Team Of The Season – Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez failed to make our 2015/16 Team of the Season after registering 167 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

To say he roared back into Fantasy form would be something of an understatement.

A “kind” price tag of 11.0 seemed even more appetising when it transpired that the Chilean would be deployed as a lone striker. Ultimately, Sanchez emerged as an almost essential figure in our seasons, finishing top of the FPL standings with 264 points – a full 39 clear of his nearest challenger – Spurs’ Dele Alli.

Not surprisingly, the Arsenal midfielder walks into our Team of the Season for 2016/17, receiving 29% of the vote.

The Statistics

Despite having a shortened pre-season due to his participation in Chile’s successful defence of the Copa America, Sanchez started in the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in Gameweek 1, playing all 90 minutes.

He sat in less than 300,000 FPL squads at the outset, until a 16-point haul in the 3-1 win over Watford in Gameweek 3 sparked major investment in the former Barcelona attacker.

Further double-figure hauls followed against Hull City and Chelsea as his ownership rose to 823,436 ahead of Gameweek 7.

Braces against Sunderland and Bournemouth maintained Sanchez’s momentum before he produced one of the defining individual performances of the season in the 5-1 win over West Ham United in Gameweek 14.

Sanchez registered three goals and an assist in a masterful performance at the London Stadium, racking up 23 points in FPL.

A host of non-owners were quick to acquire his services as he rose in price from 11.4 to 11.7 by the time Gameweek 15 came around.

Despite ticking along with goals and assists, Sanchez would fail to reach those heights over the next few months, managing just two double-digit hauls in his next 20 appearances as Wenger’s side suffered a severe loss of form.

It was only during the last few weeks of the season when Sanchez would really live up to his premium price tag, averaging 11.75 points over his last four matches.

The 28-year-old ended the season with 24 goals and 11 assists in FPL – the first time he had reached double figures in both categories in his three years at the Emirates.

He also registered 32 bonus points – ranking him third among FPL midfielders behind Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who both totalled 33.

A contributing factor was perhaps his tally of six yellow cards – more than he had received over the course of the previous two campaigns.

The Prospects

Should Sanchez remain at Arsenal next term, there’s little doubt he will be among the most coveted players in FPL.

But with a year to run on his contract and plenty of speculation regarding his future in north London, it remains to be seen whether Sanchez will commit his long-term future to the club.

Having peaked at a cost of 11.9 in FPL, it looks inevitable that Sanchez will earn a price hike next time out, with a valuation of either 11.5 or perhaps even 12.0 possible.

At the halfway point of the season, it looked a foregone conclusion that the Chilean would be re-classified as a forward in next year’s game.

But after dropping back into an attacking midfield role following Wenger’s successful switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation, there’s a little more uncertainty now.

Sanchez was, through most of the second half of the campaign, the only viable option in the Arsenal attack as the likes of Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil saw their form fade and Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck shared playing time in the lone striker role.

A price hike for Sanchez could mean that other Gunners attackers offer value through parts of next season, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey, who both found form in the 3-4-2-1 towards the end of the campaign, possible mid-price differentials.

Despite a generally disappointing campaign, Ozil still ranked third among FPL midfielders for chances created, with 100, and produced 167 points – making it his second-best FPL season.

If the German remains at the Emirates, he may enjoy a revival depending on his price tag.

But having ended his best ever season in England with an outstanding performance and a goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final, it’s Sanchez who is set to continue as a Fantasy heavyweight next term.

He registered more shots from inside the box (79) than any other FPL midfielder in 2016/17, highlighting his unrivalled goal threat.

Price, FPL classification, his playing position and the form of cheaper Arsenal attackers could all be factors in how we view Sanchez in 2017/18, but his phenomenal output this season suggests he’ll remain one of the most sought-after premium assets.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Should Alexis Sanchez be reclassified as a forward next season?

Even when deployed on paper behind the striker he was often the furthest forward and for much of the season he was also used as a central striker.

Members are urged to look at his heat map compared to Giroud's using the Comparison Tool - his is certainly not the position of a midfielder.

Sky and Fanduel are among those who already classify Sanchez as a forward. Is it time for FPL to follow their lead?

Average position doesn't matter, a lot of teams have players who almost operate as second strikers. Alli often, Walcott, Mane etc.

No, he plays out on the wing far too much. I think classifying him as a striker would open a huge can of worms. Josh King on the other hand should be repositioned.

And King, Alli, Mané, Firmino, Walcott, Redmond, Jay Rod (well that's obvious), etc.

Yeah, definitely more difficult striker choice, but choosing from abundance would be more interesting challenge than choosing from the scarcity we had for this year outside the most expensive choices.

I think someone should only be reclassified if they clearly become first choice in that position when everyone is fit. There is more of a case for Firmino and King that for Alexis. If you move Sanchez, what about Sigurdsson, Hazard, any player who gets a few games up front and generally plays higher up the pitch?

I´d say no. If a player is genuinely capable of playing two FPL positions, he should be classified in the more favourable one. Having a midfielder who may play OOP is great fun. Having a striker play POO is not. So Sanchez should be mid, Milner def, etc.

To have players listed for their correct position.

Obviously, it would mean dropping the prices.

I think FPL should really look at this, since the teams seldom play with 2-3 out and out forwards now, and the CF may drop deeper while the support strikers and wing forwards play higher and occasionally play CF too. So, maybe it's the time to list that type of players as forwards.

It would obviously reduce the number of expensive midfielders, but it would also give us more budget friendly forward choices.

Not for me. As Mark said on a recent podcast, you want to make a player as attractive as possible to own and classifying Alexis as a midfielder does that. Exact same with Marcos Alonso- keep him as a defender but up the price a little

Arsenal's own web site lists Sanchez as a forward. (Walcott too.) As a general rule, I think FPL's classifications should be the same as the clubs' at the beginning of the season, regardless of his actual field position in any particular game or games. I love the extra points for goals if Sanchez remains a midfielder, but it's not right.

who on earth said he would be benched? this is not you average teenage prodigy.. also what would he learn from Wenger at this point in time while playing in an inferior european competition?

you need to remember that Ronaldo has been rested by Zidane for all away games for over two months, and it will happen again next season as its the only way now to get the best out of him. Mbappe will play

I think the key point is that Mbappe now has to choose who he will play for, Monaco has made that clear. He is 18 years old. He has had a great season at Monaco, but going to RM is a massive step up, where he will be competing with the likes of Ronaldo and Benzema. The pressure is immense. On the other hand he could go to Arsenal, were he will be the main central striker competing with Giroud and Welbeck, under the guidance of Wenger. It all comes down to what the lad wants. It isn't just about ambition and money and the immediate competitions that will be made available to him. It is also about how he wants to complete his development.

And i still maintain his development will come at the best team in the world right now, who play in the best competition and who now have a manger willing to rest their main striker for large parts of the season (and who in turn is willing to accept that, something that would never ever happened under Ancellotti, rafa or pellegrinni)

That's like an argument for not leaving Leicester after they won the league. Look at the bigger picture. Monaco losing half their team, probably won't have the season they had again. Arsenal get CL every year except this one, they'll be looking to get back into it. It is a step up for sure.

How is losing one guy half the team? That was already replaced with an even bigger prospect in Youri.

They also look the worse in the top 6 in England and have a coach thats past his date. Absolutely no reason to go there this season with the lack of big stage football. Might as well develop in France.

If they get to CL next year (which I doubt), then its worth another look, but going to them this year would be a step back.

this hype of the prem league has to stop. It needs to become about European competition again ie getting english teams to semi finals minimum

Absolutely, the Champions league is the best place to play, but would Zidane guarantee Mbappe a place in the CL semi final over Ronaldo/Benzema? How will he develop if he is only a bit part player? These are the questions he needs to resolve, and only him, and the two clubs know what exactly he is being offered.

if you listen to the reports coming out of madrid you will hear Zidane is a different manager than others before him. he was a world class player himself and a hero at madrid and has the respect of the players. he is willing to make tough choices and drop big names like james, morata and Bale and doesnt cow to perez's demands( and as ive said he will not play ronaldo for away games in la liga in latter parts of season) If mpabbe shows his talents early ZZ will have no hesitation throwing him in at the deep end in the league which could then lead to starts in CL if he kicks on, even replacing Benzema with him. any other manager and I would hesitate sending any young player there but Zidane has changed things. that for me is a better environment to develop in than at Arsenal

sorry thats rubbish, im looking at Wengers track record over the last 5 years, he may become a great player, i will grant you that, but Wenger has two years to win a major competition and this just doesn't seem like the right kind of signing to me.

Kolasinac on a free allows for more investment on other areas. If that doesn't happen though, then yes, Mendy would have been a bit better.

Well, tell me what is wrong, don't just post more rubbish. Many clubs were after him and Juve would have gone for him if they didn't have Sandro. If this the biggest signing from Arsene then yes nothing has changed, but it doesn't make this signing a bad one.

We haven't signed VVD. He said a week ago that is was a done deal when it clearly wasn't. When he realised his guess was wrong he then deleted the tweet. Now he's been quoting prices on Twitter as if we've agreed a fee? Doesn't look like it from where I'm sitting. This guy is a fraud and I can't believe you're falling for it hook, line and sinker. You've just said below that he's only right some of the time!!!

That's funny. It's as if he's making educated guesses and isn't ITK at all.

Reports on BBC Sport saying united are interested in Morata. Also that as soon as they make contact naturally Madrid will bring up DDG. Tough. Keeping DDG would be amazing. Sign Lukaku instead!

Its painful to see him like that, yeah. Hes a Madridista from his youth years but its just not working. The system isnt meant for him and he is too good for the bench, yet does not give the team enough as a 1st teamer.

Former if they play a back 4, latter in a back 3. Of course one of them could be left out if they play a back 3 with 3 other CBs in the back 3 and the other as LWB. Wait and see what the story is would be my advice.

Monreal LCB, Kolašinac LWB. Monreal's always been a very reliable defender and should stay part of that back 3, while Kolašinac is more of a strong defender, also realiable in the back, but much better in the attacking areas so should take the LWB position.

Before the start of last season, I took my kids login (he'd lost interest) and entered a dead team with 15 "differentials". Players such as Ibe, Adomah, Feghouli.... it tanked horribly!

I'll play one or two differentials max, the rest will all be proven PL mainstays with no new competition for their positions.

I started without Zlatan last season - it was a mistake.
Michu was another new foreign signing who hit the ground running.

A few promoted players are often needed to act as enablers since the established players tend to be a bit too expensive for these purposes, and they can also be useful in rotations.

Last season Tom Heaton was both a promoted player and a known quantity. I didn't own him, but that was another big mistake on my part.

Great. Rules out Newcastle strikers. Gale, Abraham, mitrovic, one up top.

Perez number 10 but can play there too sometimes. Mitrovic seems to be surplus.

Disagree BLB. Mitrovic couldn't get minutes in the championship. Soon as Gayle gets his first injury, it's Tammy all the way. 26 goals with almost no service. Rising star.

He can't intend to rotate that much can he? Must be looking at playing two up top as an option!

I agree - he'll ring in the changes as soon as they start struggling, which is likely to be quite quickly.

Hmmm maybe utilise Gayles pace out wide? I am just finding it difficult to understand why Chelsea would want him to go with that much risk of rotation. Surely they want him playing as much as possible.

Can see Pedro being in a lot of GW1 teams with Hazard missing the start of the season.

    Hello all,

What are the chances of Milner being reclassified as an LFC defender? Realized that had he been a def all of last season, he would have been No.1 ahead of Cahill. Would be tempting if he is nailed and on pens again.

    1. UnitedFan
      • 8 Years

Very likely to be a defender. The problem is nailed-ness though. Wait and see is all we can do.

I would be very surprised if he isn't, after playing as a defender all season.

According to my calculations, he would have got 174 last season if he had been classified as a defender and his bonus points had remained the same.
That's just 4 points short of Cahill, but it wouldn't have taken many additional bonus points to have put him ahead.
He would have got an extra 12 BPS for each clean sheet, but 6 fewer BPS for each goal scored.
He scored 7 goals and had 12 clean sheets - not sure exactly how much this would have affected his bonus points.

If Klopp hasn't bought a left back and FPL reclassifies him as a defender then expect a big price:- 6.0 or even 6.5

Would be good for England to let Rashford develop with plenty of game time in Champions league. I dont think Jose will want to go into next season without a star buy upfront though. He doesnt seem to rate Martial as a forward

Hazard 😉 3-5-2 so 3 in the middle. Would possibly play kante and Matic/Fabregas behind Hazard in the hole, so Pedro benched? Im only speculating

      Not many options out there.
Don't rate Morata highly though so hopefully not him.
In fact I hope we sign Lukaku even though I'm not that excited about him either.
Another option is to stick. Use Martial. Then Zlatan when he is back.

        Fully agree.
Not a fan of Morata, seems like a jack of all trades, master of none. Hes not a target man, or runs the channels or a poacher

I'm not convinced on Lukuku, mainly because he is inconsistent, utd need a striker who can bury the one or two chances he gets.

If I was utd I'd break the bank for Kane, madness that the are rumored to be willing to pay mad money for the monaco lad Marappe but not proven quality like Kane
