him in for the double anyway. In that time King has averaged 5.8ppm, Hazard 7.8ppm, Eriksen 8.0ppm.

Have Stephens and Sanchez, may as well keep now, and will bring in Gabbiadini. Will be captaining Sanchez, but not triple captaining at this rate. Just gutted.

Have had him since that last international break, and on my WC he's currently staying in. If it was just the gw36 double I'd drop, the second one clinches it with much better fixtures.

Considering leaving him out for the NLD (get Coutinho/Firm) v Watford, and getting him back after.

I will have to bring in for Coutinho which will mean going 3-5-2 or playing 3-4-3 with two cheap strikers Gabbi and Rashford alongside Kane maybe?

Going into two double gameweeks without is scary though I will likely captain Kane in DGW37. If I get Sanchez I can't get Hazard is the deal basically.

Ownership matters. I don't think Sanchez will necessarily do well over the doubles, but I know that there is a chance he will, and his upside is higher than most. There are other potentially explosive players too that I'll end up leaving out of my WC, but they don't have high ownership and so don't worry me so much.

For me, with a relatively high TV and trying to protect a decent rank, I see keeping Sanchez as a sort of insurance - the same as my original plan to get Ibra in for DGW34 (obviously ended up not doing that because of his injury, but the thinking was the same: not that this is necessarily the very best player to maximise my points, but that I want to insulate myself from the risk of vast numbers of owners, captainers and ever triple-captainers zooming past me if the worst happens and the player in question brings in a major haul).

So despite all the very good points about Sanchez's flaws, I think he's staying for me. If I had a lower TV or was chasing a ML gap then I'd probably think differently.

Blimey, so much Sanchez fear around just because he has a history of hauls *facepalm*

He is out of form and not even worth 6m mid at this stage, let alone 11.5m for him 😳

Will be a frustrating ride with him, if only I didnt had so much issues to sort out 😮

I don't think Sanchez got booked for play acting yesterday. You're not allowed to be within 2 meters of the throw-in taker. I think that's why he got a booking. Kind of the same thing as when a player stands in the way of a free kick and get a booking when the opposition smashes the ball into him.

    Baines Yoshida Gibson (Robertson Amat)
    Sanchez Alli Son King (Carrick)
    Kane Lukaku Agüero

    0FT / 0.2ITB / No WC, only BB left.

Brought in Yoshida for Mawson allready.

I'm in a good position overall (within top 3K), but looking to defend my 60 point minileague-lead against my rival that has WC, triple captain and BB left.

Changing Aguero to Costa may be an idea if Jesus does come back into the team.

Definitely not worth a hit this week. Just see what happens this weekend first.

I worry about Son's minutes and then it is just a case of changing the likes of Amat and maybe Baines.

I would maybe just get Anichebe in for Afobe.

Afobe is a good option but in 37, Anichebe can get 4 points by just playing.

Afobe will need a goal to get just 2 points more.

Then swap Davies to Clichy and Azpi to Alonso.

Andy Carol is a joke, how hammers fans let him away with this year after year is beyond me.
he's good for about 2 months in total of a season if he's lucky.
