Team Of The Season – Tom Heaton

Following a 150-point campaign in 2014/15 with Burnley, Tom Heaton was quickly installed on many pre-season watchlists. The early adopters were to be proved correct as the Claret’s keeper excelled to deliver another outstanding top-flight season.

Heaton proved to be the perfect “fire and forget” option for our 15-man squads, providing consistent returns right until the final weeks of the season.

Such was Heaton’s dominance as the stand-out option, he gained selection in our Team of the Season with a massive 77% of the vote.

The Statistics

With a starting price of just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and based on his 2014/15 output, it was something of a surprise to see Heaton only owned by 144,402 managers back in Gameweek 1.

The England international first displayed his potential as a budget option with a 10-point haul in the 2-0 victory over Liverpool in Gameweek 2, when he picked up his first maximum bonus point haul.

That ability to dominate the bonus points whenever Sean Dyche’s side kept a clean sheet would prove pivotal to Heaton’s appeal throughout the season.

He only delivered one more clean sheet prior to Gameweek 10, when he registered his second double-digit score of the season in the goalless draw against his former side Manchester United.

The Burnley keeper made 11 saves at Old Trafford – already the second time in the season he’d reached that figure in a single match – and scooped maximum bonus points once again.

A calf injury then forced him to miss two matches before he embarked on his most productive run.

Between Gameweeks 16 and 23, Heaton averaged 6.1 points per match (ppm) in a spell which included three clean sheets, eight save points, a penalty stop and 11 bonus points.

It was during this period that his price in FPL hit the 5.0 mark, with more than 800,000 managers owning the Burnley captain by Gameweek 24.

Heaton maintained his form with a further three shut-outs between Gameweeks 29 and 32 and finished the campaign with 10 clean sheets from 35 starts, with six of those coming at Turf Moor.

His price and ownership peaked in Gameweek 33, at 5.2 and 900,000 respectively, although Dyche’s men did fail to record a clean sheet in five of their last six encounters.

Heaton ended the season as the top scoring goalkeeper in FPL with 149 points – one shy of his 2014/15 tally.

He averaged 4.3 ppm, significantly better than any Burnley defender, with Michael Keane the next best with 3.2 ppm.

His total of 21 bonus points set a new record for an FPL keeper in a season, surpassing Vito Mannone’s 16 points gained with Sunderland in 2013/14.

Heaton also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million across all four positions.

The Prospects

Due to his impressive production in 2016/17, a price hike for Heaton seems almost inevitable, although if he remains under the 5.5 mark, he will doubtless prove a popular option once again.

Given that Dyche’s men eventually finished 16th in the Premier League, a price point of 5.0 would appear likely.

Heaton has shown over two seasons that he can be relied upon for around 10 clean sheets, as well as save and bonus points, so that price should still represent solid value.

Something to monitor will be the future of centre-back Keane, who is expected to leave the club in the summer.

Keane’s outstanding performances at the heart of the Clarets defence brought him his England debut in March, and he would need to be adequately replaced in order for the Burnley rearguard to remain as resilient next season.

Heaton’s ability to keep clean sheets in less difficult home matches is the primary reason for his appeal as a Fantasy asset.

But as he demonstrated with his two double-figure hauls on the road, he also has the ability to produce in any match via save points.

While 4.5 options are always popular when budgets are tight at the start of a season, Heaton’s output over the last nine months suggests that we can’t overlook him when we begin to formulate our 15-man squads in July.

Jordan Pickford’s destination and price could influence matters, but Heaton could well remain the obvious one-stop shop option again, paired with a £4.0m asset – perhaps even Burnley’s second keeper – in a £9.0m configuration.

Am I right in thinking KdB may be the only nailed on City attacker?

Is Jesus safe now that the wings have gotten more cluttered? I suppose that depends if Aguero stays...

KdB could be in for a huge FPL season looking at the talent surrounding him...

I think so. Hardly got benched this year, and if Nolito goes as expected, Sane's got no real competition at LW. Pep doesn't seem to have much faith in Sterling play on the left.

That's the thing, Sterling usually plays on the right, him and Bernardo are going to be vying for gametime. Pep only plays Sterling at LW in the latter stages of a game that we're winning, I'm fairly sure he didn't even start four games at LW

Jesus could play out wide if Aguero starts. He can play either side. Pretty sure Bernardo Silva can play either side as well. I expect Sane to be a regular but there will be rotation in all of the attacking positions.

David Silva will be nailed too

      Gundogan. KdB. Silva

      Bernardo. Jesus. Aguero / sane

By the time of the DGWs, however, Pep was pretty consistent in playing his best/favourite players - Silva, KDB and Sane were all nailed for instance.

I'll definitely be in the 'wait and see' camp as far as City is concerned. I'm sure I'll miss some hauls but who knows where they'll come from.

I think Jesus is nailed anyway. Pep practically jizzed after the first game he started when the journalist asked him if he will be started again "what do you think?" with that stupid smile I want to smack off his face. He will play him and KDB for sure. Aguero is more likely to get rotated than them.

FPL please remove awarding bonus points for goals, assists & CS, players already get points for these.

Will make baps much fairer and bring more 'fringe' players into the game.

This would be interesting... only wouldn't it mean defenders/DMs get pretty much all the baps considering they don't get theirs from goals/assists and forwards do? All forwards would finish with less than 10 bap score in a game, and defensive players around 15/20 or whatever

          Exactly, which needs to happen.

We need more than the core 50 players involved. There are 200 players that don't get a look in, in the game. They might as well not be on the lists.

This would make it pretty much impossible for strikers to get bonus which weakens them significantly as captaincy options, especially as they already get less points per goal than a midfielder or defender. No thank you.

Just add a bonus for a shot on target, remove the -1 for a shot off target, and then you reward the striker. I agree with Jaf - at the moment a striker can do next to nothing all game but score a penalty that they did nothing to earn and they walk away with 3 bonus.

Why not just lower the BPS awarded for a goal to prevent that from happening? Much better solution than getting rid of it altogether.

No I think the "normal " points system is ok. Except would make defenders goals count for seven

Ideally there would be two midfield categories. Defensive mids who get six for goal. Two for sheet. Four for assist

Mids and strikers tend to be scoring similar levels of pts so I think it's balanced as it is. Baps give more value to goals, they aren't just 4pts.

Any something like 'scout picks for the season' (for next season of course) in FFS? If any, when it will launch? Before GW1 deadline or after transfer market closed?

There's usually many articles that are geared toward helping you select a team. E.g. Analysis around promoted teams, rotations, budget options, etc. Last season there was the weekly shop and the scout picks, so if these continue, then that'll be the answer to your question.

And how do liverpool strengthen. Realistically. Say 120m

I would say centre back. Defensive mid. Striker. And another wing option

40m. 30m. 40m. 10m. Could do worse than getting clichy on a free to rotate left back

    1. The Big Fella
      • 7 Years

Left back, GK, CB, DM, striker an attacking MF who can play anywhere on the wing or as a 10. There is quite a lot of work to be done there I think.

Agreed. And keep the replaced players as squad players. Can wijnaldum Firmino Sturridge on bench is what they should be looking at

Don't agree with the first one. Wijnaldum has been amazing for them this season! Really underrated. He is a bit like a Dembele - the team plays better with him in it but he isn't necessarily going to get 7 goals in 2 games or record number of assists. I also think Firmino has been good under Klopp. Sturridge I'd sell and use the cash to bring a player not made of glass.

I would take him over Morata and Lukaku any day, the guy is possibly the top striker around right now.If he has handed in a transfer request then i could see a lot of the top teams going in for him.

Real Madrid will be looking for a new striker with Benzema not being as good as he once was and Morata looking likely to leave. United, City, PSG, i'm sure they will all be linked. I think that if is available then we should in for him too.

Can already start to feel myself getting angry with Lamela for next season.

You just know he is going to troll Alli, Eriksen & Son owners hard. Will get the odd run of games, meaning one of these three will sit out and when he plays be greedier than the love child of Sturridge & Miralles. And miss tons of opportunities. He missed this season and will want to join the party next.

I really hope he leaves Spurs.

Presumably, those voting for Coleman in the defender of the year poll, must have forgotten he was injured for the latter part of the season.

He played enough in my opinion - more than two thirds of the season. Only the Chelsea trio, Walker, Baines and Daniels with more points than him. More than deserves a vote.

Needs to be judged on a whole season imo or close as can be. I only had him in my team for a few weeks when he was "hot" and EVR had the fixtures.

          • 8 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

Sure, me too, but if you look at the whole season: played 26 games, 4 goals and 4 assists, that's more than enough.

Alonso only played four more games for example.

He is somewhere on the cusp of not being considered, but the fact that he outscored most other defenders while playing fewer games is enough to make him eligible in my opinion.

Why is Guardiola randomly signing players? What's the point of Bernardo Silva when you already have Sterling who did really well in the first half of the season before he got tired? Shouldn't he be signing players they actually need? Like, i don't know....maybe a centre back, two right backs, a left back and a goalkeeper?

    1. fedolefan
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Sterling's time is probably up and he doesn't believe in defenders. Only people who can keep the ball and pass the ball.

      1. Frank Black
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

He might not believe in defenders but he needs them and not just to be able to field 11 players but to actually, you know, win stuff.

Bernardo Silva scored 8 goals and 11 assists in a low level league like the Ligue 1 this season, not exactly monstrous numbers.
