Premier League Fixtures Announced

The Premier League fixture list for 2017/18 was published at 9am today, granting us the opportunity to pencil in some likely targets for our initial squads.

Early analysis reveals that only two teams – Manchester United and Championship play-off winners Huddersfield Town – manage to avoid all of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks.

Jose Mourinho’s men alternate home/away for those opening rounds, starting off with an Old Trafford visit from West Ham and a trip to Swansea City before facing up to Leicester City, Stoke City, Everton and Southampton.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, begin their season with a trip to Crystal Palace before back-to-back home encounters with Newcastle and Southampton. The Terriers also face West Ham, Leicester and Burnley in the opening six, suggesting they could play a part in our initial plans.

The new schedule has also been relatively kind to fellow promoted pair Newcastle (TOT, hud, WHU, swa, STO, bri) and Brighton (MCI, lei, wat, WBA, bou, NEW), who both face just one of last term’s top six for the first six matches.

Newcastle’s initial five road trips – Huddersfield, Swansea, Brighton, Southampton and Burnley – look promising, bearing in mind that they accumulated more points on the road than any side in last term’s Championship.

Although Brighton face a testing opening home encounter with Man City, nine of their following 10 at home (WBA, NEW, EVE, SOU, STO, CPL, BUR, WAT, BOU) also offer encouragement, with only a troublesome visit from Liverpool in that run. Chris Hughton’s side earned more points at home than any Championship outfit in 201617, with 12 of their 21 clean sheets arriving at the Amex.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ opening schedule suggests that many will be earmarking a place for Harry Kane from the get-go, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men squaring up to only one of last year’s top six in the first eight Gameweeks (new, CHE, BUR, eve, SWA, whu, hud, BOU).

But Man City have also been handed some kind-looking matches (bri, EVE, bou, LIV, wat, CPL) to kick off their campaign and their main attackers could also be quick off the mark.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Champions League play-off matches, which follow Gameweek 1 and 2 clashes with Watford and Palace, are worth bearing in mind – all the more so when you consider that they take on Arsenal and Man City in the subsequent two league fixtures.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s first five home matches – against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea – could promote early investment, particularly if Arsene Wenger looks to rotate for Europa League matches.

Similarly, Burnley and Swansea have some favourable opening fixtures in front of their own supporters.

The Clarets – who claimed 33 of 40 points at Turf Moor last term – welcome West Brom, Palace, Huddersfield, West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea in their first six at home. However, this is offset by an evil run of away matches (che, tot, liv, eve, mci) for Sean Dyche’s side that will, at the very least, keep Tom Heaton busy between the posts.

After hosting Man United in Gameweek 2, Paul Clement’s Swansea then welcome Newcastle, Watford, Huddersfield, Leicester, Brighton and Bournemouth for their subsequent six at the Liberty.

Looking at the tougher schedules, Everton and Leicester have been arguably handed the most testing opening runs across the first six Gameweeks, with both squaring up to four of last term’s top six.

From Gameweek 2-5, in particular, Ronald Koeman’s side look a no-go area, with trips to Man City, Chelsea and Man United in addition to a home clash with Spurs.

The Foxes travel to Arsenal and United and entertain Chelsea and Liverpool, although this is offset by encounters against newcomers Brighton and Huddersfield.

Finally, just a heads-up that the new fixture ticker for 2017/18 is now live on site – here’s a preview movie entailing the features involved.

I'd like to start a petition to....

Change BRT to BRG in the fixture ticker.

I keep thinking Bristol City are in the Premier League.

Weirdly my brain wouldn't associate BRI with Bristol City. Very strange.

      Already proposed this.

Burnley has become BRN and Brighton added as BRT. Doesn't help for quick reference (BRN BRT brn brt)

BUR & BRI seem the better option, the vowels help imo.
Mark is looking into it as it was an OPTA change only made today with the fixture release. Going to see what FPL and others do.

First draft should look something like this, pending prices. Do you think its realistic?

    Foster (4.5) - 4.0
    Bailly/Lindelof (5.5) - Cedric (5.0) - WBA (4.5) - NEW (4.5) - 4.0
    KDB (11.0) - Alli (10.5) Pedro (7.5) - 6.0 - 4.5
    Morata (10.0) - Jesus (10.5) - Defoe (8.0)

There's so many high potential scoring midfielders and forwards that you will jave to leave out a couple of the top teams. Liverpool are risky as it's impossible to predict who will perform out of Cout/Mane/etc. I suppose we'll see when the prices are released

Most of the top teams have difficult fixtures except Man Utd and Man City may be. Having in mind rotation risks in Pep's squad and Man Utd 'creativity' in attack I would prefer mid from Liverpool who proved themselves last year against top teams.
Probably it will be Mane or Coutinho...depends on pre-season and injury news etc..

Last few years I have used my first by GW4, even though I wanted to hang on to it a bit long, for flexibility. Although out of the international break, I think injury necessitated it 2 years ago and I originally planned on activating the WC after the first international break last year. It worked in the short term, but hurt me in the long term before we had the second WC.

Here's another pseudo-RMT because I know you all miss them after some weeks of blissful quiet 😉
If we get some cheapo playing (or even semi-playing) defs from Huddersfield and Brighton then we could end up with some really nice 4-4-2 possibilities. This is all rough of course, with small money changes going around for personal preference e.g. having a 6.0, 5.5, 5.0 in defence instead of 3x 5.5

    4-4-2:
    4.5 4.5 = 9.0
    5.5 5.5 5.5 4.5 4.0 = 25.0
    10.0 9.5 8.0 5.5 4.5 = 37.5
    13.0 11.0 4.5 = 28.5

The only problem I see with this is finding a reliably playing 4.0 defender or 4.5 midfielder/forward for 1st bench spot. I think it could be flexible enough to deal with the shocks that the first part of the season brings, and good for building TV as you could switch around a lot.

Looks sensible, tho as always need to remain flexible, e.g. 4-4-2 starts to look weaker if a clutch of relatively high-scoring low-mid price mids and fwds emerges.

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Of course. Just thinking that any bargains in that range (A la Josh King) would take a while to pop up. Then again, I could be wrong and a 5.0 Kachunga suddenly becomes the 3rd highest-ranked midfielder of next year 😉

Seems like there is no more news of LFC looking for a defender after that VVD debacle, I could be wrong. If no new signing at the back, Milner will defo be in my GW1 team, if locked on pens.

For me it depends on the price, but LFC do win a lot of penalties so could be a good shout indeed.

Best 3 way rotation I've found so far (budget, ofc):

    WBA/SWA/BUR

    WAT
    HUD
    LEI
    sot
    BHA

I think so. The WBA defence didn't do too well last season and he was 5.0 then so I'd expect a drop. He didn't produce enough attacking returns to keep him above 4.5 imo unlike McAuley and Brunt.

He scored 4 goals this year. That's joint 5th among defenders. He also scored 4 goals last year. Dawson is the least risky WBA defender for me. He's young, has no injury history, plays every game, and is a set piece threat. He should be 5.0.

Exactly this. Was one of my first thoughts today (apart from the more than decent start for WBA)
          MNU - great start
          SOT = SWA/whu/hud/WAT/cpl
          Then WBA = : BOU/bur/STK/bha/WHU

Might as well get a 4.5 from SWA and a 4.0 in, and you're sorted til early WC!

SOT game is likely to be at home to WHU now given the news (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/jun/14/premier-league-fixtures-2017-18-chelsea-burnley-tottenham-newcastle-chelsea-liverpool)

Hmm I tend to blow it around GW5-6 when things are looking dicey, and players in form begin to really emerge.

It's a lottery and I don't think having a strict strategy around it is particularly useful (unlike the H2 WC which is clearly a lot more tactical).

I say a lottery because SO much depends on the start, how well you do with your initial team and how quickly you can adjust. If you do OK, you can hold your WC - I like your idea of keeping it til later - but, if you are flailing quickly it's best to just bite the bullet imo!

Of course, as a Swedish Utd fan, I'll have him either way if I do go with a Utd defender.
My policy, pre-Zlatan, was always to stay away from Utd players as the hurt gets doubled if they play poorly and lose.

Bertrand out of those. I think VVD will be gone. Cedric has a past of rotation around a heavy schedule. You could say Bertrand does too but not ss much imo. Yoshida could be the one too.

yep. could take your chances with 1 premium, 2 of these guys on pitch, 1 on bench and one fodder too. Will have to see.
FWIW Swansea/WBA have a really good rotation in of themselves:
        BOU
        bur
        STO
        NEW
        WHU
        WAT
        HUD
        LEI
        MCI
        BHA
        bur
        BOU
        NEW
        CPL
        WBA

Adding Burnley in there just softens a few of the fixtures (e.g. the MCI one :D)

Have you discovers a good home/away rotation including Watford? Preferably 2-way but as always, 3-way doable.

Yeah I had a look, and will do more analysis later, but WAT did have quite a choppy schedule that I couldn't quite make fit with anyone. LEI was OK I think..

Fabregas should be bumped to 8.0. The 9 games he didn't play were within the first 13 games. He would have gotten a respectable 162 points if he had performed to the same level as his 25 last games during those 9 games.

Looking at this budget spread thus far

    4.5 4.0

    6.0 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0

    10 8.0 8.0 8.0 5.5

    13 10.5 4.5

    translating to a 352...

    Foster

    6.0 T.Smith Nyom

    Alli Salah Pedro Sané Kachunga

    Kane Lukaku/Jesus

Does it look realistic to you?

In an interview with France Football last season, Corentin Tolisso said: “Many clubs make me dream like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and England with teams like Arsenal.

Its now all but confirmed that hes moving to Bayern for a fee of 40 mil €

Looks like Wenger cant even get Frenchmen into his club. Would be a proper signing too, for a very decent price considering the market state.

Southamptons fixtures are really strong for 11 weeks before turning hairy. Is there anyone worth considering though given their lack of attacking output towards the end of the season? Considering a defender though.

I'm a bit less inclined to pick Butland now, unless he is 4.5m and I can get Foster, Forster or maybe Fabianski for 4.5 as well.

Promoted teams all have ok starts as well which doesn't help deciding which teams assets I'd like. Still thinking of Richie but will depend on price.

Bertrand, Yoshida. Maybe an attacker but no one in particular appeals to me yet. Tadic doesn't live up to the FPL hype. JWP isn't really an FPL asset. One of the strikers could maybe do well. Though Austin is injury prone. Gabbi is a wait and see.

    9.5m Mane 8.5m Ozil 8m Sane 6.5m Zaha 6m Ritchie

If I use a premier keeper, i'll back him up with a 4.0. When would you play your Huddie goalie?

      Defence - fine
Mane - play every week, with Champ League qualifiers?
Sane - play every week in crowded top-quality squad of midfielders?
Aguero - play every week with Jesus on form?
Austin - does he start or Gabbi?

Fair point about 2nd keeper, mainly because they have a Home rotation with United, but thinking about it now it'd be wise to just go for a 4m as back up. Mane is Liverpools best player imo can't see him being dropped, feel as if Sane is the only LW City have (if they don't sign Sanchez). Austin was quality when he was fit, so don't see why he shouldn't start week in week out, & feel Pep has finally realised that Aguero has to start every game as there's no better ST in the PL

If Tottenham's GW3 fixture against Burnley is rescheduled to take place at Turf Moor then their start to the campaign will be new, CHE, bur, eve. Three away games and Chelsea at Wembley. Would you still pay 12.5-13m for Kane with those fixtures?

Special programme at 7PM on Sky Sports News Head Quarters regarding the fixtures.

    Even they are desperate.

With Huddersfield kicking off their maiden season in the Prem with a bunch of decent fixtures (cpl NEW SOT whu LEI bur), just a short plug for a timely article I've just published on my and Matamatic's blog (and pod... plog?), Who Got The Assist?, focusing on the prospects of their dangerman (12 goals and 2 assists last year), winger Elias Kachunga.

    http://whogottheassist.com/posts/461

In it, I use his data from last season (courtesy of Squawka) to extrapolate what he might've scored if he was in FPL last season, and then from that give a rating summarising his potential as an FPL prospect for 17/18.

(I've also done this for Kolasinac and Lindelof so far (links in that article), and we have Ederson and Knockaert in the pipeline)

Hope it helps to give you guys more insight into what might well be a half-decent punt 🙂

Just completed a deep analysis of the full season fixtures and realised, once again, I have no idea what I'm doing.
