Crabtree Clinches FPL Crown

In yet another tense final day, Ben Crabtree has been crowned the Fantasy Premier League champion for 2016/17.

Nestled in the top ten since Gameweek 28, Ben – who made just a single four-point hit in the final 11 Gameweeks –
claimed top spot for the first time in the very final round of fixtures.

Trailing Uwais Ahmed by two points heading into today’s deadline, Ben went ahead before kick-off following Uwais’ four-point transfer hit.

That saw Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho swapped in for Spurs’ Dele Alli and Leroy Sane of Manchester City – trades that would eventually prove decisive in the battle at the top.

Ben – with two free transfers – made equally radical transfer moves, shifting out Eden Hazard and Victor Anichebe for Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas and Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Starting on Ben’s bench, the Cherries midfielder was the makeweight for the gutsy signing of Costa, although, on the day, it was Stanislas who was to prove the unlikely hero.

He scored the opening goal of the day and, with Josh King in Ben’s starting XI but missing out through injury, those points from the bench helped him extend an early lead.

The Stanislas strike, together with assists from Christian Eriksen and Leroy Sane, saw Ben seize a 12-point advantage heading into half-time.

While Uwais quickly countered with early second-half goals from his signings Lallana and Coutinho, Ben edged further ahead with an assist from his own Gameweek 38 capture, Costa.

The tide looked to be turning back in Uwais’ favour when Cesc Fabregas produced one of two assists in the second period. However, Ben Davies’ strike for Spurs on 84 minutes in their 7-1 rout of Hull City was to deal the killer blow.

While Uwais edged the bonus points on the final whistle, the two awarded to Stanislas on Ben’s bench, introduced as the auto-sub for King, were to take him to a final tally of 97. That surpassed Uwais final tally by three points on the day, and by a five-point margin in the overall ranks.

A proven FPL manager of some pedigree, Ben bettered his previous best rank of 353rd back in the 2011/12 season to become the FPL’s latest champion.

Huge congratulations go to Ben from all at Fantasy Football Scout, and also to Uwais who fought a valiant battle to give us a dramatic final day.

Elsewhere, Bibek Thapa from Nepal stormed to a 99 – 68 victory over Polish manager Peter B to claim the FPL cup.

Many congratulations go to Bibek.

We will have further post-season coverage coming up in the next 24-hours, as we round up the winners of this season’s Scout Leagues and Cups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

            Haha, cheers. Managed a red arrow in Australian league with 97. Getting Negredo(c) over Benteke(c) was the difference in the end or my 2 late transfers on WC in GW36.

        Too late to join this season, and it's really for teams that have had a top 10k finish before the current season.
        But your top 10k finish this season (well done!) makes you eligible for it next season.

        I will be advertising it again shortly after the FPL launch for the 2017-18 season, but I won't know the new code till then.

    I finished the season with a final score of 92 and rank of 2951. In the biggest money league I played I finished up level on points but won for using fewer transfers than my rival. Food for thought next season.. Overall $1500 profit and I am now champion of Bouvet Island 🙂 Thanks to everyone and roll on next season!

    Some more random thoughts on my season - as I've said earlier, I'm very happy with my 2k rank, but it's a bit strange because I didn't really feel like I nailed any particular decision too often. I spent the first half of the season between 100k and 200k, and started climbing in the second half.

    My place in the top 10k was only really cemented during the double gameweeks. In general, I feel like I was a pretty average player most of the season who just used DGW knowledge and experience to beat managers who made better calls over the entire season, only to come undone during the DGW madness.

        True that. It was the GW28 blank that kick-started all the green arrows.

            In all fairness, you were already high enough that any further climbs were a lot harder than for someone in the 40-50k area like me.

              More about the points scored during those weeks than the rank. Last 2 GWs helped but the rest were average.

          No not at all Pierce
          I think I understood that you are a bit of a purest and think/believe the chips sort of cheated you to a much higher rank.
          Your post is very respectable.

            I guess more of an impostor syndrome - I felt lots of other managers were better at bold punts, I was just good at playing the percentages for the most part. And yes, I guess the overall sentiment is that of a purist, which is ironic since I only started playing the game last year and haven't known any different in terms of chips!

      I think that's normal. Despite the bravado you see on here on game day, the truth is that the bad decisions tend to stick with people longer than the good ones. I ended up 612 OR and, instead of feeling good about it, wonder where I would have been had I not avoided Heaton and Alonso pretty much all season.

      In some ways, that's what will bring me back next year - always trying to learn from the past and get better.

      Congrats on the solid season.

        Thanks, you too. That's an amazing rank, especially considering you did it without Heaton and Alonso!

        Similar thoughts for me, i.e. what would've been had I not managed to avoid all of Hazard's hauls, had I not captained Kane exclusively during blanks etc.

      34) 59 -4
      36) 105 -4
      37) 169
      Total 458 (-12) 446

        Kane has a much better points per game. Just need to find a good vc (maybe King) for the injury etc. Just realised Alonso doesn't qualify actually.

          Lukaku VC nicely covers a lot of the games where Kane didn't play, only blanks in two i think and some pretty decent scores.

      How would Son work out as a VC? When he plays he usually does well and deputized for Kane

      Heaton(4.5) 149 Pickford(4) ?
      Cahill(6) 178 Coleman(5.5) 133, Sakho, Ake, another big scorer
      Sanchez(11) 264, King, Alli, Eriksen, Capoue or something
      Kane(11)(c) 448, Lukaku(9) 221, some cheap random

      Grant as reserve goalie, he's 4.0 and Heaton missed 3 games and Grants scores in them were 7, 8 and 7 again.

            Hennessey has 0 / 7 / 6 in the games Heaton misses, which beats Pickford for the same price, can't think of anyone better.

    Well that was very nearly my worst season of FPL ever. At Gameweek 34 I was sat at 424,266 it forced me to wildcard earlier than I would have liked. Somehow I got good scores for the rest of the season and scrambled in at 97,923.

    It was pretty damn dire at times and failure just seemed to breed failure as you tried to fix it. I am going to have to take a little think about tactics as it wasn't much fun doing that poorly

        Obvoiusly the whole Sky thing kept me positive but it is surprising quite how bad I was doing in the other format at the same time

    This is my firdt season and joined in gw 3.

    In my work ML I was 280 points behind the leader at some point when I started to follow this site. I was determined to win.

    Today I was 41 points behind when the games started and I scored 83 points (-4)

    My rival scored 54 so I was just 16 points short in the end!

    Two decisions would have given me the title:

    - cap Kane instead of Cout
    - not doing Alli -> Siggy for a hit

    That was so close! I can't believe it!

    Well the important thing is that I had fun and learned a lot from you!

    Started around 4.4 million OR and ended around 900k

    My team value was 111.9 in the end

    It was a great season!

    Thanks a lot for the articles, sharing your knowledge, for your insights, the scout casts, the jokes, and to all the community for the help!

    See you next season!

    Good morning all.

    Thank you everyone for your help.
    Won my mini league and OR personal best.

    Summary of my OR.
    GW4 = 2.6m (WC in GW5)
    GW10 =730k
    GW29 = 100k
    GW35 = 76k (WC)
    GW38 = 19,953

    Best decision : buying and selling McAuley, Costa and Lukaku at the right time, Alonso, Coleman instead of Baines, Jesus, Kane
    Worst decision : Phillips, Chadli, Capoue, Siggy, too late getting King in, Gabbiadini, JWP, too many to mention tbh

    First of all congrats to everyone who won their ML's/achieved their desired rank.
    For those who missed out,hard luck but good luck for next season,It all comes down to some marginal decisions.
    And thanks to everyone here who has helped me get a good rank by my standards was 1.9 million in GW 17 and then I joined FFS and finished the season at.141 K 😀
    Once again good luck to everyone for next season and have a great 3 months(although its the worst time of the year)

    My first ever top 10k finish with a rank of about 1.2k. My decision not to bring in Kane for GW38 cost me a top 1k finish but it was the only way I was going to catch my ML leader. Unfortunately it didn't pay off. Oh well, set the bar for next season!

      Very well done. ML chasing can hurt overall rank alright, usually based on the need to get the diff captain pick correct.
