Moving Target

Moving Target – Asmir Begovic

Bournemouth announced their first signing of the summer last Tuesday, with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic joining from Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million.

The 29-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term deal and will arrive at the Vitality Stadium on July 1.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Eddie Howe revealed how he believes Begovic’s quality and experience will prove invaluable over the next few years:

“Asmir is an outstanding goalkeeper who has proved himself capable of performing at the highest level over a number of years. He is at the right age and the right fit. He is a leader as well and exactly the kind of character you want in the team. Asmir will provide great competition to the excellent group of goalkeepers we already have here… I look forward to him being a very important player here for years to come.”

The History

Begovic’s big break came when playing for Southwest Sting Edmonton in Canada, where his family moved when he was aged just 10.

In 2003, the young goalkeeper earned a trial at Portsmouth and after two days was offered a contract, which he signed despite having another trial with Tottenham Hotspur already arranged.

After playing for the youth team, Begovic was then sent out on a series of loan spells to gain valuable first-team experience.

He spent time at Belgian top-flight side La Louviere in 2005/06, where he made two league appearances, before obtaining his UK visa in the summer of 2006, allowing the keeper to go out on loan to then League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

Begovic played three matches for The Silkmen before linking up with Bournemouth for the first time, where he made eight appearances with the club in League One.

He then enjoyed two separate loan spells at Yeovil Town, totalling 14 matches, before making his Premier League debut for Pompey in May 2009.

The 2009/10 season saw Begovic make six appearances during a loan spell with Championship side Ipswich Town, while he also played nine times for Portsmouth in the Premier League before moving to Stoke City for a fee of £3.25 million in February 2010.

It was with the Potters where Begovic established himself as a Premier League goalkeeper, making 173 appearances over five-and-a-half seasons, before moving to Chelsea in the summer of 2015 for a fee of £8 million.

But Begovic had to play second fiddle to first-choice stopper Thibaut Courtois. During his two-year spell in west London he only made 19 Premier League appearances, with the majority of those coming when the Belgian was unavailable due to both injury and suspension for the first half of the 2015/16 campaign.

The Prospects

Frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge, the move to Bournemouth should see Begovic become the first-choice goalkeeper at the Vitality Stadium.

Although Artur Boruc started 35 times in 2016/17, the new arrival’s pedigree and significant transfer fee indicates that he will grab the number one jersey.

Somewhat surprisingly, delving into the Opta data available from 2011/12 onwards, Begovic’s average of 31.2 minutes per save is only slightly superior to Boruc’s 35.2.

Yet the new boy’s FPL potential is highlighted by career-high scores of 144 points and 136 points in back-to-back seasons for Stoke City over 2012/13 and 2013/14.

Boruc’s top two hauls have been 125 points in 2013/14 and 120 points from last season, which included two penalty saves.

Bearing in mind that the Cherries conceded 67 times last year – the fifth-worst defence in the top-flight – there’s an argument that Begovic could start at 4.5 to offer a budget-friendly route into Howe’s backline.

Certainly, his arrival is expected to enhance the Fantasy prospects of the Bournemouth backline, with Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook and, potentially, Adam Smith perhaps all set to be priced at 5.0.

Daniels was the sixth highest scoring defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 134 points, with four goals and three assists making him the preferred option.

Yet the underlying stats show that Smith had the edge for both minutes per key pass (103.3 to 109.3) and shot (119.2 to 161.1).

Smith started last year at 4.5 to Daniels’ 5.0 and if we’re faced with the same scenario, then the former – who earned a goal and five assists – could prove a value option, should he find an end product.

But Cook could be the main beneficiary. Ranked first for clearances, blocks and interceptions in the Premier League last season, he collected more bonus points (17) than any defensive team-mate and produced more shots and efforts in the box than both Daniels and Smith.

Ultimately, Begovic’s price – relative to the rest of the Cherries’ rearguard – will be a key factor here. A cost of 4.5 could turn a few heads, though if he can improve upon last season’s total of 10 clean sheets, then the all-round potential on offer from his defensive team-mates may be more appealing.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic:

    English clubs were European Champions in 1968, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1999, 2005, 2008 and 2012.
We had 7 champions in the 8 seasons from 1977 to 1984, and 8 finalists in the 8 seasons from 2005 to 2012, but we’ve had no further finalists since then – what went wrong?

In 1977, 1984, 1999 and 2008 our European Champions were also English Champions.
How long will we have to wait before one of our clubs wins both the Premier League and the Champions League in the same season again?
Surely there’s enough money at some of the leading Premier League clubs to build squads capable of making a serious attempt at this double?
Is part of the secret to believe that it is possible instead of moaning about tiredness and fixture congestion?
Or are both competitions just too competitive for us these days?

-Our league is stronger overall so matches with lesser teams takes more out of players. Players can't be rested as much as they ought to be.

-PL are crap at helping teams in Europe fixt schedule wise.

Even the German clubs have stopped reaching the finals after 2013. I think it's just that the Spanish teams and Juventus are so good. And the number of matches played in England is insane.

There are a few reasons for this but the main reason is the amount of money in the premier league and the number of clubs with a huge financial clout. When Liverpool & Man Utd dominated it was purely down to the fact they had the biggest financial clout and could sign any other English clubs best players. 15 years ago if Harry Kane was about he would have been signed by United and there would've have been nothing Spurs could do. Also the new foreign owners with their billions means that no one team will ever dominate the league again like Liverpool & United did

Man City this season if they get Neymar, Mendy and Kyle Walker.

There is one thing about Real Madrid. The players are scared of doing anything against Zidane. Zidane is probably a crap manager, but noone at Madrid is going to do anything that goes against what he says. Fans will turn on the players first before they turn on Zidane. That is why Zidane can kick out James. It is why Real players defend properly. It is why he can get Bale to do long throws. Benitez or anyone else (except perhaps Raul) could not get the same effect.

English clubs are mostly struggling in Europe because the central lines are poor, and every team seems incapable of focusing their transfer strategy around these targets. In the late 90s and most of the 2000s English clubs were blessed with Terry, Ferdinand, Keane, Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard were brilliant players that made sure English teams would win the midfield battle over a decade.

It's no coincidence that Real Madrid struggled for years in the CL while their midfield consisted of Diarra and Gago. Barcelona struggled this year because their midfield was dire. English clubs will continue to struggle until they fix that problem.

Are Sky to blame? Too much easy money has softened countless players and managers. Arsenal for example have paid Wenger 100m in salary since he won the league. Madrid have been more ruthless, sacking a CL winning manager.

It'll be interesting to see how Chelsea get on next year, as this year they had it very easy with regards to injuries and fixture congestion. Could play practically the same XI every week. Same as Leicester last year of course, although it would be extremely daft to say no Champions League was the main reason for their title win 😛

The balancing act seems more difficult than ever, but I believe these things go in cycles. At the moment it's Spain's turn after we had the 2005-2012 years, and I reckon British teams will be back in the mix in finals too. The Prem and La Liga are miles ahead of every other league in terms of money and arguably player quality (even though the top 1 or 2 teams in Italy/Germany/perhaps France would beat our top couple).

I do think a Winter Break would be a good idea. The main argument is that it goes against the British tradition of fixtures almost every day between Christmas and New Year and how many games there are. So why not keep that, and have the break during the middle 3 weeks of January after the FA Cup weekend? It gives the managers (and I assume players) what they want while not sacrificing what the fans want. With the Champions League knockouts resuming in Feb, it would leave potential champions refreshed for a tilt on both fronts.

The quality of defending in the premier league has dropped in my opinion and too often centre halves are exposed by the midfield or attacking fullbacks which makes it harder to keep clean sheets.

I think Man City is probably closest to assembling a squad capable of winning the double. Unlikely imo 17-18 season as players need to get used to playing with each other, but it's definitely possible in 18-19.

I'm tempted not to care if English clubs win the Champions League. Mostly foreign owned, often a majority of players are not English, and TV money is far more important than traditional local fans attending the games for most.

That's not xenophobia or criticism really, just the state of the modern game means our top clubs are only loosely "English". At least when we fail at the Euros or World Cup it's a proper English side.

That said, if we want to give our clubs a better chance would we want to scrap the League Cup and have a break at winter, would that help players with being fresh when the last 16 starts.

When you look at the great English teams of the past, they were playing attacking football and were made of mostly home based players. The foreign takeover of the Premier League is a major factor in the decline of English clubs. Man. Utd. won the Champions League in 1999 and 2008. They had a core of British players and played an attacking game. Because many of the owners, managers and players of the top teams are not British, it has affected the English clubs. It seems that English clubs were doing better in Europe when the people running the clubs and the players were British.

If it's had its day, then why do clubs fight so hard to get into it?

There used to be a European Cup, a simple knock-out for which only the current league champions and European Champions would qualify.
Non-champions had to play in the Cup-winners Cup or UEFA Cup instead, and the latter was often a very strong competition.

But some of the biggest clubs threatened to break away and form a European Super League in which they could be guaranteed a place every year, so a compromise was reached in which the European Cup was replaced by the Champions League, the number of teams in it was expanded so that most of the biggest clubs could qualify for it every year, and the group stage was introduced.
This of course considerably weakened the UEFA Cup, which was replaced by the inferior Europa League, and the Cup-winners Cup was abandoned.

Try telling the big clubs and the TV companies that the Champions League has had its day - there's too much money involved.

Premier league clubs have become feeder clubs.
Instead of attracting the best players in the world they feed other with players on the verge of being recognized world wide as absolute top class.

If instead of letting go of CR7 and Bale the PL would have attracted the likes of Higuain, Auba and lets say Neymar things would have been different.

It is a bit strange that PL seem to attract the absolute cream when it comes to coaches but players.... not so much.
Hopefully this will change but I doubt it.

      1) Competition.
Premier League has become more competitive than dominant. If you contest a team that would finish somewhere 11 or 12 in Premier League will finish at least 6/7 in other top leagues. Even the relegation battling team would give the mid-table teams of other league a run for their money.
However, in German, Spanish, Italian leagues, there are just 2-3 dominant clubs. If a top player wants to play in the league, it will be between those top 2/3 clubs.
Example: Players like Sigurdsson, Negredo, Defoe are more than decent players. But, they battled relegation with their teams. They will fit in a top half club in other leagues.
In contrast, so called stars of Premier League like Costa, Firmino, Sterling who play for top clubs will surely not join another league's top club.

      2) Transfers
Big players like Suarez and Bale have been taken by other leagues to help them with European glory. Even the likes of Harry Kane,Coutinho, Sanchez would willingly join Madrid/Munich/Barca if the right offer comes.Had the stars stayed in Premier League, who knows, they would have had the chance of glory.

tl;dr - The clubs are stacked in almost same level in Premier League. This situation, however interesting, decreases the chance of European glory. And, big players are also moving out of the League when big offers come.

Obviously there are a whole bunch of reasons. Partly it's cyclical. Parm's link above raises some other very valid factors and Fred51 also makes good points. In addition it's a fact that PL income dwarfs what is available from the CL.

But there is also the question of mentality. Chelsea were the last and they have won the EL since then. Mourinho's United just won the EL as well and they did it the hard way. The EL is relevant because it's actually harder to win than the CL in terms of number of games, timing of games and distances to be travelled.

Those are 2 clubs with big European records and a winning mentality, they don't let themselves off the hook when the going gets tough. But other teams - especially Spurs and Arsenal - have been pathetic in Europe and can't wait to throw the towel in. Spurs have effectively thrown the EL 2 seasons in a row, in 2015/16 Pochettino said they didn't have a chance to beat Dortmund and played a weakened team only to see Liverpool knock Dortmund out later. Spurs are miles away from having the mentality of champions, they just play well when there's no pressure on them.

As for Arsenal, well, Wenger has been letting them off the hook for years. R16 CL is the big financial target (the prize money increments are relatively small after that) and R16 is therefore Arsenal's target, once they get there that's it.

Liverpool just don't have the squad depth yet but City are the interesting one. The owners and the manager will prioritise CL and they will have a much improved squad next season. I doubt Pep has the pragmatism to win the CL with a team like City but they should be talented enough to avoid embarrassment.

So that leaves Chelsea and United again. They, at least, can be relied on to compete properly.

The Spurs/Arsenal attitude thing is spot on. But I think Liverpool need a mention also - at least they made a decent fist of trying to win the EL when they were in it.

Agreed, their 2015/16 EL performance was admirable. They lack squad depth compared to the others, though, and they are improving that gradually rather than radically. You have to think they are 2 years away from being really competitive in the CL.

    Hi all,

I am running a WhatsApp group for FFS posters for FPL related chatter since last season. We are extending the number of posters this season - and are looking to add a limited number of participants. Ideally we're looking for FPL managers who have been around these parts from quite a while and are avid players of the game we love. The group has been a great success - some of us managed a highest ever FPL finish while others are prominent HOF members. Anyone interested in joining the group can feel free to hit me up on my email address.

          Can update league internally.

This is more about creating a space for all draft leagues here.

Then you can have articles about types of leagues, types of platforms, etc.

Also, you can have articles about is it time to drop certain players? Which players are worth picking up? Take into account different parameters of how many players are owned by managers in different types of leagues...

For example, if 150 players are owned between all managers, players available to claim are very different than in a league where 220 players are owned, etc.

        You weren't the only one.

        We go into year:
        52 managers returning
        8 new managers
48 managers having left in some fashion in the last 4 years

Looking into auction league option for the future. It's available now on Fantrax.

I think they just added it. Only will work for a draft where everyone is there at the same time. I'm pestering Fantrax to make a slow auction option.

One thing we added to our league last season that made things much better was using WhatsApp as the social platform for each division in the league. Good platform for banter.

Fantrax has an auction option. Going to try it out for a mock draft with some friends before our regular draft to see how feasible it is for league I run.

Comunio has an auction element to its format as I understand it (haven't used it but know someone passionate about it).

Remembering City's UCL semifinal loss to Real Madrid, we did nothing over two legs, probably took two shots on target over both.

But Real hardly did anything to us either, dominated possession but didn't grab a goal until a lucky deflection.

That City team was miles worse than the team we have now, but in fairness Madrid have improved a great deal as well.

If Pep makes the right signings in this window I don't think we're outside shouts for a good UCL run.

A great deal of the issue is the City mentality. We went into the game just hoping for draws. We try so hard to be a "big team" like Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern, Juve...but we haven't developed that mentality yet.

You need to invent a fake culture that you say has been your team history always. Your owners have pulled it off in they country (I lived there and my wife taught history there, not a jab), so they should be able to pull something together.

I'm a realist. We don't have the winning history of any of the current top six Premier League teams, but we're one of the best recent teams. Fans and players alike need to start believing they're as good as they are.

This City team nearly hit Barcelona for 6+ goals in group stage, absolutely dominated them. And even then, at 2-1 up and dominating the game, we (the fans) still felt we'd find a way to muck it up as chance after chance went begging. That game described so much. We're good enough, but we don't take advantage of our chances, and we don't believe we can.

It would be weird seeing City win the CL. You can have the best players in the world and still crumble. Sometime you need your fans and co to lift you through nail biting moments, still don't get that feeling with City.

If I'm being self-reflective...we're just such a negative fanbase haha "typical City" and all that...

I go into every UCL game borderline terrified. When we faced P$G and beat them it felt like an underdog victory. That mentality surely rubs off onto the players.

There's no way a team with the likes of Silva, De Bruyne, and Aguero shouldn't be at least attacking the Real Madrid defense. I've seen more valiant efforts from Schalke and Wolfsburg. People mock us and say we're not a "big club", but to be honest, we don't have the mentality for it yet...

A lot of City fans are still living in the past and haven't come to terms with our new found success. They still secretly yearn for games like our play off victory against Gillingham and the old yoyo nature of the club, relegated one season and back up the next

And that's the odd part of it, it's such a part of our DNA that we can't get rid of it.

I hate "typical City". But it still applies. Look at the Chelsea game. Look at the Spurs game. Look at the Monaco game. Look at the Arsenal game. It's so painful, yet so predictable.

Are you actually from City and grown up in the area? The club and it's identity is tied to the people's identity. Give someone who's scrapped away for 30 years in a 9-5 job, an undeserved promotion and a ton of money, and ask them to turn around the fortunes of a company. Ain't happening my friend. After the initial excitement and giddiness, you do then start hating the pressure because everyone is ready to laugh at you the moment they sense failure. Think you need to be a bit more understanding of the culture before expecting people to just flip a switch and go around walking with swag.

+1 I fully agree. And I think you've expressed it much better than I possibly could.

It's a team that's sticking to its roots, but you have to admit there's something tragic about that culture holding this team back.

When City won the title under the circumstances that it happened to be won by, it felt like that culture would finally go away. And even that couldn't kill it.

You can't deny your roots, I just hope that City as a team and as a fanbase come to terms with what they can achieve.

It's a weird one because if, and I know it's laughable, a billionaire took over at Carlisle, moved us to a characterless bowl of a ground and brought in loads of talented players it'd be great. But I would have mixed feelings. Brunton Park has been part of my life for a long time and we've always been happy to bounce between Leagues Two and One really. It'd lose something if the change happened too quickly.

Not a City fan myself but a former resident of the city. I've privately always felt the change was too quick and severe and the identity of the club was lost to extent, looking from the outside in. Feels like two different clubs.

My Dad, a lifelong City fan, shares these sentiments.

He'll still shout them on and be on edge (for example when Kun won the league for them against QPR he was very nervous) but he'd say he doesn't feel there's much of an identity in the club anymore. It's just a giant blank cheque.

I have no doubt that Messi is the greatest of all time. And many agree.

The tragic part of that is that C. Ronaldo is left out of the legends conversation purely because people just compare him to Messi.

Ronaldo (in my eyes) beats Pele and Maradona. He just doesn't beat Messi.

    3. Somalion
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I can probably understand it (United bias aside)

Ronaldo wasn't like Messi and isn't like him. When Messi was a kid you had Barcelona willing to pay for his medical treatments to help him grow just because he was so obviously talented.

Ronaldo by comparison did wind up in the Sporting Lisbon academy so obviously had talent, but didn't have the likes of Barcelona, Real or any of the world's massive teams beating down the door to sign him. I think Ronaldo twigged early on that to go very far he had to work harder than anyone and in fairness that's what he's done. He grafted, this isn't to say Messi didn't, but I'd often look at Ronaldo as the pinnacle of hard work.

Still, that's not good enough for many. No matter how good Ronaldo is, even if he has an objectively better season than Messi, it's still immediately dismissed as "Messi's still better." He wins the Balon D'Or, "Messi's still better." Messi wins the Balon D'Or, "If Ronaldo was better he'd have won the Balon D'Or this season." I do understand why he might have a bit of a chip on the shoulder.

Also, from a goal scoring per appearance perspective, Ronaldo is superior to Messi. Not mentioned much but Ronaldo has 406 goals in 394 for Real (more than a goal a game 😯 ), Messi has 510 in 585 games.

Not saying Ronaldo is better than Messi, but I kinda get why he has a bit of bitterness about it all.

But then you're doing a cross league comparison and comparing Ronaldo for two different teams to Messi for one which I wouldn't say is fair?

I'll fully take on Messi has been at Barcelona his whole career including the early days so I'll run the numbers post Ronaldo joining and see how they stack up.

            Since Ronaldo joined Real
            406 in 394 games = 1.03 goals per appearance
            Messi
            429 in 423 games = 1.01 goals per appearance.

            Ronaldo still better.

                Okay, assists:

                Messi 0.4 per game
                Ronaldo 0.31 per game.

                So Messi wins on assists.

But then we can also compare positions. Ronaldo has played CF in 66 matches for Real. Messi has played CF for 180 matches for Barcelona.

So then, really we should expect more goals from Messi, no? 😉

I think we're lying to ourselves if we say that the lineup on paper is how the players actually play.

Ronaldo started at LW yesterday, spent most of the game in the box. Messi drops as deep as CM sometimes.

And there's hardly a difference in the goal scoring. Maybe if Messi didn't give his penalties to everyone else... 😉

So glad I got to see him turn in to a world class player in United. He is and will continue to be one of the best in the history of football, but there is no denying that Messi is the best ever (in my opinion). As pointed out above, Ronaldo is the prime example of what hard work and dedication can give you. Messi is one in a generation player, the result of hard work AND special/extraordinary talent.

I'll won't be surprised if he forces Messi into an early retirement - Messi's been known to quit from stuff when the going gets tough... Ronaldo on the other hand just takes it up a notch (albeit crying in the process)

Didn't realise that the official transfer window doesn't open until the 1st July. Gives us hope that some transfers won't be completed as FPL should be open 2 weeks after and we could pick up a few bargains

VVD to a bigger club springs to mind. Should be 5.5 if he's a Soton player when FPL opens. Great bargain if he moves to a top club at that price, especially with his goal threat.

Zinedine Zidane can "stay at Real Madrid for life.. and by life I mean until we don't win the Champions League", says club president Florentino Perez after the Frenchman became the first manager to win the Champions League two years in a row with a dominant 4-1 win over Juventus.

Where does Zidane go from here. La Liga and CL this year. He's managed Ronaldo well. Dropped James for Casimero and Bale for Isco. Credit to him and their squad looks strong going into next season. Barcelona need a major reshuffle.

Take it with a bit of salt with everything Florentino says. Zizou just prolonged him his mandat so he will give him credit but a year or two without any titles and hes as good as gone.
