Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Double Gameweek 37 enters its fifth day of action this evening, serving up two more fixtures to entertain Fantasy managers.

Arsenal welcome Sunderland to the Emirates in the 7.45pm kick-off as Alexis Sanchez looks to add to his goal and assist haul in Saturday’s demolition of Stoke.

Captained by 10.6% of FPL managers, the Chilean is the second most popular armband pick for the Gameweek. As expected, he has shrugged off a leg problem to start against the Black Cats, while fellow weekend scorers Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are also named in the first XI as Arsene Wenger’s side attempt to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

Man City entertain West Bromwich Albion in the second match of their Double Gameweek at 8pm.

Sergio Aguero returns to the starting XI alongside Gabriel Jesus as Raheem Sterling drops to the bench for the home side. The Argentine produced zero points as a sub at home to Leicester on Saturday, though boasting a 17% ownership, he is City’s most captained player (8.1%) for their pair of fixtures.

The top transfer target for Double Gameweek 37, Jesus rewarded his 217,000+ new owners with an eight-point haul against the Foxes, while Leroy Sane’s 7% backers will be hoping for more of the same after he delivered a season-high 11 points in the weekend win.

    Scoutcast captaincy and transfer moves

With the beach in sight we didn’t find time on last night’s Scoutcast to run through our captaincy and transfer plans.

Here’s what we would have said.

    AZ

Transfer: Most likely Tadic -> Fabregas
Captain: Fabregas if feeling brave, but most likely Sanchez

    Disable

I’ll probably use my two frees to do Trippier and Hazard (if we think Haz wont play and Trip is injured) to Coutinho and Matip and captain Kane. May take a hit to accompany but no idea what yet.

    Me

It’s all about mini-leagues in this final week. I find myself surprisingly with a slender lead in my cash mini league after over turning a 100 pt gap in recent weeks. Three can over take me and two have Hazard. I suspect at least one will get Coutinho in so I’ll probably take a gamble and bring in the Brazilian for the Chelsea midfielder. For the captaincy it’s between Sanchez and Coutinho. That decision will go down to the wire. I think Coutinho may just win that though.

Andy and Mark will let you know their thoughts later in the comment section below.

I've just hit the top 10k (9,897 is my current rank)

I'll see what I end up on by the time the weeks out but I expect I'll be in and around top 10k given that I potentially have 5 players left to go.

I'm not sure what to do with my transfers to be honest, I could do with some advice. My minileagues that I'm going to be able to win are probably won at this point so it's really rank.

Do I go for broke and try to beat my record of 8,492 or do I consolidate and just try and hold top 10k? Would only be the 2nd time in 7 years.

Captain wise I'm thinking boring - Sanchez.

Transfer wise there's the Hazard or Alli to Coutinho move a lot will make (more likely Hazard). I'm hoping for confirmation on a start from Conte.

Otherwise I could do Hazard+Anichebe to 4.3m mid and Costa (-4) and captain Costa.

Kane to Sturridge would really be the lets go for it transfer for me, maybe even Hazard+Kane out for Coutinho+Sturridge (-4).

I'm just in 2 minds about how safe to play it right now. If I go for it and mess it up I finish outside the top 10k and no-one remembers that it's mostly because I went for it. If I play boring I probably get in top 10k but potentially wonder what could have been.

If it's rank your after just work out the points difference at the end of the gw from how far away from 5k you are. If it's achievable then go for it, if not then play safe.

Definitely try to stay in top 10k. Improving your best finish by few hundread places wont mean much (imo) as finishing in top 10k. You'll beat yourself up if you finish 10.100 for example

        Hi Andy,

I had this conundrum last season so thought I would way in.

I was in the exact same position (~9k) and decided to go for it and TC Andy C in 37 over Payet. I've regretted not playing it safe every day as I fell to 15k.

I would suggest to play it safe and bank a top 10k finish mate.

        Good luck!

I would wait until the dust settles and see where you are at the end of the GW. You might well be above your best ever finish before the shenanigans of GW38 begin.

In any case, I would go for broke, especially if your mini leagues are in the bag.

You've made it this far by playing aggressively after a poor start and I don't see why you should change tactics now. I would be really miffed if (example) Sturridge scored a hattie and I didn't have the balls to go for him.

You've gotta think that everyone in the 10-15k range that is chasing the top 10k will do something against the grain. I'm in this pack and thinking about Hazard -> Fab, King -> Coutinho (-4) and Alonso (C). If lots do things like this and it works out well, playing safe won't necessarily guarantee a top 10k spot!

I like your hazard moves to captain costa, who will go for it, pending conte press conf

I think I'll just be doing Hazard to Phil or Kevin unless Conte confirms he will start, which he won't do because he's always vague as you like

kane coming out regardless of anything else seems like madness when chasing golden boot, but that's just me

        Hi Andy,

        Echoing a bit everyone here.
I've dropped out of top 5K last season - 6117 finish - by captaining Tadic on the last day. It's not a good feeling. I'd say play safe such as Hazard> Cout and captain Sanchez or Kane

Every time people think about these things, I can just say that do what you think will get you the most points... When it comes to the last game week of the season, play your game, never play safe with regard to other players... Cause, to be frank, safe in just 1 game week does not exist in this game...

Hi Jonty-I have a question I've been meaning to ask the scoutcast team for a while but basically been too much of a lurker to get involved-It may be common knowledge to many but I'm just wondering why all deadlines are now an hour before kick off & we no longer have gw deadlines 15mins before at 7:30pm for example during midweeks fixtures. I remember you use to be one to wait for team sheets to help with selections at times-so why have they stopped this?Indeed why don't they just do 15mins to go before 1st game kick offs for all of the 38 gws?Or even better why not just deadlines at the exact kick off times of the 1st game like I think they do in games like Sky & The Sun?I mean it would be such a help in particular for this final gw to have knowledge of all the 20 team sheets before you make your final transfers & pick your team!I suspect it's now always an hour before as the FPL bosses want to play into the hands of the casuals more-but I'm really interested to know if they have any set rules or reasons for this & whether or not they might change them in the future to give us all as much information as we can possibly get!My rank is currently 407 & I'm having my best season to date. I'm still dreaming of trying to get into the Top 100 this season but I estimate I'll need to gain atleast 20-30 points in the final week to have any slim chance at all. Therefore I'm looking at moves like Hazard>Fabregas & Gabbiadini>Sturridge & maybe captaining Sturridge as a differential for example-but it just seems such a risk given his injury record & not being nailed on. It's a problem that could be so easily fixed this Sunday by later deadlines rather than hanging on every word of a managers presser & trying to decipher exactly what they are thinking & planning!Apologies for the essay I've just written but I'd really appreciate it if you or anyone else could drop me a few lines back if you have any information about deadlines etc....

I guess the previous midweek deadlines were errors that they have now eradicated to bring in line with the others.

Makes sense - although was nice and handy when we had that 15 min window ; -)

Yer I'm just speculating they want to make the game as casual as they can by taking away the advantage keener players would have in this area-or maybe the FPL computer system just needs the extra time to update properly-but I think everyone should really try & push them to be more progressive with the deadlines being at kick offs times-I mean most other games have it whether it's Fan Duel, Sky or even smaller App games like Six-a-Side!It just seems rather backwards for what is after all the biggest and best fantasy game. More time would probably actually even help alot of casuals to remember to make changes especially all the hungover ppl on Saturday mornings than could use an extra hour....

Delighted to be up to 130k from 1.6m at Xmas. Damage limitation!

I think I'll captain Sanchez and not even use my FT as I have zero funds! The only thing I can do is swap Hazard out but knowing him that move will bite.

3-5-2 with Capoue or 4-4-2 with Yoshida is my call?

It's just a nice round figure, and a target to aim at and remember - like a century in cricket.
Easier than top 1k but more difficult than top 100k.
Most serious players are probably capable of achieving it sometimes, but not every time.

Ok, haven't really ever worried about my rank as I play in a few ML's so only concentrate on points total ... Just seen my OR is 6,687 but don't feel celebratory - Still 6,686 people better at this game than me. Probably would only be happy to come in the top 1K, a three figure finish has a nice ring to it.

So 6,686 people have been more successful than yourself this season to date. Next season the number will be either greater or smaller, so it doesn't really show how many of the 4.5m players are better than you, but you have been more successful than the many who have never finished that high.

A top 10k finish is a target that most serious players can feel they have a chance of reaching. Some achieve it once or twice, some play for years without reaching it, and a few achieve it fairly frequently.

Top 1k is another popular target. I've been aiming at that for years, but have so far only managed two top 4k finishes. The number of players who have had a top 1k finish is obviously far smaller than the number who have finished in the top 10k.

2nd season in a row TC has destroyed BB. Definitely will put way more emphasis on picking sweet pick for TC rather bowing down to the BB chip.

And before anyone says of course we scored well it was a DGW afterall.

Sanchez TC, for example, brought home an extra 27 points. That's way more than anyone proper bench score and don't forget this was a bench designed to score 'well', there's no way we'd have Cech, Pickford and Cab etc. without BB.

I don't know about "way more". Coutinho, Pickford, Zaha, King, Capoue, Saints defenders, McAwful all genuine bench options this week and could have produced upwards of 27 points together. Not to mention TC Sanchez last week was worth 14 points...

People saying that are wrong though. The difference between captaining Sanchez and triple captaining Sanchez is a lot less than Bench Boost for many.

Agreed. The difference for me currently is 2 pts - 9pts (Kun TC) + whatever I would have earned on my BB week. Doubt it would be much more than 10pts difference

Exactly, prime TC picks this week other than Sanchez (KdB, Costa, Aguero, Jesus, Spurs depending upon tonight) didn't necessarily out score prime benches.

It all depends upon how you set up your team and shed loads of good fortune

If the season was played again Aguero in 27 would still be the best choice .... without hindsight ...

My proper bench boost of Cech, Holding, King and Capoue scored 34 so worked out for me. Would have been even more had it not been for Crouch's successful Maradona impression.

I think there are other weeks where a triple captain chip can be used effectively, but GW37 was by far the best week to use a BB on.

my BB got me 22pts this week and could of been 27 only for holgate to get withdrawn at HT.
So TC sanchez would only have gotten me 5 extra points
used TC in 36 so sanchez got me 14 and BB would have gotten me 12
so overall happy i used BB this week

Again, I'd say that was subjective. For Sanchez TCers in this gameweek, sure - but not everyone did this. There are plenty of Costa TCers this week too - and I believe their bench boosts were better.

It's 11 points difference so far between TC Sanchez and my BB this week, wouldn't say that's destroyed. Stephens potentially to come as well.

I still think tc has far more potential to kill your opponent than bb does. Sanchez would have got you 54 pts more than someone who hadn't captned him this week if your tc. Bb mainly about getting cs! I managed to get 37 pts from bench boost in gw34. Maguire Davies Sanchez and de gea. Freed me up for gw37!

if i had captained Aguero (instead of TC'd) and TC'd Sanchez (when I captained him) then the difference is 18pts. Got 16 pts so far on BB with 2 benched players to go so it's going to be about even at worse.
Obviously doesn't make an allowance for when I would have used BB earlier but my bench score when I TC'd Aguero was 12 pts.
Highest bench score was 31pts but that was the week I played my WC. Have had 8 scores over 15pts on bench but on 4 of those a player came on anyway for injury/rotation.

I just think the late DGW's make using a BB a risk given rotation where at least with TC, it's likely you have some teams still chasing various prizes and finishes and can pin point a potential big haul player. I think in future I will try and use a BB in an earlier DGW. Be interested to see it backtested.

I remember you at one time had over 200k rank and look at you now going for top 5K finish . Brilliant second half .

I guess first monitor how far you are from Top 5K after GW ends and then analyze.

Looking to finish TOp 10K myself too in my first season . also having a great second half

When is Alli gonna deliver again? Was he any good last two games?

Really need him to do something in next two as I got him with my WC and got two blanks from him as I didn't want to get Sane that my rival got as I was chasing back then.

Cheers mate, a brace from him would probably win me my ML, otherwise it's gonna be a nail biting GW38 for sure.

    A. Lallana, Sigurdsson, Willian or Fabregas?

They will be my replacement for Hazard.

    B. Also, do we think Sturridge will play again this weekend? Thinking about bringing him in as a gamble.

Thanks. Why do you think Pedro will score more? Fabregas has the better form even when coming on as sub.

    Alonso Hazard Costa

Likelihood of game time for these 3?

I can keep Alonso on bench when I play AOA. But may need to get rid of Hazard or Costa.

I think Hazard will be rested and the other two will get some game time to keep them match fit for the final, considering they did not play on Monday.

FPL is about getting the right players at the right time they say. I have Sanchez most season so I could not complain.

I backed Kane at the wrong time, trusting with the armband in his two home games against Burnley and Hull. Enjoyed his Watford haul soon after but sold him before he even played that week, missing his HTs in the coming weeks. I got him before BOU game just in time for his haul but it is astonishing to learn that those two home games in which he blanked (HULL, BUR) are only times when I captained him this season.

Maybe I trusted Sanchez and Kun too much (ignoring some like Costa, Vardy and even Kane) and should learn to adapt to changes a new season brings.

I sold Kun early. It was a nice differential and allowed so many upgrades throughout the squad

You did a good thing. I had him most GWs. My most captained player according to stats but didn't have him for Boro game before which I bought Gabbiadini and c'ed him 🙁
That Kun - Negredo (DGW) - Gabbiadini moves were the worst I made this season probably.

5th in my ML, top 4 paid. 15 points behind.
I have 2FT and I feel like I will go all in with 2 picks who need to be differential.
So far I Have a front 7 of

    King - Sané - Pedro - Sanchez - Alli
    Kane - Jesus

Fabregas and COutinho will probably be the two most mainstreamed transfer this GW.

Regardless of money (I'll spew anyway) who are the 2 or 3 players you think can haul in GW38 and who are suprising in-transfers?

my first thoughts go towards Sturridge and Vardy
