FFS – League & Cups Round-up

Sunday’s goalfest brought the curtain down on the 2016/17 season, giving us time to assess the main performers in our Fantasy Football Scout leagues and cups over the last 10 months of domestic action.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Jon Pears claimed top spot in the Fantasy Football Scout league in Fantasy Premier League after serving up 94 points in Gameweek 38.

Captain Harry Kane contributed 34 points and was joined by Manchester City trio Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne, who delivered a combined 26 points in the 5-0 rout over Watford.

In his eleventh season as an FPL manager, John also has Philippe Coutinho, Gary Cahill and Petr Cech to thank for a further 20 points as he climbed into fifth spot in the overall standings. That’s a career-high rank, with his previous best placing 1,029 back in 2012/13.

David Brundish grabbed the runners-up spot after returning an outrageous 304 points in the final two Gameweeks of the season.

After picking up 186 points in Double Gameweek 37, David unleashed his Triple Captain chip on Harry Kane for Spurs’ 7-1 hammering of Hull Cuty and was rewarded with 51 points from the Golden Boot winner.

De Bruyne, Jesus and Coutinho were joined by Alexis Sanchez, Dele Alli, Ben Davies and Willy Caballero as David delivered 118 points to end the campaign as Australia’s number one FPL manager.

In his eighth year playing the game, David’s late rise in the rankings earned him eighth spot overall – bettering a previous high of around the 51,000-mark in 2014/15.

Jatin Arutla was the only other member of our top five to end the campaign with a three-figure tally.

India’s number one ranked manager called upon captain Kane along with Sanchez, Jesus, Alli and Davies, and also had Junior Stanislas, Pedro and Romelu Lukaku to thank as he picked up 105 points in Gameweek 38.

Josh King’s social media post, alerting us of his injury prior to yesterday’s teamsheets, clearly helped Jatin – he swapped out the Norwegian for his Cherries team-mate Stanislas with just one minute remaining before the Gameweek 38 deadline.

A ninth-place position betters Jatin’s top rank of around 69,000 (achieved in 2014/15) in his previous four seasons of playing.

In fourth place, Ogie Nolan had a number of the usual suspects on board.

The likes of captain Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Alli, Coutinho and Caballero were joined by Christian Eriksen’s pair of assists away to Hull to help Ogie earn 97 points in the final round of fixtures.

He ended as the second-placed manager in Ireland on his way to 12th overall – this is the second successive season he’s finished inside the top 1,000 in a 10-year FPL career.

Mervyn Glasgow’s decision to opt for Diego Costa over Kane as his captain proved decisive as he dropped to fifth in the FFS league.

The Spurs fan also overlooked Kane with the armband for Double Gameweek 37, opting instead for Sanchez. He headed into Sunday’s finale in sixth place overall but dropped back to 14th after returning 78 points.

Mervyn also had Jesus, Alli, Sanchez, Caballero and Eden Hazard in his XI and opted to make no transfers for the final round of fixtures.

This was, nonetheless, his most impressive finish to date in 11 seasons of playing FPL – Mervyn’s previous high was 1,246 in 2011/12. He also claimed first place as Northern Ireland’s best performing FPL manager.

The Fantasy Football Scout Members League

World number six Ben Pearson rose to the top of our members’ league in the final day thanks to a score of 99 points.

Ben opted to captain Coutinho at home to Middlesbrough and was rewarded with a total of 20 points from the Liverpool playmaker, while the likes of Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Eriksen and Caballero were also among his starting line-up.

City skipper Vincent Kompany and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin proved the differential picks, combining for a further 21 points after both were in the goals yesterday afternoon.

Ben finished the season as Switzerland’s number one ranked manager to chalk up a career-high rank, having ended a very respectable 1,251 in the previous campaign.

The aforementioned David Brundish and Ogie Nolan took second and third respectively and were joined in the top five by Billy Ketsu and Kristian Rudd.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football

Congratulations go to Matthew Jones, aka Numb, who finished top of our Sky Sports league with a total of 2,971 points – sitting just 28 points off the summit, he ended second in the overall rankings.

Niall Murphy grabbed the Scout league runners-up spot with 2,958 points, which was enough to claim third overall.

Nigel Dodds’ total of 2,936 points was third in the Scout league and joint-sixth in the world, while Ian Cox – aka Cheesoid – (2,929 points, eighth overall) and Oliver Brown (2,917 points, tenth overall) complete our top five performers.

Sky Sports have pledged to pay out £1,000 to the winner of our Scout league, while our top five will also share £1,000 between them as we also won the League of Leagues for the fourth successive season.

The Fantasy Football Scout Cups

Simon Bennett, aka Sleepysi, is the new winner of the Fantasy Football Scout open-to-all competition after defeating former FPL runner-up Kelvin Travers or “K3lvin” on overall rank alone.

Both were tied on 103 points in Gameweek 38, though Sleepysi emerged victorious as he ended the campaign in 460th spot, whereas K3lvin came in around the 57,000-mark.

The duo both went into Sunday’s showdown owning a handful of shared picks, including Kane, Jesus, Sanchez and Alli. In terms of final differentials, K3lvin had Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Leroy Sane, Ben Davies and Hazard while Sleepysi had Eriksen, Coutinho and Pedro on board.

Ultimately, it came down to a question of captains and K3lvin’s decision to opt for Sanchez – and not match Sleepysi’s choice of Kane – was the deciding factor.

Sleepysi is the 14th winner of our open-to-all cup and joins a growing list that includes donnellc, Jonty, Gribude, Goonerdave, Ninja_Fit_Saints, sleeping master, Mch, Wild Rover, Tdubb05 , CMIFLFC, Mark, Leon Harris and A Manager Has No Name, who edged past Moin in our first FFS open-to-all cup of 2016/17 earlier in the year.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Choppers13 (aka Adam Hopcroft) defeated My Pretty Pony (aka Peter Kouewenberg) by 92 points to 90.

Our FFS Members’ cup also concluded on Sunday and was another hard-fought battle, with Malaikat Jahad getting the better of Kristoffer Asp or “Aspern” by 89 points to 88.

Malakait’s final transfer – swapping Alli for Eriksen – almost cost him the crown and came at the loss of two FPL points, while Aspern’s final trade, which saw Hazard replaced by Coutinho, gained him a single point in a very narrow defeat.

Malakait joins a cast of former FFS Members Cup winners that also includes Waltzingmatildas, Fuzzy Dunlop, Kippax Kickers, Acquafresca, Trigg and Ola Svanheld.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Barwood (aka Steve Barwood) defeated Dynamic (aka Connor Richardson) by 106 points to 94 to win a £50 Amazon voucher.

Both cup winners receive a £200 Amazon voucher, while the runners-up can console themselves with a £100 Amazon voucher. The victors in the third/fourth place play-offs collected £50 Amazon vouchers.

FanDuel Beat The Scout Contest

We also offered the chance to win cash in a final day FanDuel contest.

Essentially, everyone who bettered the score produced by the team of Mark and Jonty in the Beat The Scout contest was entered into a draw.

Razor500 was the manager to emerge victorious after a hectic Sunday afternoon – he receives £50 cash for his day’s work.

He scored an impressive total of 334.75 points for Sunday’s matches – Spurs pair Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min supplied 97.75 points between them, while Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Georginio Wijnaldum chipped in with a combined 84.75 points.

Congratulations to all those involved and here’s hoping to another successful season next time around – roll on August 12.

Fabinho's deal is already done. Nice to have some decent real DM. We now have squad depth DM/CM positions with Fabinho, Dinho, Yaya and then Gundogan when he is fit. Garcia is also there.

Just hope and pray Bravo will leave.

Would be madness to stop their best player who gave everything on every game to leave anywhere he wants now when they didn't qualiffied for CL. Would be really disrespectful.

It's quite disappointing as he looked quite sharp defensively. Now he just looks like a chap who has pace and not much else.

Have to agree he's tailor made for the wing back slot in a back three / wing back system.

When they stop making money out of them.

Tens of millions for players may sound like a lot but that has to be offset against all sorts of revenue for the top merchandisable players.

In the end the cost can be negligible or even make them money. It's certainly fairly naive to just take the top line and think that's the end of the matter.

Probably the best example I can give tou is Christiano Romaldo. So much was made of his big money transfer from United in the press...all the usual stuff about no player being worth that much...blah, blah, blah.

About three years after his transfer I watched a Real Madrid suit on news night being interviewed and he said (at that time) that Real Madrid would make over 200million profit on Ronaldo (All things considered)

So how much did Ronaldo really cost ?

The added value, that's why they pay 'so much'. There's a timeline to all this as well, good older players in the PL get valued lightly, young unproven players get rated higher. Sell-on value.

In effect Ronaldo has probably paid for quite a few other players with the money he's generated.

                  United were ripped off.

Oh aye. United did well at the time. Ronaldo and Messi haven't just raised the bar on the football field...they've done it off the pitch as well.

They're a goldmine that dwarfs even what Beckham managed to raise the bar up to.

That's what clubs are looking for now though. One good season from Pogba and his merchandising rights will propel him to pay off his fee, no problem...

Interesting isn't it? You pay the top price for the top player and now it seems like a steal? This is why players of medium/poor ability have benefited from this dynamic 😆

                      Yes it is interesting.

One thing I always like to throw into this debate about the money in football is what used to happen many years ago.

We all know the stories of the massive crowds crammed into poxy stadiums for over a hundred years. Does anybody ever stop to think what happened to all those vast sums of money at the gates. Players paid a minimum fixed wage, stadiums falling to bits with basic wooden stands...blah, blah blah...

Well the truth is the game of football has always been awash with money and made many people very wealthy and they walked off without a care in the world about the players or supporters....and now it's the players and not the men in suits who get the money (mainly).

Which do we prefer...players or suits?

Ah but back then you got into games for next te nothing, never was a real money-making exercise for BODS. TV gave next te nowt, transfer fees were accordingly low... wages of top players post-Jimmy Hill were okay but not like now, relatively.

The Golden Age is now, pay TV and live games has transformed it all. Good thing? Yes, better quality in England but others have suffered.

Was it 'better' back then? Depends how you see it all, I think back then had a certain "beauty" that is lost forever.

All those shillings ended up in very few pockets. The game was awash with money for the owners...and very few overheads.

Lawrence Cotton who built the first Blackburn Rovers team of note used the proceeds to build his empire.

Really interesting discussion. But I liked it when the players were a bit closer to the fans, not removed to some astral plane. For example Phil Thompson lugging the European Cup to a working man's club in an area I doubt many contemporary footballers would visit. I dunno.

But I accept that the many most definitely contributed to the few, then and now.

Good point indeed. These astronomical fees have to be considered in the context of merchandising etc. The question becomes is it really worth it when you're paying so much for 'potential'? E.g. the likes of Martial. Certainly there's no guarantee of marketing/sporting success, unlike Ronaldo who was already a fantastic goal scorer before his move.

It needs the big personality to justify it. Paul Pogba has that personality (see above)..one big season from him pays off his fee. He could join the likes of Ronaldo and Beckham in revenue stakes but he needs to up his game a bit. The image is perfect though.

Suarez, Costa and Co are less marketable...

                  Martial is nowhere near...

Why do some clubs (in England and Wales) have square corner flags and others, triangular?

Hey Netley, how's it going? You've not been around for long. Finished on 7.7k man, 5 straight red arrows...lol. Was 1.9k after GW33 but slid down a little towards the end. Some silly punts a little too early. Felt a little sad seeing a fair few fly past me at the very end. But was close to making it work. Despite the crying, 14 straight green arrows was a highlight.

Was anyone else bothered there was no Notes section this year? I was. I emailed them early in the season asking about it and they said it'd be coming soon. Never happened. ☹️

Mostly just a list of possible future transfers.
Sometime a reminder of upcoming fixtures for a team.
Even just a heads-up from this forum, just stick it in as a reminder.
Writing down notes is fine but when you've got an OCD wife that likes to through things out that don't look interesting to her it can be an issue. 🙂

Sounds simple but my memory sailed off into the sunset a few years back so it was a handy when I was considering moves on a Friday night/ saturday morning.

Sometimes you'd get boys on slabbering then they'd finish 19th in the mini league.

Yes - I was highly disappointed and emailed FPL towers. It was one of the reasons I didn't do so well this season.

I am expecting them to return in 2017/8.

Good stuff! IX is my favourite game of all time. What did you think of XV? I'm still slogging through it months later, didnt catch me at all 🙁

IX is great, I watched a playthrough of it again recently - it might even have the best music too! Overall I think I preferred VI and VII to it for me. I haven't played an awful lot of XV to be honest. I haven't been impressed by anything they've done after XII to be honest 🙁

Sephiroth is the best final fantasy character though.

It is probably time for a Final Fantasy crossover with Fantasy Football Scout.

It could be called Final Fantasy Football X and feature the mods travelling the world leveling up graduating from Rondon status all the way up to Kane

Sephiroth and Cloud upfront. Aerith definitely starting in defence.

As I've already mentioned him tonight.

Paul Pogba's starting position this season took most of us (maybe including Pogba himself) by surprise. I'm not sure whether that was caused by Mourinho's other options (apart from Herrera) being Fellaini and an ageing Carrick or not.

It could be interesting to see where he starts in pre season this time if United buy a decent, and proper, CDM to play alongside Herrera.

Pogba in the hole at 7.5 could be good.

Yeah, definitely keeping an eye if he's in the hole.

Assuming Rooney is long gone then it's a straight forward fight between Pogba, Mkhi and possibly Mata isn't it ?..Have I missed anybody ?

Well Herrera can play there, but that's not gonna happen. Griezmann can play there too 😎

Griezmann is being touted as Rooney's long term replacement and if not him one will be signed to play just behind the striker.. that won't be Pogba for sure but if Jose goes to 4-3-3 like i think he should that would give Pogba a lot more freedom and would likely bring more in the way of goals and assists.. there is just too much up in the air with United right now and potential signings

Agreed. This season's offerings just never really got started or looked the part. Definite second bests to all their rivals.

Yeah, the left side of a midfield three in a 433 is Pogba's best position imo

£7.5m would be a steal! Doubt they'd drop his price though, especially if we sign the forward options that have been touted and a CDM is brought in to allow him to play further up.

I do think he'll become more of an option though, especially if he's a couple of mil cheaper than the likes of the Spurs trio, Coutinho, Firmino, Siggy (if he goes to Everon) etc.

I don't think the players' surrounding team mates affect their prices, do they? Surely it's on individual merit? Hence, he should drop to around 7.5.

He's taken loads of stick and didn't score that many points. But if you watch him, he could have had a huge season. He's always trying to shoot or a killer ball (when he's not trying to dribble or of his own box!), and I note that this is reflected in his ICT rating. You would assume that United will score more next season, possibly with some better players, and you'd imagine that Pogba will get in amongst the points.

This was my first season, and I first entered the fpl site on the first days of August.
With fpl twitter mentioning next season's game launches week commencing 10 July, does it mean that on that week we'll be able to create our team and players will have prices?

If Man Utd win the Europa League....

Could they be looking at a potential DGW in the first few weeks of the season?

I recall Chelsea had a DGW after they won the Champions League early doors but can't quite remember when the double/blank was. If I remember correctly the double was in GW2, and blank in 3. So potential WC between 2 and 3 and stocking up on Utd and their GW2 opponents?

I agree. I still look at football as something romantic and not as a business.

It's hard, in the contemporary era of football, to see it as romantic, but I agree. You just have to undertake a significant suspension of disbelief.

I think Liverpool's heroic tilt at the title a couple of years ago was very romantic.

And if Man U won tonight, as I hope they do, it would transcend everything else about the modern game.

It's true. The main problem with modern football is lack of patience. Howe could easily move to a bigger club with more money but he is still there. I respect him for that.

Question for you guys. Assuming United win the Europa League and get Champions League qualification, who's had the better season when we look back 2-3 from now: Spurs or United?

It's irrelevant. Mourinho was talking about winning the league before the season started. Didn't he know he would have to play in Europa league? And the amount he spent. Crazy. Add to these his complaints all the time.
I think Spurs fans will look back at this season as the season when they finished above Arsenal and consider it a success whereas it would be a shame if Man utd fans call such a terrible league finish a success.

Of course he was talking about competing for the league you have to instill in the players that is at least achievable even if he didn't believe it himself.. the league campaign as it turned out was a huge let down no getting away from it.. Spurs for all their fantastic football didn't win it either.. I think Spurs fans will see it as progress once again in the CL and like you say a 2nd place finish above Arsenal but these players will be wanting much more than that in the coming seasons or they will be off somewhere else..

Well there is no doubting who has played the more entertaining football and been in better form all season.. Spurs.. but ultimately no one remembers runners up they will remember a rather hit and miss United side that won a domestic and European trophy..

This however is totally reliant on United winning later on tonight

Yeah, that's what and there in lies the problem with trophy count and trophy obsession, no? Benitez will tell you he won two trophies at Inter. Just think it's used as a cop out by managers to deflect criticism from their own team's performances.

Well all teams are playing for something are they not? trophies and success.. it's all well and good playing scintillating football and having the fans on the edge of their seats all season but at the end of the day they want to see their clubs lifting silverware and the players want silverware above all else for themselves.. Spurs have been absolutely sensational these past few seasons and i'm a big admirer of them and in particular their manager but as things stand they have nothing to show for it right now

It appears these days you cannot have success without winning trophies. Spurs were so utterly rampant in the latter half and that in itself should represent a successful season, but we won't look at it that way in 2-3 years time. There's some journo named Dan Levene who's likened Pochettino to Martinez because Poch hasn't won a trophy. That's such a ridiculous comparison in my view and just makes me sad how people just let a trophy count (or lack of it) mask what actually happened in a season. I mean judge real success by the quality of the trophy, as in the League or Champs League, but when people include the FIFA Club World cup, the community shield, the EFL cup or even the FA cup in that count, it just isn't right.

When you are up towards the top of the league as United and Spurs are with the quality and resources available then success yes can only be measured in trophies ultimately.. those teams without such resources the Evertons and Southamptons for example real success would be European football and the teams at the bottom just want to survive and stay in the league.. i would have to agree with your opinion on the Poch and Martinez comparison.. Poch is proving to be a much better coach and i'm sure he will have the trophies to show for it at some stage too.. as for the qualities of trophies i wouldn't count the Charity Shield myself but you have to win the CL to be in the club world cup i believe and Spurs would take your hand clean off if you offered them a league cup Fa cup or any trophy for that matter

                            Said Didier Drogba:
Following the news that Chelsea would face Arsenal in the FA Cup final he joked that he would leave Phoenix Rising on a short-term loan in order to continue his fine form against Arsene Wenger's side.
