The Numbers Game – Arsenal

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, gets underway this evening.

Starting with Arsenal, we’ll look at the performance levels of each team and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new campaign.

In certain cases, we also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in the Gunners’ case, this involves a switch in formation to a 3-4-2-1 in the latter stages of the campaign.

Runners-up to Leicester City on 71 points in 2015/16, the Gunners chalked up 75 points this time around but could only muster a fifth place finish.

Although Arsene Wenger’s side also found the net more often (up from 65 goals to 77), their underlying numbers reveal an overall decline in performance.

In many ways, preparing for GW1 is the most strategically satisfying aspect of the game 🙂 I had a very good start to last season (3k OR) before my form dropped off revealing my lack of class 😀

Agreed, each season I become more fixated on the opening 3-4 Gameweeks. It will be the same this time around. Looking forward to seeing if the computers offers up any unlikley targets.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has received significant international investment interest in recent weeks, including one party from China.

It is understood Ashley, who has reportedly tried to sell the north-east club twice in the past, is now considering all options open to him.

Newcastle might have a new rich owner!

Watford target Kamil Grosicki is still no closer to resolving his own future at Hull City, according to the Watford Observer.

The Poland winger, 28, is reportedly keen to link up with former manager Marco Silva at Vicarage Road, and the new Hornets boss is said to be equally open to re-uniting with the player.

    This deal is imminent.

I liked him - his stats were strong but Watford will need to keep Deeney and get another goalscorer for Grosicki to threaten to offer value I reckon.

Mark, this a really personal request

Please do not let FPL towers list Kachunga, Huddersfield, as a striker. He played there once or maybe even twice, but is a right winger for us. Please Mark I need him in my team

Not that I am sold on Okaka, he did return to the EPL and Watford after netting 15 goals for Anderlecht. Although I don't feel he is the came caliber as Ighalo was (now in China). I still like the Grosicki move if it happens. With the price tag slapped on Deeney I don't think he is going anywhere. Watford for life!

Any other cheap 4th mids in a 343 or 5th in 352 yous have thought of? Knockaert, Kachunga, Ritchie, Stanislas for me

At least one of those have to have a decent enough set of opening fixtures

    1. 6thGoal

Depending on fixtures, I would keep Snodgrass, Phillips and Allen. Assuming they will all fall under 5.5m

I like that group. Im thinking Gross could be better than knockaert, May share set pieces etc...which may in turn keep me away from both of them.
Is Stanislas nailed? If so then definitely agree with that one. I'm also thinking about Gray if Mahrez leaves and he's not replaced

Who'll be the value Arsenal asset? I suspect Iwobi at maybe 6.5m. Alexis was raving about him.

Many good options can come out of Arsenal, only if the players start performing. Iwobi is one but for me
Ramsey won't be priced high...if he can replicate his 2013/14 season form, he will be the pick of the crop. Ox is another one who, if stays, can provide good value.

Yeah I will be a bit disappointed if he's less. Alonso 7.0 if he's a def. Morata 11.0. There are plenty more examples of people hoping players are cheap that I don't understand. If Kolasinac is 5.5 with good fixtures, for example, it forces too many people to pick him.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years

Agree with those picks. Kolasinac is a no-brainer if at 5.5. I actually think Morata could be 10.0 given we finished 6th. Be interesting to see if they overprice United players again.

Too many great value options in defence.

yes not many sub 6.5m mids and fwds can match the output.

but i like the value from cheap rotating 4.5/4.0 defenders too. Holebas 15 pointers was sweet

I loved UFPL last season....One of the things I really liked was fixed prices for the season.

    It had a few effects.

Firstly. when setting out an initial squad the balance of funds was really important across all positions to allow easy loans.
Secondly. No matter how good a pick Kane is (or Aguero/RVP) the way that FPL works means they can't be sold and bought back easily due to loss of value...and so the game shrinks a little...meanwhile in UFPL you could easily gamble on ditching him for a week or three.
Thirdly. The pressure for early transfers was removed without any price fluctuations.

Hard to put into words maybe for those who didn't play it but the UFPL game seemed to facilitate far more short term picks than FPL.

So...Do we actually need price movement in FPL?...is the game actually a better or worse game because of it?

Yeah. I fully expected that UFPL would do a price revision for January...(we got a batch of transfers for Jan)....but they didn't. I think they missed a trick there tbh. It would have been a really good game changer.

TFF has no price changes, but I think it suffers because of it.

I shouldn't say tempting because there's no basis for that until we've seen fixtures and prices but I'm liking the idea of a strong defence this year. Chelsea, Spurs, United, Arsenal and City should all provide strong options at the back. On top of that you have cheaper attacking defenders from smaller teams like Daniels, Dann, Cedric, Janmaat, etc.

It's not a terrible shout TBH. Switching the 6.0 4th mid and 4.5 def for a premium defender and fodder mid could be a genius move if the 6-7m mid bracket is as tame as it was last season. How much time did we waste chasing the next best sub 7m mid last year before Josh arrived on the scene.

My thioughts are already on a defence of....
        Cheap rotation GK's
        Ars, Che, Spurs, United, fodder
And 3 of the following strikers...
        Kane/Kun/Jesus/Morata/Lukaku.
Playing 433 actually makes this possible

I think this is a legit strategy to get 3 heavy hitters upfront.
I think alot of talk is going to be around cheap, nailed mids with high potential. Theres already been alot of talk about Ritchie, Knockaert, Stanislas

3 heavy hitters up front will ruin your squad balance early doors imo. So many heavy hitters is likely only probable once TV builds later in the season.

Same. Exactly why I've been thinking about this...and then seeing someone posting about it, I thought my input was worth sharing. I had 4 premium defenders last season and really thrived with them. Admittedly I went 442 all the way though

Alot of folk seem to be dissing Liverpools approach for Mbappe but I think we are in a strong position as we can offer one of Sturridge, Origi or Ings as part payment. Arsenal have Sanogo as bait while Real have Benzema(who won't leave) and Morata who's going to Utd

I'll be interested to see what he does, if he decides to stay or not.

No question he's very talented and had a great season last season. But played for one of the most, if not they most, attacking side in Europe. I wonder if he moves perhaps his returns could dip a little and at the fees being asked he'd no doubt be unfairly classified as an epic flop should that happen.

I tend to agree. I think I'll go cheap in defense with maybe one splurge. It's all about finding value and letting the dust settle first 5 or so rounds to have a good look at defense.

I'll be taking a look at all the fixtures on my (our) site and predicting when teams will have their time in the sun when they come out... Only issue is I have to somehow combine this with a work trip which is less good!! Boo

Probably be best looking for HUD starter fixtures firstly. Unless they really get to it and have a big influx ofPL quality players, we might well see them having a rough landing in the Prem... Might be wrong and they could spring a surprise (Hull beating Leicester on day one of last season springs to mind) but you've gotta go with the likelihood that they won't have a fun time for now.

    Amazing article, really thought provoking.

We are such a conditional team right now in terms of judging how good we'll be!

Kolasinac we think might well prove decent. And on an FT as well. But so much hinges on Sanchez remaining - it'll be a real body blow for him to depart, I think many in the team will be wondering about the future unless we can really get some "marquee" statement signings in. And with us being in the UEL I am worried that Arsene's natural thriftiness might stop him pulling "a united" and paying the premium for the long term target (e.g. Pogba).

Really tall order. Hopefully he will realise because of 5th he can't rest on his laurels and needs to figure it out... But he was still defending the points total up until the end, so I guess I could need further persuading that he's going to change tack.

Brrr... About to board a flight and will be thinking about this for a while now haha
