Team Of The Season – Tom Heaton

Following a 150-point campaign in 2014/15 with Burnley, Tom Heaton was quickly installed on many pre-season watchlists. The early adopters were to be proved correct as the Claret’s keeper excelled to deliver another outstanding top-flight season.

Heaton proved to be the perfect “fire and forget” option for our 15-man squads, providing consistent returns right until the final weeks of the season.

Such was Heaton’s dominance as the stand-out option, he gained selection in our Team of the Season with a massive 77% of the vote.

The Statistics

With a starting price of just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and based on his 2014/15 output, it was something of a surprise to see Heaton only owned by 144,402 managers back in Gameweek 1.

The England international first displayed his potential as a budget option with a 10-point haul in the 2-0 victory over Liverpool in Gameweek 2, when he picked up his first maximum bonus point haul.

That ability to dominate the bonus points whenever Sean Dyche’s side kept a clean sheet would prove pivotal to Heaton’s appeal throughout the season.

He only delivered one more clean sheet prior to Gameweek 10, when he registered his second double-digit score of the season in the goalless draw against his former side Manchester United.

The Burnley keeper made 11 saves at Old Trafford – already the second time in the season he’d reached that figure in a single match – and scooped maximum bonus points once again.

A calf injury then forced him to miss two matches before he embarked on his most productive run.

Between Gameweeks 16 and 23, Heaton averaged 6.1 points per match (ppm) in a spell which included three clean sheets, eight save points, a penalty stop and 11 bonus points.

It was during this period that his price in FPL hit the 5.0 mark, with more than 800,000 managers owning the Burnley captain by Gameweek 24.

Heaton maintained his form with a further three shut-outs between Gameweeks 29 and 32 and finished the campaign with 10 clean sheets from 35 starts, with six of those coming at Turf Moor.

His price and ownership peaked in Gameweek 33, at 5.2 and 900,000 respectively, although Dyche’s men did fail to record a clean sheet in five of their last six encounters.

Heaton ended the season as the top scoring goalkeeper in FPL with 149 points – one shy of his 2014/15 tally.

He averaged 4.3 ppm, significantly better than any Burnley defender, with Michael Keane the next best with 3.2 ppm.

His total of 21 bonus points set a new record for an FPL keeper in a season, surpassing Vito Mannone’s 16 points gained with Sunderland in 2013/14.

Heaton also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million across all four positions.

The Prospects

Due to his impressive production in 2016/17, a price hike for Heaton seems almost inevitable, although if he remains under the 5.5 mark, he will doubtless prove a popular option once again.

Given that Dyche’s men eventually finished 16th in the Premier League, a price point of 5.0 would appear likely.

Heaton has shown over two seasons that he can be relied upon for around 10 clean sheets, as well as save and bonus points, so that price should still represent solid value.

Something to monitor will be the future of centre-back Keane, who is expected to leave the club in the summer.

Keane’s outstanding performances at the heart of the Clarets defence brought him his England debut in March, and he would need to be adequately replaced in order for the Burnley rearguard to remain as resilient next season.

Heaton’s ability to keep clean sheets in less difficult home matches is the primary reason for his appeal as a Fantasy asset.

But as he demonstrated with his two double-figure hauls on the road, he also has the ability to produce in any match via save points.

While 4.5 options are always popular when budgets are tight at the start of a season, Heaton’s output over the last nine months suggests that we can’t overlook him when we begin to formulate our 15-man squads in July.

Jordan Pickford’s destination and price could influence matters, but Heaton could well remain the obvious one-stop shop option again, paired with a £4.0m asset – perhaps even Burnley’s second keeper – in a £9.0m configuration.

      Same, wish I had!

Grant and Foster did pretty well until I got rid for the DGWs, though.

Played him GW1 at home to Swansea (4pts), benched Foster (10pts).

      GW2 played Foster (2pts), benched Heaton (10pts).

      Sold GW3 wildcard.

      Never bought back.

Heaton most of the season with Robinson on the bench was my method most season. Would have been better off getting Pickford and rotating though in hindsight.

TorresMagic on? I can't crack the Dead Team Challenge - but getting closer.

Could do with an extra pair of eyes on:

    Heaton
    Cahill, Coleman, Azpi, Daniels
    Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, Stanislas
    Kane (c), Lukaku (v)

    Hennessey, King, McAuley, Barnes

I reckon it might be 2550 which would get an OR of 3.

He autosubs in for all of his big scores. And Stanislas mostly scores better when he doesn't.

I do have a 343 with King and no Stanislas:

            Heaton
            Cahill, Coleman, Azpi
            King, Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen
            Kane (c), Lukaku (v), Llorente

            Hennessey, Capoue, Stephens, McAuley

But this gets 2 less than the 442 at 2548 points.

I had a go earlier in the week and got close. I used Pickford for another 0.5 and Jags as he is great to cover Coleman. Might not be possible this season. I'll try with Daniels later as I hadn't tried with him. Bertrand and Valencia were used in 442

Fair play to ORs 1 & 2 for beating that. However the Alonso factor is what's makingit a real challenge this season.

For anyone still interested - we have managed to find 3 dead teams that, if set up in GW1 and left untouched, would have achieved OR1 - but need a chip to do it.

The first XI for all 3 is:
      Heaton
      Cahill, Coleman, Azpi
      King, Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen
      Kane (c), Lukaku (v), Llorente

Bench of Pickford, Capoue, Jagielka, Yoshida (or Britos instead if Yoshida) with TC or BB used GW1 gets 2564 points

Bench of Pickford, Allen, Jagielka, Stephens gets 2565

I'm still interested to see if this can be improved.

Grant was probably as good as Butland when the latter was injured. I reckon Butland's value in FPL will depend greatly on how the Stoke defence stands up in general terms. An ageing Shawcross/Johnson etc is not going to get any better without some new blood.

I was wondering if we could have a proper discussion about having multiple teams?

Why is it that people don't like others having multiple teams?

I played with quite a few teams this year. I only used the "main" one in minileagues, and its the one i put by far the most effort into.

The other teams all have self imposed rules.
One had to have at least 20m in the bank all season
One only players with under 5% ownership
One with no players from last season's top 4
One "ghost ship" or "dead team"
One "Anti-Fantasy" team, where you have to spend at least 98m of your budget and having players who don't play is penalised. lowest points wins.
One with the only rule to try and be different to my main team

I feel like the above teams are okay to have (with the exception of the last one maybe), but I'm definitely prepared to listen to what other people have to say about them and change my mind.

    Please don't crucify me.

That being said, I'm not too bothered by it until people can use a variety of different teams to win cash leagues and such, that's cheap. Out of the 3,000,000+ players I'm sure there a plenty of teams owned by one person

      Let's say you have 2 teams A and B.
Team A plays in a league where the cash prize is 40 bucks.
Team B plays in a league where the cash prize is 20 bucks.
Entry fee for both of them is same I.e. 10 bucks.
There comes a situation like gw 37 and you captain Kane in one and Sanchez in the other. You win the league in which you have captained Kane. You would not be at a loss in either way.
I don't know if it is right or wrong but it surely is unfair.

Isn't that kind of like putting a bet on which is the opposite of the last game on your accumulator?
Surely that shouldn't really matter anyway since you've managed 2 teams to a good finish? i'm not really sure.

I only use my main team for all my cash/ friend minleagues

It's when it's being used for cash leagues it becomes a real issue for me. This has all been discussed ad nauseum before so I'll just link you to one of the better explanations:

So basically people seem mainly annoyed at the possibility of gaining advantages in minileagues by having multiple teams. and maybe to a lesser extent claiming bragging rights to more transfers.

Most are indifferent to teams with other rules applied which arent entered in cash leagues

Yeah, the main issue for me would be if you were, say hypothetically, to have numerous teams each individually entered into a different cash league so that when the end of the season comes you can play tactically in each cash league - an advantage other contestants wouldn't have.

That being said your last team is a serious one and I do still have an issue with that just less so... if you are doing well you could be depriving someone of a Top 10k finish as you could have two teams in there for example. It is against the rules to have multiple teams registered to the same unique user. If you're being silly with your extra team I don't care so much 🙂

Agree with this. Was reading the post of one lad who finished 1002 or sth. Very annoying for him.

would really classify it as being a silly team.

For example if in my main team i decided to get costa and pieters, then in the other I'd get Defoe and bellerin.

I see your point though. Maybe I'll make it a super hit heavy team next year

its also wrong if you do it so you can claim to have a better season than balders just because you are jealous of him and want to be as admired as he is.

If Pep gets Bernardo Silva, Walker, Mendy, Ederson, and Fabinho as replacements for Navas, Sagna, Clichy, Caballero, and Zabaleta...

Oh man, I'd be over the (blue) moon...

Yesterday's clearout was really interesting, hour after hour another veteran was released. And now Bernardo Silva...real statements of intent from Pep. No excuses for him now.

Rooney to Everton would be cool. Hope he doesn't go to China, but I wonder if he's even fit enough for the Everton squad.

Imagine Heaton should be 5.5m given his 150 and 149 point tallies in the game. Expect him to be 5.0m as the prices indicated on this site seem to be accurate. I might avoid him again as the team finished fairly leaky at the back.

Randolph is bloody awful. Watched him a lot at Birmingham a couple of seasons ago; every goal kick went out for a throw and he'd flap his fish-like hands at any cross that came in. Made one half decent save to my memory and for some reason was voted Championship GK of Season. I'll never know why.

Good point! or TC? would that have been better since many of those players were not starters in GW1

I may bench boost gw1 of next season to get off to a flyer, then wildcard.

I don't see why you can't use BB or TC for GW1. I have Kane as captain and need my entire bench in GW1, so I could claim another 2 points. 2552 to beat.

Heaton's Octopus save is up there with Gordon Bank's famous save for me.

Huge error getting Foster over Heaton at the start.

It's like Az keeps saying, "I need to start correcting these errors."

I got them both at week 1 and then dropped Heaton in a GW3 WC because of Albion's "stronger defence" .
      That went well ......

Banks famous save from Pale wasn't the best I ever saw. It was made by a Villa goalie called Geoff Sidebottom.

      Leicester City 3 3 Aston Villa, 08 December 1962
Davie Gibson lobbed the ball over Sidebottom who ran frantically back towards the goal, and without being able to see the ball, turned, twisted round and launched himself backwards to finger tip the ball over the bar.

Sane would be far from nailed with Bernardo Silva, Jesus and Sterling around, and that's assuming De Bruyne and David Silva only play centrally. They could be used out wide at times.

Mmm - not sure about that. I think Pep loves Sane - he did buy him, whereas he didn't buy Sterling. I reckon Sane will be a regular, if not 100% pick.

Yeah he loves Sane who will play plenty of games but you have to assume De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva (club record transfer) are going to start most games. That leaves Aguero, Jesus and Sane fighting for two spots. There will be rotation.
