Fantasy Football Book – Your Help Needed

Unless you’re one of the very few who follow me on Twitter, then you might not have heard that there’s going to be a Fantasy Football book.

It is, quite frankly, amazing that there isn’t one already – Fantasy grows hugely every year, with ever more players, pundits, podcasts and websites dedicated to Fantasy Premier League and a number of other games both established and new.

Penguin Random House, under the auspices of its sports imprint Yellow Jersey Press, will be the publisher and I have been handed the honour of writing it.

And it is an honour, albeit a daunting one.

The book will look at the history of the game and its future, its scope, appeal and success – particularly where Fantasy Premier League is concerned. But at its heart it will be a celebration of its players – the best and the rest, the first and the worst and everyone in between.

And that’s where you fine people come in.

I need as many stories as possible to make the book as entertaining, broad and human as it can be.

I need tales of triumph and despair, of good luck and bad, of obsession, madness and genius.

Big mini-league cash prizes for the winners, cruel and imaginative mini-league forfeits for the losers, the times that Fantasy has changed your life (maybe even saved it) for better or for worse, the range of professions (doctor, High Court judge, customer-facing adult entertainment executive) that live the Fantasy life…anything that is interesting, quirky and human is what I’m after.

So, not a lot to ask then.

But I couldn’t ask for a better community to seek help from. FFS regulars are fantastically knowledgeable, generous, smart, funny and snarky – often all at the same time. That is a great resource which needs tapping into and immortalising in print.

If you have any Fantasy stories to tell, or can think of anything I might be able to look into further, please mention it in the comments below.

You can also DM me on Twitter (@Davvawavva) and if you can be bothered to fill out a Fantasy Football questionnaire, or maybe have a story that you’d rather not talk about quite so publicly, you can email me at fantfootbook@gmail.com – anonymity can be guaranteed, if required.

Thanks for your time. I only hope I can do the game, and its players, justice.

Where would be the best place to see a list of released players from PL teams?

How do you pick your GW1 team?

What goes through your mind with regards to team balance, money ITB, fixtures and early wildcards? Do you go all in on the early GWs or set out for the long run?

If you plan to WC in GW3 / GW4 (i.e during the international break) then you should go all out for the early weeks IMO

Dude...there are so many factors influencing my decision and one of them is pre-season update of FPL site. You are chasing airy castles now. Long story short: it is too early to say anything from my perspective 🙂

It all depends on pre-season form, fixtures and news in FPL system. It is always a different story for me 🙂

Mix of class and form. Not so difficult as after a major tournament because the big names get eased in.

Established stars (Sanchez), bonus burglars (Heaton) and sleeper hits in good form from pre-season (Capoue).

Try and find good balance between positions to help with form transfers.
Get drawn into the pre-season form players, invariably pick the wrong ones.
It's always the search for the heavy hitters who are "essential" and those who are replaceable. Never an easy call and has often led to an early WC if they are in wrong positions.

Have a look at pre season results, pick a team around "reliable" names.

Started off with Sanchez, Agüero, Alli, Hazard, Baines, Shaw, Forster and Heaton. Amat was my 3rd top scorer in GW1.

        I agree.
Start with an auto-complete, look at the new prices, pick an ideal squad that is way over budget, scale it down to 100m, then keep tinkering with it as more information and ideas emerge.

Look for teams with good fixtures first 4 to 6 gws then check form in pre season and formations for oop players.

Biggest thing for me is pick players from bunch above but don't plan transfers and take as few gambles as possible (you can always transfer in that promoted striker if he starts well. In my experience it benefits to be flexible those first few gws so you don't want to be forced to take out a defender or a gk you gambled on when you want the latest cheap midfielder ion poems and playing oop.

Almost ended in a fist fight was going to drive through to another city to meet a boy who said something personal in the forum section. Luckily he phoned and apologised after a mutual friend had phoned him and told him exactly who I was and what I was capable of. Wont give too much away as dont want to get in trouble with old bill but thats a long story cut short.

    Ooooh....nice...A book.

As I've wrote many times the best way to play this game is withe a (very) mini league where all the participants live/work within close proximity of each other. There is no better way for banter and skullduggery than a league comprising just 3/4/5 players.

I have many stories but a typical one, and the one that woke me up to the possibilities, was a few years.

I had Rooney and my son had RVP...and he was ahead of me in the family ML. Rooney out scored RVP by a little nit for a week or two so I started winding my son up about him being daft spending all that money on RVP blah, blah, blah....and he took the bait.

His face was a picture on the Saturday when he realised he had done RVP > Rooney and I'd slyly done Rooney>RVP....we both captained our "swap"..I got an RVP brace and he got a blank. WHOO HOO.

Playing for OR just can't compete with moments like that

Yeah. I bet the best stories for that book will come from mini leagues though. OR is a bit colder and clinical.....ML's is where FPL meets real life.

Lukaku & Barkley will be leaving behind 35+ goals. Rooney will be a sure starter, just playing PL football and no other commitments. Likely #10 or even striker(that's clearly where he wants to play) with pens, free kicks. He'd be great value at around £9m which is where he'd be priced.

      Eriksen once again.

He's kinda like the perfect profile for this game. Good attacking player in a good team with all set pieces...well most of them. He has the stats and the profile so as a purist he's a bit of a shoe in.

Good shout, I've got a soft spot for him after how well he's done for me the last 2 seasons when everyone was looking at Alli.

Guessing he'll get a hefty price rise to 9.5ish next season though

        1. Dr Dream

Yes he will. I was surprised how cheap he was this time tbh. I'm not convinced he's a better pick than Alli, Alli is better from open play, but he just fits the profile. Level (ish) on points is about right for those two.

Agree, very enjoyable to watch. I guess all of Spurs have been this calendar year. Silva still best #10 in the league for me, I just love how he dictates the game

Silva is fantastic. It's a shame he plays a little deeper sometimes.

Well it has a section that tells you when your rivals have done a transfer. If that gives figures to it then I may be able to work out who my rivals has brought in as well. I could drive them half mad.

I played a stormer locking out my brother from about GW30. I second guessed most of his transfers and captain choices.

I was strange because at a 100pts lead by GW30 most on here said just carry on and that my ML was won, but I ignored them and went tactical....and then did you see how many clawed back lost mini leagues in the last two weeks on here?...A hundred point lead in this game isn't a lot really...

Probably not, there's a free trial you can use and it's all pretty flash but doesn't seem worth paying for.

Like Wakey said above the feature where you can find out your rivals transfers is pretty good but it can only work them out if they do 1 at a time which you can do easily enough yourself

I dont use the site tbh

When i heard that that there was a tool on the site that told so called managers what moves to do i was not happy it takes the management part out of the game and encourages herd mentality which is bad for fpl

Also the tool that predicts your rivals transfers airs of cheating to me. Fair enough if you figure it out yourself that is fair game

It is bringing spoon feeding to a whole new level imo and i wont visit the site over this

That'd be a nice idea....re AG and his "auto complete" comment...

Either the FFS site, or us as a community, should raise a team and play it by "Auto complete" to see how it does. A bit tricky deciding who to take out though.

    Should we do it?

I think an interesting team would be base every move on FFS RMT.

Pick a GW1 team that looks to be the best RMT from the tool and then play around with moves every week to see what is suggested.

And then WC, BB, saving transfers etc. is all able to be picked by the manager

    2. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I ran an auto-complete team this season. My rules were to only use 1 transfer per week max. unless players are injured, and to only transfer out flagged players, or players that have been blanking lots of games in a row. The only calls I had to make myself were the benching (difficult, because auto-complete picks a balanced team with no bench fodder) and captain decisions.

The team finished at around 500k, but had a storming start: 9 green arrows in the first 11 gameweeks, it rose as high as 5,339 OR in GW11. Predictably, it jumped on early bandwagons and it worked for the first part of the season. After a while it evened out, and it fell a lot during the DGWs.

    Greetings fantasy veterans!!!
I need advice for the next season, any help would be appreciated.
I started this season well, by the the 7th GW I was top of my 2 mini league and a random public league.
Then from GW 11 my team score started to decline significantly, by GW 17 I started to lose the lead in one league after the other, and I failed to qualify for the cup.
I finished all leagues second -140, -35 points and the public league saw some final GW drama with me coming to a tie with the leader but eventually lost to more transfers made by me.
    What did I do wrong???

    Re. frustrating stories -

I was in a fantastic position in Football Fanager's World Cup game - I heavily backed Germany against Brazil, but used a transfer to swap out Kroos for Ozil, because of his perceived extra attacking threat. Kroos went on to score 2 and set one up in the drubbing of Brazil and Ozil managed an assist. Retaining Kroos would have got me first place, and a prize of £10,000... I finished joint third in the end which had significantly less prize money.

I was also leading the Mirror game in 2015 for almost 2 months - I was away on the weekend of the double game-week in which Benteke scored a hat-trick. I captained someone else (I blame being away and rushing my moves) and lost out significantly, and ended up finishing sixth after some punts to get first back failed.

In FPL a few years ago my friend talked me out of transfers in successive weeks for players who went onto to score hat-tricks in the GW - Both Bale and Walcott (and he was an Arsenal fan). He found it hilarious and still does.
