End of Season Awards – Defenders

Having rolled out our take on the main Goalkeepers from a Fantasy Football perspective over 2016/17, our end of season awards continue with the chief protagonists in defence.

Once again, we’ve released a poll in the right column of the homepage to collect your votes – please remember that each person can cast four votes this time around.

2015/16 Fantasy Football Scout Team of the Season Review

Goalkeeper – Jack Butland

Defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Hector Bellerin, Christian Fuchs

Midfielders – Riyad Mahrez, Dele Alli, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil

Forwards – Jamie Vardy,Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane

While Stoke City’s Jack Butland can be excused after spending the vast majority of time on the sidelines through injury, the same cannot be said for Hector Bellerin, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Fuchs, who all failed to live up to their previous season’s performances.

Bizarrely, both Bellerin and Alderweireld – the two top scoring defenders in 2015/16 – had to wait until the final day of the season to net their first goal this time around.

Bellerin’s attacking output (one goal, five assists) was near identical to the campaign beforehand (one goal, six assists) but his clean sheet count plummeted from 18 to 10, with his security of starts now also in question as a result of Arsene Wenger’s shift to 3-4-2-1. Should the Frenchman remain in charge at the Emirates, Bellerin could battle it out with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a wing-back berth next time out.

An ever-present on his way to returning four goals and two assists in 2015/16, Alderweireld missed eight league outings due to injury this season. Like Bellerin, he failed to justify a lofty 6.5 starting price, with the likes of Kyle Walker proving a far more popular pick due to Spurs’ wing-back system. Should Mauricio Pochettino continue with the same 3-4-2-1 formation, the Belgian – despite an expected price drop – could struggle to garner attention once again.

Fuchs matched his four assists from 2015/16 and bettered his goal count by two to zero, though Leicester City’s lack of resilience proved costly. The Austrian’s clean sheets dropped from 15 to eight, while his bonus point tally more than halved, down from 25 to 10. Having started at 5.5 this term, we can surely expect a drop to 5.0 in light of his 105 points for the season.

While those three all miss out on nominations for this season’s elite XI, here are the candidates in the running….

Marcos Alonso

Arriving from Fiorentina on the penultimate day of last summer’s transfer window, little was expected of a defender who had previously served up a career-high Fantasy Premier League haul of 52 points for Sunderland back in 2013/14.

Although he failed to start the first two league matches he was available for, Alonso’s debut off the bench in a 3-0 loss to Arsenal in Gameweek 6 coincided with Antonio Conte’s decision to switch to a 3-4-3 formation.

From that point onwards, the Spaniard missed just one of the Blues’ final 32 league matches – due to illness against Manchester United in Gameweek 33. Unleashed as a raiding left wing-back, he racked up the points at both ends of the pitch, delivering six goals, five assists and 15 clean sheets on his way to 177 points.

It’s indicative of Alonso’s points potential that a price rise of 0.9 over the season was more than any defender and bettered by just one player in the game – Romelu Lukaku’s 1.1.

Runner-up to team-mate Gary Cahill for FPL defenders, Alonso claimed third spot in both the Sky Sports and the Telegraph games among backline options.

Should he remain as a defender in FPL – and avoid re-classification as a midfielder, as has been the case in games such as FanDuel – there’s no question that Alonso will move to 6.5 at least.

Yet when you consider that his average of 5.7 points per match (ppm) was more than any defensive regular and bettered by just five regular midfielders and four forwards, that could still represent excellent value if Conte opts against rotating to cope with Champions League duties next term.

If he can kick on from where he left off, it’ll be difficult to look past Alonso as our premium defender of choice when next season gets underway.

Gary Cahill

The top scoring defender in FPL, Cahill edged Alonso at the summit by just a single point as a result of John Terry’s early withdrawal against Sunderland last weekend.

Initially named as a sub in Gameweek 38, the former Bolton man emerged from the bench to replace the outgoing skipper midway through the first-half with the score 1-1 and went on to claim a clean sheet as Chelsea did not concede in his 63 minutes on the pitch.

Cahill failed to start just two league matches in Conte’s first year at the Bridge and mirrored Alonso’s six goals, bettering him for bonus (15 to 11) and clean sheets – his total of 17 was more than any goalkeeper or defender.

As with Alonso, we expect a rise to 6.5, though there’s a possibility that, as part of a back-three, he could be more immune to any possible chopping and changing.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Along with Bournemouth’s Steve Cook and Middlesbrough centre-half Ben Gibson, the Spaniard was one of only three outfield players to feature from start to finish in all 38 Gameweeks.

That security of starts meant that, despite scoring just once, Azpilicueta finished just eight points behind Cahill’s tally of 178 in FPL and topped both the Sky Sports and Telegraph games ahead of his aforementioned team-mate.

Although he was mainly utilised as a central defender, Azpilicueta still equalled last season’s tally of five assists and went on to double his clean sheet haul, up from eight to 16.

An ability to hoover up the bonus kept him near the top of the leaderboard – a total of 22 additional points was a career-high and more than any other defender.

Again, a price rise to 6.5 looks imminent, yet – as evidenced by this season’s teamsheets – his security of starts should keep him in contention.

Kyle Walker

With Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose kicking off the season at 6.5 and 6.0 respectively, Walker’s relatively kind starting price of 5.5 turned many heads as the value route into the Spurs defence.

Indeed, by Gameweek 8 he’d already climbed to 6.0 thanks to a series of displays that ultimately persuaded 1.6m FPL managers to snap up his services – more than any defender.

Another to benefit from his manager’s penchant for wing-backs, Walker doubled his assist tally from three to six this time out, which was top among defenders.

Yet with talk surrounding a possible switch to Manchester City, there’s no doubt that his form tailed off as the campaign unfolded – Walker failed to produce any attacking returns from Gameweek 23 onwards and started just one of the final five league fixtures.

A price hike to 6.5 seems inevitable, yet if that mooted move to the Etihad does indeed transpire, Walker is likely to be utilised mainly as a right-back by Pep Guardiola, possibly diminishing his appeal.

In turn, his departure will have many considering Kieran Trippier, who could find himself in pole position to claim a regular role under Pochettino. Despite starting a mere six times (with six more outings as a sub), the former Burnley man still provided five assists in 2016/17 and could well emerge as next season’s Walker, with a cost under 6.0 on the cards.

Seamus Coleman

Starting at a cost of 5.5, Everton’s right-back was a peripheral figure in our pre-season plans after ending the 2015/16 campaign with just 94 FPL points to his name.

But Ronald Koeman’s arrival at Goodison transformed Coleman’s fortunes as a potent source of Fantasy points.

Despite missing 12 of his side’s fixtures, the Irishman still finished seventh top scoring defender in FPL, courtesy of four goals, four assists, 10 clean sheets and 15 bonus points before his campaign came to an unfortunate end while on international duties against Wales back in late March.

Prior to sustaining that season-ending broken leg, Coleman had served up attacking or defensive returns in 11 of his final 14 league appearances, with an average of 5.1 ppm bettered only by Alonso’s 5.7 among regular defenders.

Certainly, he looks likely to miss the first few months of the upcoming campaign, which could potentially bring Mason Holgate into contention as a more budget-friendly route into a defence that chalked up 13 shutouts in their first season with Koeman at the helm.

Gareth McAuley

Having scored just nine times in his previous five seasons, there’s an argument that McAuley’s six-goal haul in 2016/17 – from just 16 attempts – was something of an anomaly.

Priced at just 4.5, the Irishman’s exploits in the final third helped claim ninth spot in the defender rankings, though he placed third for value (26.2) in terms of points per million. When it came to transfers in, he was second only to Walker, with 1.56m FPL managers clambering on board a bandwagon that saw his price peak at 5.3 in Gameweek 31.

Worryingly for the Baggies, though, they showed little of the resilience that typifies a Tony Pulis team – a total of six clean sheets was superior only to relegated Hull’s five.

McAuley’s attacking output will likely earn him an inevitable rise to 5.0, yet bearing in mind that he turns 38 next December, it remains to be seen whether he’ll be a regular in 2017/18, with the versatile Craig Dawson earmarked as his eventual successor at centre-half.

Looking forward, Dawson – having netted four times in back-to-back seasons – and Chris Brunt, if he remains listed as a defender in FPL, could ultimately prove stronger options at a similar price. Yet Ben Foster’s save-point potential means he could be the value pick if he continues at 4.5.

Antonio Valencia

A total of 120 points fails to tell the full story of a season where Valencia’s Fantasy potential was ultimately scuppered as a result of United’s European ambitions.

An average of 4.3 ppm matched Spurs’ Walker, for example, with one goal, three assists and 12 clean sheets from just 28 appearances.

In the second half of the season, in particular, Valencia’s raids down the right persuaded many to snap him up – from Gameweek 20 onwards, he delivered a goal, assist or clean sheet in 10 of his final 12 league outings.

Yet with United clinching a Champions League spot via last night’s success in the Europa League, the Ecuadorian played just three of their final 10 top-flight matches.

Having matched Spurs at the summit for clean sheets with 17 apiece, there’s a possibility that United’s main defenders could even rise to the 6.0 mark.

Early on at least, Valencia’s penchant for points at both ends could still prove value as the best route into the United rearguard. And should Mourinho need to prioritise domestically in the latter stages, the right-back seems far less likely to resort to bench-warming duties.

Charlie Daniels

After returning three goals and five assists in 2015/16, the Bournemouth left-back once again proved a reliable source of points at both ends of the pitch.

Daniels’ initial 5.0 price tag deterred many from initially investing, yet a total of four goals, three assists, 14 bonus points and 10 clean sheets helped him claim sixth spot in the FPL defender standings with 134 points.

Bearing in mind that he produced 130 points in the season beforehand, Daniels is favourite to remain at 5.0. A secure starter, his potential for bumper points hauls – five sets of double-figure returns was more than any of our featured defenders – suggests that he could continue to offer value for money.

If Adam Smith comes in at 4.5 again, though, he could be another Cherries option to monitor – the right-back returned five assists and bettered Daniels by 26 shots to 19, despite scoring only once.

    RP
I have a doubt regarding the initial pricing policy in FPL.

Ex: This year Chelsea defence has performed quite well. We all know that Kante is one of the main reasons behind it. So all the Chelsea players will be priced at 6-6.5. Now let's say before the game starts, Kante goes to some other club or Chelsea change their manager to someone like Roberto Martinez. It will surely affect the defence.
So do the people involved in pricing the FPL think of all these factors while pricing? What other factors do you think should be taken into consideration while pricing the players initially?

In a way I get your point, but pricing takes place at a given time and players are priced based on data available at the time.

if messi is signed by southampton on transfer deadline, all SOTON players should rise by 2M?

I'm not saying that. I am just wondering what are the things they consider while pricing. And I obviously know that players prices won't change after the game is launched. So stop giving nonsensical examples like that.

It's a good point. What if a previously leaky defence sign three gun defenders in the summer (two centre backs and a left back). Would the remaining right back's price then be higher when they set the prices, based off the potential to now keep a lot more cleans

Exactly my point. This year in the beginning the prices of Walker and vertonghen were 5.5. Rose was 6.0. Alderweireld was 6.5 and injured in the beginning. Bavies was 5.0. So we got an easy route into the Spurs defense.

      I don't think it's fair to speculate.
Pending and very likely transfers would be an obvious one but changing Heaton to 6.5 because it's all but done he'll move to United for example just can't be done.
      You can't anticipate
You can only work with the facts.

Having said that they must use a lot of determination when it comes to likelihood of starts. So nathan Ake isn't going to be 6 million because IF he started he'd be worth it.

It would be interesting to know the process. I'd imagine a lot of debating, campaigning and then decision by committe.

Never rated him, fantasy or real life
Crossing is not great, usually its quantity more than quality.

Happy trippear got in the team, much better crosser and not better positioning defensively (hes not amazing by any means), Walker is very reliant on pace to make up for poor reading of the game

His end product is poor. Many times as an owner I've had my head in my hands when he makes it into a scoring position and drills it low straight at the keeper.

That said, he was value at 5.5.

6 assists and playing in the best defence in the league?

Anyone thinks the new seeding system in the CL is a lot worse than the old one?

Teams like Benfica, Spartak Moscow & Shakhtar Donetsk are in pot 1, meaning there is a much higher chance for teams in pot 2 to get an easier group. Bit unfair for Real Madrid, Bayern, Juve and Monaco which won the league title.

United created a huge number of chances, failure to convert saw them not score goals. For example, had Zlatan not been injured he would have cleared 20 league goals. If that reliance falls on Griezemann instead (should he sign) then he will have opportunities to score.

Because he will be the one scoring goals for them? United had created lots of chances but their players just couldn't finish them for some reasons. Not to mention Griezmann will likely be on all of the set pieces. I also highly doubt Ibra will be there next season.

If nailed at Spurs 6.5 would be reasonable. 6.5 at City would be over priced. Also if he stays at Spurs he is far from nailed.

He was underpriced at 5.5 last season....6.5 would make him a player to swerve next campaign.

Has to be Alonso and also Holebas - got a goal and 4 assists from him plus plenty of clean sheets... average 6 points for 8 games I played him. Easy to predict when he would score points and a big reason for my good season given his differential status

In terms of the how they play the game itself: David Luiz, Danny Rose and VVD

in FPL terms: Koscielny (early season), Alonso, Pieters (popped up whenever I need him)

Alonso for his dream scenario of being a winger with the cleanies of a great defence

Walker for assists and relative value in the league's best defence

Coleman, McAuley and Walker were my early to mid season defenders. McAuley's goal at Anfield was a real highlight.

Later on, Yoshida helped me win my ML by 10 points.

On the flipside I sold Alonso the week before he scored a brace 🙁

      Alonso - no explanation needed

Coleman - brief for 5-6 games but he returned in most of those games.

Baines - got him before his assist and goal during Christmas and kept until late WC. Disappointed Everton didn't get more penalties in that period but he was nonetheless ticking along nicely with the CS.

Cahill: under rated, almost under the radar but often seemed to score.... especially if he'd made a mistake at the back.
Alonso: A dream fantasy asset in every way; bit unlucky too, could have easily scored more goals,
Coleman: In the tweaked system he really came alive ...hope he returns soon.

None, I'm shocking at picking them

      IF I had to choose
Mcauley (even if I missed some of his points) - most consistent for me in general
Coleman - Was solid while I had him

I really struggle with a third (my defense was just so poor this season)
Mawson - given he was decent value and nicked me an odd goal

Alonso - A hero. Clean sheets, goals, assists, playing as a winger, and (eventually) on free kicks. The perfect FF defensive asset. Astonishing his ownership never really got above 15%.

McAuley - Not so many clean sheets this season but regularly popped up with attacking returns and Bonus. It also provided weeks(!) of hilarity on FFS and the scoutcast alike with THAT goal.

Maguire - 2 goals and 2 clean sheets for me in 9 appearances, was a lovely late season differential for a cheap price and helped navigate the blanks effectively.

Alonso, Coleman and Davies. Clean sheets, goals, assists, bonus points and I also love watching them play.

Special mention goes to Koscielny, van Dijk, Holebas and PVA who were part of my team in different periods (4 weeks) when they all scored 23-30 points.

To be honest my defensive picks were terrible this year and were the reason I had such a terrible start. Fuchs, Stones, Holebas, Shaw were all disasters and even Walker and Valencia started getting benched as soon as I brought them in.
As for the good guys only McAuley and briefly Coleman did well, though Lovren and Francis did ok.

Alonso - Got on him very early, ignored by most of my ML.
Walker - In my team from GWK1, stayed until his returns dried up and he started getting rotated. Fantastic in the first half of the season though.
Yoshida - What a hero he was in the latter half of the season.
Holebas - Only played him twice, once was for that sweet 15 pointer, the other was a cleanie + bonus.

Alonso - most owners would agree, I assume

Stones - the amount of frustration he caused my opponents. Priceless

Amat - 4.0 bench fodder who comes in when called upon (GW 15) and deliver a CS? Yes please. It's also comfortable to know you nailed at least 1 benching any given GW 😀

It has to be Alonso. Expensive but worth the hefty price tag. Clean sheet + Goals cannot be overlooked. He will be in my team starting next season.

Ben Davies for being the cheapest Spurs defender. Thanks Danny Rose for getting injured otherwise i wouldnt be able to afford other defenders. He also scored one goal in the last match.

      Another would be Yoshida/ Stephens.

Ben Davies - Brought him when I wildcarded in GW28. A bit of a gamble that worked out very nicely
Seamus Coleman - scored me loads of points before his season was wrecked by that horrific tackle
Cesar Azpilicueta - I didn't own him for very long, and Alonso scored me way more points, but his score in GW37 essentially won me two minileagues.

I think Davies would have a chance of getting in the best XI. I certainly wouldn't say Valencia having had him most of the season.

Alonso - brought in for Stones for a hit in GW15, 4 CS straightaway and then that 21pter in GW21, kept him through dry spell and he delivered at the end of season
McAuley - switched from Evans on early wildcard and stayed on to GW29 wildcard, 5 goals in that time for 4.5, what great value
Yoshida - brought in on 2nd wildcard, benched his goal but still got me 5 CS on the run-in (2 of those as Walker autosub)

Alonso. A goalscorer practically playing in midfield. Amazing

Mawson. For a brief period under Clement, they were solid, and he would appear in the opposition box quite regularly. Starting at 4.5 too.

Coleman. Always involved, always reliable, often scoring, solid enough defensive unit. What's not to love? Will be sorely missed at the start of the season if he doesn't make it

Alonso - his movement in and around the box made him the most exciting defender to own this season for me, always seemed hungry for a goal. He delivered CS and attacking returns for much of the season. Just when we thought that's all there was to offer....he started to take a few free kicks too, and scored a beauty ! Shame Chelsea couldn't keep up their defensive solidity until the end.

Coleman - so pleased I opted for Seamus over Leighton, a joy to watch him play, a consistent source of FPL points whilst fit, always a threat. Just hope he bounces back from that horrific injury.

Brunt - home form for a large part of the season was immense and nothing like having an OOP defender in your team who has a good chance at delivering returns at both ends of the pitch. Scored a lovely goal against Sunderland ! Shame WB form and Brunts returns dried up way before the end of the season.

      Alonso for obvious reasons...

Baines and Yoshida. As anybody else lucky enough to have rotated them from very early on after Yoshida nailed his spot would agree...A higher PPG from that duo than even Alonso, and by quite a margin.

Yoshida- Got him early, great value towards the end of the season and averaged 7+ for me! Never got big scores when benched and delivered when I played him.

Alonso- Obvious reasons, not first in my list bc others got more points from him.

Valencia- Was my the defender I played the most for 4+ average which was decent

Coleman was a great source of points but sadly he got injured too soon. Special mention to Davies as well for for averaging nearly 6 in the few games I had him.

van Dijk is pretty much self explanatory.
Cedric is defensively very solid and has a decent cross on him. Very underrated. Right back is a problem for LFC, maybe not of high priority.
Stephens would be a back up CB which is also a need. Current crop is Matip Lovren Klavan and Gomez.. 😆

Alonso, Coleman, McAuley, and Valencia my votes. Azpi is close to Valencia though.

Whens FPL start this summer? July 17?

Did a quick analysis of PpG over the season. Below I've said how many players are above 5.0 PpG, and then listed the top 3. I've also given my take on the stats.

    .
    Goalkeepers: Zero above 5.0 - Highest: Robles(4.5), Heaton(4.3), Lloris(4.2)

    Defenders: 3 above 5.0 - Top 3: Alonso(5.7), Kompany(5.2), Coleman(5.1).

    Midfielders: 11 above 5.0 - Top 3: Sanchez(6.9), Hazard(6.2), Eriksen(6.1)

    Forwards: 6 above 5.0 - Top 3: Kane(7.5) ⚽, Jesus(6.7), Lukaku(6.0)

    .
    My personal analysis:

    - There is strong evidence to support a 352 looking at this. The midfield has a lot of depth with 11 players above 5.0 PpG, and the upper-tier PpG numbers keep up with the forwards. However, you will need at least one top tier forward, as Kane is far beyond anything the midfield or anywhere else offers.

    - Go as cheap as possible for keepers. This one is obvious, but the lower tier teams generally have higher scoring keepers due to the huge number of save pts. Keepers are the lowest scorers, go light, really really light.

    - Go fairly cheap in defence. Only 3 defenders achieved over 5.0, so there really isn't much potential or depth here. You may want 1 or 2 pricier ones in case a bandwagon starts but defenders aren't generally worth a lot of investment. If Alonso does come in around the 7.0m mark, he's unlikely to match the PpG of a top performing midfielder of the same price. Therefore, your 'expensive' slots should be 6.0m max, so you can hop on a bandwagon and surf the price rises. Personally I don't go above 5.5m, but Alonso would have hurt me this season if I played, so I may be tempted to go higher 😉 But don't forget, there is value in short-term rotation. Just remember that things change quickly, so still rotate decentish defences, otherwise you'll be left stranded with a Sunderland-esque defence when the rotation breaks down due to injuries.

    - Don't skimp on the midfield. This is the most volatile place where a lot of your transfers will go. This is where a wealth of bandwagons will rise and fall. Keeping funds in these positions will make you flexible and will mean you can transition to a player in 1 transfer, avoiding hits or missing price rises.

    - Spend lots here too, but not too much. I've often been a fan of going ridiculously heavy on strikers, but the game has changed. Forwards now contribute more in the transition phase, dropping deeper, and midfielders contribute more to the attacking phase getting in and around the box frequently. However, the forwards that do score frequently are almost must haves. The 'Harry Kane's of the league will score goals on a regular basis, and that consistency is crucial for captaincy. So big funds are required here for at least one spot. With 6 players above 5.0 PpG there's not a whole lot of depth, but it's there.

    .
Probably all nonsense, but there it is 🙂

Yeah, we need a cheap starting forward. Hopefully Jorden Ayew starts at 5.0m again for Swansea. But it's doubtful. A 4.5m starting forward is usually impossible.

Unless Brighton or Newcastle make a decent signing position they are both non starters for me. Huddersfield don't score enough goals and Reading don't appeal either, The one I would be interested in if he gets another loan move is Tammy Abraham . Very raw but has strength , pace and ability.

Yeah, he does. I generally don't look a PpM because it's usually skewed heavily. If a player makes a cameo, for say, 1 minute, they get 90 PpM because of the appearance point!! The less they play, the worse it is.

But in Cesc's case PpM is a more accurate measure than PpM. It's a rare occurrence though.

This is my rough template for next year:

          GK 4.5m
          GK 4.5m
          Total: 9m

          DF 6m
          DF 5m
          DF 4.5m
          DF 4.5m
          DF 4m
          Total: 24m

          MF 10.5m
          MF 9.5m
          MF 9m
          MF 7.5m
          MF 5.5m
          Total: 42m

          FW 10m
          FW 9m
          FW 6m
          Total: 25m

          Likely to alternate between 3-4-3 & 3-5-2

Honestly feel Spurs will struggle a great deal more this year with playing @ Wembely, especially at the start. I feel United players tend to struggle to make an immeddiate impact too so I'll monitor Griezmann. Hoping I've over-estimated some players prices (e.g. KDB 10.5m, Jesus 10m, Stanislas 5.5m & Kompany 6m). All depends on fixtures who I get though, as if Kane has really nice fixtures at the start he'll be hard to ingnore.

This is good work GB, I know you suggest a 3-5-2 but how many of those 11 players over 5 PPG could you feasibly fit into a £100m starting team? Three at a push?

True, but this analysis isn't complete. There are great budget options a little further down, like Stannis at 5.1 PpG, or King at 4.9 PpG.

I was looking at those top tier options and where the widest potential of big-hitters are. You need big piles of money in those areas because they may switch around a lot, due to the larger pool.

I dunno, it all depends on prices and where you think the bargains are I suppose. Not set on a 352, I'm just entertaining the idea. But there is a limit on how much the defenders can compete with mids and forwards imo.

It's a good start but generally formations are dictated by the enablers plus 2/1 heavy striker and 2/3 heavy midfielders. Always the way.

Good analyses. Cheap goalies and nailing that one (maybe two) premium defenders is key in defense.

To me the 3-5-2 vs 3-4-3 issue comes down to where you find the value.

This year the value was in the midfield with Capue, then Phillips and later King. Next year it might be the return of Callum Wilson or Andrew Ayew as strikers.

In my experience they always end up getting priced above their actual worth. As soon as they hit 6.5 they don't up their performance to match. Zabaleta at City about three years ago being a good example. I'd steer clear of a 6.5+ defender unless there is a very good reason - OOP, set pieces etc.

My view on elite defenders is that you have to own them for long periods for them to represent value. Goals and assists are sporadic but that's what make these guys elite over the rest.
