Scout Report – Victor Lindelof

On Wednesday, Manchester United confirmed their first summer signing with the capture of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof for a reported £31 million.

The Swedish international put pen to paper on a four-year deal, with the option of a further year, and will make his United debut on the summer tour of USA next month.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Jose Mourinho was delighted with the acquisition of the versatile defender:

“Victor is a very talented young player who has a great future ahead of him at United. Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer. I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.”

The History

Lindelof joined the youth set-up at Swedish club Västerås SK as a 13-year-old back in 2007 and progressed to make his senior debut in September 2010.

He made 40 appearances in total for the club, registering one assist, before securing a move to Benfica in December 2011.

Lindelof began at Benfica B, playing 15 matches in 2012/13, with nine of those outings coming at right-back.

The defender made his first-team debut in a 1-0 Portuguese Cup win over CD Cinfães in October 2013, but spent most of that campaign with the reserves. Utilised at centre-back and as a holding midfielder, he bagged two goals and as many assists in 33 appearances.

Despite making his league debut in a 2-1 defeat to Porto in May 2014, Lindelof would again spend the 2014/15 campaign with Benfica B, making 41 appearances, predominantly at centre-back, registering one goal and one assist.

He finally broke into the first-team squad during the second half of 2015/16, scoring once in 15 league appearances, and also made four starts in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Last season, Lindelof was a regular starter for Benfica. He hit one goal in 32 league outings as they secured a fourth successive title, and featured a further eight times in the Champions League.

He has represented Sweden at all age groups from U16 to U21, making 29 appearances, and was part of the side that won the 2015 UEFA European U21 Championship where he was named in the team of the tournament.

Afforded his senior debut in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in March 2016, the defender has currently made 12 appearances for his country, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

While the signing of Lindelof was definitely made with one eye on the future, it’s likely that he’s being lined up to be the first-choice partner for Eric Bailly in central defence next term.

Mourinho is now spoilt for choice in that area of the pitch, with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind all viable options, while the versatile Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe provide further alternatives.

Smalling has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, though, and is expected to depart this summer.

Regardless, we look set to see a degree of rotation in United’s backline, particularly when the UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway following Gameweek 4.

Lindelof’s role and level of involvement will be intriguing.

Likened to former United defender Rio Ferdinand in style, the Swede is comfortable with the ball at his feet and possesses an impressive range of passing.

It will be interesting to see how Mourinho uses those qualities. If Lindelof can fulfil a role of ball carrier, he could free up both Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera to curb their propensity to drop deep to engineer attacks.

Lindelof also boasts a reasonable turn of pace and has good mobility, explaining why he has also featured at right-back on the international stage.

The Swede is described as being very “German” by Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes, with the defender also nicknamed the “Iceman” because of his style of play – tough with a strong mentality, keeping high concentration levels and thriving in aerial duels.

Lindelof has admitted he feels most comfortable at centre-back, with his footballing intelligence and ability to bring the ball out of defence dovetailing well with the physicality and tough tackling of Bailly.

He also spoke of his free-kick taking ability, having scored with a stunning strike against Sporting Lisbon last season:

“I’m quite good at them. If I get an opportunity to take a free-kick, I think I’ll be there!”

He could rival the likes of Pogba, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford for dead-ball duties, although he did only manage one shot from outside the box last term, which suggests he may have to work his way up the pecking order.

The 22-year-old is also a decent tackler, although he likes to stay on his feet, explaining why he rarely concedes fouls, as illustrated by the fact he picked up just one yellow card in the Primeira Liga last term. That could bode well for his prospects in the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS).

However, despite standing at six foot two inches tall, it’s fair to say that Lindelof’s threat from set-pieces is somewhat underwhelming.

He only scored two goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, and last season managed just a shot every 240 minutes.

That trails the likes of Rojo (118.6) and Smalling (173.6), although it was better than both Bailly (343.3) and Jones (528.3).

Meanwhile, his frequency of successful tackles (160 minutes) is significantly inferior to the likes of Bailly (47 minutes), Jones (66 minutes) and Rojo (75 minutes).

Lindelof also lagged behind in terms of minutes per clearance, block and interceptions (CBI), managing one every 16.9 minutes, with Jones (8.7), Rojo (8.8) and Bailly (10) all superior.

This did improve to a CBI every 12.86 minutes in the Champions League, perhaps indicating his numbers could be stronger on the Premier League stage.

His tackle statistics didn’t significantly improve, though, as he made a successful challenge every 144 minutes in European competition.

Those defensive statistics suggest he could struggle to match some of his defensive colleagues in the BPS, although Lindelof may be a cheaper option to help compensate.

Predicting the pricing applied to the United defence is tricky, given the injuries and rotation at play last term. But with Bailly and Antonio Valencia perhaps the most secure options, Lindelof could sit around 5.5 – at least 0.5 cheaper than that pairing.

That could bring him into play as a viable Fantasy asset, providing he immediately establishes himself as the first-choice partner for Bailly.

United’s obliging opening schedule will certainly see many Fantasy managers turn to Jose Mourinho’s side when formulating their initial squads.

They avoid all of last season’s top six over the opening six Gameweeks (WHM, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot), and having tied Tottenham Hotspur for the most clean sheets (17) in 2016/17, it’s at the back where we can really feel a degree of confidence.

Given a seal of approval by compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovic, there’s little doubt United have bought a very talented player.

But from a Fantasy perspective, it is likely that Bailly and Valencia will offer the strongest and preferred routes into the United backline, meaning Lindelof may have to rely on a more favourable price tag to emerge as a viable alternative.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why a Manchester United defender is a must from the start of Gameweek 1

I’m playing slightly devil’s advocate here by immediately decreeing the Manchester United defence essential for Gameweek 1….but there’s certainly a lot of evidence, especially with Lindelof joining.

Arguably Baily and the Swedish defender will be the first choice centre back pairing and provide at last some nailed on defensive options for Fantasy managers.

To be honest – that was all that was missing last year from a stellar Manchester United backline that excelled…. as this Members table shows http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12198/

In terms of clean sheets Mourinho’s troops were joint top with 17, the same as Tottenham and one more than Chelsea.

In terms of big chances conceded United were in a class of their own – only conceding 32, four fewer than the next best Chelsea.

In terms of goals conceded, only Tottenham could better them – the same goes for headed goal attempts.

If there was one area of weakness it was at the heart of defence – with Manchester United just fifth best for chances conceded from the centre – some distance behind top Manchester City. Lindelof should rectify that.

United have the fixtures early on too – avoiding all of last season’s top six in the first six Gameweeks.

For me one of Lindelof, Valencia or Bailly looks a must for Gameweek 1.

Do you agree? Or are you steering clear of their defensive assets? Is money a likely factor? Or do you not fully trust the United rearguard?

I'm tempted to start the season with Alonso, Kompany and Milner.

I really should get a Spurs wing back as well.

As the marine in Predator said: "I ain't got time to bleed slash get a Man Utd defender."

Every manager (Klopp, Pellegrini) loves Milner.

As Pellegrini once said: “I understand. I’m Milner’s No1 fan. Find me a more complete English player. There are players who’re better technically, yes. Quicker players, yes. Players who head better, yes. But show me one who does all the things Milner does well. There isn’t one.”

He plays week in, week out IMO.

Valencia still a potential rotation risk from the beginning? Darmian didn't do badly at the end of last year, and with UCL there's always the chance of switching them up

      Yeah.

ManU open with great fixtures, not much proven end product last season and proven good defensive history despite lots of defensive injuries last season.

I think what's debatable is if doubling up will be worth it.

I agree. Seems like a no-brainer to me given the strength of our defenve and kind fixtures. If Lindelof comes in at 5.5 like je should, he could be great value. Valencia will also probably be worth the extra 0.5 assuming he's 6.0. He could also represent better value than other premium defenders like Alonso or Cahill etc.

Are they going to play every game though? Sure, on paper they may look better than the likes of Cahill, but at least I know Cahill is going to play every game when available.

True. I think the CBs have the best chance. I'm avoiding Valencia as Darmian can step in now and then and do a solid job. There's also uncertainty at LB.

A Utd defender is a must but most likely won't go with Lindelof as we've seen with Maureen that a new transfer does not necessarily mean straight in the starting XI (Mhiki)
Best choice imo would be Baily as definitely nailed

Based on fixtures, his ability to get forward, and (most importantly) security of starts, I'll think about Valencia if he is priced at 6.0 or below. But that's probably the only United option I'll be considering week 1, unless someone else comes in with a price significantly below my expectations.

    10. The Rumour Mill

Completely agree, especially as we prefer to fire and forget defenders to an extent, preferring to jump on the in form attacking assets and chase price rises and the like.

My favourite will be Valencia, and I think he will be nailed on for weeks 1-3. however there is an international break prior to week 4 and he never plays much after those, couple that with the fact that the champions league begins between weeks 4 and 5, and we have a problem.

If Bailly or Lindelof come in cheaper than Valencia, their nailedness over Valencia may make it a no-brainer. We have to also consider Jones and Smalling as threats to them though. What do Utd fans think? Are Jones and Smalling credible threats to Bailly and Lindelof? Will Lindelof be eased into action rather than start GW1 straight away?

Lindelof's lack of goal threat (1 goal last season) is a big drawback for me, RM: we saw last year that goalscoring or at least goal threat was pretty useful (to say the least) for defenders, so I would probably be looking at Tony V regardless. Depends as you say on the pricing of Lindelof too - at 6.0 that would suck!

I think Jones/Smalling are rotation options now, not threats. JM doesn't seem to like them and their injury recovery approach too much 😀

        (emailing you back now btw)

Cool, I tend to steer clear of new players to the league at least initially, for every Zlatan there is a Simone Zaza! I think you've made up my mind to ignore Lindelof for the time being. I'm a big fan of Tony V, he was in my team for much of last season (2 spells in fact), its just that rotation risk hanging over him around internationals breaks and key CL games.

Good point on JM, if true, his approach to medical science is laughable. But you're right, there's always an agenda with JM, thinking about it, its likely he was just giving himself an excuse to drop/sell them in the future! Do you reckon Bailly's relative security of starts (I think) over Valencia and ability to attract bonus makes him the more attractive option?

            Hi RM

Oh god don't remind me of Zaza. I got him in. OOOPS.

I think Bailly is an attractive option of course, but I'm always looking for that extra added edge to any premium defender to justify the price. It's basically the Vertonghen effect. Even though he's cheaper than other Spurs alternatives, I don't want to touch him as he offers bugger all going forward!

I'm not so sure. Rotation worries me. There's also price and attacking returns to consider - might we prefer to concentrate our limited initial funds on someone like Alonso? I do think Valencia might be worthwhile, but we'll have to see what his price is.

United will almost certainly get the most CSs under Jose imo, but I wonder whether players like Azpilcueta can give more value. Azpi in particular is a baps beast, plays in midfield during the attacking phase (source needed), will play every minute of the season, is in a defensive team, and will likely only be around 0.5m more than a nailed on United defender. His pts tally was at top-tier mid level last season!

Lots depends on prices, but I wouldn't call them essential just yet, even if they look set to rake in the clean sheets.

Word of caution in expecting Chelsea to be as right at the back and rotation proof as last year as we don't know what Conte will do with all the extra big games in the champions league. He dropped sombre big players around big cup games last season and with a lot more big games plus fatigue plus fatigue induced injuries I think they will struggle somewhat to match last year's total for minutes and fpl returns.

All of the signals point towards having United defensive coverage come GW1.

Positive numbers from last season. Further summer reinforcement. And good-looking early fixtures for the new season. So in short, yes, having one of Jose's men from the off seems sensible. The question is - which one to go for?

My guess is that United will start the season with DDG, Valencia, Bailly, Lindelof and Blind as the back five. Back up from Romero, Darmian, Smalling, Jones and Shaw. My guess is that Valencia and Bailly will be £0.5M more than the rest (likely £6.0M), but they are also the most assured of starts. With that in mind, I would lean towards one of them, however Jose will clearly want to get Lindelof in the team early doors (he also takes set-pieces), meanwhile Blind is a BPS magnet. So there will be alternative options.

One potential curveball - DDG leads for Real late in the window and Romero (likely to be priced at £5.0M) starts the season as United's number one. That combination of price and certainty of starts would surely be far too tempting. TM32

Once the prices are out, whoever's the cheapest of the nailed on options should be in almost every RMT. But 'essential' is a dangerous tag to put on a defender; a lot of us put too much faith in Stones for too long, because we were telling each other how essential he was.

yes exactly. aim is anyone can add whichever players they want, but if you just want to do 'alonso trippier dawson 5.0 4.0', then that works as well.

it wouldn't work if you just entered the price below because it'd mess it up if you changed it back to a name.

Pickford price now that he has joined Everton? 4.5 or 5M?
At 4.5 is he essential ?

At 5.5m I wouldn't touch him unless Everton have a good run of fixtures.

Best Price per point keeper ?
        Butland or Foster ?

Possibly Butland, Heaton, Forster, WestHam keeper, or a promoted side keeper.

          Need prices and some transfers.

5.0. Even at 4.5, I'd avoid as fixtures are bad and he won't be as reliable for save points.

Saying he won't get save points and that his fixtures are bad is contradictory, tough fixtures equal more save points for keepers

Think he's going to be at least 5.0.

I would normally be considering him, but it’s just a shame their first 6 fixtures read: STK mci che TOT mnu. They will, however, come into the reckoning from Gameweek 7 onwards, with a fantastic trio of fixtures (BOU, BUR, bha).

Maybe one for the early WC squad?

    Morning all,

Great blog on Lindelof. I agree with this (wrote up a summary of him myself, using last season's FPL points) that he is looking solid, but the lack of a goal threat compared to the Gary Cahills of this world is a bit off-putting. A 6.0 valuation - if he receives it - is definitely going to kill him off (at least initially). However, him next to Bailly does mean United having the meanest CB partnership since Ferdinand-Vidic imo (though Pallister-Bruce is the one I always remember!!!)

I've also, if anyone is interested, done a short write up on Everton's new man Davy Klaassen, which you can see here: http://whogottheassist.com/posts/486 (we've also got Kolasinac, Kachunga, Ederson and Lindelof looked at in the format). If you have a spare mo, check it out 😀

What are people's thoughts on Mkhitaryan for this season? Really like him as a player but he didn't do too well last season. Maybe he'll have settled a bit better for 17/18 though?

Our thoughts are irrelevant. What does Bourinho want to do with him is the question.

          🙄

If ManUtd get everyone he wants, he doesn't seem to have met Bourinho's standard of play and will likely continue to be a super-sub.

I wouldn't get him for Week 1 unless Bourinho starts him in most summer friendlies.

Could totally come back into the reckoning. Looks like with them either backing out of, or not getting complete, the Griezmann deal that he will assume that role.

I really liked Mkhi at Dortmund. After a patchy year last time out he could prove to be a great under-the-radar bargain. That 9.5m price tag surely won't happen again, maybe 9.0 or maybe even 8.5 (he finished at 8.7) could happen.
      Intriguing possibility - good spot @Nobwak 😀

Yeah I think he has potential to be a good pick too. Did really well in Europe, perhaps he just needed a bit of time to adapt to the EPL, as many players from foreign leagues do.

Yeah that's definitely a recurring theme. The signs aren't too good; he got 73 overall last year - coming from Dortmund you'd have thought he'd have done better (though he has had injuries). Eriksen coming in from Ajax got 132 in his first season, as a comparator.

Let's hope he really kicks on this year! I like him as an under-the-radar option in any case.

This has been a theme with Mkhitaryan as well, his last season under Klopp at Dortmund was just abysmal. Not surprising it coincided with a pretty turbulent time at the club.

Mkhitaryan is not a player you can rely on. He's not the type to lead from the front in my opinion, but if you get the team playing well and running strong you get the best out of him. Part of me thinks this explains the discrepancy in Europa vs the PL. Without question, if you're a confidence player in United last season where are you going to derive your confidence? Limp league performances and no hope of attaining anything except possibly scraping a top 4? Or a European competition you have a really good chance of winning?

I think Mourinho's plans are to increase the defensive resolve with better defensive players. That should give other guys like Pogba and Mkhitaryan a bit more free license to roam instead of constantly having defending on their minds.

I like his game a lot: he was phenomenal in his last year at BVB. Though I would hope that he is capable of reproducing that form in a Utd shirt, he seems to lack the space and freedom of movement that he had at Dortmund.

His plight reminds me a little of when Di Maria was at United...both are players that excel in a more fluid system than United were putting them in. They are good enough to still perform well, but they'll never reach their full potential unless given the freedom they need.

I think he'll have improved upon last season after that spell in the setup. Could become an option at some point but it's a wait and see. I might be eyeing up a punt on Pogba from GW1 however.

Ohhh interesting one Pep. I'm a proponent of 4.5/4.0 (4.0 being the 4.5's backup) myself, so hoping that Foster comes out at 4.5 and Myhill at 4.0 principally; can't see Grant being 4.0 again to Butland's probably 4.5.

Heaton will be 5.0 - must be. Could be paired with Robbo/Pope at 4.0. But I think saving that 0.5 and spending it further up the pitch could work wonders!

    Heaton 5.0   4.0 BUR

    6.0   Smith/Löwe 4.5   WBA 4.5  Olsson 4.5  4.0

    Alli 10.0  Pedro 8.0   Salah 8.0  Sané 8.0 Kachunga 5.5

    Kane 13.0    Lukaku/Jesus 10.5   4.5

    -Exactly 100m. Nothing ITB

    - Three-way  HUD/SWA/WBA rotation (first 9 GWs works very well)

That's a really light defence, with only a single option above 4.5. Unless prices fall very favourably, I'd want a bit more defensive depth, especially with the number of point-scoring wingbacks last year.

Just post a lot and generally show polite conduct and responsiveness.

There's a huge pool to choose from. There's too many users here from India to be out of the loop. It's likely the biggest growth prospect for site traffic and membership. I think it's likely that after the UK, the most users of the site come from India, though Ireland may still be ahead.

On the other hand, the bread and butter of advertising funds for the site is gambling which folks in India don't have access to as I understand it.

It shouldn't be just Ireland and countries where procreation by natives of Great Britain fostered the culture (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom) in the mod squad.

We select mods based on their experience of and contribution to the site, mainly over a sustained period. We build a picture over time and when we look to recruit we normally have a shortlist at hand. We don't select mods based on location, age or sex and membership is not a factor either - it's purely based on our need and our impression of the candidates active In the community.

Do you have multiple IDs and just come one here with this rude personality/FFSID when you're having a bad day and need to lash out at people? I mean, I hope that's the case, otherwise you probably need professional help.

Why India in particular....I agree it makes sense to have a wide range of mods from different backgrounds though. I assume you aren't including yourself in the 'polite' description though .. you've been warned by mods at least once on here recently for your behaviour.

When? Don't recall a warning in years.

I mentioned India initially at is my impression there is a large cohort of users from there. It feels like the top three countries by users (members and non-members) are UK, Ireland and India.

The best person for the "job'' should just be selected. If you were to choose the next person with a bias towards India that's unfair for the non-Indian applicants, they may be overlooked just because they're not Indian despite perhaps being best candidate for the job. It's not clear to me that nationality should be a factor when choosing a mod. I just don't get it. There are quite a lot of young posters on here nowadays, why don't they hire more 18-20 year olds! 😛

Anyway, it's not worth getting into that much of a heated discussion over. This is a voluntary role as far as I'm aware, it's not like anyone's loosing out on a dream job 😆

Errr why? I don't know or care where the existing mods come from, if they are doing the modding properly then it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is time zone coverage obviously, choosing mod coverage based on that is sensible, so you are always guaranteed some mod cover.

      1. Lawrø
        • 12 Years

Language also matters. Those who are native English speakers are generally have a better grasp - especially colloquially. People have drastically different sleep schedules too. These are factors but neither should rule somebody out or in based on location imo

I guess country-specific mods are not an important requirement. However, time-zone 'coverage' might be. ( Is that the first time 'coverage' has been used for 2017-18 season? 😎 )

As long as there is one of the mods active to help guys here with the nuts and bolts at all times, it probably does not matter which nation he is from.

Do you think Pickford will be 5.0 at Everton next season?

I don't think he is worth to have if priced at 5.0, but if by some chance they price him at 4.5 I would strongly consider him in my team. First 6 fixtures are a nightmare for Everton, but it could bring save points for Pick and some unlikely CS. It is all we ask from a 4.5 keeper, I guess.

Confed Cup? Nah, I don't really want to be researching New Zealand football tbh.

Really think Asensio is going to boss this tournament. Would be already considered a world beater if he was playing 90 minutes a week.

Hey guys, do we have a 'Shots in box and on target' statistic on Member stats?

I think we have 'Shots in box' and 'shots on target'. If we can combine both, it could be a very powerful statistic
