Team Of The Season – Marcos Alonso

His arrival at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina on the final day of August was unheralded and his league debut a losing one, but Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso would go on to become one of the key Fantasy assets in the 2016/17 campaign.

The Spaniard was brought on in the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal back in September – the moment when Blues boss Antonio Conte first switched to a three-man defence with wing-backs.

Neither side nor player looked back from that point, and with 30 % of the votes, Alonso becomes the first of our three-man defence in the Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Alonso made his first league start in the 2-0 win over Hull City in Gameweek 7, when he was available for 5.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), down from his initial starting price of 6.0.

At that point, the Spaniard was owned by a mere 20,523 managers in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his performance at the KCOM Stadium provided an immediate indication of the attacking threat he would provide.

He registered five goal attempts against the Tigers – more than any other player involved – and also led the way for chances created (four).

That clean sheet was the first of six consecutive shut-outs for the new-look Chelsea backline, with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill combining in central defence and Alonso and Victor Moses operating as wing-backs.

He registered his first attacking returns with an assist in the emphatic 4-0 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 9 and opened his account for his new club with a goal in the comprehensive 5-0 victory over Everton in Gameweek 11.

The wing-back produced his first double-figure haul that day, totalling 13 points.

Following that impressive performance, Alonso saw his price shoot up to 6.3 in FPL prior to the Gameweek 12 trip to Middlesbrough, with over 300,000 managers adopting him by that point.

Conte’s men put together another run of four successive clean sheets between Gameweeks 15 and 19, but it was in Gameweek 21 when Alonso produced one of the definitive performances of the season.

The defender scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Leicester City and, with what turned out to be his only maximum bonus point haul of the season, he provided a sensational 21-point return.

Although the clean sheets dried up during the second half of the season, Alonso registered a further three goals and two assists as his price climbed to 6.9 by Gameweek 38.

He ended the season as the joint-top scoring defender in FPL with six goals, while he also provided five assists, one behind the league-leading six from Spurs’ Kyle Walker.

He was also the second-highest scoring defender in FPL with 177 points – one behind team-mate Cahill – with Azpilicueta (170) completing an all-Chelsea top three.

Alonso did average 5.7 points per match (ppm) though, significantly better than Cahill (4.8) and Azpilicueta (4.5).

His underlying statistics were also outstanding, registering more goal attempts (46), shots from inside the box (25) and shots on target (16) than any other FPL defender.

Interestingly, Alonso didn’t fare that well when it came to bonus points, only managing 11 compared to 22 for Azpilicueta and 15 for Cahill.

In a nutshell, Alonso could not compete with that pair for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), or completed passes – both factors which impacted on his Bonus Points System tallies.

The Prospects

Alonso will inevitably earn a price hike next season.

Many will no doubt ponder whether out-and-out wing-backs such as Alonso should be reclassified as midfielders, but a price tag of between 7.0 and 7.5 as a defender appears the most likely outcome.

The classification of Victor Moses could also affect Alonso’s stock.

If he’s also a defender next season, the Nigerian will surely be priced lower than Alonso, although his tally of three goals and three assists was inferior.

All of Chelsea’s defensive starters look set to rise in value, with a minimum price of 6.5 perhaps likely across the board.

With Champions League fixtures on the agenda, we perhaps need to assess Chelsea’s defensive assets with more caution.

Conte will look to strengthen his squad over the summer, with alternatives in the wing-back positions likely to be one of the priorities.

That will need monitoring, with the calibre of new acquisitions dictating whether Alonso could be a rotation risk.

But based on his performances this season, Alonso will surely be expected to remain the first-choice.

He could also justify a hefty price tag, with Conte likely to build the Blues’ title defence around the quest for clean sheets.

We will be keen to monitor Alonso’s early numbers to assess if there is any marked regression, but it’s doubtful whether that will make us wary of investment.

Should Chelsea’s opening fixtures bless them with a favourable start, Alonso will likely remain the go-to option for most, particularly if he is priced at just 0.5 more than his defensive team-mates.

Offer has been on the table to Lucien Favre for a while. Think the process was just delayed until after the DFB-Pokal final. Kicker are currently saying that terms are now agreed with Favre, but nothing confirmed just yet.

There is also a debate between the merits of 352 v 343.

Missing out on a 3rd 'proper' striker can really kill you if the third striker is heavily owned, which is often the case due to the lack of choice - e.g. Lukaku, Costa, Ibra combo last season and not a great amount of other options - Aguero was in there but seemed to kill the rest of the team.

In comparison a 4th mid is generally a 10% owned player due to the wider choice of mids.

Does ownership play a big part in your team formation strategy?

Ownership has never played a major role in my strategy.

Only if I am very confused between 2 players as to whom to pick (eg. Alli vs Eriksen) then I look at the Ownership number

I never play the ownership game in terms of who to pick up, who to captain, etc.

I pick the players I think will score the most. That really simplifies things for me.

2 more years of a decent start, a November meltdown as fixtures take their toll, a winter rally, a complacent defeat to a mid-table team at home in March, then a late surge as we realise "oh **** we'd better try and salvage it".... or a new tale?

I really don't know. But I hope he buys 2/3 established players for big money to both assuage the fears of, and massively complement, our big two (particularly Sanchez) and really, really push this year.

Been saying all year these issues are systemic - they keep happening, the same kind of issues (fragile confidence; out of UCL in early on; refusal to sign players we actually need (le donkey as one of the two main forwards, anyone??)) year after year. Personally very sceptical about this and will need convincing, but I was a reluctant convert to the Wenger out brigade rather than a rabid Arsenal TV loonie... so the door's open. With 3-5-2, he's shown to some extent the old dog can learn new tricks... lets hope he signs some decent players who will be in, or threaten to be in the team, early on like City have rather than yet another late trolley dash giving us sub-par / underused signings (Lucas who?)

As a manager i'd be one of those that looked at the team and spent only on what was the weakest link and buy an upgrade...rather than running off with fanciful ideas about just buying the best payers I could find.

I'd actually have to conclude that the current Spurs team doesn't have a weak link.

You've got this breed of pundits now like Chris Sutton and when he's on, Sean Dyche, who think aggression equals intelligence. Dyche said on Five Live that Michael Cox had no right to comment on football tactics because he'd never played the game. The arrogance of the man is astounding.

Jury out on if he's still an automatic pick for the first xi, especially as (Boom)Xhaka(laka) and Rambo seem to have forged some sort of understanding now.

Wenger staying at least suggests that Arsenal will continue with their 3 at the back next season.

Got me thinking that Bellerin could be next season's Alonso? Of course, Alonso may very well be next season's Alonso.

Suspect he might well be off to Barca if reports are to believed. Kolasinic (provided that is actually happening) might be one to keep an eye on for your Alonso equivalent. Oxlade could see a rebirth as a Moses-esque right winger.

If we stick to 3 at the back, the one to have might well be Rob Holding provided he avoids the (perhaps rather harsh if he does get it) 5.0. Feel like he might well be there along with Stafi and Kosc for the whole season if we don't sign another CB.

      1. Rum Ham
        • 9 Years

I think the fact he has been in and out of the side this season favours him staying at Arsenal. Naturally, if there was concrete interest from Barca though he'd probably head back.

If Bellerin looks to be the first choice RWB over Ox I would probably favour him over Kolasinac just going off what I have seen at the end of this season.

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again - great name, made me smile! Rum Ham!!!

Yea I'd agree - there was a time a couple of seasons back where he was 6.5 and seemingly worth every penny, you were backing him to get you 6+ in every game. Less so this year, despite me thinking at the start he would kick on. If he's still there come the start of the season I think I would agree with you.

Yeah I think it's this and also a refusal to acknowledge that these issues keep recurring and are systemic to him (overt loyalty to poor players, odd deficiencies in set piece defending, aversion to signing strong-willed players for fear they'll rock the boat) that really gets fans' backs up. OK ArsenalTV makes it look bad, but on the whole the fans aren't total idiots and can spot patterns/trends. It's the same issues year after year, and it's the denial more than anything else that has converted a lot of people reluctantly (myself included) into the Wenger out camp... obviously today's news means I'm willing to give him yet another chance as I've no choice, but he's got a lot to do.

Started at 6.5 this year and went all the way down to 5.9. But could be 7, yeah.

As for Pogba, even this year, what could have been, if those woodworks were goals and if anyone at United didnt need 6 chances for a goal. A bit more forward with more freedom would be exquisite to see in terms of FPL.

Chelsea U23 player. Leaving because he wants more first team game time but would be surprised if he'll get much more at Pool. Striker, good in the youth levels, one actual season in Eredivisie with Vitesse where he performed okay.

Doubt he'll have much of a role for Pool in the league next season, could be a case of getting him cheap now and selling him in a few seasons for a decent profit.

Yep, all I see it as is a purely business transaction. If he scores some goals along the way then all the better and you never know how a young player will kick on. I'd be shocked if a profit wasn't made on him, might only be £10 million or something but you can build up handy revenues trading players like that.

I can't qualify him as really good as he's only had one proper top level season and he wasn't great then. Very young, has talent, U23 player most likely with some first team squad action in cups maybe. Should be able to build his value a bit, maybe make some decent ££ on him in the future.

To be fair they're not investing much on this signing and the kid is proven to have great potential. That alone says it's a good signing, whether or not it pays off will be a different story.

            • 14 Years

The lack of money spent is the big one, they can profit on him as he's an English under age player.

As for potential, again I'm just not sure how much is there. He's talented, talented enough to develop into a big player for Pool? We'll find out but his returns at Vitesse were a bit of a let down. Again though, he's still very young. So I can't say he's good or bad, he's a cheap signing who should go up in value so at the very least they'll make profit on him if it doesn't work out.

For me the not investing much would be the problem. They are back in the cl now they have to show some serious ambition.

Ah I reckon this is just a bit of business. Will cost them £3 million or so at tribunal, hang onto him a couple of seasons, loan him out maybe, sell for £15 million.

Maybe they're just beefing up the U23s for now, with the 'possibility' of him becoming good enough to step up? Even if he doesn't amount to much they could make profit.

Don't get the big deal. United are always building on the youth with a constant flow of new additions (Chong, Boonen, DJ Buffonge, Poole, Olosunde, Bohui etc). Liverpool are also currently banned for 2 years from signing anyone U16, plus their reserves aren't all that.

Sanchez looking more and more likely to come to City. A South American frontline of Jesus-Aguero-Sanchez would be pretty cool.

I didn't want this signing to happen before, but I think Pep loves to rotate and everyone will get gametime over all the competitions. Only concerns are FPL and how well the team will gel together.

As a City fan though, this would be really cool. Sanchez is UCL quality.

I think if Pep has learnt anything it's that you need your heavyweight stars on the pitch.

Although the way they are signing players the subs are good enough to start for other teams.

The likes of Sterling are on borrowed time now.

Did very well at the beginning but regressed as the season went on. If he had better end product, especially in the finishing department, he would be amazing.

Still gives us a directness and pace that very few on our team can provide apart from Jesus, Aguero, and Sane...but they're miles more efficient

100% promise you that wasn't me, heck, I though Bernardo Silva was signing for United the second he flew into Manchester.

United weirdly has more pulling power on transfers than us (probably due to history and reputation), I think that's only changed recently with Guardiola coming in. Pogba was always going back to United.

Tbh I think the biggest pulling power for Manchester sides at the moment is £££. While in the last ten years both have had some title glory one of them needs to win it soon (City starting to look strong for next season) and I doubt anyone joins expecting Champions League success.

It's funny because every City signing rambles about "joining the City/Pep project" and every United signing goes on about history and "joining one of the greatest clubs in the world"

Both fairly true points, but neither are particularly delivering recently. You're right, money is a huge part of it, and the other part is the project vs. reputation...and that part needs to start delivering

Such an interesting debate. I think I did nail this one on the head though:

"If Pep wins the title for City in his first season with the quality in the PL right now, the debate is over in my eyes. If he doesn't, and Mourinho wins, then the instant argument Pep fans will fall back on is that he was just getting introduced to the new league, which is an excuse that wouldn't fly if Pep didn't win the following season.

With that in mind, I'd definitely say their performances in Manchester will be a fair measure of how they compare. And you better believe they know it too."

Exactly what's happening right now. And we didn't even factor Conte in!

Riyad Mahrez has released a statement confirming it is 'time for me to move on' from Leicester City.

"Out of the huge admiration and respect I hold for Leicester City Football Club I wanted to be totally honest and transparent with them and have therefore informed the club that I feel now is the time for me to move on.

"I had a good discussion with the Chairman last summer and we agreed at that time that I would stay for another year in order to help the club as best as I could following the transition of winning the title and in the Champions League.

"However, I am fiercely ambitious and feel that now is the time to move on to a new experience.

"I've always enjoyed a good relationship with the Chairman and everyone at the club, and I hope I have been able to repay the faith shown to me by my performances and commitment on the pitch during my time here.

"I've had the four best seasons of my career at Leicester and have loved every moment. I feel immense pride to have been a part of what we have achieved during my time at the club, culminating in becoming Premier League Champions.

"The relationship I share with the club and our amazing fans is something I will treasure forever and I truly hope they will understand and respect my decision."

Would love to see him at Spurs. He needs to play for s team that lets him let loose with his creativity.

My money is on Arsenal - I think they were close last summer amid all the Vardy stuff. However, is there a team that couldn't benefit from Mahrez? What do we think £20 mill?

Surely in the thirties I'd say. 20m would be an absolute steal!

Agree but what's his contract status? The bidding war will be wages I reckon.

I think he would want another crack at the champions league tbh. Spurs look a great fit for me. Need that extra bit of quality and depth in the attacking poditions

Spurs want explosive pace though - Zaha has been the target - is Mahrez that fit? Could be.

Spurs seem to like 3 AMs behind the striker these days with Eriksen Alli Son, Son has off days.

Yeah thin on the ground after those 3. Mahrez would fit like a glove at spurs

Mahrez no slouch. Bit of a trade off really give up a bit of pace for that extra proven quality in the final third.

Agree, Spurs need a Mane type to compliment the others

But who does he displace in that Spurs line-up? Liverpool have Mane on that wing too. Arsenal seem the best bet as they may be after a Sanchez replacement... will be an interesting one to watch pan out - Mahrez has that something special 😀

Son as good as he has been this season mahrez is a serious upgrade imo

Different position though. I guess it would mean switching Eriksen to the left. Would they dare tamper with that given the form he's been in this season? I do agree though, if I was Spurs I'd go all out for him. Their line-up doesn't appear to have any weaknesses so all they can do now is try and capture some more star players

They're all pretty central anyway (Son sometimes wide). Eriksen being on the left will still be pretty central, and Mahrez playing the Son role on the right instead. Eriksen being 2 footed helps that too and he's played on the 'left' (on paper) a lot before

Doesn't Ozil do all the things Mahrez does for Arsenal? Where does he fit in?

I'd argue that Ozil isn't anywhere near as direct as Mahrez.

Mahrez has the ball on a string dribbling at pace.

Hmm, perhaps. If Sanchez stays I don't see where Mahrez fits in though, especially if Arsenal keep playing 3-4-2-1. (unless Sanchez is up front with Ozil and Mahrez behind him)

Ozil out, Mahrez in possibly - Mahrez much more of a goal threat and formation suits imo

I think what was lacking is power from right-wing this season. Theo was looking very poor in terms of power and wing domination, I don't think Mahrez is the type of a player who can fit. He is good in dribbling and long-balls on Vardy.
