Team Of The Season – Harry Kane

He might have picked up the Golden Boot award in 2015/16, scoring 25 goals, but Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane did not begin the season as a popular Fantasy option.

Kane entered the campaign following a fruitless Euro 2016 with England, as he struggled to shake off his reputation for starting seasons slowly. The arrival of big-name forwards – particularly Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic – dealt a further blow to Kane’s early Fantasy stock.

But despite an injury-disrupted start, he soon found momentum, particularly during the second half of the season, embarking on an extraordinary run of goal scoring to eventually snatch a second successive Golden Boot gong.

Kane finished as the highest scoring forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with 224 points from just 30 appearances, and gains selection in our Team of the Season for a third successive season.

The Statistics

Handed a price tag of 11.0 in FPL, Kane was selected by 618,838 managers heading into Gameweek 1, with Ibrahimovic and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero proving far more popular options, with over 1.2 million owners apiece.

He mustered just a single assist over the first three Gameweeks before opening his account in the 4-0 win over Stoke City.

He scored nine points the following week, via a goal and maximum bonus points, but picked up an ankle injury which kept the striker out of the next five outings.

By the time he returned in Gameweek 11, Kane’s price in FPL had dropped to 10.7 with his ownership standing at just 203,826 managers.

But a goal in the north London derby against Arsenal proved to be something of a catalyst and his first double-digit score followed in the 3-2 win over West Ham United in Gameweek 12.

That 13-point haul was followed by another in the 5-0 victory against Swansea City in Gameweek 14, while further big double-figure scores came in emphatic victories over Watford and West Bromwich Albion.

It was during this stage of the season that Kane’s home form would prove irresistible, with a 20-point haul against Stoke City followed by another 13 points in a 3-2 win over Everton a week later.

Another ankle injury saw him sit out a further three matches, but on his return to the starting XI, he plundered 12 points in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth.

And his sensational performances over the final two Gameweeks, which included two hat-tricks and eight goals and an assist in total, helped secure a second consecutive Golden Boot.

Kane ended the campaign averaging a chance every 23 minutes, which only put him fifth among forwards who made a minimum of 20 appearances, but he did register more shots on target (58) than any other FPL forward.

He finished the season with 29 goals – his best return, while he produced seven assists, equaling his tally from 2014/15.

In terms of points per match, Kane led all FPL forwards with 7.5 – far superior to Ibrahimovic (5.8), Aguero (5.6) and Chelsea’s Diego Costa (5.6), and he also racked up 33 bonus points, with no player registering more in the game.

Kane’s standing as one of the most reliable captain options is illustrated by the fact only Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez made the FPL Dream Team as many times (nine) as the Spurs forward.

He ended the campaign at a season-high price of 11.9, while his FPL ownership peaked at 1,048,445 in the final Gameweek.

The Prospects

Three outstanding seasons means that Kane looks set to rival, and likely supersede, Aguero as the most expensive player in the game next time out.

The City forward set us back 13.0 at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, but could see his price fall slightly after only accruing 175 points, while the emergence of Gabriel Jesus is also expected to be a factor.

It appears likely that Kane will warrant a rise to at least 12.0 next term and he could well be the most expensive player across all the Fantasy games.

However, following his outstanding form at the end of 2016/17, Kane’s popularity will surely be unshakable with Spurs’ initial fixtures perhaps the only factor that could calm the initial rush.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side built on their title challenge of 2015/16, when they eventually came third with 70 points, to go one better and claim runners-up spot last season.

Spurs accrued a hugely impressive 86 points and also netted 86 goals, making them the highest scorers in the league.

Kane, ably supported by Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min, was part of an attack which just could not be contained.

With all four players improving year on year, there’s every expectation the Spurs attack will remain among the most potent in the top flight next season.

One potential issue could be the club’s move to Wembley, given that White Hart Lane proved such a fortress in 2016/17.

They won 17 and drew two of their 19 home fixtures, scoring 47 goals. At Wembley, they only managed to win one of their five matches.

But with Kane enjoying a first summer off since 2014, he should be well rested and offer an option that will likely prove irresistible to Fantasy managers, particularly if he can show convincing pre-season form.

While Aguero has been the trusted captaincy option for Fantasy managers in recent seasons, the baton looks set to be handed on to Kane in 2017/18, offering an unrivalled consistency and ability to provide big points hauls.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Kane and next season's 3-5-2 conundrum

When I was writing an analysis of the Hall of Fame top ten recently a key theme emerged – they, in the main, used 3-4-3 the most but were willing to shift quickly to 3-5-2 when needed. Often 3-5-2 was more successful too when utilised.

Key factors in shifting to 3-5-2 at times were an increasing number of midfielders taking more attacking roles and a real lack of strong third striker options, with only Defoe, Austin and Llorente providing strong returns – and then only for limited periods.

With Kane expected to be priced somewhere between 12 and 13m….probably the latter and other strong forward options like Lukaku, Aguero and Jesus likely to cost at least 10m should we be much more willing to opt for 3-5-2 next season.

Surely affording Kane and one of Aguero/Jesus/Lukaku will require a cheap third striker?

Or, as with price hikes in the past for the likes of RVP and Aguero – will Kane actually be worth 13m?

I think Kane will be worth the hike if he is priced above 12. I am looking at 3-4-3 also because unlike last season there are not that many teams which don't have a proper striker.
I'm looking at the likes of Berahino, Gayle, Benteke, Deeney etc. to solve this problem.

I'm not sure Berahino, Gayle, Benteke, Deeney are the solution to any problem - other than the need to find a striker that will disappoint. 😉

They are prime examples of the lack of quality in that price range last season.

The three new teams won't help either. Brighton have Murray - need a new striker, Newcastle will rotate strikers and Gayle is rarely fit...meanwhile Huddersfield don't do goals...and don't really have a strong striker at the moment.

I think Marco Silva would get the best out of Deeney unlike Alec Baldwin. Surely monitoring him. And Benteke's fate would depend on Palace's new manager. Berahino because he has played for sometime regularly. Last season he was not match fit before he started off in January.

Silva joining has me eyeing up Watford's defence more. Should Gomez get a 4.5 tag (v unlikely as will prob be 5m) he looks great. Silva and home games are often good for clean sheets.

If FPL provide very few forward options below 9m as they did this year then I'm either going to go 3-5-2 from the off with Kane or swerve him altogether.

I remember when RVP got that 14m tag and failed to live up to it. I avoided him at the start then and it proved the sensible move.

On previous evidence they pick up on strikers like this and really push the price up. With golden boot two seasons in a row, playing for a top team, nailed on, on penalties he will be 13m no doubt.

Aguero, RVP, Ronaldo etc....all saw substantial price hikes after stellar seasons.

It would be interesting to see previous stats of how Kane does in the PL whilst Spurs are in Europe. He seems to do better when they have one game a week. Comes across as a slow starter to me.

Its a bit of an unknown as this is the first season in a long time where he'll get a good rest.

I'm more worried about the Wembley factor for Spurs as a whole rather than Kane's slow start.

The Wembley factor is a thing but I'd rather have Kane from the off than not. Not having him at 13m could hurt TV after a few weeks if he hits the ground running. He'll be in my team - easier to sell him than buy him.

Indeed. That's why 3-5-2 looks appealing at the start...especially as there should be some value among mids - Knockaert, Ritchie etc.

Think the key learning is to be open minded and flexible to trends as they occure, regardless of formation

If King i.e. had been listed as a forward last season surely the prefered formation would have been 3-4-3 for most managers as long has he performed, and we wouldnt be talking about 3-5-2 as game changing strategy. Small things.

Personally I think it could be easier to find good value in 6 mnok in defense than in attack, and shift that third striker into a wingback defender. But we'll see =)

I believe Kane will be worth the 13m, and 3-5-2 will be a good option for much of the season.

Just think it's tricky from the off to know which 4.5m forward will be a regular starter and the right one to get on. One should emerge, but may take until late September/October.

Hitting the right 6.0-7.5m third forward in a 3-4-3 was a real problem for me last season, so hoping some more consistent options emerge in that price bracket. Not holding my breath though!

I wonder if 442 might even be an option? What price would the 4th and 5th mid be in a 352 and could a top 6.5 defender outscore him?

Personally I think I might try and fly a 4 at the back strategy with three big gun wing backs and 2 rotating cheapies.

If I go down this route then I think I might be under pressure finance wise and will likely only pick one big forward.
The options are not great up top for next season in my opinion so I would probably go for Aguero at this point due to:

      Spurs form in wembley,
Utd not scoring goals and nobody knows who will be their striker,
Chelsea probably having lukaku which will stunt their goal output plus they will have Europe and Hazard will likely be on pens meaning less free goals for Kaku,
arsenal don't have a striker that is nailed and any good,
Liverpool not playing with a striker
      Everton having an untried/new striker

I might even end up rocking a 4-4-2/4-5-1 formation for the start of the season with a benteke like second striker and a cheapie third striker freeing up funds for a decent midfield. If you look at it in terms of getting forwards/goals in your team you can get the likes of siggy, firmino, mane, alli, pedro, sanchez, Sane, redmond?, king, phillips, lanzini, snodgrass, arnautovic who are all arguably played as forwards in their respective teams and many of whom have less uncertainty around them than the aforementioned expensive strikers.

For me the most interesting thing next season (apart from all the new signings) will be how spurs do at Wembley.

I will probably be looking at a team like this (subject to some cheap oops allowing for a change in tactics):

      4.5, 4.5 rotating gk (9m)

      6, 6, 5.5, 4.5, 4.5 defence (26.5m)

      10.5, 9.5, 7.5, 6, 7.5 (41m)

      12, 7, 4.5 fwds (23.5m)

He will be in my GW 1 team. Easier to sell him should he start slow than to buy him later on. I made that mistake with Zlatan last year and I played keep up for a while.

If Abraham is at Newcastle, there's your cheap third striker to balance the books as required. Still think I'll avoid Kane (he should be the poster boy 13M striker this year) as Lukaku / Morata / Aguero should get similar returns at a fairer price.

Can't see lukaku getting anywhere close with Hazard on pens, Morata has not played football for a year and will be playing in an ultra negative set up, Aguero is the one I'm looking at but Jesus might not be a bad option depending on tactics.

4-4-2 was my best average scoring formation, granted the same size was less than 5 games last year, but I do feel it warrants some consideration on my part. With the proliferation of wing backs crusading forward, joining the attack. Alonso, Rose, Walker, Coleman, van Aanholt, Clyne and Valencia are just a few.

That 5th midfielder, usually a budget buy seemingly struggles for consistent returns. That 3rd forward, may not be so budget friendly at 7.0m. Forwards of lesser value, 5-0.5.5m may be hard to come back and unless it happens to be a "diamond in the rough" ala Austin or Ighalo, points won't be all that plentiful.

Depending on prices, I could be inclined to load up defensively in a 4-4-2 formation and back on those marauding wing backs to help my weekly score.

As for the 3-4-3 vs 3-5-2 formation debate, both were within 0.1 points of each other for the season when played. As someone mentioned, remaining flexible is the best thing to do as the season rolls along.

Like every season Jonty, it really is wait and see, but be willing to be flexible.

Until last season, I was a die hard 3-4-3, always thinking it gave the ultimate flexibility. However, with the poor 3rd striker options, and sooo many good midfield options, it became clear that 3-5-2 could reap big rewards. The art then became having the right two heavy hitters up front.

Next season could be completely different, you can just never tell. But with the formations now employed by many of the teams in the Premier League (lone striker and more attacking mids), I think 3-5-2 in FPL could become more regularly viable.

        Heaton, Alonso, Sanchez and Kane...

Alonso and Sanchez were top for most of the season in their positions whilst Jesus was top striker with a couple of weeks to go.... but Harry duffed him up...

You always get a few part time picks at the top but they don't really count.

Not the most noisy transfer, but could be the most significant of this window

Unless he is very cheap, I'll avoid. He scored a decent amount of goals for Monaco this season, but can't see him doing the same in United as they play a different type of football. 13 YCs in 53 games. Maybe comparable to Fernandinho?

From his 15 goals 13 have been penalties. Excellent penalty record, so if he gets those some would maybe take a punt on him, like Milner.

Agree Ronka's the all-time best, but I think HoF is a much more useful indicator of how managers will do next season.

The way the current hof is calculated is a joke imo. Pretty much suited to the mods. This is a much better indicator and rightly puts ville as top dog.

Hof scoring should be updated for next season. Travesty if it isn't.

Its supposed to be a hall of fame not a hall of form.

I agree we should get Chris' thoughts on refining the HoF again.

However, I don't see how you feel we've doctored if for the mods? Which mods? If you mean myself, I did have to keep my side of the bargain.

Also, I do think the HoF has to reflect the fact that the game has changed. There are now far more players (making it more competitive) and the chips have changed the game so surely it makes sense that more recent seasons have more weighting as they are more relevant.

If Ville is really top dog he can prove it by finishing stronger next season - it's a level playing field but the fact is that Peter K has outranked him in three successive seasons and finished top 300 in each. That's simply outstanding and surely should be recognised.

Darn, a Scoutcast appearance would have been good! A season too late for me, was 8th in HoF and then last season happened! Was in Jonty's millionaires league but managed to salvage something in last few weeks to get back to 59k.

That's another reason why I like the weighting. You can acheive a decnet hike with a good season but similarly, you can slip badly if you falter. I was outside of the top 50 before last season after a very average 2015/16.

If there was no weighting, the top managers as it stands would almost be set in stone and it would be so difficult to break in - the HoF would be duller and less competitive.

As it is, there is pressure to keep up a level of consistency if you want to figure in the top brackets.

There's an argument to have two separate 'halls' I think.

You mention the top managers being almost set in stone - that's kind of what a hall of fame is about in my view, a tribute to those managers who performed extraordinarily over a long period.

I like the existing HoF too but it feels too changeable to be a measure of all time greatness, it's more of a 'hall of form' as others have pointed out.

I can see your argument Mark for the weighting as it is, because it allows decent hikes and falls depending on a season. However, I also like Greenwindmills thoughts on two separate lists because a Hall of Fame is about the best over a longer period of time. But then what time period do you use to define 'longer period?'

Alternatively, you could always tweak the HoF so that the weighting towards more recent seasons isn't as great as it currently is.

It is a difficult one and understandably there will be contrasting views on this.

Ha anyone ever been able to track Ville Ronka down? Surely he should be able to get an interview of because he is obviously in the FFS league to be able to enter the HOF. I secretly thinks he likes being elusive, I call it pretty arrogant!
And another reason why I think he's pretty arrogant is the way he seemingly gave up on GW38. For this reason alone I don't think you can call him the best FPL manager of all time. Surely the best FPL manager of all time would have drafted Harry Kane into his team for GW38. Just a thought!!
If he has another poor season (by his standards) next year, will he give up even earlier.
Like you said earlier Mark, Peter has beaten Ronka in the last 3 seasons not just one so for me, anyone that has consistently beaten him over each of the last 3 years deserves to be ahead of him in the HOF.

Some great work Patch. I thnk there is now a meta mini-league going on with some of the top HoF managers and I find it fascinating to see the consistency on show - it highlights that there are methods at play and that luck, while a factor, clearly can't be an overriding influence.

Ben, I'm a bit confused by your third table (No disasters).

It looks as if Ville Ronka scores 0.89 by finishing in the top 11,111 eight times out of nine,
and the next six score 0.88 by finishing in the top 12,500 seven times out of eight.
Why not take the percentage of times they have finished in the top 10,000 rather than in the top 100,000 * (1-m),
and then order players on the same score according to their total points?

Am I right in thinking that a score of 0.99 could be achieved by finishing in the top thousand every time, even for a first-timer, and that a score of 0.90 could be achieved by finishing in the top 10,000 every time?
Is a minimum number of seasons played required before being eligible for this table?

Presumably Ville Ronka's score for finishing in the top 5,000 for eight seasons out of eight would have been about 0.95.

Actually, perhaps you should stick with your original formula for the third table, so that the system will still work for lesser performers who have not been finishing in the top 10,000.
You could however split the next six by calculating the percentages to several places of decimals - or more simply by looking at their second worst finish:

        1. Ville Ronka (8/9, 8th best: 4668)
        2. Tom Freeman 7/8 (7th best: 5671)
        3. Phil Ampleford 7/8 (7th best: 6095)
        4. Utkarsh Dalmia 7/8 (7th best: 7627)
        5. Matthew Jones 7/8 (7th best: 9076)
        6. * Evs * 7/8 (7th best: 10091)
        7. Dave Shu 7/8 (7th best: 11393)
        8.Grant Barclay 6/7 (6th best: 6934)
        9.Johan Lindback 6/7 (6th best: 7318)
        10.Tom Wraight 6/7 (6th best: 9619)
        11. Anthony Kitson 6/7 (6th best: 12293)

        But is 7/8 (7th best: 11393) really better than 6/7 (6th best: 6934)?
        And would a hypothetical 1/1 (best: 999) really be better than 8/8 (8th best: 4688) or a hypothetical 6/7 (6th best: 800)?

On reflection, I don't really like this table.
I much prefer your second one (Geometric Mean Rank).

          * Replace the last two lines of my comment with:

Perhaps this table ought to have a minimum of 4 seasons, like the second one.
Then putting a hypothetical 4/4 (4th best: 999) above 8/8 (8th best: 4668) would not seem too unreasonable.

        Hi, great work.
Posting this here as I'm a no-tweeting dinosaur
You report the geometric mean formula too, that's great, but you might want to review it.
You wrote it with a Sigma(1-to-n Sum), while by its definition
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometric_mean
it's "the n-th root of the *product* of n numbers" thus it's written with a Pi (1-to-n Product)

I didn't go all the way with data collection and effort, but when tinkering with the issue myself last season I was considering to use the Harmonic mean instead. It greatly favors small numbers (i.e. top ranks) and condones large ones (i.e. bad seasons), it depends how much you want that 🙂

I discarded it as it actually places all FPL winners and top 10 at the top, regardless how bad their other seasons were, but maybe some compromise/combination could be found to furtherly optimise it

Average points or average rank is still the best way to determine the HoF imo. It's about the quality of the FPL managers and how they have done it, whether it is last season or 5 seasons or 10 seasons before, every year should be considered equally imo. 🙂
As said above, it is Hall of Fame, not Hall of Form.

But do you not think that a top 10,000 rank is more difficult to achieve next season than it was five seasons ago, just because there are a million more players?

Football and FPL has changed so I think it's healthy for the HoF to have some weighting to reflect that. However, the degree of weighting is certainly up for debate.

From what I remember from the Professor's explanations in the past the HoF rankings aren't actually based off FPL rank but rather FPL points which I think makes the volume of participants less of an issue (but not a complete non-issue). I may be wrong though.

Ultimately there's no 'right' way to do things - it depends what you want to measure. His current algorithm is great at what it does, the question is what do you actually want it to do...

I view this somewhere in the middle. While it's obviously more competitive than ever, the idea of a 'Hall of Fame' itself suggests some sort of prioritisation of days gone by.

I think the current HOF is too dependent on this season's / last season's points. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

If they used this method for a football Hall of Fame, the likes of Pele, Maradona, etc would be classed as nobodies whilst the likes of Harry Kane would be at the top.

Ville Ronka had just ONE bad season (his first finish outside top 5k, and 21k is still not that bad) and he goes down from no.1 to no.14!

Let's compare that with Graeme Sumner (current HoF no.2) who has FOUR finishes outside 5k, including one at 55k and one at 41k. Ronka had just one finish outside the top 5k.

Graeme's average rank is 14k. Ville Ronka's average rank is 3k. A huge difference!!!

But HoF says that Graeme is no.2 and Ronka is no.14.

Yep, there's no doubt that the current HoF would see greats fade away in time rather than be preserved. Depends what it's meant to represent really.

If we consider the average points where there will be no effect of more players in recent years. 🙂

          Graeme average points : 2286
          Ronka average points : 2329

For managers who play in different seasons this becomes a tricky metric though - some seasons have a much higher average points (the Suarez season was a big one from memory). Also, rule changes influence the amount of points available - the bonus is much more generous than 10 years ago for example so there are more points on offer.

Some sort of positive deviation from the mean might be workable I guess...

Just to confirm, I have taken the average points of the last 8 seasons, where both Graeme and Ronka played all these 8 seasons. 🙂

Oh sure, for that example it works, I'm just pointing out that there would be other examples which aren't fair. There's no perfect system because there's no true measure of who the best ever manager is 🙂

Following from my previous comments above...

If we have a record of the number of managers for each season (or atleast the approximate round-off values), then I think this is the best method to determine the HoF : 🙂

I will take an example for better understanding -

Season 1 rank divided by number of managers who played FPL in Season 1
      PLUS
Season 2 rank divided by number of managers who played FPL in Season 2
      PLUS
Season 3 rank divided by number of managers who played FPL in Season 3
      PLUS
Season 4 rank divided by number of managers who played FPL in Season 4.

Now divide this whole thing by 4.

Average FPL points is another method. It's advantage is that it is not affected by more number of managers in recent seasons. It's drawback is that there are some high scoring seasons (like the season when Suarez simply bursted). Also the introduction of chips in recent seasons also increases the FPL points compared to the earlier seasons.

Adrian should get a transfer to somewhere he'll get fielded. He's one of the best GK's in PL, should play day-in day-out for almost any team, let alone for WHU.

Bilic obviously isnt set on his keepers. Started with Adrian then Randolph got 21 games and then Adrian back in.
I think Hart is still a good keeper and its easy to pick up on things he does.

there are countless examples to pick out on what Hart has done wrong. Constant terribles performances in major tournaments and competitive games.

He was also dreadful at Torino. Quite frankly he's not a top keeper and will do well to get any gig in the PL again.

I think we could count quite a few players who are constantly bad at major tournaments. International football isn't really a barometer for club form.

No, but Lloris comes well out of his goal and actually plays the ball well, and you know, sometimes that fails and it looks bad. Hart is constantly poor at coming out of his goal, and at passing, so he relies completely on his shot stopping, but although he is quite good at it, he often does awful mistakes even at that. Although I think Hart is not as bad as his reputation nowadays, he nevertheless is not a top GK and I'm not quite sure how he is better than Adrian.

I do not disagree with anything you say. I actually think i personally maybe Value shot stopping more (probably from my love of Andy Goram). He's an old style type keeper. I think he'll do well at a club who tend to allow a high amount of shots on goal.

Fantasy articles appear (closer to when season starts again) with along the rest of the news, so you have to look around to find them, they offer predicted lineups, best fixtures, 5 key players etc. Some good tips, some not so good also every now and then.

No problem, I'm anxiously waiting what they have in mind for next season. Some of the pricing was a bit weird, but it was their first season last year so they'll have much more information to go with this time. It's not a game for everyone because you have to be alert, but give it a go if you have the time and see if you like it. 🙂

I reckon if any of the four teams were to get off to a bad start after 8 games, then Jose would probably be under the most pressure. I feel city owners think Pep is their guy and will give him time ( more than expected anyway)

          • 14 Years

I think all of them will be under a lot of pressure should that happen.

Pep - City could spend £200 million or more this window. Expectations will be huge. Even on here everyone is saying how City should be challenging for the title already.

Arsene - He took the job on obviously because he still believes he can do it. If Wenger can hold on to both Sanchez and Ozil (tough ask) and then they struggle, not only does the pressure mount from the fans who will no doubt be back to expecting them to win the league but the players could start eyeing the January window as a way out.

Mourinho - Assuming he gets what he wants then he's assembled the team he believes he can accomplish a lot with. If that stutters he'll have a lot of pressure on him. I actually think the United board will give him more time since he was their identified long term successor to Fergie for quite some time. The fans won't be as understanding he has to revert to the dull grinding out matches again.

Klopp - Again, assuming he gets what he wants then the excuses will be hard to come by. Add to that the Pool fans are already fairly steamed over the transfer fiascos so far, they're in a bit of a dodgy position before the season has started. Klopp said when he signed that within 4 years he'd have won the league with Liverpool, they need to start showing that kind of intent or patience will begin to wane.

All of them need to get off to a strong start imo.

You need to upgrade that 5.5 mid slot somehow. No guarantees there will be any value at that price point and if not you are carrying dead weight in your first XI. Good balance otherwise though.

Agreed. Downgrade the keeper and one of the defenders. Upgrade the 5th mid or get a 3rd striker.

I am still a fan of Kamil Grosicki, was excising down the left side for now relegated Hull, but rumor he's moving to Watford under Silva again. Some of the 5.5 mids from last year played well in spurts, Phillips of WBA and Puncheon of Palace.

Fabregas, Sigurdsson, King, Zaha, maybe Sane/Lallana/Pedro/Son/Fabregas if we get lucky

No chance Sane or Pedro are 7.5. Hopefully Siggy is but wouldn't be surprised if they give him a slight increase to 8m. I expect King to be a forward. Fabregas wasn't nailed last season and I'm sure Chelsea will sign another centre mid.

I have a hunch Lukaku will struggle to begin with. He scores goals by happenstance of being in the right place of the right time, rather than making them happen for himself or his team (although this is a generalisation). Costa would have scored more at Everton I think, and the other Everton players would have scored more goals too. Having said that, if Chelsea are providing Lukaku with chances, he could still hit the ground running by goal hanging and the happenstance of receiving the ball on a plate in decent positions, even if it requires extra work from the team to compensate for his lack of Costa's qualities.

(I don't really know what happenstance is)

Haha clearly 😉 but I do feel we really underrate Lukaku on FFS. Kane might have Ibra ownership and that's scary though

I hope Kane is at least 13m to keep the game risky and interesting. I do agree we've ignored Lukaku too much on FPL, but mostly when we're being sentimental with premium options to which he is often comparable but available at a cheaper price.

If Lukaku comes in around 11.0 at Chelsea, that would strongly tempt me. Most of us would pay that much for Costa, and I rate Lukaku more than Costa

              • 8 Years

Fair enough. I prefer Costa myself. He was also already proven at chelsea for that price. It's hard to imagine Lukaku in the current Chelsea team, but maybe he'll be a perfect match and really kick on. That's what makes the game good though. One of us might think he's worth it, and the other might think not, and that affects the rest of our teams. Yayyy for no template.

We have visions of Lukaku being a flat track bully, but how often does he really turn it on and punish defences? I think there's a romantic view of Lukaku we hold based on the potential we saw in him at WBA and the fact he does actually score goals. I hope I'm wrong and he finally blossoms at Chelsea. What am I saying? I hope Chelsea struggle with him in the team!

Where does Mahrez think he can get to? He would get more minutes at Arsenal than any other top 6 team unless we injured him. I'm not desperate for us to sign him anyway, but he would improve the starting 11.
