Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Man United

After Alexis Sanchez ended Double Gameweek 37 with a season-high 27 points, Wednesday night’s meeting at St Mary’s has a lot to live up to.

Southampton entertain Manchester United in the penultimate showdown of a seven-day round of fixtures, and it’s fair to say that Claude Puel and Jose Mourinho both owe us a favour after their recent penchant for rotation scuppered many best-laid wildcard plans.

The Saints’ boss reinstalls a number of regulars after the 2-1 win at Middlesbrough on Saturday. Snapped up by 40,000+ and 27,000+ respectively for their second successive Double Gameweek, Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini return to the first XI along with the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Cedric Soares.

Despite mustering just a single assist in his last six league outings, Gabbiadini is his side’s most captained player, with 15,000+ handing him the armband for the Double.

Fantasy faith in United is at a low as Mourinho looks to keep his main men fresh with one eye on next week’s Europa League final against Ajax.

Marcus Rashford continues to be used sparingly on the domestic stage and is handed a third successive appearance on the bench, though Wayne Rooney is named in the first XI for the fourth successive league outing.

Having found the net in three of his last four Gameweek appearances, the Red Devils’ skipper is the most captained FPL asset among Mourinho’s starting line-up, with almost 28,000 affording him the armband.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Trying to retain a 12 point lead. Thoughts on :

    Alli to Coutinho
    Benteke to Llorente
    Kane to Vardy

How many FTs? Giving up 8-12 pts on transfers is not a great start.

Certainly not before we see where spurs are tonight. Wouldn't suggest getting rid of Alli or Kane. And points hit is foolish when all of the players you're dumping could burn you.

I'd prefer Kane to vardy and Benteke to llorente (assuming Benteke is fit), so do Alli to coutinho only.

Don't take a hit mate would be my advice. Alli to Coutinho only. Am in a similar situation (though retaining 2nd; 1st is waaay too far ahead) and am doing Eriksen to Cout and preserving pts

I'd probably keep both Alli and Kane. Benteke to Origi maybe for Liverpool coverage.

No of those pressers matter to me but that's not the reason I post it. It informs people what's on today and what's on tomorrow. It might even cut down the amount of "When is the Chelsea presser?" Posts etc. Although I realise that's unlikely.

My only goal in GW38 is to beat the AVERAGE. With this in mind would you do

    A) Gabbi to Llorente
    B) Kane to Costa
    C) Alli to Coutinho
    D) Kompany to Matip

or a combination of the 2 for -4. Not really feeling a hit as I dont want to give the AVERAGE a head start

A and B no, because their season is done, and Kane is up for the golden boot
C imo is the only option out of these. Coutinho is a bit unpredictable though, and L'pool have a reputation for bottling it (not sure this year though), so a risk, but one worth taking.

      I am planning C myself.
Spurs will be tired, as they have the shortest break, so I will watch the game tonight and evaluate myself.
Hull will be rested and with nothing to loose to will attack. I have seen tired Spurs after cup game against Bournemouth, was. 0:0.
I have Eriksen/All to Coutinho (growning ownership and many will captain him), so he is the must have for the gw38 imo.
But I like A also with Llorente. Have you considered Okazaki as a punt?

4.5m players in fpl now, could next year be the first in which we surpass the 5m mark?

Also are people anticipating any big changes to the game next season? Personally id want a re-evaluated and transparent system for price changes as well as replacing the Aoa chip with a more useful one

    1. Pep says
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I think the price rises have been fine for the 2nd 2/3 of the season. Lot of new players this year put it into overdrive and probably gave up when they were doing rubbish.

I personally don't want to see any changes brought in unless it involves dumping the chips. I can't see this happening though.

    2. athreya

Transparent system for price changes not going to happen. Still fpl price changes are
UCB more rational than other leagues like la liga and bundesliga.

I would advocate going back to one wild card per season. To make the game more challenging. Maybe it can be offset by alllowing carry forward of 2 transfers.

      1. Pep says
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

They don't want to make the game challenging, they want it to easy and fun. Not giving a 2nd WC will cause more players to give up during the season. I don't disagree with you, I'm just saying this.

    3. Gangster Panda

The season started with about 3,200,000 players so quite the increase (40%). A big influx in the new year then lots of 2nd teams & gw rank chasers among all the additions.
I'd expect next season to start with perhaps a little more, with similar increases throughout.

Price changes are still a head scratcher & I expect them to remain so, the prediction sites will take several gw's to adjust to any new algorithms if they change much.

United will receive up to 25% of any future transfer fee for Michael Keane. If they were to buy him they'd get a chunk of their own money back.

Given how good he's been for Burnley this season, do you think he's good enough for United? And will Jose go for him?

I'm interested in hearing non-Man United fans thoughts on this.

He seemed to be getting a lot of praise this season so I'm happy enough with the purchase I think.

Now the transfer seems to be getting nearer though people are saying £25m is far too much. If we get 25% back though I think it's probably about normal for a young English player. Also seems to have a good injury record (granted he hasn't had to play Europe etc)

I think United are still suffering from all the average players bought when LVG was in charge. Don't think they will threaten the title next season, but with the money they have and the manager they have it is only a matter of time.

Don't think be much of an upgrade at all on Smalling and Jones really to be honest.

On the plus side he has proven himself to be a decent PL level CB already. And he is already familiar with the club so there wont be any settling in period.

Good enough if United want to consolodate 6th not good enough if they wait to challenge for the title and in Eurpoe. £25m (or £18m) is ridiculoulsy overpriced. If they actually employed scouts thed see theres much better (cheaper) options across Europe.

Mourinho offers far more hope than LvG did I think for the future.

How we're playing now isn't quite how it's been for the season. Ibra getting injured hasn't helped.

We're currently resting players for the EL, next year should be better. If he blows the final though then it will have been a very poor season all in all.

          - LVG was a borefest from start to finish. That team barely created a chance all game. Apart from the last few weeks Jose's United have created loads but failed to put away the chances.

          - LVG flopped in his second season, this is Jose's first.

          - CL qualification via EL win would be better than finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th. You don't get a trophy by finishing 2nd-4th. Season would be a total flop if the EL final isn't won though. Win the final and 2 trophies + CL qualification would make it a very good season.

          - Jose is a proven winner. LVG was an outdated dinosaur and if he still was in charge United would be in a lot worse condition.

He gave United some great wins against big rivals (unlike Jose who parks the bus every time), won a FA Cup and gave some young players like Rashford a chance.

Given Mourinho spent 150 odd million on players in the summer then it's very disappointing and very hard to see any progress being made there.

Spurs need a bigger squad to cope with their style of play and all the extra fixtures. They've been lucky this season on the injury front. A long term replacement for Vertonghen is needed as well.

The thing with Spurs is that there is a vast amount of player that can play in different positions. This is why you think they have been 'lucky' on the injury front this season.

In fact, its the opposite to that.

        * Kane has missed 10 weeks in total.
        * Toby A missed 10 games in a row (in all comps) similar time Kane was out...
        * Danny Rose has missed 20 league games also!
        * Lamela has been out since November (but I guess that may be a good thing) 🙂

It's about squad depth for them IMO. They desperately need genuine cover for Kane (or to play alongside him if tactics need a tweak).

Whoever they sign, they'd struggle to do worse than circa 50M for Sissoko & Janssen last year.

If you took away all of Romelu Lukaku's 24 goals in the Premier League this season, Everton would still be 7th, 7 points clear of West Brom.
