Fantasy Football Book – Your Help Needed

Unless you’re one of the very few who follow me on Twitter, then you might not have heard that there’s going to be a Fantasy Football book.

It is, quite frankly, amazing that there isn’t one already – Fantasy grows hugely every year, with ever more players, pundits, podcasts and websites dedicated to Fantasy Premier League and a number of other games both established and new.

Penguin Random House, under the auspices of its sports imprint Yellow Jersey Press, will be the publisher and I have been handed the honour of writing it.

And it is an honour, albeit a daunting one.

The book will look at the history of the game and its future, its scope, appeal and success – particularly where Fantasy Premier League is concerned. But at its heart it will be a celebration of its players – the best and the rest, the first and the worst and everyone in between.

And that’s where you fine people come in.

I need as many stories as possible to make the book as entertaining, broad and human as it can be.

I need tales of triumph and despair, of good luck and bad, of obsession, madness and genius.

Big mini-league cash prizes for the winners, cruel and imaginative mini-league forfeits for the losers, the times that Fantasy has changed your life (maybe even saved it) for better or for worse, the range of professions (doctor, High Court judge, customer-facing adult entertainment executive) that live the Fantasy life…anything that is interesting, quirky and human is what I’m after.

So, not a lot to ask then.

But I couldn’t ask for a better community to seek help from. FFS regulars are fantastically knowledgeable, generous, smart, funny and snarky – often all at the same time. That is a great resource which needs tapping into and immortalising in print.

If you have any Fantasy stories to tell, or can think of anything I might be able to look into further, please mention it in the comments below.

You can also DM me on Twitter (@Davvawavva) and if you can be bothered to fill out a Fantasy Football questionnaire, or maybe have a story that you’d rather not talk about quite so publicly, you can email me at fantfootbook@gmail.com – anonymity can be guaranteed, if required.

Thanks for your time. I only hope I can do the game, and its players, justice.

        This is Hilarious:
"The HurriKane blows away Liechester as the Soccer Chickens close the gap on Chelsea Franchise Club at the top of the EPL League. The Three Lines soccer player inserted the soccer ball into Kasper the friendly goaltender's soccer goal interior four times as the Whitespurs won 6 to 1 at soccer."

"Real old deefense guy Terry John comes outta the sub shack to help Chelsea Franchise Club relegize Middlesburgh from the EPL League in Monday's sundown soccer in London England. Like some real cute dog that got adopted from the pound by a loving family only to go take a crap all over their house, Middlesburgh are headed right back where they came from."

        This one is absolutely hilarious

Dwayne Rooney inserts the final goalshot at Whitespurs Lane, the soccer ball taking a Rick O'Shea off Jan the Tongan before hitting the Soccer Chickens ball bag. The Whitespurs win the game 2 to 1 but will have to go play soccer some place else next year as the wrecking balls smash the place up real good. #EPLLeague

People say Lukaku flops in big games. I dont think the problem lies with him . Everton is the Problem. Agree ?

He has to play alongside likes of Barkley & Mirallas who are as greedy as they can come and they just cant pick a pass.

I think at a club like Arsenal,United or spurs with quality service behind him he will flourish. He has all the attributes to be world class striker

His biggest problem is that he thinks he's bigger and better than he is. That comes from his agent, in my opinion. Classic example was United away where he's telling Ashley Williams to shush after he was told to defend. (iirc).

In case you find it interesting and useful, here is the story of how I got into fantasy football and what led to me being so obsessed with it now. Sorry it's rather long!

I went to university in 2002 and I wasn't even that interested in football. The bunch of guys (and girls) on my corridor were, however, and we were a fiercely competitive lot. And so our (in my case) growing love of football led to the suggestion that we all start playing the now defunct Blue Square fantasy football in the 03-04 season. I'm not sure if FPL was running back then. We started just before Christmas and we all became obsessed with our teams. I got off to a very good start - two goals and two assists from Laurent Robert in the first game as I recall, but ultimately tanked, blew all my transfers in increasingly desperate attempt to regain my position, and my terrible team limped into dead last place at the end, to my great humiliation.

That summer we all played the Blue Square Euro 2004 fantasy football competition. Desperate to avoid the shame of coming last again (there was probably some sort of forfeit for the loser, there usually was!) I spent a solid week after or possibly during exams researching my team. I meticulously planned it out and was devastated, and almost abandoned my team when, in Spain's first match, Juan Carlos Valeron did not make the starting line-up. I decided I was a terrible fantasy manager and that no matter how much research I put in it would never be enough.
36 seconds after coming onto the pitch in the 59th minute, Valeron scored from a Carles Puyol assist. I had both players. It was a great tournament and I ended up finishing 15th overall. I was in the top ten for most of it and only missed out on top ten, and a cash prize, on the last day when Greece managed the incredible and kept that last, all-important clean sheet in the final. I had no Greek defenders and two Portuguese.

Needless to say I won my uni friends league and I think I won all subsequent ones. I'm not a fairly handy FPL player now, although I only migrated from Telegraph Fantasy Football about three years ago because of the terrible prizes on offer from the official FPL game. I have made about ten times as much money from fantasy football as I have spent in stakes - I wish I could say the same about my poker game! I think I owe it all to one Juan Carlos Valeron.

Two days on and still buzzing. It must be slowly starting to sink in now to the noisy neighbours , the Scousers and the London teams that united are back and back with a bang. First season for Mourinho and another treble. With Griezman coming in and Pogba and Mkhi with a season under thier belt we will br challenging with the likes of Real, Barca and Bayern.

Plus we all know Mourinho's record with his second season ;). Can see all the bitter haters have crawled under their rocks not hearing a peep out of them now they must be seething haha!

Fraudiola has proven what many who know football predicted - overrated snd mentally week. Mary Berry would have won the same amount of trophies with the teams hes managed.

      Bring on next season!!!

Get it all out, you'll feel much better 😉

I don't like Jose much as a person but he's so good at what he does, until he manages to pee off everyone he works with and has to move on that is. Still, you won't need to worry about that for another year or so. Enjoy the second season, it should be pretty good!

        My 3 seasons at FPL:
        2014/2015
Started when my brother, his son and few others told me about this game, OK, I'm always ready for some competition. I watched football many years ago but at this point I didnt follow much, but usually knew how things were going for my team, ManU.
I knew just few names, Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Lampard and few others. I started very slow, maybe around 1 million OR at Christmas.
Then I popped into this FFS site, soon got half year membership and took it more seriously following articles and advises, since my brother and most other in the family league were way above me.
Ended at OR 122,911 and 3rd in family league, was quite happy with that since climbed very much second half of season.
        2015/16
Few workbuddies also played fantasy so we started a league, and lot of talk about it (Friday and Monday at least). Opened FFS every day.
Ended at OR 9,748, won both family league and work-league
        2016/17
Things going even better, OR 1226 and nr. 4-5 in my country(Iceland) out of around 10.000. If only I had captained Kane not Sanchez then top 1k...
Look forward to next season - Thanks to all of you FFS!

I get that Bakayoko is more defensive but Keita ain't too shabby defensively either. I'd love him as a Yaya replacement.

If Alonso is going to be £7.0m in FPL next season then why aren't Cahill and Azpi also going to be similar prices? Chelsea defence could be very expensive next season.

Some news outlets suggesting City have purchased Bernardo Silva for 60m, and he's coming in for a medical.

Last bit of advice for the season lads.

Been playing the telegraph game and my rank is 335 looking to beat last years 364.

1 transfer left for the cup final. Who should I bring in? (Have Alonso, Sanchez, hazard)

        1) Costa
        2) Pedro
        3) Ozil
        4) Bellerin

It depends how much of a risk you want to take.

You have a Chelsea defender, so backing an Arsenal attacker would cover your bases, and make it unlikely that you will go up or down much, it sounds like this is what you want so in this case I'd agree with FPL Dream's suggestion of 4.

Otherwise it's a case of taking a punt that Chelsea will win and maximise their assets, in which case I'd go for 1 probably. Then you stand the chance of significantly increasing or decreasing your rank.

Screwed up my second para - brain not working today - if you want to cover bases equalise the Chelsea and Arsenal players and have a defender and attacker for each.

sorry but bo**ox! jose wouldnt wipe his ars* with any of these cups three years ago..counting the charity shield as a trophy is pathetic and he would be quick to throw that at other managers if he was in contes shoes, as would the united fans if they were still enjoying the glory years. for him to be holding his three fingers up in Stokholm shows you what a two face chameleon he is. they had a trrrible league campaign, got ch league via the back door. thats fine, something to build on but calling it a treble?? its embarrassing

Haters gonna hate and you are obviously one of them. And biased but that goes without saying.

The League Cup was his first trophy at Chelsea and he was very pleased with it then. It was his first trophy in his 2nd stint at Chelsea as well, same thing. He has never denigrated it.

Neither has he dismissed the EL, which was his first European trophy at Porto. You might have forgotten that they then won the CL the following season. He did say that the EL wasn't the competition Chelsea wanted to be in, simply because it is a CL club. Doubtless he thinks the same at United. But he didn't exactly have that option this season, did he?

All this anti-Mourinho stuff is petty and graceless. He has done a fantastic job, not just because they won 2 trophies but more because he has started to teach his players to see themselves as winners again. And that's what he does best.

sorry, but he is not living by the standards he set or the slings and arrows he has thrown at other managers for claiming the same thing, thats my point.he is holding up three fingers? he is counting the e charity shield .imagine Wenger or klopp or rafa did that. what do you think he would say?

do you not see why pool fans would be a little incredulous when we get slagged for winning three actual trophies in 2001?

What has been the worst forfeits? (Anyone worse that Genius' mini league forfeit of a tattoo for the last place manager http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/05/21/spot-the-differential-gameweek-38-5/?hc_page=4#hc_comment_15752539 )

The best prize I have won is bragging rights over my friends who proclaimed to be better managers than me. Now we don't discuss fpl anymore.

Somehow I managed to finish top of the Mumford & Sons Fantasy Football League.

The winner gets a signed Mumford & Sons football and jersey (and bragging rights).

I have yet to work out how I actually claim my prize though !!!!!

Loser buys the winner a bottle of spirit of their choice.

Previously we've done manager of the month who gets to a forfeit for the loser of the month to do and film and post to our whatsapp group... it generally involved eating/drinking/wearing/saying something they didn't want to.

        Silva Fabinho

Not sure that Fabinho is ready for that place besides Silva though. Would be great on Fernandihos place in this years City, at RB with option to fill in wherever.

Still needs defensive support on midfield IMO.

            Mendy-Otamendi-Kompany-Walker

pep goes all out attack. he's likely to go with minimum one defensive mid

Do you think FPL could include the option to set up private cash mini leagues?

They would transact all entry fees and pay out to the Top finishers at the end of the season (however the creator determined that places would be paid)

It would enable more people to join more leagues and they could take an admin fee from each league participant (similar to online poker)

A friend (James) in our mini league had been top pretty much since January last season (2015/2016). He had a seemingly unassailable lead going into game week 38. The guy in second place (Rich) rolled the dice and brought in Giroud, who then went a scored a hat trick! This put the Rich one point ahead; the first time that James had dropped out of first place in weeks.

The Man United vs. Bournemouth game was postponed to the Monday night. Rich had no players left; James had one player to play. The standard 2 appearance points would win it for James. Even a yellow card would give him one point to draw level and bring it down to goals scored.

By the 90th minute, Bournemouth hadn't scored and James was ahead by 7 points thanks to a probable clean sheet and 2 bonus points. Then, with the last kick of the season, in the 93rd minute, Chris Smalling scored an own goal leaving James devastated in second position.

That said, James then went on to finish 882nd this season. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

A newbie mate of mine was about 100 points ahead of me in our mini-league and was getting a bit too cocky.
I bet him one minute's Riverdance on the bar of his pub/restaurant on a busy night. He lost of course and then performed the dance with alarming competence.
He wouldn't bet with me the next season but still contrived to lose a bet with another mate that involved performing a karaoke Barbie Girl in full to a crowd.
He beat us this year but all he won was money 🙂

Not sure how relevant this will be for the book - I had full intentions of subbing J King into my squad - was positive I had, 100% sure. This was the week he scored his hat-trick - I went mad on the whatsapp - giving it big licks to everyone... only to find out I hadn't made the transfer, the 3 other guys around me in the mini-league had - so i plummeted down the rankings. I then refused to put him in and suffered for it.

I can't remember the names of the players involved, nor the season, but a few seasons ago I won my mini-league after assist was granted to one of my players for the his match in the final GW of the season, a couple of days after the season ended (presumably via whatever panel reviews goals and assists). Was a sweet, sweet victory over one of my best mates who ended up second 🙂
