Fantasy Football Book – Your Help Needed

Unless you’re one of the very few who follow me on Twitter, then you might not have heard that there’s going to be a Fantasy Football book.

It is, quite frankly, amazing that there isn’t one already – Fantasy grows hugely every year, with ever more players, pundits, podcasts and websites dedicated to Fantasy Premier League and a number of other games both established and new.

Penguin Random House, under the auspices of its sports imprint Yellow Jersey Press, will be the publisher and I have been handed the honour of writing it.

And it is an honour, albeit a daunting one.

The book will look at the history of the game and its future, its scope, appeal and success – particularly where Fantasy Premier League is concerned. But at its heart it will be a celebration of its players – the best and the rest, the first and the worst and everyone in between.

And that’s where you fine people come in.

I need as many stories as possible to make the book as entertaining, broad and human as it can be.

I need tales of triumph and despair, of good luck and bad, of obsession, madness and genius.

Big mini-league cash prizes for the winners, cruel and imaginative mini-league forfeits for the losers, the times that Fantasy has changed your life (maybe even saved it) for better or for worse, the range of professions (doctor, High Court judge, customer-facing adult entertainment executive) that live the Fantasy life…anything that is interesting, quirky and human is what I’m after.

So, not a lot to ask then.

But I couldn’t ask for a better community to seek help from. FFS regulars are fantastically knowledgeable, generous, smart, funny and snarky – often all at the same time. That is a great resource which needs tapping into and immortalising in print.

If you have any Fantasy stories to tell, or can think of anything I might be able to look into further, please mention it in the comments below.

You can also DM me on Twitter (@Davvawavva) and if you can be bothered to fill out a Fantasy Football questionnaire, or maybe have a story that you’d rather not talk about quite so publicly, you can email me at fantfootbook@gmail.com – anonymity can be guaranteed, if required.

Thanks for your time. I only hope I can do the game, and its players, justice.

What a great idea! Do you have a link to the questionnaire?

It's the combination of football knowledge, stats, psychology, and general competitiveness that lures me in. I don't like to bet so I'm glad FPL is not about money. I enjoy playing football and chess, FPL feels like a nice mix.

I will try to think of stories. It's odd though I find a lot of those slightly sensationalist tweets from the official FPL account, about managers who've had good weeks or bad weeks, not that interesting because generally they are about people who you can tell don't play the game that well. So I hope you find a good collection from this site, they should have a bit more substance.

Specifically about FPL etc? I know there's plenty about US fantasy sport. Could you let me know some titles? I'd like to read them (and not steal any ideas, of course).

Fantasyland by Sam Walker is genius and rotally relatable for all on this site.
Numerous stories about the founders of rotisserie baseball give you the origins.
Matthew Berry, the Talented Mr. Roto

Fantasy MLB is definitely the most important background knowledge for you to acquire.

Sam Walker once picketed outside the Angels hotel/training ground to ask the manager to reduce the suspension of a player who was crucial to Walker's fantasy lineup.

I haven't read any myself, but if you type Fantasy Premier League into the books section on Amazon, a few will come up.

If you want a story, I've got one. Sorry in advance if you don't like it. I started out this season with the sole aim of beating a casual friend of mine. Afterwards, as the season progressed, I started doing various things. My aim is to do everything that is possible in the game. Have done these:
    1. Captained heaton.
    2. Captained Holgate.
    3. Played almost all the formations.
    4. Took too many hits. etc. etc.
With the help of ffs, I've beaten my casual friend by a margin of 200+ points.

It's not that simple really.. I played the game so conservatively my first two seasons and got nice ranks but decided to change tactics this season and go for it with the hits. Worse season rank wise but possibly most fun, really don't know how to play it now.

Yeah I know, did it as well because of chasing to be fair.. It's a good debate though the whole going for rank versus just having fun with it.. You can get good ranks taking lots of hits, Andy proves that but it's harder to.

I'm not sure the way Ronka plays it is that fun, it's just not flexible enough and he suffered at the end as people eluded to because his TV was really really low.

My stories are all of woe

From my first season where I led ML from week 1 to week 37 then lost by 1 point on the final day.
To the 2012-13 season where I lost £300 prize for ML on "transfers made" after "balegate", a Mata goal being called an OG and a final day Mertersaker assist being removed as his headed pass skimmed off Podolski's shoulder. FPL overturned all of these decisions to lose me £300. Not that it still bugs me or anything.
But I did delete my account the season after 😆

        You are not wrong

I have lost two mini leagues at £500 each time

2011/12. Last minute of the season - Man City vs QOR. I'd already had Yaya Toure come off early meaning I had a potential point lost. It clocked on till the 93rd minute and the prize was mine.

        AGUERRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOO

That goal meant my mini league rival clocked up that 1 point more than me to win the prize

2016/17. I had clawed back the lead from my rival from 120 points going in with 11 players playing compared to his 7. I thought I had it in bag with 3 point difference.

It was nip and tuck all the Sunday as despite the advantage, he had captained Keane with a hatrick. I checked at 4.45pm and thought I must have still won it but was puzzled as to how his Cahill had gained 5 points.

Not only did I find the horrible news that John Terry (my player) had been substituted on 26 minutes again giving me 1 point but my rival had Cahill come in and to make it worse. Gain a clean sheet despite Chelsea already conceding. Again losing the game by 1 point. Even if Terry had come off 5 minutes later I would have won.

        Account has now been deleted.

    For me top 3 are

    Kane:- 11.4 (16 matches)
    Sanchez:- 11.2 (29 matches)
    Aguero:- 10.6 (15 matches)

Do you have a rough estimate on when it will be published? I'm assuming you'll also be writing about the psychological aspects?

I'll be doing my master's thesis next year and have been thinking about choosing fantasy sports/football as my topic. Would be nice having a bit more theoretical framework to work with as fantasy sports currently is relatively unexploited from a research point of view.

Bit of a muck up after game week 1 a few years ago and we got a free wildcard over it. I forget why.

The site crashed shortly before transfer deadline, causing many unhappy people who couldn't finalize their team. FPL had to have a second wildcard that could be used right away.

Really don't understand why Guardiola has let Clichy and Caballero go when they've been so much better than Kolarov and Bravo.

Beats me as well...rumours of Walker joining City are going big especially after his Instagram post.

Caballero isn't good enough to be a first team GK. Sagna is old now. Navas just wasn't good enough. Clichy to me is a surprise so interesting to see what Pep does at LB or LWB. Clichy will be in demand IMO.

Caballero did well when he started but of course i meant he should have stayed as a second choice. It seems like now Bravo is going to be second choice, really can't see him becoming City's first GK.

When you find yourself genuinely cheering against the team you support, you know you've gone down the rabbit hole.
    I've done that !

A work colleague a few years back had to quit FPL because he couldn't handle cheering for Arsenal (Spurs fan).

This years outright winner is an Everton who went the season without a Liverpool asset. Listen to his interview on FPL and he recounts suffering through the Suarez years.

Yep. That's what Fantasy can do to you. The winner at least acknowledged that his Liverpool allergy was in danger of costing him.

      I agree
It is quite awkward when you are in a bar full of fans who support the same team as yours and then your FPL Asset scores the last minute winner against us getting 3 BAPS as well.

Just shows how much the Liverpool players troll us. Can, Origi and Firmino this year, Moreno and rotations last year.

One abiding FPL memory - Defoe's 5 goals against Wigan. Remember it well. It was only 1-0 at half-time and I was thinking it was a captaincy bust. But then Defoe (and Spurs) exploded and put 8 past Wigan with a second half blitz. That was my first 100pt GW and all thanks to captain Defoe. That was in the days before chips as well.

With Navas gone, Is Raheem Sterling going to be the next Navas for Man City? Who gets subbed in the 70 min mark so that his pace is used against the tired defenders

I think Pep likes Sterling. But I think Sterling gets tired quickly and can't manage a full season - it was an issue at Liverpool too. Hence why he keeps getting rested in so many games.

I was delighted with Alexis 46 point captains haul this year. I was feeling glum waiting for the wife to finish shopping in Alexanderplaz thinking I had a miserable points return for the week. I nearly choked with delight on my kebab when the game week score updated. I always remember where I was with big FPL moments.
