Selection

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 38

With this afternoon’s Fantasy Premier League deadline edging ever closer, it’s now time to reveal our final differential selections of the season.

There are no second chances after today – our options simply must produce in a one-week scenario, so we’ve turned to three forwards with potentially prosperous home fixtures in the hope they can deliver big hauls to provide a final push.

Daniel Sturridge

For those Fantasy bosses really prepared to roll the dice, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge looks the perfect route on offer.

The Reds forward is sat in just 1.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads, and crucially, Jurgen Klopp’s side go into the final day with plenty of motivation, with a victory at home to Middlesbrough guaranteeing them a top four finish.

Liverpool should also be full of confidence after dispatching West Ham United 4-0 last weekend, with Sturridge a key figure on his return to the starting XI.

The England international opened the scoring at the London Stadium and produced four goal attempts in total, with three arriving from inside the box, while also creating two chances in an effervescent display.

Sunday’s showing reminded us that, on his day, Sturridge is an explosive Fantasy asset, with all the tools to hit the double-figure mark.

Sturridge could also hardly ask for a more favourable match-up to end the season.

No side have conceded more goals than Boro (11) over the last four Gameweeks, while they also rank first for the most shots conceded inside the box (52) and big chances allowed (12) over the same period.

Steve Agnew’s men also have nothing to play for, with relegation back to the Championship already confirmed.

Available at 9.7 in FPL, Sturridge looks to tick all the differential boxes. And placing the captain’s armband on the Liverpool forward could certainly pay off handsomely should he get the opportunity to build on his display against the Hammers.

The potential return to fitness of Roberto Firmino presents a caveat and makes the move something of a gamble. However, after such an impressive performance with a front two last Sunday, Klopp will surely be tempted to preserve Sturridge and strike partner Divock Origi for Boro’s visit, regardless of the Brazilian’s availability.

Sam Vokes

At the other end of the price spectrum is Burnley’s Sam Vokes, who sets us back just 5.7.

The Wales international has been in convincing form of late, scoring four goals in his last four Gameweek starts, and enjoys his own favourable match-up at home to Liverpool’s victims last weekend – West Ham.

As mentioned, Slaven Bilic’s men really struggled in their 4-0 home defeat last time out and will travel to Turf Moor without the significant influence of centre-back Winston Reid.

The New Zealand international is one of several key absentees for a Hammers side that has managed just two clean sheets on their travels all season, so Vokes looks to have the ideal platform on which to maintain his late-season momentum.

The Clarets forward has registered an impressive 30 penalty box touches and 11 shots from inside the box over his last three appearances, and with his confidence levels sky-high, is primed for another strong showing.

Over 34,000 FPL bosses have already drafted in the target man prior to today’s deadline, but he’s still only owned by 3.0%.

Vokes looks unrivalled as a final-day acquisition for those seeking goals on a budget.

Charlie Austin

While Sturridge and Vokes have form heading into Gameweek 38, it’s reputation and a promising home fixture against Stoke City that sees Southampton’s Charlie Austin get the nod as our final selection.

The Saints forward returned from a shoulder injury as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough last weekend, and following another disappointing outing from Manolo Gabbiadini in the goalless draw against Manchester United, Austin should see some minutes this afternoon.

Taking a chance on the English striker clearly comes packaged with plenty of risk given that he hasn’t started a match since Gameweek 14. But his pedigree, along with the fact he’s only sat in 1.8% of FPL squads, does make him an intriguing option.

Despite a lengthy absence, Austin is still Southampton’s second leading scorer this season with six goals.

His appeal is also boosted by Stoke’s disappointing form heading into the final day.

The Potters have won just one of their last 10 matches and have conceded eight goals in their last four encounters.

With Austin’s outstanding predatory instincts on offer and Southampton’s dire need for a final day cutting edge, it may be worth taking a gamble on the 6.3-priced forward as the ultimate Gameweek 38 punt.

Yes. Still think Conte will play the 'title-wining' team today.

Selling Hazard, against the bottom team, at home, seems very risky!

Trying to work out my opponents transfer - when I look at their "squad value" on the FPL site, is that reflective of their gross player value, or tranferable value?

i.e. If he'd already done his sub on Friday and it didn't go up on Friday night I know it's not Cout of Fabregas as they went up on Friday night....

    Right?

Not even sure it changes my plans, I just want to know what he's done so I feel smart!!!

It's a risk taking a hit in last gw. Coz you only.have one match to recover the hit.

Keep or sell tadic?? been a massive letdown through the dgw's but has a plum home fixtures and could be a very good differential in my tight ML's. Will he even start? thats another concern

    Willy -- pickford
Alonso Yoshida Kosc -- Stephens Kompany
    Sanchez king eriksen hazard tadic
    costa jesus --- anichebe

    A: Haz + Tadic >> Coutinho + Siggy/Mahrez
    B: Haz + Tadic >> Coutinho + Siggy
    C: Haz + Anichebe >> Carroll + Sturridge..and play 3-4-3
D: Haz + Anichebe + Kompany >> Carroll + Kane + Tuanzebe (-4)...involves a hit but i bring in kane to cover both my rivals

I've got it on Kane, although I'm wary that he'll only have had 2 days full rest and it's an away game.

Him, Jesus Coutinho and Sanchez are all good options.

I can't be caught in any of my leagues (other than FFS which I'm not leading in) so my only objective left is to try and finish inside the top 5k, so I have no need to take punts.

      Still undecided.

My main goal is a cash mini league lead to hang on to. I've a 20 pt lead and my rival has taken two hits. I'm pretty sure One or both of Sanchez and Coutinho are involved. He already has Kane.

I think I'll be getting Coutinho in as an option for the armband but am likely to go for Kane- its his comments about wanting to score more and protect the golden boot that I've factored in plus his form and Hull being without Maguire most likely.

Sanchez and Coutinho both strong options as well but I think with my lead to protect I'm going safe with Kane.

It would be fitting for my successful dullard end to the season to captain Kane and ditch these maverick urges of earlier in the campaign for good. 🙂

He seems to have quite specific targets but its not just his words its his actions. He clearly wants more looking at his huge amount of shots and most importantly goals.

It may be that if Coutinho and Sanchez were interviewed more that would have more insight.

If Sanchez said - Kane has scored four in a match - and so can I to overtake him - then that would turn my head certainly.

But above all Kane is the safe option re my particularly situation. I'm very certain my rival will captain him.

1 crucial FT is left, wanna play safe for my mini league.

Similar situation to me. I'm 24 points at the top of my cash league and myself and my chase both have Sanchez Kane Jesus. I've got Coutinho in for Hazard but I think he'll do the same. So tough choice this week. I was set on Sanchez until Kane went that did, well, that!

Switching between Sanchez and Kane, currently on Kane.

Both have a bit of form, both chasing Golden Boot.

Have had it on Coutinho all week as they have to beat your beloved Middlesborough Jonty!

But have Kane, Sanchez, Jesus to ponder also!

Mini leagues look sown up after GW37 - I'm sitting around 12k rank so trying to get into top 10k for 2nd season in a row.

Might just stick with Coutinho - but would you bring in Firmino for King as a double up?

      Cheers!

I may still switch to Coutinho. I like him alot this week....but its that spread of points at Liverpool that is a very slight concern. I think he's the most likely to score for them, but could easily be 5-0 with Sturridge hattrick, Wij and Milner penalty with perhaps an assist for Phil.

Kane — having watched Thursday's match, it's easy to visualize another four at the KCOM today.

I am 13 pts ahead of last place but he still has Branch boost.

Thinking of Captaining Kane as I dare not after last week.

The loser this year has to have a tattoo of the winners choice so it's squeaky but time.

The way I see it is who would you fear NOT having the armband on come 3pm. I think that's Kane for me.

Also, I am 411th and want to finish top 500, so for once I am being a little influenced by the popular vote

      Kane.

Have 70+ point leads in both my mini leagues so the only target for me now is to try and make up 552 places and finish in the top 5000.

No need for me to take risks or hits, so it's Kane for me.

Kane, my rival has openly, said,he will triple captain him so that takes the sting out of anything he does.

We've both agreed to do Hazard to Coutinho and let the rest of our teams battle it out!

    Caballero
    Koscielny - Alonso - Yoshida - Stephens
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Eriksen
    Costa - Jesus

    Subs: Cech, Capoue, Anichebe, Maguire

2FT. Hazard>Coutinho and Maguire>someone, then bench Stephens? Or Alli out instead of Maguire?

As mini leagues draw to a close, some leafing, some chasing, who is the one player you are worried about today. I'll start with Harry Kane. Similar team as my rival but my 24 point lead could easily evaporate if he goes (c) and Kane goes berserk.

If you could make just one change to FPL rules for next season, what would it be and why? Mine would be an adjustment to encourage more transfers either by increasing to two free transfers each gameweek or halfing the hit from four points to two points. I feel this would make the game a great deal more dynamic and enjoyable.

Don't penalise strikers for missed shots on goal - it is their trade to shoot, shoot and shoot

Lose points for conceding penalties (deliberate infringement) stop losing points for OGs (blind bad luck)

Yeah OGs are by definition never deliberate, sometimes clumsy of course but often just totally unavoidable.

      Defender assist - 4 points
      Forward assist - 3 points
      Midfielder assist - 2 points

Just like how it's built into the scoring system that it's the forwards' job to score and so they get least rewarded for doing that; it should be built in that it's the midfielder's job to create the scoring chances.

And also id like to see GK getting an extra point for clean sheets than defenders.

And the accounting of stoppage time minutes as well for the appearance points.
