The Community Round-Up

Transfer rumours and early scouting of the promoted sides were among the pre-season preparations underway this week.

As we published our in-depth analysis of the three new Premier League arrivals, our Hot Topic posters offered their own expert guidance on picking the top assets from those sides who have moved up from the Championship.

Elsewhere, the community’s scribes have been looking at Fantasy action taking place in Europe, while offering a post-mortem on the methods used to select a captain of the 2016/17 season, with a nod to the next campaign.

There’s further statistical analysis in our Members table round-up, which focuses on the underlying numbers behind the performances of 2016/17’s key assets, while we also discover that there is still competitive mini-league action taking place over the summer.

The Community Articles

Our community’s insatiable desire for Fantasy Football during the summer months is being met via the windswept chilly stadia of Norway, as Fantasy Eliteserien continues to gather interest during June.

Niemi delivered his latest update from the top flight of Norwegian football, including a stock check of the players to draft in and those to sell on. This impressive series has earned him a £20 Amazon voucher after being voted the top community writer of the month for May.

Elsewhere, YMA still has some unfinished business with the Fantasy Premier League 2016/17 season and he dropped by with a look at how his fixture and form analysis fared in predicting the best captain each week.

Meanwhile, Red Lightning has been taking a historical look at the prospects of the three promoted sides next season.

The Hottest Topics

Virgil Van Dijk’s potential move from Southampton to Liverpool generated plenty of interest earlier this week, with FPL Virgin among those questioning whether the Dutch defender is worth his reported £50m+ price tag.

By the end of the week, any points were rendered somewhat moot when the Reds sheepishly announced they would no longer be pursuing the centre-back.

It remains to be seen if another side can match the Saints’ valuation, or whether Van Dijk remains on the south coast as their key Fantasy temptation.

Kuntheman – Silva hopes his side, Manchester City, are not among the suitors as he believes they are already well equipped in the heart of defence to prevail next season.

Liverpool are also reported to be interested in Roma winger Mohamed Salah, although according to local media on Merseyside they may be priced out of the move. Should a deal be brokered, Parm believes he could be a strong addition to the Reds squad.

Pre-season planning also took in whether Arsenal’s top scorer in 2016/17, Alexis Sanchez, should be reclassified from a midfielder to a forward. Billy Gilmore thinks the Chilean should, based on his goalscoring exploits last season, while Baines on Toast is among those who are happy to keep the status quo.

The Gunners’ north London rivals Spurs were also in our community’s thoughts this week as they considered how best to tackle the inevitable price hikes for three of their 2016/17 stars, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

There was further chat during the week around whether such price rises may lead to FPL veterans ditching a tried and tested budget spread at the start of next season.

Another consideration when investing in Spurs assets is how they will cope with the demands of competing for the Premier League title alongside a Champions League campaign.

Mark asked how European involvement might have an impact on teams next season, in particular regarding rotation. Red Lightning added to the debate with a look at how English clubs have fared at the top European level in recent years.

Thoughts of chasing the title or a European place are unlikely to be top priorities for newly promoted Brighton, Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United, who will surely be happy enough to finish 2017/18 still in the top flight.

As the trio prepare for the Premier League, we asked for your top tips on getting the most out of promoted players, particularly in the early stages of the season.

Tapping into the save point potential of a cheap goalkeeper is among the top advice on offer. But for all three sides, that position is very much up for grabs, with Brighton linked with Australian stopper Mat Ryan and Huddersfield in search of a new custodian. In addition, the recipient of the number one jersey at Newcastle is still uncertain according to Magpie supporter The Tinman’s assessment of his side’s key assets.

Finally, our interview with FPL winner and Everton fan Ben Crabtree revealed that he took the crown in spite of his strict ban on Liverpool players. This prompted us to find out how club affiliations have affected our Fantasy management.

To view all our discussions, please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.

The Members Tables

Among the newly introduced features in the Members area is the ability to filter home and away statistics to take into account more recent performances.

My table looking at the most shot-happy players over their last four road trips is an example of the sort of data now available.

With Spurs playing their home games at Wembley next season, Spencer has taken a detailed look at their players’ home and away form.

Those looking at investing in Manchester City forwards next season are advised to glance at my table on the frequency of penalty area attempts. There is further insight into last season’s sharp shooting stars in Greenwindmill’s latest table.

Meanwhile, FPL Virgin has constructed a series of tables looking at the best assets by position, covering goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why Fantasy managers need better Manchester United assets.

In my decade or so of playing Fantasy Premier League some of the best Fantasy players have been among the ranks of Manchester United.

In my first season having Ronaldo for the captaincy, Rooney on board and Vidic at the heart of defence provided an incredible source of points. Later Valencia in midfield and Nani were strong options and Rooney continued to offer strong points returns. There was also the super differential Berbatov who could be capable of huge scores.

But that was then and this is now. For the last few seasons a lack of options among the Red Devils has, I think, harmed the game. Yes there have been other options from others sides, but with United’s strong pedigree of attacking play and solid home form it has been to the detriment of FPL to have to swerve their assets.

Last year was among the worst Fantasy seasons ever for United.

De Gea was only third among goalkeepers and poor value compared to top placed Heaton

There were 15 better FPL defenders in terms of points than Man Utd’s best rearguard asset Valencia

In midfield you have to travel to the second page of the total points search to find their top midfielder, Paul Pogba. There were an incredible 32 better midfielders than the Frenchman.

And in attack Ibrahimovic proved patchy, prone to long goal droughts and missed chances. He lies in just sixth in terms of total points – a poor placement for a player with his price tag.

But I for one, hope that changes next season….and according to transfer speculation that change may be about to occur. Ibrahimovic will not return – that’s a plus for Fantasy managers and with Belotti or Morata, or both rumoured to be joining we may at last have a strong forward option – who hopefully will be kindly priced below the 10m mark.

It looks like the mess of United’s defence will be broken up too and hopefully it can provide one or two strong, nailed on options.

For this thread I want to avoid tribalism. It is perhaps inevitable, but for me this is about Fantasy management not club loyalties. Giving the Fantasy game some strong options from a side that used to be the home of FPL strength is important I think.

    Questions:

Does it really matter that ManU have become such a poor source FPL points, with others more than willing to fill the void among the ranks of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and City?

What would you like to see Mourinho do over the summer and next season to make Man Utd better for Fantasy managers?

Which of their rumoured transfer targets appeal?

Which of last year’s underperformers do you think will step up this season?

But man u assets always have high ownership going into the season due to their whopping fanbase. When they fail it gives everyone else a help who plays the game without just selecting players from the team they support.

If they get a settled defence then I'll be tempted to get a defender. Their midfield and attack is too inconsistent from a FPL point of view for me when there are better options from other teams in the same price bracket.

Mourhino is the problem they are so unappealing. His negative tactics will need to change for United players to become viable FPL options also there are many other better options around in FPL who are better value for money. United players are overpriced in FPL given they have only finished 6th in the last 2 seasons.

I hope FPL listens to that point about over pricing - its key.

They can tend to look at the actual transfer fee rather than anything else with ManU play. Ibra and their mids were overpriced last season.

In the case of Pogba, Mhki and Zlatan they only had price and reputation to go on, I think last seasons returns will be a bigger factor this time

What Syd said! Under Mou, Utd defenders are much more appealing to me.

Yes it irks me that United players have meh fpl output. It is nice to have at least one United player in the team as a fan

I gave up following United transfer rumors after Vidal broke my hearth and went to Bayern a few years ago we will see what we have after the window closes but i wont have any of them in my team until i see how they settle in and that is the same for all teams

I fancy Myki and Pogba to do better in the coming season

Manchester United need a good midfielder and a forward who can produce consistent points. No Europa league this year should reduce the rotation I think.
Their defensive assets look good for the upcoming season.
Of all the players that are being linked, I like the look of Morata. I also think Henrik Mkhitaryan will step up and produce more returns next season.

Think we will see a more settled team this season.
I believe it's safe to go with a defender, as the team looked good defensively last season.
When it comes to attacking players, the price has to be right and the team must show that they can score more goals. I'm backing Mkhi to have a good season and hopefully Martial can show more consistency. Mata is FPL gold, but the lack of minutes makes it hard to pick him.

The team need a good midfielder and a goalscorer. Potentially a new LB too.

Valenica is the guy most likely to get attacking returns as of right now. Problem is he might be priced a little higher than the other. Still think he could be a pick and forget kind of player, that will deliver throughout the season.

United doesn't have a goalscoring centerback that starts regulary, so would might invest in the fullbacks

I'd pay any money for Valencia if he's nailed! He finished as captain didn't he? The problem comes with champions league rotation though

Thats the thing. Hopefully Mourinho does as he did in Chelsea and rotate as little as possible in the league. If that's the case Valencia will probably be one of the highest scoring defenders next season, and a safe bet in terms of clean sheets. Even this season United manages 17 clean sheets, joint best with Spurs

Depends on the signings really. Valencia and Bailly are the only two we know will start most of the games. Blind is a bps magnet, but prone to rotation.

Will Valencia start most of the games though? Mourinho seemed to think he didn't have 2 games per week in him, but then maybe premiership is the priority next season?

I think we have to accept that Mourinho has become very conservative with his players playing time. He made some strange decisions last season that seemed to indicate he was becoming almost obsessed with rotation.

Over the top might sum it up better...

              In PL and CL, yes.
Tired? Have a look at his games last season. Despite being named a machine, every single player would be tired after the number of games he played from December until May. Don't forget that he is captain for Ecuador and has featured in pretty much every game they have played.

I'm not questioning or criticising Valencia. He's a quality player, and if he's nailed, he's in my team irrespective of price. I'm just concerned mourinho will limit his minutes in PL, but if you say he won't, that makes me very happy.

I think United, if Mourinho gets what he wants in the window, will cause some more confusion by adding more good options to the already ample pool from Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Pool and City.

Think back to when Chelsea won the league under Mou in 14/15, they could really attack. Hazard accrued 233 points (his highest ever total) with 14 goals and 10 assists. Fabregas whacked out 3 goals and 19 assists. Costa scored 20 goals with 3 assists. When he has the players he's happy with, Mourinho sides can have a great output.

From an asset perspective, I think we all saw United's starting forward in Ibra offered good returns. Big issue for me was the midfield. Mkhitaryan has to kick on if he's going to make it at United, he needs more goals as do all the midfielders (Pogba missed a few sitters). On the subject of Pogba, if his team mates were to finish better, including Ibra who was prolifically wasteful, his assist numbers should have bloomed. He created so many wasted chances. Another CM alongside himself and Herrera if the 3 in midfield are used then that might free him up more. I would certainly hope for bigger things for him next season. LW is an issue as it's so unsettled. Don't want Perisic at the value Inter have put on him, but he's very much a Mourinho winger. Martial, if given the time, could establish himself but I fear he isn't Mou's cup of tea.

Morata heavily linked at the moment. Never been a massive fan, in fairness to him though he's never played the amount of minutes in a season that he would at United. Also, 15 La Liga goals in 1330 minutes or so was very good going last season, tbh better than I had expected from him. Another CB (Lindelof the favourite) could further shore up the defence as well.

They managed it last season. If they go 4-3-3 then any of Mata, Lingard, Martial, Rashford, Young and Mkhitaryan could be used in the two wide positions.

Alternatively they could go with wingbacks, play a midfield diamond of

              ----------------Herrera/NewDM

              Herrera/NewCM----------Pogba

              -----------------------Mata

and play two strikers. I want Mkhitaryan to succeed, more than anything because I think right wing is an area that isn't particularly strong in the PL and he could establish himself as a top PL player if he kicks on. But he really wasn't good enough last season imo.

Manchester United were one of the most wasteful teams in front of goal. So many chances missed.

So many nearly goals which of course have so many nearly assists. Thier underlying stats indicate they are a sleeping giant as far as potential FPL points are concerned.

I'd only really consider a defender out of the blocks. Valencia would have been considered a decent pick if not for the in-and-out run home. Fantasy aside, Bailly was an absolute machine, one of the better signings they have made recently.

If Belotti/Morata are priced under 10m they will be straight in my team, Ibra missed quite a few big chances last season in games they should have won - I'd be hoping they could stick those chances away. Mkhi could step up, Shaw would be good if he comes in at 5.0 and gets a run in the team.

Their players were overpriced last year as you've touched on.

Pogba 8.5 or Coutinho for 8.0..
Miki, Martial at 9.5 or Alli at 8.5

But strange given they were coming off the back of a poor season under LvG.

FPL probably expected United to really grow under Mourinho, as most people thought. This year I think some of the players might be more reasonably priced. Pogba should go down, together with Martial and Mkhtaryan.

I for one think Pogba can be great value kext season, if his teammates stop wasting the chances he creates for them. Mkhtaryan has a history of improving immensly in his second season at a new club, so will monitor him

Many people here say that Mou is the problem. This season was my first in fpl so I wanted to ask: how good was Chelsea attacking assets fpl-wise under Mou when they won the title?

Maybe if united could assemble a squad that can charge for the tile, Mourinhos style wouldnt conpletely destroy their attacking potential?

      For me, it's this simple

If I want a premium defender costing 6.0 or more, I'll go for a wingback that plays in a 3 at the back that turns to 5 when defending

If I want a premium attacker in the same price bracket, I'll go for Spurs, Chelsea, City and Liverpool attackers - teams that play attacking football and score goals

Very difficult to avoid tribalism as a Leeds fan.

I don't think it matters one jot if a certain team is a poor option for points. You just avoid them.

A quick look at Jose's career shows that he often tends to peak in his second season in charge. Bearing this in mind, plus summer business, and it is logical to believe that United will improve in 2017/18. They also won't have the draining (but ultimately worthwhile) distraction of the Europa League. Opening fixtures may well dictate, but I would imagine having some initial Old Trafford coverage is no bad thing.

GK/Defence - not interested in either DDG or Romero (better value elsewhere), but there are a number of options at the back who could be worth a punt. Valencia has become a first-class RB (with plenty of assist potential), albeit he may well be priced £0.5M more than other members of the back four. Bailly had a very solid first season. And the addition of Lindelof (who sounds like a young Rio Ferdinand) could help further. Blind may get shunted out to LB - a BPS magnet taking the occasional set-piece. No bad thing.

Midfield - the only one I would look at from the outset is Pogba. He had a decent first season back (but no more than that) and I would expect him to kick on next year. There's every chance that his £89.2M world record fee is broken this summer so, in that sense, any mental burden will be relieved. He also hit the woodwork more often than many PL teams did combined and is unlikely to be as unlucky again.

Attack - everything points towards Morata being the spearhead. His goals-per-game ratio in Spain is pretty impressive with him sitting between Ronaldo and Messi for 2016/17 La Liga stats. Depends on his price and United's opening fixtures, but he could be worth a punt.

No doubt that there has been a lack of United FPL fun in recent years (in truth since RVP under Fergie's final season in charge). Investing in the Defence, at the very least, seems like a solid base from which to assess other options. TM32

Man. Utd. have not been the same since Ferguson retired. They were a great attacking team, but they don't seem to have maintained that tradition recently. That is part of the problem when you bring in a manager who imposes his own philosophy on the club and doesn't seem to appreciate the history and tradition of the club. It is also a shame when you look at some of the players who have moved to United in the last few seasons. Players who were very good at other clubs, such as Di Maria, have not done so well at United. Man. Utd. are not playing like Man. Utd. Therein lies the problem.

One of the biggest factors Fergie had in his favour when in charge was United had no real competition in the transfer market, they could sign the best players and dominate that has now changed and they are no longer the most attractive club to sign for.

They didn't dominate the transfer market, especially during the last few years before he retired. In fact, they hardly spent anything considered they got a lot from Ronaldo's sale. What makes him so great is his ability to make player who are 5/10 play like 8/10. And he knows what it takes to get 3 points without playing well.

    Is Heaton worth £5.0m?

He's the only player Mark labelled as "essential" last season.

Or does it depend on if Butland is £4.5m?

No 2 seasons are the same.

I doubt it will be Heaton or Butland who end up being the go to GK.

Look back through the seasons, i doubt the best GK has been the same 2 years running or at all in fact

Actually, if you look, Heaton has been in the Premier League twice and got the same score both times (150 in 2014/5 and 149 this season). It means he is consistent and that even if Burnley go down (as they did in 2014/5) he will guarantee you 150 points, which will either be first or second among all goalkeepers.

I think probably 5.0 for three reasons:

            1. He started off at 4.5 this season and 1.0 is a big jump for a goalie.
            2. The fact that he started off in 2016/7 at 4.5 when they knew that in the 2014/5 FPL he was the best goalie doesn't mean that him being the best goalie now should make any major difference to his price next season.
            3. 5.5 is usually reserved for goalies of teams in the top 6

Sané still feels like first team even if Sanchez comes in aswell, meaning sterling (who suffered at the end of the season while city played very well I might add) really will struggle in my eyes. If Wenger lets him go after bloody signing a new contract, promising a fight for the league title, and categorically saying Sanchez and Ozil won't leave, then that man is so full of sheet and someone who will stoop to any level to remain employed. Morata needs a full season of minutes before I would feel okay judging him properly.

From a PL perspective, currently it has to be Lukaku. We know he can do it in the Prem. Have to see if Morata can should the move come through.

I agree from the sense of the PL being perceived as more tough when it isn't.

But lots of other adapting is needed. New home, new city, new language. Some players do struggle with this. Di Maria one that comes to mind immediately. He could manage the PL no problem, but he hated life in England. Moving from one of the higher leagues like La Liga or Bundesliga shouldn't prove a step up in difficulty for good players, even Ligue 1 players have flourished in the PL.

Just ran some stats on Kachunga because he's starting to interest me. The results are very encouraging - if he's classified as a midfielder.

He scored 0.26 goals per game last season and chipped in with a couple of assists. Assuming a lower rate in the Prem of 0.20 goals per game (so only 1 goal in 5 games) plus the same two assists, together with a conservative estimate of bonus points and a few clean sheets, he'd get around the 146 mark (so better than Barkley, just short of Sterling - both of whom cost £7.0m+).

However, if he's a striker, the same performance would likely see him lose some BPS, a few clean sheet points as well as the extra point per goal so he'd likely finish on around 130 points (the same as Negredo).

We need a top defensive midfielder IMO - don't know if Livermore is it. Our best team is 3 at the back I think, because we don't have the quality of CB that we used to (e.g. Sol Campbell, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand) and our full-backs are poor defensively, but have pace.

      Hart
      Dier - Stones - Cahill
      Walker - Henderson - ????? - Rose
      Alli - Lallana
      Kane
