Development Squad – Update Two Is Live

Continuing our programme of fixes and additions, the imaginatively named “update two” is now live with the latest array of changes.

This reflects Mat’s (aka “matzi11a’s”) work over the last couple of weeks and is mainly focused on our immediate goal to build the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS) into our tables for the coming season.

Here’s a summary of what’s included in this latest bout of changes:

Sky Sports Bonus Stats revisited
While we introduced the Sky Sports tiered bonus points in Update One, some users raised the request of seeing how these points were distributed over the two tiers.

We’ve now tweaked the display of these stats in the Sky Sports tables to show just that. You can see exactly how many bonus points each player earned in both the tiers for Saves, Tackles, Passes and Shots.

Fantasy Assists Statistic
When the Fantasy Premier League went to Opta to request a new, broader, classification for an assist – to include fouled players at free-kicks and penalties and rebounds – we stuck by the classic Opta definition in our tables.

However, with the FPL “Fantasy Assist” still used in the game and differing quite markedly from the traditional Opta stat, we’ve decided to build a query to include this statistic.

Across our tables, you will now see Fantasy Assists appear alongside the regular Assist stat with a new Total Assist calculation stat combining the two.

Big Chances Modification
It came to our attention that Opta now classify a new type of event as a Big Chance or “gilt-edged opportunity”. This is an event which does not result in a shot by a player but perhaps a complete miss or an “air shot”. Nonetheless, the opportunity is still deemed a Big Chance and therefore needs to be in our data.

This led us to create a series of new data to cover missed chances with and without a shot on goal. However, you will see new statistics – Total Big Chances, Big Chances Scored and Big Chances Missed in our tables. These are new additions to the Goal Threat tables for players.

Big Chances Created Added
With the change to Big Chances, we had to reflect this in our Big Chances Created statistic. Once revised, we also added this new stat to our Distribution tables for players as a new metric.

Recoveries Fixed and Added for Goalkeepers
Examination of our Recoveries data revealed some inconsistencies and errors and, in addition, we had not recorded Recoveries for goalkeepers – a key stat in the FPL BPS.

We’ve now fixed our Recoveries statistic and added it to the Goalkeepers’ goalkeeping table.

Caught Offside Statistic
This statistic was never surfaced on any table and, although available in the custom table listing, was returning incorrect data.

We’ve now fixed this stat and continue to make it available for custom table makers.

This data, like many others built for this update, will be included in our BPS tables to come.

Take Ons Statistic
Previously we’ve only surfaced statistics for Dribbles – when a player attempts to travel in possession with the ball.

However, the Dribbles stat is not used when calculating the BPS. Instead, FPL use the Opta “Take Ons” statistic – when a player dribbles and attempts to beat an opponent.

We also learned that Opta had a new “Overrun” event which measured a failed dribble – when a player simply overruns the ball to lose possession rather than be tackled by an opponent. We’ve now built a query and surfaced this stat behind the scenes.

In a nutshell, we’ve now added Take Ons as a subset of Dribbles and have replaced Dribbles with Take Ons in the player Involvement tables. However, both Dribbles and Take Ons are available in the Player Comparisons and, of course, when building Custom tables.

Tackled Statistic
The BPS penalises a player a single point each time they are “tackled” in a match. However, this is not, as you might expect, based on tackles lost. Instead, it’s a combination of the failed Take Ons and the Opta Dispossessed statistic.

A vital metric in the BPS table, we’ve already surfaced this in our player Involvement tables. We’ve also added a new “Retention” section to the player comparison tool and displayed both the Tackled and Dispossessed statistics.

Player Comparison Tool names filter
For several seasons the drop-down list of player names when using the Comparison Tool has shown multiple names for some players.

We’ve now addressed this to remove duplicates and also introduced the ability for us to swap in a “known name” or a more familiar name for a player – this enables us to make players like Sanchez and Firmino easier to find. You’ll see us tidy this up over the next few days now that Opta have released a first squad list for 2017/18.

What’s Next?

We continue on our quest to create tables presenting the data for the Bonus Points System – involving both positive and negative factors. We are now just a few statistics short of being able to build the tables.

Mat will work on creating Net Tackles and the Winning Goal data next.

The latter is an interesting one and may lead us to begin work on a mid-term task – to store team results in order to begin work on a proposed new tool. Hopefully, we can bring you more on that in the next update.

We remain completely open to the work we’re carrying out and the tasks to come. You can follow our progress as we add and move tasks via our roadmap here.

We also continue to welcome any comments and requests. Once the BPS tables work is complete, we will have a full appraisal of the next set of tasks and goals.

A reminder that, if you want access to both this update and future additions to the members’ area, you can sign up for the new season now for our pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00).

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Time to stop penalising players that get tackled?

As our latest Members stats update says -

The BPS penalises a player a single point each time they are “tackled” in a match. However, this is not, as you might expect, based on tackles lost. Instead, it’s a combination of the failed Take Ons and the Opta Dispossessed statistic.

Is this fair that players like Costa and Alli are so heavily penalised for bonus points for being tackled. Surely the fact that they are launching so many raids in the box and attracting tackles should be rewarded? Or do you think the present FPL BPS system is correct - they could after all dodge the tackles perhaps?

Alli, in particular, has an awful record - members can check his Take Ons vs Successful Take Ons - pretty dreadful and certainly a factor that is killing his BPS vs Eriksen.

If Alli is priced the same as Eriksen this info will be very useful indeed.

Alli wins the eye test every time for me....but the BPS test favours Eriksen clearly.

If a player's ability to dribble past an opponent is poor, they should perhaps consider another tactic - passing, maybe?

its that you cant always have a successful dribble but this is an important part of the game. Its helps them to create goalscoring opportunities for themself and teammates by wriggling away from opponent in the tight spaces . So it basically helps the team so that's why its been asked if this Positive action to make a goal should be penalised or not?

and FPl have decided to penalise it

and I think at an extent this is fair

It's not a positive action if they lose possession. This is Sanchez vs AOC for example. Sanchez will rarely lose the ball trying to go past players, AOC will always goes that one phase too far and lose possession. I think it is a valid stat, I would like to see which players can do it well or not.

Yeah that's why FPL is penalising this action .

I think as long as their successful take ons/tackles won are rewarded then it's fair enough. If someone loses the ball more often than not then they probably deserve to suffer a slight drop in BPS.

There are probably occasions where high risk-high reward style players get punished for trying to make things happen but when they're successful they get 'pure' points anyway.

Unless there's a way to separate out losing possession through carelessness/poor play vs losing it through admirable endeavour then I vote no change.

I think it's fair enough Jonty. Better to have methods which cut the points for big players and allow us to look at more options.
Alli has everything from goals to aesits. Having a few rules like these will not make the game too biased towards a particular set of players.

Interesting. Reckon it shouldn't be penalised, but also not rewarded. Then perhaps successful take ons could be rewarded a little more to compensate.

exactly. it means playmakers like ozil/eriksen are rewarded far more for an average game than more dynamic players. Unless it's a big error that the opposition punishes, it should be a neutral event.

I think its ok how it is. You could say given the fact they are playing so far up the pitch, if they evade just 1 of those tackles, they are likely to be through on goal or able to make an assist, which would bring in the "pure" points anyway. The fact they are being penalised when they don't evade a tackle merely brings other players into the game, which is no bad thing. In the case of Alli, contrast him with teammate Dembele, who is unlikely to make many goals or assists but is amazing at dribbling, potentially bringing him into BPS reckoning on occasion.

If the tackle leads to a big chance created, goal or penalty, dangerous free kick i think it should be counted but if its just a general tackle which doesnt affect the overall situation of the game then i think its a bit harsh.

It is a stupid rule and mirrors old school "play it safe" mentality. It fails to acknowledge that even the best dont success everytime. It is so much easier to just make the safe decision and escape a potential mistake than make a play that is right - the risky one that has potential to accomplish something.

Same thing in many fantasy hockey games. Sometimes I scratch my head since they give points for hits on players. Why? Look at the stats on who the most hit players are: the best players of the game who always have the puck. The heavy hitters on the other hand are the one chasing. Could we give point to those who are hit instead?

    Different crowd so posting again.

    Hi all,

I am running a WhatsApp group for FFS posters for FPL related chatter since last season. We are extending the number of posters this season - and are looking to add a limited number of participants. Ideally we're looking for FPL managers who have been around these parts from quite a while and are avid players of the game we love. The group has been a great success - some of us managed a highest ever FPL finish while others are prominent HOF members. Anyone interested in joining the group can feel free to hit me up on my email address.

Today is the last day of our recruitment - anyone who hasn't been in touch with me already and is interested in joining should email me at the email ID given above. Thanks.

It's about time these stupidly rich people who fiddle the tax system through highly-paid accountants are caught up with and made an example of. If these cheats paid the tax they should, the world would be a much better place.

Football is the biggest gravy train around for those involved and yet some of them don't seem to think earning millions a year is sufficient.

Meanwhile, a lot of fans struggle to pay to watch their teams whether live or on TV.

Can he have the same season as this years though? His form was non existent last year. He is getting quite old too, 34 if I remember correctly.

Will be getting in for free or for 5 mil max so worth the risk.

Good for one or two seasons. Heard rumours about a £5m fee and that's nothing given the experience he brings to the team. Don't forget that he has been the best RB in the world for a long period of time.

Good signing if it happens but not sure about him as an FPL option. Allegri managed his minutes really well last season to keep him fresh for the big games. Wouldn't surprise me if Pep rotates him with Fernandinho or another new signing similarly to how Max used Lichtsteiner.

That's a big question and a hugely interesting topic.

Lots of Fantasy managers use stats, lots don't.

For me, they've become vital in steering my decisions before and particularly during the season. I can't imagine playing Fantasy Football without access to stats and, as someone who enjoys working with them, I can't get enough.

We know that Premier League clubs use such data to drive transfers and team selection, thefore we know that stats are factors in assessing performance. Therefore I think that makes a case for them playing a part in our Fantasy Football decisions.

I'm intent on building the most in-depth statistical tools available for football fans and Fantasy Football managers and I think they can offer an advantage.

As with anything, though, the user has to learn to interpret them and use them alongside their other factors for decision making - like gut feeling and their own visual assessment of players.

I feel like the big loser in all of this has to be Adam Lallana. He played really well for stretches last year, but I would have to imagine that the signing of Salah portends the moving of Coutinho back into the midfield three (where Klopp flirted with playing him towards the end of last year).

Is Lallana now more likely to be rotating with Wijnaldum than a starter in his own right (alongside Henderson and Cout)?

        atm, it looks like

        -----------Can/Henderson-------

        -Lallana/Wijnaldum------Coutinho------

        --Salah-------Firmino------Mane----

Liverpool want Naby Keita who would be a strong contender to start alongside Coutinho in midfield. He is an unlikely signing though IMO

        • 8 Years

Yeah you would have to assume that Lallana and Wijnaldum will be fighting for one spot but Liverpool have more games to deal with next season so he'll still play plenty. It does kill him as an FPL option I'm afraid.

          This.

I expected Aguero to end up in 2016 Ibra range (11.5). Lukaku might be 11.0/10.5, Jesus to be a little cheaper (maybe 10.5/10.0).

He'll be 12.5 imo, a 0.5 drop. He still scored 20 league goals, so would be a bit harsh imo to drop him 1.0/1.5. In terms of him, Kane, Lukaku, etc - tough. You can't have them all. Makes the game more challenging.

Anyone else ignoring the Liverpool mids to start? It was already tough to predict who would be in the points last season and Salah's arrival only makes that worse, plus possible rotation around CL fixtures including the qualifiers early in the season. I think it might be best to wait and see as far as Liverpool assets are concerned.
