FFS – League & Cups Round-up

Sunday’s goalfest brought the curtain down on the 2016/17 season, giving us time to assess the main performers in our Fantasy Football Scout leagues and cups over the last 10 months of domestic action.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Jon Pears claimed top spot in the Fantasy Football Scout league in Fantasy Premier League after serving up 94 points in Gameweek 38.

Captain Harry Kane contributed 34 points and was joined by Manchester City trio Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne, who delivered a combined 26 points in the 5-0 rout over Watford.

In his eleventh season as an FPL manager, John also has Philippe Coutinho, Gary Cahill and Petr Cech to thank for a further 20 points as he climbed into fifth spot in the overall standings. That’s a career-high rank, with his previous best placing 1,029 back in 2012/13.

David Brundish grabbed the runners-up spot after returning an outrageous 304 points in the final two Gameweeks of the season.

After picking up 186 points in Double Gameweek 37, David unleashed his Triple Captain chip on Harry Kane for Spurs’ 7-1 hammering of Hull Cuty and was rewarded with 51 points from the Golden Boot winner.

De Bruyne, Jesus and Coutinho were joined by Alexis Sanchez, Dele Alli, Ben Davies and Willy Caballero as David delivered 118 points to end the campaign as Australia’s number one FPL manager.

In his eighth year playing the game, David’s late rise in the rankings earned him eighth spot overall – bettering a previous high of around the 51,000-mark in 2014/15.

Jatin Arutla was the only other member of our top five to end the campaign with a three-figure tally.

India’s number one ranked manager called upon captain Kane along with Sanchez, Jesus, Alli and Davies, and also had Junior Stanislas, Pedro and Romelu Lukaku to thank as he picked up 105 points in Gameweek 38.

Josh King’s social media post, alerting us of his injury prior to yesterday’s teamsheets, clearly helped Jatin – he swapped out the Norwegian for his Cherries team-mate Stanislas with just one minute remaining before the Gameweek 38 deadline.

A ninth-place position betters Jatin’s top rank of around 69,000 (achieved in 2014/15) in his previous four seasons of playing.

In fourth place, Ogie Nolan had a number of the usual suspects on board.

The likes of captain Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Alli, Coutinho and Caballero were joined by Christian Eriksen’s pair of assists away to Hull to help Ogie earn 97 points in the final round of fixtures.

He ended as the second-placed manager in Ireland on his way to 12th overall – this is the second successive season he’s finished inside the top 1,000 in a 10-year FPL career.

Mervyn Glasgow’s decision to opt for Diego Costa over Kane as his captain proved decisive as he dropped to fifth in the FFS league.

The Spurs fan also overlooked Kane with the armband for Double Gameweek 37, opting instead for Sanchez. He headed into Sunday’s finale in sixth place overall but dropped back to 14th after returning 78 points.

Mervyn also had Jesus, Alli, Sanchez, Caballero and Eden Hazard in his XI and opted to make no transfers for the final round of fixtures.

This was, nonetheless, his most impressive finish to date in 11 seasons of playing FPL – Mervyn’s previous high was 1,246 in 2011/12. He also claimed first place as Northern Ireland’s best performing FPL manager.

The Fantasy Football Scout Members League

World number six Ben Pearson rose to the top of our members’ league in the final day thanks to a score of 99 points.

Ben opted to captain Coutinho at home to Middlesbrough and was rewarded with a total of 20 points from the Liverpool playmaker, while the likes of Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Eriksen and Caballero were also among his starting line-up.

City skipper Vincent Kompany and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin proved the differential picks, combining for a further 21 points after both were in the goals yesterday afternoon.

Ben finished the season as Switzerland’s number one ranked manager to chalk up a career-high rank, having ended a very respectable 1,251 in the previous campaign.

The aforementioned David Brundish and Ogie Nolan took second and third respectively and were joined in the top five by Billy Ketsu and Kristian Rudd.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football

Congratulations go to Matthew Jones, aka Numb, who finished top of our Sky Sports league with a total of 2,971 points – sitting just 28 points off the summit, he ended second in the overall rankings.

Niall Murphy grabbed the Scout league runners-up spot with 2,958 points, which was enough to claim third overall.

Nigel Dodds’ total of 2,936 points was third in the Scout league and joint-sixth in the world, while Ian Cox – aka Cheesoid – (2,929 points, eighth overall) and Oliver Brown (2,917 points, tenth overall) complete our top five performers.

Sky Sports have pledged to pay out £1,000 to the winner of our Scout league, while our top five will also share £1,000 between them as we also won the League of Leagues for the fourth successive season.

The Fantasy Football Scout Cups

Simon Bennett, aka Sleepysi, is the new winner of the Fantasy Football Scout open-to-all competition after defeating former FPL runner-up Kelvin Travers or “K3lvin” on overall rank alone.

Both were tied on 103 points in Gameweek 38, though Sleepysi emerged victorious as he ended the campaign in 460th spot, whereas K3lvin came in around the 57,000-mark.

The duo both went into Sunday’s showdown owning a handful of shared picks, including Kane, Jesus, Sanchez and Alli. In terms of final differentials, K3lvin had Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Leroy Sane, Ben Davies and Hazard while Sleepysi had Eriksen, Coutinho and Pedro on board.

Ultimately, it came down to a question of captains and K3lvin’s decision to opt for Sanchez – and not match Sleepysi’s choice of Kane – was the deciding factor.

Sleepysi is the 14th winner of our open-to-all cup and joins a growing list that includes donnellc, Jonty, Gribude, Goonerdave, Ninja_Fit_Saints, sleeping master, Mch, Wild Rover, Tdubb05 , CMIFLFC, Mark, Leon Harris and A Manager Has No Name, who edged past Moin in our first FFS open-to-all cup of 2016/17 earlier in the year.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Choppers13 (aka Adam Hopcroft) defeated My Pretty Pony (aka Peter Kouewenberg) by 92 points to 90.

Our FFS Members’ cup also concluded on Sunday and was another hard-fought battle, with Malaikat Jahad getting the better of Kristoffer Asp or “Aspern” by 89 points to 88.

Malakait’s final transfer – swapping Alli for Eriksen – almost cost him the crown and came at the loss of two FPL points, while Aspern’s final trade, which saw Hazard replaced by Coutinho, gained him a single point in a very narrow defeat.

Malakait joins a cast of former FFS Members Cup winners that also includes Waltzingmatildas, Fuzzy Dunlop, Kippax Kickers, Acquafresca, Trigg and Ola Svanheld.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Barwood (aka Steve Barwood) defeated Dynamic (aka Connor Richardson) by 106 points to 94 to win a £50 Amazon voucher.

Both cup winners receive a £200 Amazon voucher, while the runners-up can console themselves with a £100 Amazon voucher. The victors in the third/fourth place play-offs collected £50 Amazon vouchers.

FanDuel Beat The Scout Contest

We also offered the chance to win cash in a final day FanDuel contest.

Essentially, everyone who bettered the score produced by the team of Mark and Jonty in the Beat The Scout contest was entered into a draw.

Razor500 was the manager to emerge victorious after a hectic Sunday afternoon – he receives £50 cash for his day’s work.

He scored an impressive total of 334.75 points for Sunday’s matches – Spurs pair Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min supplied 97.75 points between them, while Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Georginio Wijnaldum chipped in with a combined 84.75 points.

Congratulations to all those involved and here’s hoping to another successful season next time around – roll on August 12.

Tapping into your football is romantic idea, Moyes seems to be almost a tragic figure, moving from one club to the next with an exhausted demeanour. I hope he can have a good rest and refresh himself well away from the limelight.

That seems to enhance the tragedy, if it's possible to do that. Someone maybe impervious to change as time moves on, baffled by current trends.

A manager successful at one style that in the first place didn't win anything though it earned him a certain respect. You feel he has to shrug off that respect and start afresh.

My captaincy woes. I must improve next season. Not sure how though.

Only captaining AGUERO, Sanchez, Lukaku, Ibra gave me returns, and also a lot of blanks including Kun -1, Zlatan one pointer.

I had zero success with the following players.

    Kane (2 times - 8 points - average 4 points)
    Negredo (1 times - 8 points - average 8 points)
    Mané (1 times - 4 points - average 4 points)
    Hazard (1 times - 2 points - average 2 points)
    Gabbiadini (1 times - 2 points - average 2 points)
    Firmino (1 times - 6 points - average 6 points)
    Deeney (1 times - 4 points - average 4 points)

Treating Captaincy picks and DGW's I had:
480 players that played 42 keepers, 128 defenders, 184 mids and 126 forwards.
I had 95 players on the bench and only managed to use 13 and managed a measly 24 points from them.
I averaged 4.21 for keepers, 3.63 for defenders, 5.74 for mids and 6.25 for forwards.
My average budget was 4.5% for keepers 15.5% for defenders 32% for mids and 27% for forwards with 20% wasted on the bench.
What I have learned is I will spend the minimum possible on the bench (16.5%) outside of BB. I will also ensure I have a good keeper no matter what as they are more valuable than we give them credit for.

Problem is every season is different. You can't have rules that encompass every season. What might have worked this season might kill you in the next one, it's all about adapting.

        ^ This is 100% true.

Although I do believe if you realise the mistakes you often make over a season, you cant adjust slightly for the next.

For instance in the Suarez/ Yaya/ Ramsey season (13/14?) I rejected Ramsey and Yaya purely on price/ stats. I got absolutely murdered.

This allowed me to easily get Alli/ Mahrez last season because price does not equal quality of player.

Unfortunately this mental block came back this season with King 😀

          We have all made mistakes.
My rank of 5k would have been a lot higher if:
1 I kept king when his fixture turned bad.
2 I took 144 pts in hits, covering my rival. I should have played my own game.
          3 I wasted bench money.
4 I chased the money a little too much.

Chasing Team Value is a classic mistake - there is little correlation between TV and rank.

This season information was crucial when it came to injuries. i.e Zlatan's Europa injury came after a lot of people, including myself, had used their FT or transferred him in.

            Patience works.

I got 24 points in total from my bench out of 292 available. Not a good return on over 20% of my budget. Rotation is another story but I believe it was less affective this year.

3 Suggestions for FPL Next Season - My Two Pence

    1) Double Clean Sheet Chip

This could replace AOA which people slate and then say they find useful.

Simply put, when this chip is played, your starting GK and defenders get 8 points for a clean sheet and not 4, while midfielders get 2 points for a clean sheet and not 1.

I think there would be more skill and less luck involved with this chip. You would have to analyse the fixtures for when defensive returns are likely and decide on a good formation to maximise points: 5-3-2? 5-4-1?

    2) 2 Points For Key Contributions (KC)

Key contributions are something that Opta record and, as they play a vital and significant part in a goal, they should be rewarded. The classic example is Brunt's cross for Evan's header that came off McAuley:

    Brunt = 2 points KC
    Evans = 3 points Assist
    McAuley = 6 points Goal

As Jonty said, "people love points" and I think this is a fair way of rewarding someone who hugely contributed to a goal.

    3) 2 points for a partial clean sheet

This works very well in other games.

I would keep it simple. Right now, you get 4 points for keeping a clean sheet for 60 minutes. If you keep a clean sheet for 30 minutes, award a partial clean sheet bonus of 2 points.

We all know how annoyed people get when defenders are subbed on 59 minutes or less. Do we really want to keep a part of the game that makes people so irate and angry going forward?

I agree with changing how clean sheets are rewarded, ive suggested it before. One thing that would need to be considered by fpl is that defenders would then score a bit more overall. I would rather see 1 point for a 45 min clean sheet.

Yes, I like this 45 minute-1-point idea! I also like the KC idea too. I'd like to see defensive/holding midfielders like Kante. Matic, Drinkwater, Dembele etc get more points.
This could be done in several different ways - such as have them "starred midfielder" so they get 2 points for a clean sheet. At the moment they are only differentiated by price and the net effect is that very few have them in their squad.

Yes, I want to keep part of the game that makes people so irate 🙂

There has to be a cut off somewhere, and if you're not on for 60 mins then imo you haven't contributed enough to the cleansheet.

You seem to be the main person advocating these changes on here. Haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else.

One of the big draws with FPL is it is a simplistic game. Having points for things like key contributions goes against that.

When certain 'casuals' pick their team they do so thinking "I'll have Aguero because he scores lots", not "I think I'll get Brunt, he's likely to get some key contributions".

      1. Rhinos

Exactly. The reason fpl has such widespread appeal is A the popularity of the premier league and B the ability to compete against mates and colleagues. If it ever reaches the point where you can only do well by picking players that meet certain minutiae rather than simply good footballers it will kill the game

Awarding points for won duels would be the way (tackle won, aerial won, dribbling past opp, foul won). Bundesliga fantasy style - although any players who are duel machines tend to do well no matter what. Besides, these things are already added to the total BPS.

Undecided if it would improve FPL tbh. Add some diversity maybe.

The BPS could perhaps be tweaked so that Kante gets more bonus points - but don't let him have too many or he'll become a template player in everyone's team.

        1) Nah

        2) Is that an objective (opta) thing not already accounted for in bps (like key pass)? Otherwise will only create its own problems - what about about the kc assister of assister of assister of a goal...

        3) Don't agree. Primary job of a defender is to defend against goals for the game. 60 minutes is debateable, let alone 30. Would also effect pricing. May be fairer to award CS to every defender who plays for CS team on final whistle, however many minutes played, but that would create it's own issues.

        1) Sure, sounds interesting.
        2) Not for me, it's I'll defined. I think we should be aiming to eradicate 'grey areas' - not add to them.
        3) Yeah I'm in favour of something like this. It wouldn't actually increase defenders points scored by much at all...

For GKs and Defenders (ignoring appearance points):

Play less than 45 mins but maintain a clean sheet = 0 pts
Play more than 45 mins but less than 75 mins, but maintain a clean sheet in that period = 2pts
Play more than 75 mins and maintain a clean sheet in that period = 4pts

"Do we really want to keep a part of the game that makes people so irate and angry going forward?"

Changes should be made because they add value to the game, not because people express outrage because they don't know the rules

I think defenders should be rewarded for keeping a clean sheet, but you shouldn't get full credit if you come on after 29 mins and don't concede and then come off after 89 mins.

As I said, I think this would be fair:

Play less than 45 mins but maintain a clean sheet = 0 pts
Play more than 45 mins but less than 75 mins (perhaps 70 mins), but maintain a clean sheet in that period = 2pts
Play more than 75 mins (perhaps 70 mins) and maintain a clean sheet in that period = 4pts

Partial award for any defender completing one half but less than 60 minutes where their team goes on to complete a CS. So, for example, a DF for DF at HT in a FT 0-0 would give both 2pts.

Key contributions seems like a good idea, but could cause a lot of debate over decisions made by Opta

Get rid of the chips completely. 95% of us ended up playing our best chip on gw37. It's not really adding much to the game.

        Surprisingly refreshing ideas.

I'm not sure I want partial clean sheets when there are teams who are more likely to keep cs than others.

        Quite like the AOA idea.

KCs...hmm...not sure I want any more ways of adding points in the game. I feel the bps are enough.

A good post though young virgin. 😉

I'd like to see the game refreshed though. More ways to score points, changing the bonus points to reward defensive mids. Points for earning a penalty. Reward half points for players on your bench. Half point autosubs. Points for recovered balls. Bonus points for man of the match.
Football is also changing. Notice how few viable forwards there were this season. Too many are being classed as mids. Possibly should have an attacking mid slot. Now we see 3 at the back becoming quite common with wing backs.

        1) I really like this idea, it puts more emphasis on defense for a week and encourages a balanced squad so that you have 5 playing defenders or at least have to plan to have 5 playing defenders for one week of the season.
        2) Too complicated for the casual player, they don't even know what a KC is.
        3) I agree that this would work but it is a rule which would only be relevant occasionally.

Wow, what a response! Thank you everyone 🙂

One thing I forgot to add ...

        4) Reward players who score consecutive goals in a match.

So a striker would get 5 points for his second goal in a game and 6 points for his third goal ... And so on.

I think it is a better way to reward outstanding performances in a game.

The best changes would be nes that were just little tweaks. I wouldn't like to see anything other than CS, goals + assists personally - think it just overcomplicates a beautifully simplisitc game.

My main changes would be get rid of AoA- it's rubbish. Like the CS chip idea actually, it would definitely be an improvement.

I'm a strong advocate of making it so everyone gets 2 goes at the chips, similar to the WC. So all chips refresh in Jan. It would be great to be able to use all the chips in single GW at the start of the season rather than waiting until the end of the season.

Agree. The simplicity of the game is good.

Disagree with the point FPLV makes on +1s for winning team players. Makes underdog players less attractive and pushes more towards the top teams

I like the clean sheet chip idea.

Mentioned before but a new category [def mids] who are awarded 2 pts for a clean sheet and managers must have a minimum of one in each squad. This was in response to bringing more players into the game.

But ordinarily, you just wouldn't pick a defensive mid. So using up a spot in the team to accommodate a defensive mid over someone who is likely to score more points isn't exactly thrilling

I guess so ..but by definition the players we are not picking are the more boring ones. Maybe if three points were awarded for a clean sheet for def mids it might get the juices flowing a bit more !

Introducing additional categories is a terrible idea.
If you want top defensive midfielders like Kante to be more viable then just tweak the BPS.
Other defensive mids are already options as cheap enablers.

I really like the Clean Sheet Chip idea. The big issue with the AOA chip is that it will rarely get you a huge amount of points, most people's 'bench' player is a cheapo for a good reason - they will rarely score big. You would have to be really lucky to gain more than a few points from using this chip.

It would be interesting to know what the highest, lowest and average point improvements from using each of these chips this season has been.

AOA is the only chip I like. It's simple, rarely worth it, and adds a strategic element to using it. The issue with AOA is that it's too insignificant when you can only use it once. Give us 2 AOA chips for the first half of the season and refresh it for the second half. Make it impossible to use it twice in a row so you can't build a team for using AOA two GWs in a row. I also think it should be playable after using a WC.

TC is incredibly boring. The only strategic element to TC is that BB is better used during a DGW, so you have to decide whether you want to waste your TC on the first possible opportunity, or save it for a DGW that might be crap. The only dynamic I like about TC is that it allows you to hit in a player for a single GW in order to maximize points from the chip.

BB is too strong and straight forward to utilize because of the WC and DGWs. Having two chips that are best used before DGWs kills strategic diversities. It's nice that BB promotes a different way of building the squad, but with DGWs guaranteed to happen every year it's pointless to have it in the game. If it could only be used for the first half of the season it would be fine, but I imagine loads of people would just use it in GW1. Making it time limited to December and January would be cool.

        Assists:

        1) Currently if Kane gets fouled for a pen and scores it, he gets just the goal. Could someone get both an assist and a goal?
        2) Yoshida gets fouled and wins a penalty which is then missed - could Yoshi get an assist?

Even if nothing for the above two, perhaps extra BAPs of some kind?

One other - chips in each half of the season - would like a TC and BB in the first half - everyone would use it differently.

How about the TC and BB chips both have to be used in the first half of the season - no TC or BB chips for the second half?

Or a ban on using TC or BB chips in DGWs?

Using them in DGWs, which mostly occur in the second half of the season, results in all serious players using them in the same DGWs.

Detaching them from DGWs would make for more variety.

I'd love to go all out there and propose something radical (stay with me here). Other than GKs, why not only have two ways of differentiating point scoring: for defenders and for attackers - so no special dispensation for midfielders with CS points and so on.

BUT players can now have up to two categories. Kante would be "defender, midfielder" and can be deployed in either slot, but be scored as a defender. Sanchez would be "attacker, midfielder" and could be deployed in either category and would score as an attacker. This would instantly solve the wingback dilemma. You could field Alonso in either a midfield or a defender slot, but he'd be scored as a defender. So, if you wanted you could field an entire midfield full of defensive players who could rack up CS points, or an entire midfield of attacking players.

I suspect initially it wouldn't change much, but would create some interesting tactical choices around the 4th/5th mid slots. Want to chance a 6m with sporadic attacking points, or a Kante-like stopper who racks up CS points? You could play a cheap attacking mid as your 3rd attacker to free up a mid slot for a defensive mid.

I'm sure it's unworkable - but doesn't seem too overly complex for the casuals to grasp. If anything it makes the scoring more simple, it just creates some interesting tactical decisions.

Fantastic HT Virg and testament to your excellent playing style and intellectual understanding of the game.

Love points 1&3 as I think these would actually improve the game and make it fairer. Point 2 is adding more grey areas which I dont like. So many dodgy assist awards can you imagine all the KC calls everyone will be trying to claim one after every goal.

My suggestion would be to add a 'century chip'. You pick one player to stick it on and if that player scores a hatrick you automatically get 100 points for that player. Would give people hope who are losing ml by long way at the end of season. A way to keep them engaged longer. Its the hope that kills ya.

One I've always wanted and really think they should do. An extra point that stays for that CS on 60 mins would narrow the gap between keepers/defenders and the mids and fwds. It doesn't sound much but it balances the game up nicely (I did all the sums one year).

And one personal like.. Make the game two free transfers.

I like some of these ideas but there are issues which have been mentioned previously.

The Double defence chip I like actually, as it's sort of contrary to other offensive chips and will require skill and planning, great for us, but maybe no so much for the "casual".

My chip idea was a "superb". basically it removes your lowest point scorer in your team for an applicable highest point scorer off your bench.. but less tactical and more braindead..

in terms of Key Contributions, although I don't mind the concept it does open things up to interpretation. I'm not sure Opta do have this as a stat as such, and it really can and will cause more arguments when someone thinks a back heel in the box to a player should count as it was exceptional whilst others think a defence saving tackle that is the assist of the assist should count...

Partial cleanses I'm not keen on personally. What COULD be done though is similar to what they do in sky. Get the CS points for minutes played, keep it at 60, but even those subbed only get the points if the team go on to keep a clean for the entire game... removes that random 6 point haul for someone who was deemed expendable to be subbed

Best change would be something to encourage more transfers as current setup is too stagnant imo. Specifically I'd reduce 4pt hit to a 2pt hit or alternatively give two free transfers each gameweek. I honestly feel this would allow managers more freedom to manage instead of being heavily penalised for altering your team.
