Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 38

The race for a top four finish looks to be vital when considering captaincy candidates for the final Gameweek of the season.

With relegation and title matters decided, the search for a motivated source of points is taking us to assets at Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, who are all vying to join Spurs and Chelsea in next season’s Champions League.

Fortunately, all three have favourable final-day fixtures, particularly Liverpool, who host an already-relegated Middlesbrough side that has shipped 13 goals in their last six – more than any other side over that period.

Philippe Coutinho’s (8.4) brace, assist and maximum FPL bonus returns against West Ham yesterday was perfectly timed to put him high on the list of potential poll leaders. With 22,251 new owners, the Brazilian is already this week’s top transfer target.

Interest in his team-mate Robert Firmino (8.6) is set to be curtailed as he continues to recover from a muscle injury that kept him out of the London Stadium clash. However, Daniel Sturridge (9.6) could present himself as a viable differential option as he also got on the scoresheet against the Hammers in what was his first start since Gameweek 20. The injury-prone marksman sits in less than 1% of FPL teams.

According to recent community analysis by Kryten and Abel Xavier, Gameweek 38 is a traditional goal-fest, with the scoring returns for this final set of fixtures far higher than the season average. This is particularly the case for the Gunners, who have scored four in this fixture over the last two seasons.

Should Arsene Wenger’s troops win against Sunderland in midweek, they will go into their final day home encounter with Everton in search of a similarly impressive scoreline in order to keep their ambitions of a seat among Europe’s elite alive.

Alexis Sanchez (11.6) looks set to lead the charge of Arsenal assets in our poll, with the 28.6%-owned Chilean likely to recover from the injury sustained against Stoke City to feature on the final day. His strike and assist against the Potters handed him his second successive double-digit points haul.

Olivier Giroud (8.0) is another who looks to have timed a return to form well as he looks to repeat his spectacular conclusion to the 2015/16 campaign, where he scored a hat-trick against hapless Villa. The 3.5%-owned Frenchman’s brace on Saturday should ensure he remains in voters’ thoughts in our latest poll, even though his starting place remains in question. Mesut Ozil (9.5) is another Gunner that found the net against Stoke who may also garner interest.

Without an away victory since Gameweek 22, the Toffees have been in an obliging mood on the road this year.

Manchester City still look good for a top four place, but can’t afford to slip up – Arsenal could still overtake them on goal difference should the London side score heavily while winning their remaining games.

This should mean Pep Guardiola will take no chances for City’s away encounter with Watford, with key players all set to start and prove popular options.

Leroy Sane’s (7.7) two assists against Leicester City at the Etihad on Saturday gives the 11.3%-owned German winger the confidence to flourish, as does Gabriel Jesus’ (8.9) converted spot kick in the same match. The Brazilian has attracted 11,000+ FPL managers since Saturday, as he snatched spot-kick duties from Yaya Toure in Sergio Aguero’s absence.

Although Kevin De Bruyne (9.8) blanked against the Foxes, a goal and four assists in as many matches beforehand suggests that he is a player that cannot be overlooked.

Benched on Saturday, question marks over 17.6%-owned Sergio Aguero’s (12.7) minutes may reduce his poll-leading potential. Although for the romantics, his 2011/12 title-winning strike against QPR may see him win votes as his side look to cement a Champions League berth.

Title winners Chelsea have nothing to play for and an FA Cup final in mind the following week, but their home clash against Sunderland could still prove fruitful as they look to embrace the party atmosphere at Stamford Bridge when they are handed the Premier League trophy.

Rotation is likely across the Blues’ final two matches, but should Antonio Conte opt to rest many of his first team regulars tonight at home to Watford,  the likes of Eden Hazard (10.6) and Diego Costa (10.5) could earn a final league run-out on Sunday.

Three goals and an assist in his last four makes the 36.1% Spanish striker a potent threat, while Hazard has a goal and assist over the same period and sits in 33.8% of FPL teams.

Attacking returns in three of his last four matches also makes the 2.9%-owned differential Cesc Fabregas (6.9) another in-form captaincy option, and with a mere 12 starts this season, he’ll certainly be fresh for the Blues’ Gameweek 38 party.

The Black Cats’ concession of nine goals in their last six indicates Chelsea should add to their 76 goals on Sunday.

Spurs have second place and Champions League football in the bag, but a visit to already-relegated Hull City, who conceded four to Crystal Palace yesterday, should ensure their attacking players are not far from the poll summit.

This is particularly the case for Harry Kane (11.7). After scoring against Manchester United in Spurs’ farewell to White Hart Lane yesterday, he is now only three goals away from leapfrogging Everton’s Romelu Lukaku for the Golden Boot. Just a fifth of FPL managers have the England striker in their teams.

Other possible poll favourites may centre around Bournemouth’s visit to Leicester, with the visitors’ top scorer Josh King (6.2) in sensational form – he has attacking returns from 10 of his last 12 matches. For the hosts, Jamie Vardy’s (9.9) similar level of consistency – with nine returns in his last 11 – makes him another strong candidate.

With 19 conceded between them in their last six matches, goals look very much on the agenda at the King Power Stadium.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 38 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Azpi has played all 90 min so far, it's possible Conte wants to give him a full 90 all season long for the record ?

              Pally as well in 93.
And I know with a few games left in 15 Mourinho was quoted about 3 or 4 of the team wanting to continue their record of playing every minute.

He will come in for Luiz Cahill or Azpi

When Alonso pulled out of the Man U game Conte did not trust Ake to take his place like he should have and played Azpi over there

It's a bit of a lottery. Nothing can do now and it's only a few hours until we'll get the teamsheet. Tonight's line up and conte's comments will hopefully give us some indication of gw38 team.

Sanchez and Koscielny a doubt, Costa, Hazard and Alonso could be rotated, Anichebe most likely out, one out of Yoshida/Stephens might be benched and I have a feeling Jesus could be benched. This could potentially become a big mess for me.

Why is everyone so negative about Jesus' playing time? He has played pretty much every minute he has been fit and has scored an average of at least a goal or assist every game. Pep loves him, he's not fatigued, and City have everything to play for.

      1. Niemi

He's just come back from a long term injury and Pep have been forced to use him more than he would have liked, I'm pretty sure he said that. Wouldn't be surprised if Jesus is fatigued.

Well he got the swollen ankle right before the last IB. Played on for half an hour limping. Went to Chile, played 180mins, came back and continued. Wenger said that time that 'it doesn't look good'

Last game, he got a kick, played on but wasnt limping like he was when got the swollen ankle. Continued running and scored an excellent goal.

My feeling is he starts. He looked much more like the Sanchez we're used to in the last 2 games, getting forward more and not sitting back at the half way line like some of the games prior..

I got Zaza (West Ham Striker) on my early season wildcard. Trebled up on West Ham.

Aguero for Burnley, and sticking with him - then going Jesus the match he was injured. 3 or 4 captaincy fails in a row.
Me and my rival were neck and neck at the time, now I am 67 k, he is in the top 250...

Haha. I got Jesus in for a hit and captained him.

It wasnt a stupid move though, Jesus was in electric form and cheap as well. The injury was unlucky. The other unlucky thing was Lukaku tearing it up at the same time. I had Kane, Zlatan and Aguero (then Jesus) and none of them got more than the occasional goal.

I did the same for Kane before he played his cup game and got injured but Thank God that didn't cost me much harm as I had Kaku captain and switched Kane for Vardy the next week

Available doesn't mean he'll start them.

I think it's very unlikely he'll risk Sanchez against the last team in the league. He'll need him fit for the cup.

At most, he'll be on the bench and will come in if the score looks bad. But I doubt that will happen.

And yes, I have him as captain 🙁

Never had a groin or hamstring injury, but a dead leg I/we can relate to.
Remember getting a dead leg in the school playground and still be able to leg it home?
And Sanchez has probably got a better thigh than you or I.
Plus he's rock solid, surely he'll play.
It's the lightweights who'd moan about dead leg.

Just found my season rank history

    2012/13 - 1,550,769
    2013/14 - 1,951,209
    2014/15 - 2,063,760
    2015/16 - 2,313,182
    2016/17 (currently) - 56,869

Used to give up/forget about it by GW3, would have been nice to compare previous ranks with this season to see how all of the discussions on here had helped me.

Also never found FFS until around GW5 this year so lots of silly decisions in first few weeks. Definitely going to try out the membership next year and see how I get on

      2014/15 - 19,212

Been an FFS member ever since I joined the work league in my first job with money at stake! Before that my mate and I had just been trying to get high scores at uni lol. Here's mine:
      2009/10: 539k
      2010/11: 578k
      2011/12: 600k
      2012/13: 899k
2013/14: 62,940 (won work league in first season - became FFS member... correlation or causality? lol)
      2014/15: 12,253
      2015/16: 2,353

Sadly not going to get top 10k this year I don't think - hoping for top 20.

Jesus 1 assist and 1 penalty which we didn't expect him to get in the last 2 games.

Can we expect big things in the next game or will he flatter to deceive?

City are so good that he is likely to get something. But the man is clearly not in form.

When he first started playing before his injury he looked electric, and so eager - stats notwithstanding. Now he looks a little lost.

If he is on penalties he will be first one into my team next season. My only negative thought is that City players will share the goals between them week in and week out and it will be hard to catch the right one in any given week

Agreed about split points - will be interesting to see the price of Sterling/Sane. I'm already eyeing up Sane as I don't think he'll increase too heavily - maybe 8.5m.

depends on who City buy in but otherwise Jesus / Sane look to be the sensible picks for the start of next season (for our FPL teams)

Exactly, and in City there will definitely be rotation involved with CL and all.
Besides, he'll probably be more expensive next season.

I'll stay away from City assets the first few games at least.

Difficult to say. Plainly he's highly thought of. He hasn't really shown why he should be in the team ahead of Aguero.

Five goals and two assists from six starts speak otherwise.

    Hi guys

So close in ML, high hopes for the rest of this double gameweek... likely to be in a position to challenge in 38!

I'm thinking Coutinho in for Sane, financed by JT in for Monreal. Perfect cash itb, giving me:

    Courtois / Pick
Bailly JT Kompany / Yoshi Holgate
    Eriksen Sanchez (C)outinho Haz King
    Jesus Kane / Anichebe
    -4, 0.0itb

Looks like a decent one to go out on, right!?

    Thanks 🙂

Surely he will in the final home game with Chelsea. The other I was considering is Rooney but I can't fit him in I don't think, don't want to lose any of the big guns there 🙂

Be more inclined to drop Kompany (playing away) or Bailly for JT or Ake to fund that move. Don't see why you'd drop Sané though, he's looked really threatening the last few weeks and Coutinho captain feels like points chasing imo.

Seems a decent punt to me, Pep. Can't see which of the other big guns I'd want to lose than Sane. I do think Liverpool now have a lot of that magical "motivation", though yeah dropping Sane seems a bit mad.

Obviously got the rest of the DGW to go, so a big injury or something will make the decision for me. Also need to see where I end up end of this DGW: if I am close I feel like I should take the risk to see if I can win it. Last time I "chased points" I got in Alli after he got a brace and I was rewarded instantly, so it can sometimes pay off - form is a thing 🙂

Just a quick question for our current gw. I have Jesus (c) & Sanchez (vc). If Jesus doesn't play the 2nd game & Sanchez does then does Sanchez get double points. Thanks.

no - Jesus has played this week, so he will remain you only captain

Lol you wish. You captained Jesus for the gameweek. He's you captain now

No, as Jesus played the first game you'll get the captaincy points from Jesus' total score.

For your vc to get double points in a dgw when you captain someone with two matches, your captain must play 0 minutes in both matches.

Well you must read it in conjunction with the other statements he made, e.g. Sanchez being a doubt and Oxlade being out.

Maverick captains over the first 15 odd weeks was my biggest flaw.

Then silly transfers like Cedric and chasing pts has cost me dear. I've learned some valuable lessons though as I've only become serious about this game since November so next year I'm hoping I'll have a little more experience to get me at least into the top 10k

This was just on the BBC:
Arsenal could be without striker Alexis Sanchez for Tuesday's match against Sunderland - he will have a late fitness test after suffering a kick to the thigh in Saturday's win at Stoke.

Defender Laurent Koscielny could also miss out after a recurrence of an ongoing calf problem

    🙁

    Sounded much more optimistic earlier
