The Community Round Up

The dust has barely settled on the season and already the community is looking ahead to the next campaign. Potential Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rule changes, Spurs’ temporary home and Manchester United’s transfer activity are among the forward-thinking topics under discussion.

However, there are still some outstanding issues following the final set of fixtures of 2016/17 to consider. Our community articles find out how Fantasy Premier League’s best managers fared this season, while our Members tables take stock of the season’s best forwards and attacking defenders.

We finish off with a look at those who scooped top honours across our community competitions.

The Community Articles

There were mixed fortunes for last season’s top five in the Career Hall of Fame, according to Top Marx’s round-up of their Gameweek 38 transfers and scores. This detailed series has become an excellent regular addition to our community articles over the season.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Among issues for next season under consideration are potential changes to FPL with PKW calling for an ambitious overhaul of the bonus system, prizes and transfer market.

For FPL Virgin he wants to see a more modest revamp, involving greater rewards for clean sheets and, bizarrely, extra points for those players who miss out due to a team-mate’s hairline.

Another consideration for the season ahead is how Spurs will perform when their home games take place at Wembley, while they await construction of their new stadium. As Top Marx points out this is a venue that has not brought Mauricio Pochettino’s side positive results in recent cup competitions.

A price hike for Spurs talisman Harry Kane looks inevitable following a second successive Golden Boot, so we asked whether he will justify the extra outlay, especially as his team has to settle into a temporary home?

While Manchester United excelled in cup competitions, despite the best efforts of a psychic cow, their Premier League campaign was disappointing. With the Red Devils finishing in sixth, 24 points behind champions Chelsea, reinforcements will be needed next season. Among potential new recruits is Athletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, with Andy85wsm launching a discussion on the Frenchman earlier in the week.

While there is uncertainty over Manchester United’s line-up next season, at least one key aspect of the 2017/18 campaign is written in stone, according to Parm – FPL will definitely launch during the week of July 10th.

That leaves plenty of time to take stock of 2016/17’s high lows and crucially, lessons learned.

Somethodox delivered his key 20 lessons he has taken from the season, while our Gameweek 38 rough with the smooth round-up gave the community a final chance before next season to brag about a stellar weekly score, or plead for sympathy after it all went array.

Those who sealed a top 1,000 finish should really have very few gripes. This week AA33 has started compiling a roll call of the very many community regulars who were part of this elite group at the season’s close.

The summer break also gives us an opportunity to look back on some of the best players of the season. With our polling starting this week on 2016/17’s best Fantasy assets we asked who were your favourite keepers and defenders.

There was further rearguard discussion via Samwise the brave, who issued a plea for tips on developing a high scoring defence. Investing in Chelsea’s backline could be key, according to Vibudh’s hot topic on the champion’s best players.

Finally, We’re All Obsessed has been surveying how many points the community has won or lost through FPL’s chips. Based on a sample size of almost 50 managers, this revealed that Bench Boost is by some distance the most lucrative source of extra points.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.

The Members Tables

Our Members Tables offer a wealth of information for those looking to assess the best players of 2016/17 as they prepare for next season. The most recent and most popular tables can be found via the Members home page, and we urge you to also create your own.

As an example of the range of information available my One Stat To Rule Them table offers an insight into the season’s sharpest shooters, while my Attacking Defenders table gives an indication of the players capable of earning points at both ends of the pitch.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Boris Bodega has won our 2016/17 Scout Picks Champion contest, where each week a community member aims to beat our selection by the biggest margin. His 33-point victory over the Scouts in Gameweek 15 proved impossible to beat, and he scoops a £100 Amazon voucher as well as a place in our Contributors and Moderators League next season.

The final Scout Picks champion of the season, Rossendale Rover, beat the Scouts 82-67.

Kings of Lyon has won Gnu’s Wigan to me H2H contest, beating second placed Royscalleranne, who missed out again in HVT’s Irish Contingent league. After leading this for a number of Gameweeks he was overtaken by Godot by just two points. Both finished in the top 1,000, and Potatoace came third.

In Red Lightning’s January to May league Mike Gallagher finished top with a Gameweek 38 score of 104, closely followed by Niklas Zanden. Long time leader RuthNZ dipped down to fifth with a score of 77 in the season finale.

Jon Vetle Vamraak retained his lead to be crowned champion of Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league.

Mark scooped top spot at the end of the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league campaign, with a 13-point lead over second placed TorresMagic.

In my Millionaires Club, for those with a rank the wrong side of one million at the Gameweek 12 mark, long time leader Gilles Wanlin finished on top with a commanding 38 point lead over Tim Baildam.

If you are running a community tournament over the summer or heading into next season and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

He didn't show that in Serie A this season! Got to the point where he was making a big mistake pretty much every week, even the Torino president came out and said he was disappointed with him. He's actually been quite lucky that the spotlight hasn't been on him in the UK press since Christmas otherwise his stock would have fallen even further.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has already asked City’s Spanish sporting director Txiki Begiristain about taking Mangala to St James’ Park this summer.

Would be a decent signing me thinks.

Hopefully. Need some cheap options. I think next season I'll be going slightly cheaper in defence than I usually do. Thinking something like 6.0/5.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 x3. Usually I have x2 6.0/5.5

Sounds good. Rafa should have them well organised next season. Might be some value in defensive assets - maybe Yedlin?

Have some doubt if Yedlin is good enough for Prem. But will be fun trying to find bargains in promoted sides. 🙂

Yeah it's always fun trying to find the £4.5m gems from the promoted teams. Heaton the obvious one last season and a couple of the Boro defenders.

I wonder what price Lascelles will be? He offers some goal threat doesn't he? Certainly more than Mangala if he signs (poor goal scoring record from what I remember).

Lascelles is a terrible defender. It is no surprise that Newcastle's form improved in the last few games (i.e. when they won the title) after he was left out of the team.

Almost as bad IMO. They need to sign CBs asap - I would go for Sakho and Mangala if I was Benitez and the money is there. They have attacking talent in Atsu, Ritchie, Gouffran, Perez and Gayle. But Shelvey is not good enough IMO either. So a good CM, is a must too.

Oh really? Was he dropped due to form then?

I thought he was the captain and thought of quite highly? I'm no expert on Newcastle to be fair (or anything else for that matter 😉 )

He is captain, but Benitez is ruthless and his form dropped off. Same with Mbemba. CB is the position that needs most strengthening IMO along with a Shelvey replacement.

What a load of rubbish. Gouffran can hardly be considered attacking talent (doubt he'll even be at Newcastle next season) and Clark has been the player of the season. I say this as an NUFC season ticket holder. Only players I'd consider from the current squad are Ritchie and perhaps Gayle - though I wouldn't start with either.

Player of the season is Ritchie (followed by Gayle). This is the PL - Lascelles, Hanley, Clark and Mbemba are not going to cut it. Getting rid of Sels as the first choice GK was a good decision by Benitez too. Look at the results against teams in the Top 7 in the Championship:

Won 5, Drawn 2, Lost 5. Ignoring the home and away losses to Blackburn (which was crap) it was poor against the better Championship sides. And even the dross in the PL (e.g Stoke, Watford) are better than those Top 7 Championship sides.

Need to strengthen the defence first. Replace Shelvey. Gayle, Perez, Ritchie, Diame, Gouffran, Atsu have enough about them to do the attacking business against the dross in the PL.

Fantasy ICC question. What looks the best way to start with line up? 4 x ENG, 3 x BAN and a couple of AUS and NZ is how I'm set up now. Bit worried about overlooking the other 4 nations though. Reckon I should start with one player from each of the 4 nations I've missed out to minimise future transfers?

You get 20 transfers across 12 games. I am going heavy on England and Australia with some New Zealand and India. The real question is how many bowlers to pick? Do we think the pitches will be batsman friendly and batsman will get more points?

How do you see Newcastle performing in the Premier League? In real terms, not fantasy terms that is. I have to say, you look at the squad the way it is now and you think they're going straight back down. Need some good signings to survive.

I think they are fine going forward. Much better placed than Burnley, 'Boro and Hull were. But I think they will struggle defensively. If Krul is back to form and they sign some decent CBs then I think they will be fine.

They would struggle initially. But as soon as the TV money came in they would do well. Why play for WBA when you could play in front of 60,000 in a great stadium for a club with lots of history. After time they would challenge the Top 6 teams as they could break their current wage structure and shell out on players.

Very good point. But they've no right to just waltz into the Premier League, the Football League clubs would be having none of that.

Also, where would that leave Scotland.

Only way for me is a merging of the two leagues into one, with regional divisions lower down.

Why would Rodgers go to Palace? He can build something at Celtic and play in the CL. It will take time and he and his team will have to be smart, but Palace can't offer that.

He can earn about 14 times more at Palace, can attract and develop far superior players and compete in a league that challenges him where good performances would earn him much more credit and recognition, so yeah.

But he will never win anything at Palace - he won't be able to compete in Europe either. Do you think people think Rodgers is doing a crap job at Celtic? Celtic is not about the league - it is about Europe.

He can win a one team league at Celtic and is at very best going to make the last 16 of the CL. Hardly fulfilling. He's not going to leave Celtic for a top club, Palace is an ideal stepping stone to help him win trophies worth winning.

Surely WK are the value given points for catches and stumpings. De Kock opens the batting (so exposure to lots of overs) and has form in England. Jason Roy is similar in that he can explode. Buttler is a punt but he can go off too if he gets a chance and I can see him being moved up the order if England are firing and they want to go for it. Malinga is difficult as I am struggling on the last bowler.

Stumpings and catches are too risky to depend on. Better to depend on all rounders like Stokes, Morris and other explosive options.

I think I'll nail my colours to the Arsenal mast today for several reasons.

      1. Sanchez's possible last match for the gunners and it'd be fitting for him to leave on a high.
      2. For Arsne Wenger for putting up with all that over the top stick from his own fans, who behave like they're about to get relegated every season....or indeed have been relegated.
3.They deserve it for trying to play good football year after year. I'd hate to think that Mourinho would be able to say his way is the only way whilst having a pop at Wenger again with no trophy.
      4. I really don't want to watch another John Terry love in when he comes on for the last 26 mins.

          I quite like them...great team.

Tbh the only teams I really don't like are WBA, or rather Tony Pulis's WBA, and some of the teams/tactics that Mourinho has deployed over the years. That's more about not liking a managers style rather than not liking the club though. I could easily be persuaded to like WBA or United if they played a bit more attacking play.
